Foundations of Amateur Radio
Bald Yak 11, the goo between hardware and software

Foundations of Amateur Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 15, 2025 5:57

Foundations of Amateur Radio Recently I received a question in relation to the Bald Yak project. If you're not familiar, "The Bald Yak project aims to create a modular, bidirectional and distributed signal processing and control system that leverages GNU Radio." I know that I've said that several times now and I suspect I'm going to say it several more times before we're done. I was asked about a specific radio and if this project could make it use a frequency that the supplied software didn't cover. The answer is deceptively simple and if you know me at all, you know what's coming: "It depends". As with many things, what it depends on is not fixed. I'll come back to the question, but I'm making a diversion past a magical place, the local hardware store. You can buy everything you need to build a house with the caveat that some assembly is required. GNU Radio is similar for building a signal processing system, but, wait for it, some assembly is required. In the context of GNU Radio this means that you'll need to collect all the bits and wire them together, fortunately you're unlikely to need Personal Protective Equipment or access to a First Aid Kit, unless of course the idea of playing with computers gives you palpitations, in which case I'd recommend that you go see your doctor. One of the less obvious things you'll come across with GNU Radio is how to bring signal processing into the physical realm, in other words, how do you get a signal into your computer, known as a "source", and get it out, called a "sink". The ability to talk to physical hardware arrives in roughly three different ways. Let's call them, "native", "library", and "abstraction". Native access requires that GNU Radio already knows about the hardware out of the box. Library access requires that the hardware manufacturer has provided software libraries, also known as drivers, allowing GNU Radio to communicate, and finally, abstraction is where a third party has written a library that knows how to talk to hardware from different manufacturers. The distinction between these is almost arbitrary, for example abstraction might require a driver from a hardware manufacturer. Similarly, because all this software is open source, native can include software from other projects, like the RTL-SDR blocks from Osmocom, Open Source Mobile Communications, and UHD blocks written by Ettus Research, which in turn can be seen as an abstraction. As I said, some assembly required. I will point out that this provides a great deal of flexibility, albeit at the cost of complexity, there's still no such thing as a free lunch. At this point you might shake your head and run away. I get that, it can be daunting. Before you do, consider the scenario where you have a working system and you upgrade your hardware. In a GNU Radio world you'll need to figure out how to configure the new hardware and then all your other stuff will continue to work. The alternative is upgrading each of your applications to connect to your new radio and in doing so, run the risk of making your old radio obsolete, even if you are collecting them .. let's say for posterity rather than hoarding .. because radio amateurs never hoard anything .. right? Back to the original question. Can GNU Radio make a radio use frequencies that the software that came with the radio cannot? As I said, "it depends". First of all, the hardware needs to actually be able to support the frequency. Then someone needs to have written a library to use that frequency, then GNU Radio needs to be able to use that library. That said, the chances of that happening are much higher than the chance of the hardware manufacturer rolling out this feature within your lifetime. Before you start yelling at me, yes, this is manufacturer dependent, some provide open source tools, many still don't. There are alternative ways to access different frequencies. The PlutoSDR is a computer and radio in a box. You can connect to it, change some settings and have it access a whole lot more frequencies. In some ways it's like adding or removing jumpers on a traditional circuit-board. Another approach is to use an up- or down-converter. Essentially a piece of hardware connected between antenna and radio that translates frequencies to different bands. A down-converter allows you to use the 23cm band on a radio that's only capable of 70cm. Similarly, an up-converter allows your 70cm radio to hear HF signals. If you see a symmetry here, you didn't imagine it. You need both to transmit and receive, sold together in the same box as a transverter. Just so we're clear, the radio is still using the 70cm band, but the RF coming in and out of the antenna connected to the transverter is on a different band entirely. It's why my Yaesu FT-857d has three menu options, 89, 90 and 91, to adjust the display to show the actual RF frequency. As an aside, you could use this functionality if your radio is off frequency by a known amount. As I've said before, GNU Radio is a powerful tool. It contains many different moving parts, the system is complex and unwieldy, but with it comes the promise of doing some amazing stuff. The whole point of the Bald Yak project is to make this all accessible to the wider amateur community, not just computer geeks and software radio nerds. If you have questions, feel free to drop me a line. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

