This is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Friday, August 4th, 2023. Isn’t it about time to take action on how you're going to give your children and grandchildren a good music education? Moses, David, and all the Saints of the church have worshiped God with musical might, so let’s be confidently found doing the same. Bohnet Music Academy instructs children and adults in how to be musically literate. That’s everything you need to know and do as the musician God made you to be. Lessons are available locally in Moscow, ID and online. What’s great is that in addition to getting vocal training, you can also study the piano, guitar, violin, cello, drums, or the trumpet. Visit Bohnetma.com/crosspolitic for more information on how to equip your family to serve God’s musical commands. B-O-H-N-E-T MA.com/crosspolitic http://bohnetma.com/crosspolitic https://www.dailywire.com/news/pittsburgh-synagogue-shooter-sentenced-to-death-by-jury Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooter Sentenced To Death By Jury A jury on Wednesday sentenced the man who gunned down 11 people at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh to death, nearly five years after the attack. The shooter, whom I will not name, was found guilty in June of all 63 counts he was facing, including 11 counts of obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death and 11 counts of hate crimes resulting in death. The jury’s unanimous decision was announced by U.S. District Judge Robert J. Colville, who presided over the trial, which took place in downtown Pittsburgh. The judge will officially sentence the shooter to death later this week. The victims were from three Jewish congregations who gathered at the Tree of Life synagogue on October 27, 2018. Two other worshipers and five police officers were also wounded by the gunman, who unloaded a Colt AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and three Glock .357 handguns during his attack. Victims of the shooting were: Joyce Fienberg, Richard Gottfried, Rose Mallinger, Jerry Rabinowitz, Cecil and David Rosenthal, Bernice and Sylvan Simon, Daniel Stein, Melvin Wax, and Irving Younger. The shooting is considered by authorities to be the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in U.S. history. Attorneys representing the shooter asked for a life sentence if he pleaded guilty, but prosecutors, with the support of most of the victims’ families, refused and took the case to trial to pursue the death penalty. The shooter’s lawyers also argued that he was impaired by mental illness and a delusional belief system took over his thinking, dictating that he had to kill Jews to stop a genocide of white people, the Associated Press reported. “He turned this place of worship into an exhibit in his criminal trial,” U.S. Attorney Eric Olshan said while arguing for jurors to recommend the death penalty, according to the Pittsburgh Gazette. A criminal complaint showed that the man told authorities he intentionally targeted the synagogue because he hoped to kill Jewish people. The shooter’s defense attorneys acknowledged that he had done the shooting but asked jurors to “scrutinize his intent.” We now go across the pond for this one! https://thenationalpulse.com/2023/08/02/uk-tories-enforce-diversity-quotas-for-new-members-of-parliament/ UK Tories Enforce Diversity Quotas for New Members of Parliament. The United Kingdom’s ‘Conservative’ Party has implemented new diversity quotas and guidelines for selecting candidates – would-be Members of Parliament (MPs). The targets include age as well as ethnicity and gender. Diversity quotas are in place even before candidates are considered as the party’s “Sifting Committee,” which is responsible for sorting through applicants after applying for the position, must have specific characteristics: “The Sifting Committee must comprise a minimum of one woman and one young person under the age of 30. The additional Association members of the Committee should reflect the different interests of the constituency, i.e. should have a balance of gender, age and ethnicity.” After the initial sift, the Selection Committee must “recognise their responsibility” to ensure that candidates are chosen in a way that “displays diversity and variety and which has a due regard to the local profile of the constituency” and guarantees a balance of genders. The selection rules also state that the process must be “inclusive and free from discrimination” and “fully acknowledge and embrace diversity,” except when considering female candidates, in which case “some degree of positive discrimination is permitted.” The rules add that anything considered “indirect discrimination” is prohibited; meaning, any requirement that could have a “disproportionate impact” on one group. President Donald Trump highlighted the Conservative’s shift to the “far left” in an interview with Nigel Farage earlier this year. More recently, the party expelled a mayor for ‘repenting‘ after attending a Pride event. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/aug/02/orlando-magic-nba-team-donated-ron-desantis-super-pac Orlando Magic donated $50,000 to Ron DeSantis Super Pac The Orlando Magic NBA team has donated $50,000 to a Super Pac supporting the presidential bid of Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis. According to Federal Election Commission records, the Never Back Down Super Pac received the donation made by the basketball team on 26 June. Further results showed the team making donations to other political causes in past years, with $500 going to Conservative Results in 2016, $2,000 to Maverick Pac USA in 2014 and another $500 to Linda Chapin for Congress in 2000. In an initial statement to Popular Information, a Magic spokesperson said: “We don’t comment publicly on political contributions.” However, in a later follow-up statement, a spokesperson clarified the donation, saying that the check was “dated/delivered on May 19”, five days before DeSantis declared his presidential bid. “This gift was given before Governor DeSantis entered the presidential race. [It] was given as a Florida business in support of a Florida governor for the continued prosperity of central Florida,” the spokesperson said. According to Never Back Down’s website, the Super Pac describes itself as a “grassroots movement to elect Governor Ron DeSantis for president in 2024”. The donation has drawn criticism online, particularly given the Magic’s claims of supporting “diversity, equity and inclusion all year long” and DeSantis’s culture wars in which he announced plans to block DEI programs in state colleges among other legislation targeting minority and marginalized groups including LGBTQ+ communities. The Orlando Magic team is under Amway North America, a multi-level marketing firm co-established by Richard DeVos, the late father-in-law of Trump’s education secretary Betsy DeVos. Over the years, the DeVos family has made multiple donations to conservative organizations. In 2006, the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation made a $540,000 donation to Focus on the Family, a Colorado-based organization that opposes same-sex marriage and abortions, HuffPost reports. In 2008, Richard DeVos donated $100,000 to Florida4Marriage, a group that campaigned to add a state constitutional ban on same-sex marriages. “That’s just a sacred issue of respecting marriage,” Richard DeVos said in a 2009 interview in reference to his donation. Following reports of the donation, the National Basketball Players Association, a union representing NBA players, issued a statement on Wednesday, calling the donation “alarming”. “A political contribution from the Orlando Magic is alarming given recent comments and policies of its beneficiary. NBA governors, players and personnel have the right to express their personal political views, including through donations and statements. “However, if contributions are made on behalf of an entire team, using money earned through the labor of its employees, it is incumbent upon the team governors to consider the diverse values and perspectives of staff and players. “The Magic’s donation does not represent player support for the recipient,” the union said. https://www.boundingintosports.com/2023/08/shakeups-continue-at-espn-as-nba-analyst-mark-jackson-is-fired-after-10-years-with-the-network/ Shakeups Continue at ESPN As NBA Analyst Mark Jackson Is Fired After 10 Years With The Network Mark Jackson is a New York native who played his college basketball at St. John’s before being chosen by the Knicks in the first round of the 1987 draft. He spent two separate stints with the franchise, and his time in the shadows of The City That Never Sleeps had him ready for the big stage when he wanted to transition to television. He would go on to a coaching career by taking the helm in Golden State, just before the eventual arrival of Steve Kerr and a slew of NBA titles. Still, he rebounded nicely, and would later famously team with Mike Breen and Van Gundy to form one of the best broadcasting trios in all of sports. That is – until this week. In response, Mark Jackson released a long statement, saying goodbye: “This morning, unexpectedly, I was informed that my services were no longer needed at ESPN. Although shocked and dismayed with the suddenness of it all, I would like to thank ESPN and all the staff of the NBA ESPN crew for allowing me to be a part of the organization for the past 15+ years. I would also like to thank the NBA fans watching at home and in the arenas throughout the league for all of your support. To the NBA, a heartfelt thank you for allowing a kid to continue to accomplish his dreams. “It has been an honor to sit beside two LEGENDS in the business, who are like brothers to me, Mike Breen and Jeff Van Gundy, and learn so much from them,” the former Knicks standout continued. “Lisa Salters is a GOAT and like a sister to me and I’m so proud of the work she continues to do. To the best producer in the world, and my friend, Tim Corrigan, I give the utmost gratitude and thanks for always inspiring and supporting me. To all of the staff and crew, that may have never been seen on camera… please know that you were always seen by me and so greatly appreciated.” Jackson then concluded his sign-off from The Worldwide Leader in Sports gracefully, giving praise to God on his way out the door. “Finally, I wish greater measures of success to the new ESPN team. May they continue to elevate this game that has given me a home and a life. I leave ESPN with nothing but gratitude, all the while knowing that my highest praise goes to God! Through it all, He has always sustained me and His grace allows me to know that there are greater blessings ahead. I look forward to what He has in store next.” Jackson’s layoff is the latest in a series of cost-cutting moves by the network, which has experienced a sharp drop in popularity and profitability in recent years.

