Hi Technically Human Listeners! After a long summer break we are back with a brand season and brand new episodes of the show! To kick off the season, we are bringing you an episode that I'm calling “agree to disagree,” with two guests, Robert D. Atkinson and David Moschella, who join me to argue that the critiques of tech circulating in our environment are full of “myths and scapegoats.” That's the title of their new book, “Technology Fears and Scapegoats: 40 Myths About Privacy, Jobs, AI, and Today's Innovation Economy,” published this year by Pallgrave McMillan. The book argues that our era of tech critique, and the impetus for regulation that many critics advocate for and recommend, is misguided, and that our era is one of general pessimism toward AI, in which our society largely overlooks the benefits of this technology. In their words, quote, “These attitudes both reduce the enthusiasm for innovation and the efforts by government needed to spur it.” Well, as the title of the episode suggests, agree to disagree, both on the facts and the merits of the argument! A key component of this show is my commitment to talking to people with whom I disagree, and foregrounding civil discourse with people whose ideas differ from my own. My hope is that you, the listeners, can weigh out their arguments against my own and see where you land. As always, if you have thoughts about the show, please get in touch! Robert D. Atkinson is the founder and president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF). He is an internationally recognized scholar and a widely published author whom The New Republic has named one of the “three most important thinkers about innovation,” Washingtonian Magazine has called a “tech titan,” Government Technology Magazine has judged to be one of the 25 top “doers, dreamers and drivers of information technology,” and the Wharton Business School has given the “Wharton Infosys Business Transformation Award.” A sought-after speaker and valued adviser to policymakers around the world, Atkinson's books include Technology Fears and Scapegoats: 40 Myths about Privacy, Jobs, AI, and Today's Innovation Economy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024); Big is Beautiful: Debunking the Mythology of Small Business (MIT Press, 2018); Innovation Economics: The Race for Global Advantage (Yale, 2012); Supply-Side Follies: Why Conservative Economics Fails, Liberal Economics Falters, and Innovation Economics is the Answer (Rowman & Littlefield, 2006); and The Past And Future Of America's Economy: Long Waves Of Innovation That Power Cycles Of Growth (Edward Elgar, 2005). President Clinton appointed Atkinson to the Commission on Workers, Communities, and Economic Change in the New Economy; the Bush administration appointed him chair of the congressionally created National Surface Transportation Infrastructure Financing Commission; the Obama administration appointed him to the National Innovation and Competitiveness Strategy Advisory Board; as co-chair of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy's China-U.S. Innovation Policy Experts Group; to the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship; and the Trump administration appointed him to the G7 Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence. The Biden administration appointed him as a member of the U.S. State Department's Advisory Committee on International Communications and Information, and a member of the Export-Import Bank of the United States' Council on China Competition. Atkinson holds a Ph.D. in city and regional planning from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hil. David Moschella is a nonresident senior fellow at ITIF. Previously, he was a research fellow at Leading Edge Forum (LEF), where he explored the global business impact of digital technologies, with a particular focus on disruptive business models, industry restructuring and machine intelligence. For more than a decade before LEF, David was in charge of worldwide research for IDC, the largest market analysis firm in the information technology industry, responsible for the company's global technology industry forecasts and insights. A well-known international speaker, writer, and thought leader, David's books include Technology Fears and Scapegoats: 40 Myths about Privacy, Jobs, AI, and Today's Innovation Economy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024), Seeing Digital—A Visual Guide to the Industries, Organizations, and Careers of the 2020s (DXC Technology, 2018), Customer-Driven IT (Harvard Business School Press, 2003), and Waves of Power (Amacom, 1997). Family Medicine and the Counterculture Revolution for our TimesPresented by Kevin Grumbach, MD, University of California, San FranciscoSTFM Annual Conference 2024 Blanchard Lecture | Monday, May 6, 2024 Family medicine was forged in the crucible of social movements of the 1960s. The consequential issues of our times—climate change, systemic racism, inequality of wealth, gun violence, reproductive rights, among others—are all contests for the common good that require social movements to achieve systemic reform. Primary care, according to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, is also a common good. Is family medicine ready to tap its brash, founding energy to reignite a second counterculture revolution to challenge profits, power, and privilege that harm society's collective wellbeing? This presentation will address the essential ingredients of a counterculture revolution, including daring to be radical and not settling for incrementalism; speaking truth to power; identifying and dismantling structures that reinforce the status quo; democratizing alliances; and acknowledging one's own complicity in harmful systems. If the speaker and audience do not feel uncomfortable at some point during the session, then the presentation will not have achieved its objectives.Learning Objectives: At the end of the session each participant should...To recognize the roots of family medicine as a countercultural specialtyTo be able to characterize primary care as a common goodTo identify the key elements of a counterculture revolutionTo incorporate revolutionary acts into one's professional life while being able to continue to earn a livelihood in family medicinePresentation SlidesCopyright © Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, 2024Kevin Grumbach, MD: Kevin Grumbach, MD is Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. All