Jason Burns who is Executive Director at Last Call Foundation and he's been a Firefighter since 2006. He has spent much of his career advocating for better and safer working conditions for his firefighters. He currently serves as a District Vice President for the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts. Jason has also been a part of the team of people who have collaborated on a nation wide effort to rid firefighters' personal protective equipment of toxic PFAS chemicals. PFAS is used in fire fighter turnout gear and poses an unnecessary occupational threat. Recent studies have shown that all three layers of firefighter turnout gear contain Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), a class of fluorinated chemicals known as “forever chemicals” which have been linked to cancer and other serious health effects. These studies highlight the risks associated with the materials and finishes used in turnout gear even before it is exposed to its first fire. With Jason, we talk about his experience as a firefighter, what he's seen in the field, the nation wide effort he's apart of, what risk this puts firefighters at, and alternatives fire departments can use instead. What is PPE? On today's podcast - we're going to be answering the question "What is PPE?".  So stay tuned. You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com. If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener - this podcast is going to be different from most you listen to.  It's based around exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips.  And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! What is PPE? After being part of a global pandemic with Covid - it's highly unlikely that you're unaware of what PPE is.  But if you were unaware that wearing a mask and/or gloves is considered PPE - then the following will be for you. PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment. As with all topics we cover here on the podcast - this will be a very high-level look at PPE.  There are many other PPE options available besides the ones we'll cover here.  To keep things short and to the point - here are the primary ones you need to be aware of. Eyes | Glasses Ears | Ear Plugs and Ear Muffs Lungs | Masks and Respirators Head | Hard Hats Hands | Gloves Feet | Steel Toed Boots Back | Braces Body | Braces, Harnesses, and Protective Clothing The two most important PPE sources you need to follow are the OSHA Guidelines required at your facility - as well as the training and guidelines set forth by management. Remember - your health and safety is your boss when it comes to PPE.  If you think you're getting away with something by not wearing it - you're only fooling yourself.  It only takes a moment of not wearing PPE to introduce issues, injuries, and in the worst cases - death.  Don't roll the dice when it comes to your health and safety. We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. If you've ever been to or worked in a warehouse - you know just how important safety is to both management and staff.  It's almost impossible to go 10 steps without seeing Safety Tape, Angles, Signs, and/or products.  It's these items that show us how to be safe and avoid danger in the workplace.  And if you're looking for the best products to make this happen - look no further than Mighty Line! Mighty Line Floor Signs / Floor Markings offer the best industrial products out there! Go to MightyLineTape.com/SafetyTips to request a Sample Pack of their incredible Safety Signs and Floor Markings. What makes Mighty Line the superior choice in keeping your facility safe and productive? Mighty Line's Signs and Marking come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes.  And if they don't have what you're looking for in stock - their Customize It Program allows you to create exactly what you're looking for.  Mighty Line offers a Limited 3-Year Warranty on their Floor Signs and Markings. Welcome to episode 5 of Today is the Day Changemakers, 'Where You Start is Only Part of the Journey.' In this episode, I interview Kristina Henderson, CEO, Henderson Promos and 2020 Mrs. New Jersey American. Henderson Promos is a certified women owned business. The concept for this business started with Bart, Kristina's husband, making t-shirts in their kitchen to help fund his college education. Kristina's journey did not start with her thinking that she would be a business owner leading an organization, but where you start is truly only part of your journey.  This interview is a great example of how following your heart and doing what you love can lead you down multiple paths until you come upon the one that really lights you up. It is what you learn along the way that helps to create who you are today. We are all evolving and as long as we stay open we are able to give ourselves permission to follow our truth. Kristina started here career path as a flight attendant, went off to community college, went to Boston University for journalism, and found a love for giving back along the way. Now she is doing that through working with many not-for-profit organizations including Tigger House Foundation, Fulfill, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore, and the Zzak G. Applaud Our Kids Foundation, amongst others. Her and her husband Bart, also founded the Giving Back Forum in 2019 bringing many non-profits together to share their missions and programming. Kristina and her husband Bart through Henderson Promos just donated 100,000 PPE masks. They are on a mission to distribute them to food banks and non-profits across five statesWhen listening to Kristina share the answer to 'if I knew then what I know now" you will hear a resounding theme. Truly all about confidence, believing in yourself, and not listening to the noise that sometimes surrounds us.Thank you to Kristina for sharing her journey. We wish Kristina good luck as she heads to Las Vegas to compete for the Mrs. American National title! On the next episode of Today is the Day Changemakers, I welcome Andrea Plaza, Founder & Chief Storyteller of Andrea Plaza, LLC. The title of the episode is Let Your Passion Drive Your Purpose. I am so excited to share this next episode as it also speaks to why people are put in our path.