Most of us can point to a few key people who have made a real difference in our lives and careers - a family member, a coach, a boss. And many who get that kind of mentoring build on the lessons they learn to become leaders and role models themselves. Basketball star Chris Paul is a prime example. He had the support of a tight-knit family growing up, was mentored by a great coach in college, and as an NBA rookie looked to league veterans for guidance. Now, at age 38, he's the seasoned vet, a perennial All-Star across multiple teams who led the National Basketball Players Association from 2013 through the 2020 Covid-19 crisis and racial reckoning in the United States and is widely regarded as one of the best point guards of all time. Paul's new book is "Sixty-One: Life Lessons from Papa, On and Off the Court." Note: This episode was taped before the start of the 2023 NBA playoffs.
He is in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach as well as for being an assistant coach with the 1992 Olympic “Dream Team.” He played in the NBA for four teams over 15 years and was a nine-time All-Star and would later be named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history. Before ending his playing career, he took on the role of player-coach with two different teams. As a full-time coach, he guided the Seattle Supersonics -- winning a championship in 1978-79 -- and then the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Atlanta Hawks, the Toronto Raptors, and the New York Knicks. In the midst of all that, he also coached the U.S. men's basketball team to a gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He also served for nine years as vice president of the National Basketball Players Association, served as president of the NBA Coaches Association, held a number of jobs in the Supersonics' front office, and served as a game analyst on basketball television broadcasts. He also wrote an autobiography called, "Unguarded: My Forty Years Surviving in the NBA."

Under the new CBA, NBA players will not be tested for cannabis and can invest and have equity in the business of cannabis. Why now and who helped get this accomplished? Michele Roberts, former NBPA Executive Director joins the Bulls Talk podcast to discuss why cannabis consumption for professional athletes is needed and why they should be able to be on the ground floor of investing as well. Later in the pod, Roberts discusses being the first Black woman in professional sports to head a players union, the difficulties of the NBA Bubble in 2020 and much more.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The sides reached the five-year deal on Wednesday, two days before the start of the minor league season and hours after a federal judge gave final approval to a $185 million settlement reached with MLB last May of a lawsuit filed in 2014 alleging violations of federal minimum wage laws. Under the new deal, minimum salaries in Triple-A will rise from $17,500 to $45,800. MLB – MLB broadcasters adapting to faster pace under new rules Major league pitchers and batters aren't the only ones going on the clock this season. Big league broadcasters have also been using spring training to adjust to baseball's new rhythm amid a series of rules changes. When the season opens Thursday, Major League Baseball will usher in an age of sharper, quicker and more concise commentary. For a generation of play-by-play pros who grew up idolizing loquacious storytellers like Hall of Famer Vin Scully, it's been an adjustment. But not necessarily an unwelcome one. MLB – Cubs’ Happ: ‘Nothing really to report’ on negotiations All-Star outfielder Ian Happ appears poised to enter the season with an expiring contract after he and the Chicago Cubs were unable to agree on a new deal. The team says Drummond is out because of personal reasons. Coach Billy Donovan says he is hopeful about the possibility of Drummond traveling with the team ahead of Friday night’s game at Charlotte. Drummond posted on Thursday that it was time to focus on his mental health. NBA – NBA, players still talking about new deal as deadline looms NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says he’s hopeful that a new collective bargaining agreement between the league and its players can get done by the end of this week, though he stopped short of predicting that a deal would actually get struck. The league and the National Basketball Players Association are facing a midnight Friday deadline for either side to decide that they will opt out of the deal and end the current CBA on June 30. That opt-out deadline already has been extended twice, and Silver said the NBA’s plan is to exercise that option if there is no deal by Friday night. A subcommittee of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce held the first hearing Wednesday related to college sports in the House or Senate in more than two years. The intended focus was name, image and likeness compensation for athletes. College sports leaders have been asking for a federal law to bring uniform regulation to the way athletes can earn money through sponsorship or endorsement deals. MLB – Major League Baseball – Opening Day 2023 Today Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs, 2:20 p.m. Detroit Tigers at Tampa Bay Rays, 3:10 p.m. News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM 2:45 Chicago White Sox at Houston Astros, 7:08 p.m. MLB – MLB opening day offers clocks, shift bans, Ohtani and Judge A major shift is coming to Major League Baseball, starting on opening day today. New rules are