His A History of Plague in Java, 1911-1942 (Southeast Asia Program Publications, 2022) is an engaging study of a massive public health campaign in the Dutch East Indies. As he records the most invasive colonial policy in Indonesian history, his work ties together the histories of disease, imperialism, and modernity. A History of Plague in Java, 1911-1942 will be of interest to Southeast Asianists, scholars of disease, and anyone interested the origins of modern state systems. In this podcast, MaCayla Arsenault, a project manager at Central Oregon Health Council, discusses Central Oregon Health Council's approach for Enrollee Advisory Committees. Effective 2023, any Medicare Advantage (MA) organization offering one or more Dual-Special Need Plans (D-SNPs) in a state must establish and maintain one or more enrollee advisory committee (EACs). EACs must serve the D-SNPs offered by the MA organization in that state to gather direct input on enrollee experiences. These podcasts, excerpted from a 2022 webinar, provide an overview of the EAC requirements, how health plans have engaged members in EACs, and how EAC members have impacted outcomes and created organizational change. Health plans that have been successfully running EACs share lessons learned and best practices for engaging members in plan governance through EACs, including recruiting and selecting members, collecting enrollee feedback, and disseminating feedback to appropriate departments.

Discover how to create more working capital than your top salesperson each year. Given the economic and human capital challenges businesses face, organizations need to quickly identify opportunities to combat these headwinds by optimizing operating expenses and revamping talent acquisition strategies. An often overlooked opportunity typically lies in corporate health plans where small and midsize companies routinely pay for healthcare employees never consumed and companies of all sizes overpay for healthcare employees do consume. Given that approximately 25% of everything employers spend on healthcare is considered waste and healthcare prices vary 700% - 1,100% within any given market, optimization allows companies to generate interest-free working capital while improving benefits used to attract and retain talent. Step 1) Stop paying for healthcare employees never actually consumed Step 2) Stop overpaying for the healthcare employees do consume Since 25% of all healthcare dollars are considered waste, the average savings opportunity is over $2,500 dollars per employee, per year. Climate change is a global health emergency. What can we learn from how ‘green' has gone up the agenda? And how might we apply useful lessons to getting further improvements in another complex and difficult challenge – improving the health of the UK population and reducing inequalities?    The increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves, floods, droughts and storms is already devastating lives and livelihoods around the world. While other countries are far more vulnerable to the health risks of climate change, the UK is not immune.    The UK government and the health and social care system must actively contribute to climate change solutions as part of our global responsibility. In the weeks ahead the UK (along with Italy as a partner) will host COP26, and countries will be showing what action they are taking towards the Paris Agreement goal to limit global warming. Making progress on climate change will be very challenging. Like improving health, it is a complex problem needing long-term policy commitment and action. What can we learn from efforts and progress so far? And can going greener actually improve the health of people in the UK? In the latest episode of our podcast, our Chief Executive Dr Jennifer Dixon discusses these issues with two expert guests: Dr Fiona Godlee is Editor in Chief of the British Medical Journal, a post she's held since 2005. Fiona is on the board and executive committee of the Climate and Health Council and the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change.  Professor Andy Haines is Professor of Environmental Change and Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. This is a new format introducing audio summaries from the roundtables held through the Urban Health Council. We have taken snippets from the conversation and weaved them together into a short summary. This conversation was on the theme of Air Pollution x Race x Health. In December 2020 a UK court ruled that air pollution made a material contribution to the death of 9-year old Ella Kissi-Debrah, marking her the first person in the UK to have air pollution as their cause of death. This is technically game changing, creating the road for health and environmental justice. Specifically, it should lead to changes in the living environments of Black, Asian, and Indigenous communities in the UK and US who are disproportionately exposed to air pollution. This roundtable will be discussing and covering the following + How air pollution affects all of our biological functions. + Over 20 years of data and history of air pollution as environmental racism. + How the exposure of environmental racism leads to disparities in respiratory and cardio-vascular diseases in Black, Asian, and Indigenous communities in UK and US. Mastering Intensive Care