Bump caps, safety glasses, forearm guards, and slip-resistant boots make up the basic PPE that all team members should use consistently.  A bump cap can protect technicians from bumps, scrapes, or cuts that can be caused by bumping or walking into an object while performing lower bay duties. Safety glasses are used when performing tasks that have the potential to damage your eyes. Eye injuries can be vastly decreased or avoided by the practice of wearing safety glasses. A forearm guard fits around the elbow, part of the arm, and hand to protect against abrasive materials, sharp objects, hot exhaust or engine parts. Slipping, tripping, and falling are one of the main causes of accidents in a quick lube. One of the ways to prevent falling and causing injury is by wearing slip and oil resistant boots. Everybody puts their boots on the same way.  And what that means is, it doesn't matter your title here.  It could be the people on our leadership team, Bill and I, or it could be the person coming in their first day on the job on the assembly line...everyone is the same. And everyone is going to be treated the same. And it goes back to that first [value], we work until it's done. If there are boxes that need to go out the door, or we need to make more barbells, you're going to see the top leadership down going out and helping right now. We did get overrun before we could hire some people- we have everyone in our office right now, they're doing shifts on our production floor. And that's really what this is all about, and you see people getting experiences that you normally wouldn't have. To go out and build a barbell, and maybe you're in our IT department, a lot of places you wouldn't have that opportunity, but we live by that standard. Everybody puts their boots on the same way.” - Caity Henniger Caity Henniger has been a lifelong athlete.  In high school she led her basketball team to victory in 91 out of 102 games, was voted MVP of the 1998 Junior Olympic AAU circuit, and was a two-time state champion in both shot put and discus.  She went on to play collegiate ball at Ohio State where she averaged 15.4 points per game and set the school single-season record for three-pointers, with 106, earning her the Edward S. Steitz Award as the nation's best three-point shooter.  In 2005, Caity joined the WNBA as a player for the Charlotte Sting. After multiple leg surgeries led Caity to retire from basketball, she was drawn to the competitive side of CrossFit.  In 2008,  with just a few months of CrossFit experience, she took first place at the 2008 CrossFit Games.  Caity would go on to become a fixture in the production side of the Games, working as an ESPN commentator and as a representative of Rogue Fitness. Shortly after Caity's 2008 CrossFit Games victory, she began playing a huge role in helping Rogue Fitness grow from a small e-commerce site to a major powerhouse in the fitness equipment industry.  With a focus on manufacturing quality, American-made products from local sources, Rogue now employs over 900 people at their massive 600,000 square foot campus in Columbus, Ohio. Recently, when Ohio issued a stay-at-home order in response to COVID-19, Rogue quickly pivoted their manufacturing processes to make Personal Protective Equipment for healthcare workers, a decision that is not only helping to keep healthcare workers safe, but is also helping to keep their local community employed. I had to opportunity to sit down with Caity to learn more about the mission and values Rogue was founded on, and how those principles are driving their business during this time of uncertainty.  We chatted about her days as a competitor,  how she balances her role as an executive with her own personal health,  and we were even able to steal a few minutes from Rogue's Director of Product Development, Ahmik Jones, to learn more about the processes behind shifting gears from manufacturing fitness equipment to manufacturing PPE.     In this episode we discuss: Caity's athletic background The history behind Rogue Fitness and their partnership with the CrossFit Games What led Rogue to branch out into manufacturing equipment for other sports Rogue's new facility and the Industrial Revolution 2.0 Rogue's three core values and how they implement them The story behind Don't Weaken Rogue's early response to COVID-19 How Rogue came to have a doctor as their Director of Product Development How Rogue made the decision to manufacture PPE for healthcare workers, and what the development process has been like Measures Rogue has taken encourage employees to embrace fitness and the positive impact they've seen as a result How Caity manages her time to allow for her own workouts and downtime away from work The mentors who helped Caity grow into a strong leader What a typical day looks like for Caity Stand-out moments where Caity has felt especially proud of the work Rogue is doing Three things that Caity does on a regular basis that have the biggest positive impact on her health One thing she thinks could have a big impact on her health but she has a hard time implementing What a healthy life looks like to Caity     You can follow Caity on Instagram and Twitter. Al Levi, Founder of 7-Power Contractor and Zoom Franchise Company and Ellen Rohr, President of Zoom Drain share how home services businesses can weather the storm of COVID-19 with accountability, urgency, and communication.  