now in effect. There will be clocks at stadiums to hurry along pitchers and hitters, and there are restrictions on defensive shifts for fielders. The full slate of 15 games includes matchups at Dodger Stadium, Fenway Park, Wrigley Field and Yankee Stadium. Aaron Judge will aiming at his own home run record, Shohei Ohtani will be trending with every pitch and swing and Houston manager Dusty Baker is trying to win another World Series ring. MLB – AP source: Minor leaguers reach 5-year labor deal with MLB Minor league baseball players reached a historic initial collective bargaining agreement with Major League Baseball on Wednesday that will more than double player salaries, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because details were not announced. Happ had “nothing really to report” and “no real comment on it.” He says he is not breaking off talks, but adds: “That also doesn't mean anything.” Happ is eligible for free agency after the upcoming season. Chicago hosts the Milwaukee Brewers on opening day on Thursday. The Cubs did lock in one key player, finalizing a $35 million, three-year contract infielder Nico Hoerner on Wednesday. That contract begins in 2024. Hoerner is moving to second base after playing shortstop last season with the arrival of All-Star Dansby Swanson on a $177 million, seven-year contract. NFL – NFL hits highs in diverse executives, lacks in head coaches The NFL took another step at the owners meetings to increase diversity throughout the league while continuing to face criticism and a lawsuit for lack of representation among head coaches. Each team is now required to have a person in charge of diversity, equity and inclusion. Currently, 15 clubs have a DEI head and two others have someone leading that department and another one. The league has reached milestone points in diverse hirings in the front office but critics point to the sidelines where there are only three Black head coaches in a sport that had 56.4% Black players in 2022. NCAABB – A different March Madness: Online hate for the athletes A toxic cauldron on social media is one of the minefields players in the NCAA Tournament must navigate. In an era of increased sensitivity to athlete mental health, never have there been more outside voices scrutinizing their every move. In the third part of a series on social media’s impact on March Madness, The Associated Press found that turning off social media is an option but not really a practical one. It’s unrealistic with the way society interacts in the 21st century. And many athletes need to use social media for endorsement deals. All of that, the AP found, comes with a toll best illustrated by spikes among athletes in anxiety and depression over the past two years. NCAAWBKB – Women making case in tourney for own March Madness TV deal The NCAA has gotten mostly positive reviews for its new women’s Sweet 16 format during March Madness. Hosting games it two cities instead of the traditional four set attendance records higher TV ratings. The two regionals combined to set an all-time attendance mark for the Sweet 16, following up the record mark set the first weekend. The switch in format was done for a few reasons including helping get a separate TV deal for the women's tournament. The current NCAA TV deal ends next summer.. The current NCAA TV deal ends next summer. The NCAA also hopes the success leads to more cities bidding to host the regional games and eventually the Final Four. The current NCAA TV deal ends next summer. The next bid cycle starts in July where regional hosting will be decided from 2027-31. Oklahoma City entered the night two games under .500 and hanging onto the final Western Conference play-in spot. The Thunder were coming off a loss to the Charlotte Hornets and couldn't afford another defeat against a team near the bottom of the league's standings. Williams answered the call with 27 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Lu Dort scored 20 points, Aaron Wiggins scored 19 and Josh Giddey added 18 for the Thunder. Jaden Ivey had 24 to lead the Pistons. Antetokounmpo added 17 rebounds and 12 assists to help the Bucks improve to 55-21. He returned after sitting out Monday night in a victory at Detroit because of a sore knee. Holiday had 18 points in the third quarter, when the Bucks scored a season-high 46 points to build a 12-point lead. He was 20 of 30 from the field with three 3-pointers and hit 8 of 10 free throws. Rookie Bennedict Mathurin led Indiana with 29 points. He is one of three mental health professionals presenting and will discuss the prevalence of suicide among today's youth, and highlight useful tools and strategies on how to approach real life scenarios concerning thoughts of suicide.Excerpt from André Napier in the People of PS Podcast: One of the tipping points for me deciding to go back to school was my then firstborn son was in school, in private school, and he was having some challenges, and ultimately that led to us getting him a neuropsych evaluation, and we determined that he had ADHD. So I was very reluctant, frustrated about the diagnosis. I did not want to accept it. It didn't make sense. ADHD didn't make sense. Folks telling you that your child's brain may not be wired the same as other folks, and then they start talking about what the effects of that will be for him long term. So I think that that really was the deciding factor for me to go back to school, was that I needed to find out more. And the more I found out, the more I needed to find out. And that's how I started out in clinical therapy.

Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) and GOP challenger and former NFL star Herschel Walker. Warnock appeared to hold a slim lead over Walker with around 98 percent of the vote counted. Warnock, however, did not reach the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff in the state. No election forecasters, including The Associated Press, have called the race. Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver garnered about 2.1 percent of the vote. If the Georgia Senate race heads to a runoff, only Walker and Warnock would remain on the ballot—and Oliver would be removed. Walker, meanwhile, appeared to be more optimistic. “I don’t come to lose,” Walker said, according to AP. A runoff campaign would be a four-week blitz that, depending on the outcomes in other Senate contests, could reprise the 2020 election cycle, when two Senate runoffs in Georgia doubled as a national winner-take-all battle for Senate control. Victories from Warnock and Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) left the chamber divided 50–50 between the two major parties, with Vice President Kamala Harris giving Democrats the tie-breaking vote. Runoff dynamics this year would vary widely depending on the Senate makeup. If the Senate majority already has been settled, it could make it easier for Warnock to frame the race as a localized choice between himself and Walker. But if the Georgia outcome determines which party will hold a majority and set the agenda, Walker could have the upper-hand in his effort to tie Warnock to President Joe Biden and national Democrats. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/gop-candidate-unseats-house-veteran-historic-upset-dems-took-granted GOP candidate unseats Democratic leader in historic upset: Dems 'took it for granted' Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Sean Patrick Maloney was defeated by GOP nominee and State Assemblyman Mike Lawler in a historic House loss in Tuesday's midterm election. Lawler, who ran heavily on crime and the economy, will unseat the longtime congressman who was first elected in 2013, The Associated Press projects. "I think he took it for granted." Lawler said in an interview with Fox News Digital on Wednesday. "As recently as a month ago he was traveling to Paris, London and Geneva to raise money for the DCCC. He did not start campaigning seriously in the district until a couple of weeks ago." Maloney has come under fire in recent days for suggesting that families struggling with the impacts of inflation eat Chef Boyardee. These comments come on the heels of Maloney's frequent trips to high-end European cities over the summer to raise money for House Democrats. Lawler made crime a key focus of his campaign, running in a district where over half of the households have a cop, veteran or first-responder living in them, according to Lawler. Despite this big-ticket win, the upset was one of only a handful House pickups for Republicans on a night where many political analysts and polls predicted a "red wave." The balance of power in the House is still in play with many races still uncalled. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/ballot-initiatives-protecting-access-abortion-win-across-five-states-midterms Ballot initiatives protecting access to abortion win across five states in midterms Voters across the country backed a series of ballot initiatives on Tuesday protecting access to abortion. The results were largely uniform from California to Montana to Michigan. Voters backed proposals to enshrine abortion rights into law, while simultaneously striking down efforts by conservatives to restrict the practice. In Michigan, voters passed a ballot initiative creating a right to abortion within the state's constitution. The initiative, which passed by roughly double digits, according to the Michigan Board of Elections, also strikes down a 1931 law that bans abortion. Voters backed similar ballot measures in Vermont and California enshrining abortion rights into their respective state constitutions. In Republican-led Kentucky and Montana, meanwhile, voters struck down ballot initiatives seeking to restrict access to abortion. Kentucky's citizens opted against amending the state constitution to clarify there is no right to abortion or a requirement for the government to fund the practice. The initiative failed by a 52-47% margin with nearly 90% of votes counted. Montana's voters, on the other hand, are poised to reject a ballot measure codifying into state law federal protections for infants born after a botched abortion. The initiative would have defined an infant "alive" at any gestational age as a legal person. It would have also instituted criminal penalties for health care providers that did not provide life-saving care to infants born during an attempted abortion. While votes are still outstanding and the ballot initiative has not been officially rejected, opponents have a healthy lead. https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2022/11/08/2022-election-cycle-sets-midterm-spending-record-16-7-billion/ 2022 Election Cycle Sets Midterm Spending Record of $16.7 Billion The 2022 election cycle set a midterm spending record of $16.7 billion, according to OpenSecrets. The total represents money spent on both federal and state races. No other midterm election has seen as