Despite the limitations of social distancing, Extension is using technology to expand access to locally grown food, provide farmers new opportunities to sell their products and guide small businesses through this difficult time. By working with community partners, Extension is offering creative solutions that tackle the challenges of today and help everyone move forward together.On this week’s episode of Remote MU, we talk with Lorin Fahrmeier, the Farm to Institution Project Coordinator for the Youth and Family Division of University of Missouri Extension; and Justin Keay, a field specialist in horticulture for MU Extension in St. Louis and St. Charles Counties. Hands-on learning is the bedrock of a Mizzou education. Since 1911, the Department of Geological Sciences’Branson Field Laboratory has regularly hosted students from Mizzou and other universities across the country. This lab remains the longest continuously running site of its kind in the United States. Near midnight on May 22, a tornado struck Missouri’s capital, Jefferson City. The storm damaged over 600 buildings and left many residents without basic utilities. This natural disaster was just one of the many from last spring that impacted Missouri communities. As graduation approaches for thousands of our students, we are excited for the bright futures they have ahead of them. Employers look for graduates who are effective leaders, communicators and global citizens, but they also expect them to be experts in their specific fields of study. We're proud to say 9 of 10 Mizzou students have a successful career outcome six months after graduation. What makes our students so successful? Chancellor Cartwright talks with two graduating seniors who are going on to wonderful opportunities: Hadas Cohen is a senior earning her bachelor’s degree in textile and apparel management, who will be working as a merchandising analyst at Walmart’s corporate headquarters. Matthew Green is a senior earning his bachelor’s degree in economics and statistics, who will be working in Jefferson City as a fellow in the Missouri Data Fellows Program. Keyon Dooling

From 1998-2000, Keyon Dooling was a leader on the Mizzou basketball team. His stellar college career helped him become the 10th basketball player in MU’s history to be drafted in the NBA’s first round, where would go on to play for teams such as the Los Angeles Clippers and the Orlando Magic. But for Keyon, life after basketball as director of the National Basketball Players Association mental health and wellness program proved to be an even more seminal role. Now, he joins a list of extraordinary scientists who, since 1895, have been honored for their breakthrough discoveries and innovative solutions to some of humanity’s biggest challenges. Joining Chancellor Cartwright this week are two members of this year’s Homecoming Steering Committee: Nnamdi Okoli, a senior on the parade committee studying accounting; and Tri-Director Jenna Cederblad, a senior studying health science. Indigenous Cultures

For centuries, art has been a tool to document and study culture. Today, art forms like animation, film and digital storytelling create dynamic opportunities for cultural study, particularly the study of indigenous cultures. Missouri has a particularly rich Native American history. Even our state’s name derives from the Missouria tribe and translates to “one who has dugout canoes.” So, how does contemporary art help reveal the rich culture of Native Americans? Joining Chancellor Cartwright this week are Joseph Erb, assistant teaching professor in digital storytelling, and Ryder Jiron, a junior studying communications who is also the president of Four Directions. We’ve heard about it a lot this summer: drought. Most of Missouri is abnormally dry, and over 30 counties are experiencing extreme drought. But what exactly does all this talk about drought mean to the state and its people? Joining Chancellor Cartwright this week are Dr. Bob Sharp, professor in the Division of Plant Sciences and director of the Interdisciplinary Plant Group; and Shannon King, a doctoral student in biochemistry working under Doctors Scott Peck (biochemistry), Felix Fritschi (plant sciences) and Bob Sharp. In August 2017, both Chancellor Alexander Cartwright and rising sophomore Jonathon Potochnic arrived on Mizzou’s campus to begin their Tiger journey. They traveled here from vastly different places — from Buffalo, NY and St. Joseph, MO — and for vastly different opportunities: the Chancellor as the leader of Mizzou, Jonathon as a freshman. This week, the two of them are celebrating their first anniversary at Mizzou together. They’re sitting down to discuss their first year here, their favorite experiences on campus and in Columbia and what the future looks like for the university.