Home Care Matters was honored to welcome Todd "TJ" Keitz as guest to the show. Todd has been a lifelong social good evangelist! He has woven community engagement and social impact into his life since he was a teenager volunteering in senior living centers. Over decades, he has created inter-generational programs to build bridges within families and communities, volunteered as a “hugger” for Special Olympics, developed business curriculum for high schools, taught in inner-city schools for Junior Achievement, been a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and worked in the healthcare industry – consulting with major employers, hospital systems, pharmaceutical companies, and other entities. Further, he's also proud of the work he did consulting in the 2000s with the South Korean government related to technology companies. Through all of this, Todd became even more driven to translate his personal ethos on a much larger scale within his professional life. In 2012, he co-founded and served as CEO of Stock4Good, to make the process infinity easier for individuals to donate stock of publicly held companies to 501(c)3 organizations. In 2018, he relocated to Florida to become primary caregiver and patient advocate for his mom and dad – each with life threatening diseases. During those experiences, Todd saw first-hand the many challenges all caregivers and patient advocates face. That led him to create My Care Friends, a unique, new website for caregivers and patient advocates to connect and support each other. Additionally, Todd currently serves on the National Advisory Council of the American Association of Caregiving Youth, which brings greater awareness to the needs of over 5.4 million caregiving youth in the U.S. He also sits on the board of SayAh! - a nonprofit focused on improving health literacy across the U.S. About My Care Friends: My Care Friends TM was born out of caregiving and advocacy experiences that the founder/CEO, Todd Keitz, has had throughout his life. This started at nine years old for his uncle and continued 20 years later for his sister after a horrific car accident. Over the following decade, he helped his mom care/advocate for his grandparents before they passed, and since 2018 he has been primary caregiver and advocate for her and his dad who have been battling life threatening diseases. Considering the depth of all that, combined with Todd's business experiences over decades in and with the healthcare industry, it's apparent where the passion and mission for My Care Friends comes from! That mission is two-fold: 1) To enable caregivers and patient advocates to meaningfully and easily connect in a safe online community, with others in similar roles – so they are “seen”, “heard” and “understood.” Whether communicating about a caregiving, patient advocacy, or personal interest topic, My Care Friends provides many ways for community members to Connect. Share. Support.TM 2) To provide online and offline educational programs and resources, which puts forth robust and relevant content that gives caregivers and patient advocates information and tools to be more knowledgeable, confident, and effective in their roles. My Care Friends encourages all caregivers, patients advocates, loved ones and patients themselves to create a FREE account at www.mycarefriends.com to Connect. Share. Support. each other and to stay informed about offline programming!

Matt is joined by Dr. Paul Thigpen, the author of Extraterrestrial Intelligence and the Catholic Faith: Are We Alone in the Universe with God and the Angels? Matt and Paul discuss some of the biblical and theological issues that might come up if we were to discover extraterrestrial existence. For example, what sort of ontological status would ETs have? Would they be with or without sin? Or a mix of both? And if ETs were sinful, how might God redeem them? As a historical theologian, Dr. Thigpen invites listeners to hear the wisdom of the Christian tradition. He believes the theologians of the past can lend invaluable insights for this topic. And in this vein, he leads us back to some of the church's greatest thinkers: From Jerome to Augustine to Aquinas to the celebrated Christian apologist of the last century, namely, C.S. Lewis -- each of these giants of the faith can, arguably, help us ponder the ET question. About Paul Thigpen: Paul is the author of 60 books, as well as a graduate from Yale University in religious studies. He also has an MA and PhD in historical theology from Emory University. In addition to having been appointed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to their National Advisory Council, Paul has also served the church in a variety of capacities, including as a university professor, historian, apologist, catechist, and musician. Greed should not be a factor in patient care, and yet more and more it seems to be. Dr. Donald Berwick has a wonderful article titled Salve Lucrum in JAMA, and I highly recommend it. He touches on how his father inspired and inspires him, the importance of community and connection, and the small steps we can take to fight greed. Dr. Donald M. Berwick, MD, MPP, FRCP, is President Emeritus and Senior Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. He is former Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Trained as a pediatrician by background, he has taught at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, and he has served on the staffs of Boston's Children's Hospital Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Brigham and Women's Hospital. He was Vice Chair of the US Preventive Services Task Force, the first "independent member" of the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees, and Chair of the National Advisory Council of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the Institute of Medicine. Recognized as a leading authority on health care quality and improvement, Dr. Berwick has received numerous awards for his contributions, including from the British National Health Service in 2005, when he was appointed "Honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire" by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Dr. Berwick is the author or co-author of over 160 scientific articles and six books. He currently serves as lecturer in the Department of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School. He has a new podcast in spring, 2023 called Turn on the Lights.