much money at the state and federal levels as the 2022 elections,” Sheila Krumholz, OpenSecrets’ executive director, told CNBC. “We’re seeing record-breaking totals spent on elections up and down the ballot.” Democrats raised over $1.1 billion from grassroots donors in 2022, double the amount of Republicans’ grassroots efforts, according to the WinRed and ActBlue fundraising platforms, the Financial Times reported. Republican PACs and committees out-raised Democrat committees and PACs by about 50 percent for a total of $1.1 billion. The Republican donors who greatly contributed to the effort were historically active GOP backers. Half of the GOP committee and PAC money came from about 10 donors, “including $77mn from Richard Uihlein, $67mn from Ken Griffin, $44mn from Jeff Yass and $40mn from Timothy Mellon. Speaking ahead of his video address to the global climate summit held in Egypt, Zelenskyy laid out several conditions for returning to the negotiating table with Moscow, including respecting Ukraine’s pre-war borders, offering reparations for the damage done to Kyiv and prosecuting those who have committed war crimes, according to the WSJ. The U.S. urged Kyiv to maintain a public appearance of openness to negotiating with Russia, even while acknowledging Russian leaders will not agree to withdrawal from occupied areas of Ukraine, The Washington Post reported Saturday. U.S. leaders have reiterated that Ukraine has the final word on negotiating terms, according to the WSJ. Kyiv previously insisted no further talks could happen unless new leadership took over at the Kremlin. Encouragement to keep an open posture toward negotiating with Russia is intended to secure the lasting support of allies, officials familiar with the matter told the Post. Many governments, including the United States, face growing opposition from constituencies concerned that funding the Ukrainian resistance could deepen economic hardships as inflation refuses to let up and food shortages loom. Zelenskyy also on Monday urged “unwavering unity” in the U.S. until Ukraine sees “peace restored,” according to AFP, as the U.S. will see votes cast for midterm elections Tuesday evening. U.S. support for Ukraine could dip if the GOP achieves a majority in the House and Senate after the elections, a possibility increasingly on the table as Republican favorability rose in pre-election polls. Republicans have been more willing than their Democratic counterparts in Congress to express skepticism about the logic behind weapons transfers, and Republican voters consistently fall lower than Democrats in the opinion polls measuring willingness to support Ukraine. However, Republican leaders have doubled down on their stance in support for Ukraine. This podcast explains the concept of the negotiation pie, which is the additional value created through an agreement to work together. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Chicago Cubs 4, Cincinnati Reds 2 (Field of Dreams game Dyersville, IA) Cleveland Guardians 4, Detroit Tigers 3 – 10 Innings Kansas City Royals 5, Chicago White Sox 3 Cubs 4, Reds 2 – Smyly stars as Cubs beat Reds in 2nd ‘Field of Dreams’ game After the Griffeys played catch in Iowa, Drew Smyly took over. Smyly struck out nine in five scoreless innings, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-2 in Major League Baseball’s second “Field of Dreams” game. Seiya Suzuki reached three times and Nick Madrigal had three hits for Chicago in a throwback ballpark a short walk away from the main field for the 1989 movie. The night began with Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. and his father emerging from the iconic cornstalks to play catch in the outfield, delighting the sellout crowd of 7,823. Guardians 4, Tigers 3 – F/10 – Guardians top Tigers in 10 innings, extend win streak to 5 Rookie Oscar Gonzalez knocked in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the 10th inning and the Cleveland Guardians extended their winning streak to five games, beating the Detroit Tigers 4-3. Gonzalez’s hit off Gregory Soto allowed the Guardians to escape after they squandered a two-run lead in the ninth. Cleveland reliever Trevor Stephan opened the ninth by allowing a walk, a single and Jonathan Schoop’s RBI double that got Detroit within 3-2. Enyel De Los Santos came in with one out and gave up Eric Haase’s tying fielder’s-choice grounder. Bryan Shaw worked the 10th for his first save of the season. Royals 5, White Sox 3 – Greinke helps Royals beat Cease, White Sox 5-3 Zack Greinke worked out of trouble to hold Chicago scoreless into the seventh inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat Dylan Cease and the White Sox 5-3. Greinke allowed nine hits but didn’t walk a batter, striking out five while throwing 95 pitches in 6 1/3 innings. Vinnie Pasquantino homered and Nicky Lopez had a two-run single for the Royals, who won back-to-back four-game series for the first time since Aug. 11-18, 2014. Kansas City took three of four from visiting Boston before doing the same to Chicago. Cease allowed three hits and one run in six innings as his ERA dropped to 1.96. Tonight Detroit (Norris 0-4) at Chicago White Sox (Kopech 4-8), 7:10 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 6:50 Cubs are off (The Cubs resume their three game series with the Reds Saturday at 6:40 p.m. in