Michael Ball, president and lead portfolio manager at Weatherstone Capital Management, says that while the economy appears to be headed for a soft landing, that smooth ride and the first rate cuts have already been priced into the bond market, which means that bonds are not giving much cushion right now against any softness that could lead to a recession. He notes that higher quality bonds in floating-rate bank loans, short-term high yield and other niches are strong values in current conditions, especially when deriving income from sources like dividends is pricey, given stock market valuations. George Kinder, president, The Kinder Institute of Life Planning — a pioneer in the "life planning" realm of financial planning — discusses his latest project, a self-published book about achieving balance and happiness in life, called "The Three Domains of Freedom: Each Moment is Yours, Your Life is Yours, Civilization is Yours." Plus, Mark Yusko, chief investment officer at Morgan Creek Capital Management, discusses tactically using ETFs in the Market Call.

What are the important considerations that researchers should take when they work with underrepresented communities? In this episode, Under the Cortex hosts Patricia Rodriguez Espinosa and Luz Garcini in follow up to their thought-provoking appearance in APS's Science for Society Webinar, “Helping Underrepresented Populations Through Community-Oriented Research.” Dr. Rodriguez Espinosa, PhD., MPH, is a native of Habana, Cuba, and a clinical psychologist by training. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health and also serves as the Associate Director of Research for the Office of Community Engagement at Stanford Medicine. The goal of her research is to decrease health inequities among racial/ethnic minority populations, particularly Latinx and immigrant communities, through transdisciplinary and community-engaged scholarship. Dr. Luz Garcini is the Interim Director of the Center for Community and Public Health at the Kinder Institute for Urban Research, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences, and a faculty scholar at the Baker Institute for Public Policy at Rice University. Her research focuses on identifying, understanding, and addressing the health needs of historically marginalized communities from a community-engaged approach. As experts in the field, Espinosa and Garcini share their ideas and best practices about how to center community voices in psychological research. The conversation with Özge G. Fischer-Baum highlights why such efforts are important for meaningful research with marginalized groups. Conducting research in a manner that involves the community and provides direct avenues for them to be empowered through new knowledge or addressing their needs allows research to have a more bi-directional benefit. If you've been a listener to this podcast for some time, you are likely well aware of the things to look for when hiring a financial planner. However, your friends may not be. If the topic of finances comes up, do the right thing: educate your friends and family on how to find a good advisor. What happens when you don't help your friends and family I recently had a client who came to me with a concern for a family member. Her cousin inherited a sizable sum of money and hired a financial advisor to assist with the logistics. My client expressed concern about a few aspects of the plan her cousin received, in particular, the number of life insurance policies she was encouraged to obtain, and did not understand some of the recommended investments. When it comes to Financial Advisors: Ask the Right Questions We talked about how my client could help her cousin with regard to asking the right questions of her new financial planner. This advice applies to anyone interested in obtaining financial services so I decided to share her story and a list of nine questions anyone should ask when hiring a financial advisor. I've also taken the liberty of including my answers as a reference point for any interview conducted with potential financial planners. 9 Questions to Ask When Interviewing a Potential Financial Advisor Are you a fiduciary? YES! I started my own Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) company, licensed in the states of MA, CA, and PA. These states require that I act as a fiduciary for my RIA and all my clients. What are your professional qualifications and credentials I am a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), a Registered Life Planner (RLP®) and a Chartered Financial Counselor (ChFC®). When I started my RIA in 2018, I immediately enrolled in the CFP® curriculum. It took a few years to complete the required college-level courses, pass the comprehensive exam, and fulfill the work requirement (2-3 years of full-time work in the industry). I have also taken the required coursework for the Registered Life Planner in 2021 - a year of classes and work provided by the Kinder Institute. How are you paid? What are your fees and how are they structured (hourly, flat fee, percentage of assets under management)? Are there any additional costs I should be aware of? I typically work with new clients in a flat fee arrangement to provide comprehensive planning. You can always find the latest fees and services listed right on my website. This is a one-time fee to cover all the initial planning together. Often, clients will engage me to provide ongoing services. This service is also a flat-fee, yearly arrangement, based somewhat on net worth and paid monthly. Again, those transparent fees are listed on my website. There are no other fees paid to me. Sometimes I will recommend services that have associated costs (estate planning, tax preparation, life insurance, etc) - but I always let you know the potential costs of these services, paid directly to other professionals, with no commissions or incentives for me. How long have you been working as a financial advisor? What is your experience with clients in situations similar to mine? I started my own RIA in 2018 and have been working with clients in the years since. I primarily work with busy parents who want to get organized with their finances to ensure a successful future for themselves and their children. What is your investment philosophy? How do you select investments for your clients? Can you explain your approach to risk management? I believe in using low-cost index funds, in a mostly buy+hold approach, which involves...