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 17, 2019 93:11

Climate change is a conversation we need to be having in Intensive Care circles. Right now. If the environmental catastrophe that is unfolding around us continues unabated there may no longer even be Intensive Care Units. The rising global temperatures, the melting ice, the extreme weather events, and their impact on agricultural crops and human habitation may well lead to such a fall in the economy that our healthcare system may not have the financial resources it does now. And given ICUs are the most expensive part of our hospitals, have a guess what might disappear first. So who is there better to listen to about the climate crisis than British intensivist, Professor Hugh Montgomery, a deeply passionate and highly intelligent man, who was a founding member of the UK Climate and Health Council, and who has helped raise awareness about climate change for over 2 decades. In this episode Hugh outlines some simple things you can do today to help fight climate change. Hugh is a Professor and the Director of the Institute for Human Health and Performance at University College London. He obtained a 1st class degree in cardiorespiratory physiology and neuropharmacology before graduating from the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1987. He has since obtained specialist accreditation in Cardiology, General Internal Medicine and Intensive Care medicine, and practices as a Consultant Intensivist in North London in the UK. Hugh obtained his MD(Res) in 1997, is known for his pioneering genetic research, and has published over 450 peer reviewed papers, three in Nature. Hugh is also an author of children's books, and most recently of the medical thriller ‘Control’. Hugh has a such diverse array of interests and expertise that it’s hard to understand how he fits it all in. He has presented on television shows, climbed tall Himalayan mountains, run ultra-marathons, jumped naked from a plane at 14,000 feet, holds the world record for underwater piano playing, and also consults as a medical expert on Artificial Intelligence. Despite all of this, he continues to work as a clinical intensivist, publishes in the medical literature about important critical care topics, and is working to raise patient awareness about their end of life wishes. To me this is one of the most important Mastering Intensive Care episodes so far, as in a wide-ranging conversation Hugh talks about: How he became interested in physiology and then intensive care The intensivists that shaped his career Climate change and why we all need to care What actions we can take today as Intensive Care professionals to help the environment His own views on diet, renewable energy and international flights Some perspectives on the ICU ward round The importance of relationships and building connection with patients in clinical medicine How his father’s experience in hospital informed Hugh How “wisdom of the crowd” assists in making diagnoses Dealing with uncertainty at the bedside The importance of speaking to patients about end of life before they are admitted to the ICU How he speaks to families of the dying An end of life project he and his colleagues are working on Why he researches what he does Some tips for public speaking How the emergence of artificial intelligence might play out in healthcare Why we need to be engaged with Big Tech His own attitudes and practice of self-care and self development His non-medical writing, including his new medical thriller book “Control” I can not recommend more highly that you settle in and listen to this amazing man, Professor Hugh Montgomery. Since 1994, Cynthia Klein has been guiding parents to creating happy and healthy families. As a speaker to over three hundred groups, Cynthia has given parents the tools and confidence to improve their family dynamics. Her presentations are interactive, highly visual and easy for parents to apply to their own family situations. Parents leave encouraged that they are able to make positive changes. Cynthia’s clients have included the parents at Stanford University, Kaiser Permanente, The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Peninsula, The Children’s Health Council and Hewlett-Packard. Cynthia works privately with parents who want to make permanent improvements in their families. The wisdom she has gained from successfully raising her strong-willed young adult daughter is invaluable in understanding each parent’s struggle and prescribing the correct solutions. Her success lies in her amazing ability to first accurately assess family dynamics. Then Cynthia creates unique and individualized strategies during her interviews with the parents. This fine-tuned approach fixes the foundation of family problems. Parents gain wisdom of how to apply their newly learned beliefs and actions to other family situations. Cynthia authors the Middle School Mom column for the Parenting on the Peninsula magazine. Her education background includes a B.A. in Psychology from Berkeley and a Training and Human Resources Certificate from U.C. Santa Cruz along with certificates from four parent education institutions. She has also been credentialed in California and New Mexico where she taught elementary school. Her greatest pride, though, is that her 23 year-old-college graduated daughter is self-sufficient, calls her for guidance and considers Cynthia her mentor. Cynthia's website is Bridges 2 Understanding. Pro-Track Profile I met Cynthia at a recent National Speakers Association Northern California Chapter Pro-Track class and asked her about her professional focus and what attracted her to Pro-Track.