Cincinnati) MLB – No Latino GMs in MLB after Avila firing, only 3 managers There are no Latino general managers left in Major League Baseball after the Detroit Tigers fired Al Avila. It’s a fact even St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol didn’t realize until Thursday. Marmol himself is one of only three Latino on-field managers. The others are Boston’s Alex Cora and Washington’s Dave Martinez. There were four when the season started, but the Toronto Blue Jays fired Charlie Montoyo last month. About 29% of the players on big league rosters to start this season were Latino or Hispanic, with the percentage of coaches just a tick higher. But that hasn’t translated to similar numbers in management positions on and off the field WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Last Night Las Vegas Aces 89, Chicago Sky 78 Aces 89, Sky 78 – Aces move atop WNBA standings with one game remaining Kelsey Plum had 25 points and four 3-pointers, Jackie Young scored 16 of her 22 points in the third quarter and the Las Vegas Aces beat the Chicago Sky 89-78 to move atop the WNBA standings with one game remaining. Las Vegas (25-10) and Chicago (25-10) are tied for the top spot, with the Aces holding a tiebreaker in the race for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. The Aces close the regular season on Sunday against Seattle, while the Sky play the Phoenix Mercury. A’ja Wilson and Riquna Williams each scored 12 points for Las Vegas. Kahleah Copper tied a career-high with 28 points for Chicago, which was undone by 17 turnovers. Tonight Washington Mystics at Indiana Fever, 7:00 p.m. NFL – National Football League – Preseason week 1 Last Night New York Giants 23, New England Patriots 21 Baltimore Ravens 23, Tennessee Titans 10 Tonight Atlanta Falcons at Detroit Lions, 6:00 p.m. Saturday Kansas City Chiefs at Chicago Bears, 1:00 p.m. NFL – Contract standoff between Bears, star LB Smith continues The contract standoff between the Chicago Bears and Roquan Smith continued Thursday with the star linebacker watching practice from the sideline and new coach Matt Eberflus saying he expects healthy players participating on the field. The Bears removed Smith from the physically unable to perform list on Wednesday a day after he went public with a trade request. The move by the team opened up the possibility of fines for missing practices. Eberflus declined to discuss what actions the team might take. But he made it clear he expects healthy players to practice. Smith has accused the Bears of using bad-faith tactics during negotiations for a contract extension. NFL – Chiefs’ Mahomes to buck NFL trend, play preseason opener Patrick Mahomes will start the Kansas City Chiefs’ preseason opener in Chicago on Saturday. That bucks a trend across the NFL of coaches sitting their starting quarterbacks for the first of their three exhibition games. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Thursday he would stick to his usual routine of having each of the four quarterbacks in camp play for a quarter of the preseason opener. And while he acknowledged the number of snaps could change based on the way the game is going, Reid thinks it’s important for everybody to get onto the field in some capacity. NFL – Police: Marshawn Lynch was asleep, car damaged before arrest Police in Las Vegas say former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch was asleep and smelled of alcohol when he was found in his damaged sports car this week and arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Lynch’s attorneys responded Thursday with a statement saying Lynch was in a parked car, not driving, and a DUI charge won’t stick. The arresting officer says police found markings suggesting Lynch’s black Shelby GT500 hit sidewalks before stopping in an industrial part of downtown Las Vegas. The 7:30 a.m. Tuesday arrest came after the Seattle Seahawks announced Monday that Lynch had been hired as a team broadcast special correspondent. In 12 NFL seasons, Lynch also played for the Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders. NCAAMBKB – Michigan State gives Tom Izzo new deal worth $6.2M per year Michigan State has signed basketball coach Tom Izzo to a new deal valued at $6.2 million per season. The school announced the deal Thursday, saying that the five-year rollover contract will need to be approved by its board next month. The 67-year-old Izzo was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. He won a national championship in 2000 and leads all active coaches with eight Final Four appearances. He led Michigan State to a 24th straight NCAA Tournament last season. He has won the Big Ten title 10 times in the regular season and six conference tournament championships. NBA – Russell’s No. 6 being retired across NBA, a 1st for league Bill Russell’s No. 6 jersey is being retired across the NBA, a first for the league. The league and the National Basketball Players Association announced Thursday that the number worn by the 11-time champion, civil rights activist and person good enough to be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach was being permanently retired by all 30 teams. Major League Baseball permanently retired No. 