Prioritize Your Efforts Al shares how today's COVID-19 pandemic and hardships like 9/11, the 2008 recession, and Hurricane Katrina all serve as reminders that sometimes there is no playbook. It's times like these where his father's advice to “Act like you're going to be in business for a while” rings true and you just have to take everything one day at a time. Ellen adds that this is also when accountability and consequences become high priority. “What is different about this time now is that there is no luxury of time. You are going to survive and thrive only if you apply business basics with no excuses, if you take extreme ownership for this situation that you find yourself in. And I think my goal as a leader is to up my standards and the immediate consequences if people are going to do things if they put themselves or the team at risk… If you get them the PPE… and they don't use it, that puts the entire team at risk.” - Ellen Execute With Urgency Systems matter. Both Al and Ellen emphasize how whether you already had systems in place or you are wishing you did right now, they will be what carry you through. Start creating them, leaning on them, and improving them. Don't wait. Take action.  Ellen outlines the numbers that matter in their Financial Quick Check system that Zoom Drain monitors weekly in dollars and percentages to see where they can improve: SalesCost of goods soldGross marginOverheadProfitCash flow position (What do you have in cash in accounts receivable and what do you have in bills to pay right now. More cash helps you weather the storm better.) Communicate! Let your employees and customers know what you are doing to protect them and the steps you are taking for safety and health. Lead from the front. By communicating exactly what the experience will be like you can establish expectations with your customers and build trust. “I know it sounds weird because we are talking about sewage, but we are the originators of how it stopped the Black Plague from happening all of these years. And if we fall out of our habits in sewage or any plumbing, you guys have all seen the signs about ‘The plumber protects the health of the nation,' that's not just some words written on a page, that is a calling to all of us.” - Al Ellen and Al highlight a few tips to keep top of mind while communicating: Call and FaceTime in order to communicate.Remember that the nuances with the added Personal Protective Equipment need explanation.Give people the benefit of the doubt.Be kind.Relationships are everything.Share the why behind your standards. Create Lifetime Customers Al says you have to pull the curtain back. Proactively communicate how the magic happens, how your business does things, and how you are going above and beyond during the pandemic. Ellen emphasizes the importance of leveraging this moment to share the why behind your business, and make your interactions human by really listening to them.  What You Can Do Right now Financially: Find responses and guidance on steps you can take for your business from credible resources: U.S. Small Business Administration Within the Care Act, it looks like there is relief for payroll if you keep paying your employees, so this is an important step to take.Contact your CPA and financial planner to help you sort through this. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Be resourceful.Share information and how you are solving problems with fellow business owners.Tweak your Customer Service Representative (CSR) script to let customers know what you're doing to keep them safe. Your customers will remember how you treated them during this time of crisis. These employees are part of your family. If you can, think long term during this time. Most importantly, remember that everyone has a role to play and you have to work together and lean on each other. Nobody can carry this burden alone.  “There are many heroes in our life… There's a reason we are essential workers. It's because we are essential. And when this passes, I want you to remember that we need to charge the right price… there's a reason you have to be in business right now. This is why you have to have all the money to buy this stuff, the PPE. This is why you have to get the systems in place. You don't owe it to just yourself, or even your staff, you owe it to the community you serve.” - Al
