Juliet is an Arizona State University College of Law graduate and currently works as the Founding Partner of Framework Legal. Juliet's journey is as unique as they get, from journalist to Lawyer, this episode takes a deep dive into how she got to where she is today. Juliet and I started a decade before law school, where she graduated from Marquette University with a bachelor's degree in journalism. As a kid, Juliet always wanted to be a lawyer but her love for journalism would put that dream on pause. For the next decade Juliet would be a newscaster and journalist all over the country, working in Ohio, Corpus Christi Texas, and finally landing in Milwaukee. But Juliet would re-spark that childhood dream of hers, and land herself at Arizona State University College of Law. We would dive into Juliet's first year of law school, which she both loved and hated. She loved the learning aspect and getting acclimated with the Law, but highly disliked the pressure and stressful nature of one exam determining her grade for the semester. Her experience in Journalism allowed her to digest large swaths of information all at once, and be able to get through cases quickly. We then moved on to Juliet's post-law school jobs, two in particular we looked into were her time at Cold Stone Creamery, and as the Division chief at the Child and Family Division for Arizona. Cold Stone would be fun and chaotic, and supply her with the business chops she needed later in her career. As the division chief, she would lead the newly founded project, making a wholesale change and clean up to the department, further giving her skills that would become necessary when she finally hung her own shingle as the Founding Partner Framework legal. We then dove into her decade at Framework Legal, speaking about how to ask the correct questions to entrepreneurs, her experience as an entrepreneur, and the psychology behind it. On top of this, Juliet and I would speak about her psychological reinvention over the years, not being afraid of change, and never pigeonholing ourselves in lockstep with the rest of society. Juliet's long experience in the field and wide range of experiences serve for an episode full of wisdom and actionable insights! [02:40] Your wife Dana is a sitting Wayne County Circuit Court Judge…you have many other family members who are sitting judges, the Hathaway name is well-known here in Michigan. Is that another reason you want to do this, to be part of the family? [04:08] How many seats are open in Wayne County right now? [05:08] Where did you go to law school? [06:36] What are some of the biggest problems you’re experiencing now, dealing with the family division and child protective matters in Wayne County? [07:12] Nick discusses the last ten years of juvenile delinquency, criminalization of juvenile issues that would formerly be handled within the community and the cycle of poverty and substance abuse. [08:32] We incarcerate too many people in this country… over the last thirty years, crime rates have been steadily declining, yet our rates of incarceration have increased. [09:56] There are four people running for two seats in Wayne County… why do you think should the voters pick you? [11:40] Nick is committed to service, wants to do the job correctly, has been making judicial decisions in Michigan’s busiest court for the last eleven years, and has a wealth of support to draw upon. So let me explain why today’s guest is a retired judge. And she is someone who had me shaking in my boots when I was a young lawyer, a really long time ago. And before I walked into a courtroom, I had to mentally prepare myself because I knew she was going to make sure I showed up on my a game. But in the other hand, her honesty and authenticity and tough love is what makes her so good at what she does. So let me introduce you to judge Linda Monroe judgment row had been a judge in Connecticut for 20 years, mostly in family court and complex litigation. She’s also an adjunct professor at Quinnipiac law school. And now she’s retired and works at Coleman and Coley as a private mediator on all things, family law. So essentially two people come to her say, we can’t figure things out. Please help us reach a decision. And people usually listen to her because she knows what she’s talking about. So welcome judge. Very nice you. Thank you. Thank you so much for being here. And I’m going to like shake off my nerves by the end of this interview. As long as you don’t ask me to like read something, we’ll be good. So when you were sitting on the bench and two people walked into your courtroom, usually they had a big box of emotion and anger and expectation that came with them and they kind of turned their box over and dumped it on the courtroom floor. How did you sort through all of that in order to reach a decision? You know, it’s a good way to describe it. That it’s an a box it’s like a lot of different pieces of paper all together and mixed up. When people come to court for divorce, they’re in different stages of the process of coming to grips with the divorce. And the judge really needs to be aware of it. We’re not a mental health professional, but you need to appreciate and understand that people go through stages of grief, fair anxiety, anger. And it’s only when they come through the other side of it that they’re able to start having a vision of what their life could be like, um, when they are divorced and are able to accept, um, that they’ve come to this place. So I think what I have tried to do in all my years on the bench is validate that, respect them, leave people with their integrity. I understand that whatever their issue they’re bringing to me is so very important to them at that moment and give it my full attention. And what does it mean when they say I want justice? Because as a divorce attorney often we’ll have clients that say, I just want justice. And what does that look like in a divorce? Well, it often doesn’t look like what the party’s thinking deep inside about what they want for justice. When they say they want justice, they want some kind of vindication of whatever, um,

What happens when no one is watching our children?   Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law and host of the weekly podcast, Good Law | Bad Law, is joined by Patty Dailey Lewis, Executive Director of the Beau Biden Foundation for the Protection of Children, to discuss a little-discussed consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic: the increased threat to children. With children at home, that means more children spending more unmonitored time in unsafe home environments.  As children spend more time on-line, there is also an increased danger from internet predators.   The Beau Biden Foundation’s mission, carrying on the legacy of the late former Delaware Attorney General and son of former Vice President Joe Biden, is to prevent child abuse and crimes against children through effectively educating adults and children, to develop the next generation of child welfare professionals and to strengthen child protection laws around the country. Aaron and Patty discuss increasing concerns about internet safety and online predators, the growing threat to children in unsafe home environments, the importance of parents educating themselves and their kids, and the crucial role of conversation, expectation, and heightened awareness.   What happens when the eyes of the world aren’t watching anymore? Patty explains that 9 in 10 victims are abused by someone they know or trust, emphasizing that we are all home now as result of the pandemic, and that reporters of abuse often are educators and medical professionals. Patty says that reports of abuse have plummeted… but that doesn’t mean the abuse has stopped but more likely is because teachers and health care providers are spending far less time with eyes-on these at-risk kids. Aaron and Patty talk about what we can do to help children and to stop abuse, as well as the Foundation’s available resources for guidance, education, and prevention.   Prior to her position at the Foundation, Patty served as Deputy Attorney General and Director of the Family Division of the Delaware Department of Justice. A passionate advocate for children, Patty has worked in the field of family and child advocacy since 1985. She has served as a commissioner on the Child Protection Accountability Commission, the Governor’s Steering Committee for the Protection of Children, the Victims Advisory Council, and more. Patty is also an Adjunct Professor at Delaware Law School.        To learn more about the Beau Biden Foundation and to access their full list of resources, please visit their website here. Candidates in each race will answer the same set of questions to allow Delaware voters to get to know them and compare them. In the race for Delaware Attorney General, incumbent Democrat Matt Denn chose not to run for another term. That prompted four Democrats to throw their hats in the ring to replace him. Kathy Jennings, Chris Johnson, Tim Mullaney, and LaKresha Roberts will face off in a Democratic primary next month. There is currently no Republican on the ballot after Peggy Marshall Thomas dropped out of the race in mid-August, but state GOP officials say they are looking for someone to step in and run. They have until Sept. 4 to name a new candidate. This is LaKresha Roberts' first run for elected office. She was a Deputy Attorney General under then Attorney General Beau Biden, and has served under current AG Matt Denn as both head of the Family Division and then Chief Deputy Attorney General.