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson, who broke the big league’s color barrier. And the NHL retired Wayne Gretzky’s No. 99 in honor of that sport’s all-time scoring leader. NBA players who currently wear No. 6 — including the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James — may continue doing so. But the number cannot be issued again. NHL – Vegas goalie Robin Lehner to miss upcoming season Vegas Golden Knights goalie Robin Lehner will require hip surgery and is expected to miss the upcoming season. The 31-year-old Lehner will likely spend the entire 2022-23 season on long-term injured reserve. The team said no timeline for his recovery has been determined yet. Lehner started 44 games for the Golden Knights last season and finished 23-17-2. He has three years remaining on a contract that carries a $5 million annual cap hit. FIFA – FIFA moves World Cup start in Qatar up 1 day to Nov. 20 FIFA has formally moved the World Cup start up by one day to Nov. 20. It gives host nation Qatar an exclusive Sunday evening slot with a global audience. Qatar will now play Ecuador in Doha on Nov. 20 just 101 days after FIFA’s decision Thursday. It stretches the World Cup to 29 days from the 28 agreed seven years ago. The surprise late switch was signed off by a FIFA committee including president Gianni Infantino and leaders of the six continental soccer bodies. The plan was revealed Wednesday after several rounds of global ticket sales to fans since last year. USA Soccer – Equal pay deal for US women’s soccer approved by judge The proposed $24 million settlement between U.S. women soccer players and the sport’s American governing body was given preliminary approval by a federal judge. U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner granted the motion for approval filed by the players. He scheduled a Dec. 5 hearing for final approval. Players, including Megan Rapinoe, Becky Sauerbrunn and Alex Morgan, sued in 2016. The U.S. Soccer Federation agreed in April to pay $22 million to the players plus establish a $2 million fund to benefit the players in their post-soccer careers and charitable efforts. IIHF – US beats Swiss 7-1 to improve to 2-0 in world junior hockey Carter Mazur scored twice in the United States’ five-goal second period and the defending champion Americans beat Switzerland 7-1 on Thursday night to improve to 2-0 in the world junior hockey championship. Brock Faber, Landon Slaggert, Matthew Corondato, Thomas Bordeleau and Riley Duran also scored for the United States. Kaidan Mbereko made 23 saves, allowing only Joel Henry’s goal that tied it at 1 midway through the second. The United States will face Austria on Saturday and close Group B round-robin play against Sweden on Sunday. Earlier, Canada improved to 2-0 in Group A, with captain Mason McTavish scoring four goals and adding two assists in an 11-1 victory over Slovakia. Golf – PGA – Fowler, Day make early bid in Memphis to keep season going Rickie Fowler and Jason Day have reason to feel lucky to be even in the PGA Tour’s postseason. And now they want to keep going. Each shot a 65 in the opening round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship. That’s not enough for the lead, only to give them hope. The co-leaders are Si Woo Kim and J.J. Spaun at 62. But the opening event of the FedEx Cup playoffs is all about being in position to move on to the next round. Fowler and Day needed some of their best golf. They got off on the right foot. This week, as the NBA finals are underway, Laura talks with Dr. William Parham, the inaugural Director of the Mental Health and Wellness Program of the National Basketball Players Association. Dr. Parham is a Psychologist and Professor of Counseling at Loyola Marymount University, and together he and Laura explore many of the current, and historic, forces that impact the mental health of NBA players and other elite athletes. They cover everything from the legacy of systematic oppression and structural supremacy to professional sports' present day responsibility to treat athletes as multi-faceted individuals, often with complex lives, and - as Dr. Parham explains - invisible tattoos. Through their conversation they talk about not just how to obtain, but also how to maintain, one's mental health. While professional and collegiate sports have a long way to go in terms of dismantling the barriers for athletes who want to care for their whole selves, knowing that Dr. Parham is a part of that change is, indeed, inspiring. You all know us too well to know that we couldn't not track down a Saint Peter's alumni after the recent magical run. What better guest to have than the school's all-time leader in points per game average?! Rich Rinaldi is in the house and it is an HONOR! We of course love the recognition the current Saint Peter's team is getting recently, but we wanted to show some love to one of the staples of the school's history and program.Rich Rinaldi was a gifted scorer averaging 28.6 points per game by the time he was a senior at Saint Peter's. He went on to become the 43rd overall pick in the 1971 NBA Draft by the Baltimore Bullets where he played three years in the NBA & ABA and many more overseas. After his playing days he worked for the National Basketball Players Association, counseling players on the transition to post-basketball careers. He was extremely generous with his time, detailed with his answers, and truly one of our favorite guests we've had. We know you will all feel the same.