George Kinder, president of The Kinder Institute of Life Planning and one of the leading lights in the financial planning industry, talks about his new initiative, "Fiduciary in All Things," which seeks to apply a fiduciary standard to more than just money relationships. While most stripes of financial adviser have an obligation to act as a fiduciary -- meaning they put the client's interest ahead of their own -- Kinder believes a straightforward golden-rule like standard cold help restore civility in politics and society, would make consumers happy and would make politicians more interested in serving their voters than being reelected by them. Also on the show, Lily Vittayarukskul, chief executive officer at Waterlily -- which won the FinTech competition at the recent FinCon conference -- discusses the real costs of long-term care and how families making care decisions need to think beyond insurance to do a thorough analysis, plus Ed Slott of IRAhelp.com returns to the show to answer another question from a listener.

Stephen Klineberg, Founding Director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University, takes us inside the Houston Area Survey—now in it's 40th year—and Houstonians evolving attitudes towards immigration.
George Kinder, president of The Kinder Institute of Life Planning -- generally recognized as the biggest moving force behind the life-planning approach to personal financial management -- says that investors need to look at where they can minimize risks in current conditions, but do that without blowing up financial plans because they are better off holding to their plans than changing them just because of current or even persistent economic and global events. Kinder says that the pandemic and other conditions have actually helped many people make progress on their life plans, because it simplified the economics for many people and helped them focus on what is important. In the Danger Zone segment, Kyle Guske of New Constructs looks at Airbnb and Squarespace, two stocks that have been hammered during the market's recent fall but where he believes the troubles are only starting and there's another big loss to come. And in the Market Call, hedge-fund manager Steven Grey of Grey Value Management discusses the importance of getting your buy prices right, noting that buy-and-hold investors who overpay dramatically for a stock are committing a form of 'slow-motion financial suicide.'
I am so happy to have you here today, I am interviewing my good friend, George Kinder. George is known as the father of life planning. He was a financial advisor who wrote this amazing book that impacted me many years ago around The Seven Stages of Money Maturity and inspired my work. And today, we're having a very different kind of conversation because he's talking about his latest book which he is giving away for free. And, it is poetry that's oriented to the present moment. He ended up chronicling with photographs and with these poems over the course of a year what he experiences in the place that he lives on a pond not that far from Walden pond. But how the nature in this seasons affect his life and it's just a really fun conversation. I love George's work, and I know you'll really enjoy it. He shares with us his insights: Right and, and I mean it's when you think about each moment is a moment potentially a freedom for you, and if you take more moments in your life and live more freedom in here. Every encounter you make is going to have that in it, and people are going to see that and feel it and spread it in their own way we don't know. It's a mystery how we impact things. And you know if you get lost in the civilization piece of it and think – ‘Oh it's got a loss, got to change or the votes have to go this way'. Well yeah, I mean that's what you're kind of fighting for, in a way. But if there's a certain randomness to it. There's too much energy around the attachment to the result, just do the good work. And, things will come about. Transformation will occur. And everywhere I go, I make sure this is part of it, because all we need is one piece of legislation that would require this – ‘a fiduciary standard of obligation is required for all institutions – corporate, nonprofit, and governmental to place the interests of all stakeholders of humanity; of democracy; and the living planet that sustains us. First, above their own self-interest so it's where the reason we're seeing this chaos right now is because we've allowed kind of greed and arrogance. We've rewarded more greed and arrogance that we've rewarded wisdom and compassion. Absolutely, I mean it's something we don't really even fully understand Confucius. I love reading the ancient masters and teachers. And, one of the things that he said he was, he lived in a time when there was tremendous corruption. And I don't know if you know this, but he died thinking that he failed. There was so much corruption in China was at that point in five or six or seven, different warring states, wars, terrorism, terrible stuff. And he figured out how to solve it.