My guest today is Nita Farahany. Nita is a professor of Law and Philosophy at Duke Law School. She is the founding director of the Duke Science and Society. She is the faculty chair of the Duke MA in Bioethics and Science Policy and Principal Investigator at slap lab. In 2010, she was appointed by President Obama to the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues where she served until 2017. She's an appointed Member of the National Advisory Council for the National Institute for Neurological Disease and Stroke and she is a past president of the International Neuroethics Society. This is only a small slice of her bio.The topic of this conversation is mind reading, and I don't mean trying to guess what's in somebody's head. I mean actual technology that scans your brain and reliably conveys what you are thinking or feeling. Now, this seemed like science fiction to me, but Nita convinced me in this conversation that this technology is already here, and there are a host of ethical questions relating to privacy and other things.Nita and I talk about how EEG scans can give us information about our minds. We talk about the relationship between EEG scans and classical questions in the philosophy of mind, such as consciousness, as well as free will. We talk about the uses of mind-reading technology in criminal investigations, which has already happened. We talk about the current uses of mind-reading tech in Chinese factories. And yes, that is already happening too. We talk about tattoos that can pick up your brain activity. And once again, that already exists. We talk about the combination of artificial intelligence and mind-reading tech and what that promises for the future. We talk about whether excellent liars would be able to pass mind-reading technology. We also talk about how mind-reading tech has even been used to tell whether couples are in love. I really hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

Nadine Strossen joins Tim to talk about how to fight “hate speech” or harmful speech without censorship. She's a best-selling author and a Professor of Constitutional Law at New York Law School. She's also the first woman national President of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). In this episode, she talks about private company censorship, the challenges, some solutions and all of it as addressed in her book “Hate: Why we should resist it with free speech, not censorship. This episode was first released April 12, 2021. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Encore_-_Nadine_Strossen_on_Free_Speech.mp3 Free speech isn't just an American issue, and it's not just a First Amendment issue. Though it is important to note that the right of freedom of expression is the cornerstone to the First Amendment for a reason. The founders believed that certain rights come from God. Even if you don't believe in God, and that is your right as protected by the First Amendment, the founders would tell you that your rights are natural rights, not man-made rights. They are innate desires and drives for every human being on earth and that it's not for man to deny them to others. The right to express yourself without punishment is one of the most important rights they cited. The right to gather in groups peacefully together without penalty. The right to worship your God without coercion or punishment. The right of a free press to report news and information without government control. History is ripe with examples of cases where these rights were used to spread hateful thoughts and ideas. At the same time, our country's short history is also full of cases where courts decided that the price for our First Amendment freedoms is tolerance for the spread of ideas that some may see as harmful, hateful or irresponsible. The principle is this. We must be willing to tolerate speech we don't like in exchange for the right to deliver speech that others may not like. In recent years, there has been a movement to try to control, prevent or stop the spread of speech and information some may feel are harmful. Their solution is to stifle the speech, de-platform the messenger. Or even de-platform the platform. Remove any opportunity for others to communicate if that communication does not meet accepted narratives. In other words, censorship. This has been the focus of Nadine Strossen's professional life. And with a resume that includes serving as the first woman national President of the ACLU, she has solid credentials on the issue of free speech and the battle against censorship, she has found allies from conservatives to progressives as well, making this an increasingly nonpartisan issue. In this episode, Randall and Steve discuss whether someone can learn to be an entrepreneur or does they have to be born with the gene, the importance of failure and our ability to overcome it, the role entrepreneurs play in creating jobs, why innovation is key when starting a company, and so much more.Topics include: -The digital revolution-Raising venture capital-Establishing partnerships-The Attacker/Defender dynamic-Characteristics of great entrepreneurs-Closing the opportunity gap-How to identify promising entrepreneurs-Mistakes to avoid when looking for funding-Philanthropy and The Giving PledgeSteve Case is one of America's best-known and most accomplished entrepreneurs and a pioneer in making the Internet part of everyday life. Steve's entrepreneurial career began in 1985 when he co-founded America Online (AOL). Under Steve's leadership, AOL became the world's largest and most valuable Internet company, driving the worldwide adoption of a medium that has transformed business and society. At its peak, nearly half of Internet users in the United States used AOL. In 2000, Steve negotiated the largest merger in business history, bringing together AOL and Time Warner in a transaction that gave AOL shareholders a majority stake in the combined company. To facilitate the merger, Steve agreed to step down as CEO when the merger closed. Steve now serves as Chairman and CEO of Revolution LLC, a Washington, D.C.- based investment firm he co-founded in 2005, where he partners with visionary entrepreneurs to build significant “built to last” new businesses. Steve's passion for helping entrepreneurs remains his driving force. He was the founding chair of the Startup America Partnership—an effort launched at the White House to accelerate high-growth entrepreneurship throughout the nation. He is also a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship, was the founding co-chair of the National Advisory Council on Innovation & Entrepreneurship and a member of President Obama's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness where he chaired the subcommittee on entrepreneurship.
