Robert is a writer and Senior Lecturer in the Honours College at the University of Houston, and the Faculty Director of Creative Works. A novelist, short story writer and literary critic, Robert has got a lifelong love of Murdoch's fiction. He is currently working on next year's North American special edition of the Iris Murdoch Review which will be published in the Autumn of 2025. Daniel Read lectures at the University of Kingston and his monograph, Degrees of Evil in Iris Murdoch's Fiction and Philosophy, is due from Palgrave MacMillan in early 2025.

Monét is a distinguished writer and director who obtained her B.A. in English from Spelman College and an MFA in Film and Television with a concentration in writing and directing from New York University. She is a native of Maryland and her films are known for their thought-provoking questions about identity, society, race, and culture. Her commitment to showcasing underrepresented people in film, media, and television is evident in her works. She's received several awards, including the runner-up position in the First Time Female Filmmakers Contest with Women and Hollywood, the 2017 Horizon Award through Cassian Elwes, Christine Vachon, and Lynette Howell-Taylor at the Sundance Film Festival, and the Adrienne Shelly Foundation grant. She also participated in Film Independent's residency program Project Involve as a directing fellow. B. Monét is one of the winners of the #NewView Film Competition with Glamour and Girlgaze, which celebrates the voices of female filmmakers, and one of the filmmakers in the Tisch Other Showcase, which focuses on diverse artists whose voices are underrepresented in the television industry. Notably, B. Monét directed the award-winning short film Q.U.E.E.N., which premiered on Magic Johnson's channel ASPiRE and has been screened at over a dozen festivals, including Cannes Short Film Corner. She also directed a branded short film entitled “She's Revolutionary” on the #MeToo founder Tarana Burke for Levi's and Girlgaze, and has worked with several high-profile personalities such as Reese Witherspoon, Janet Jackson, Rosario Dawson, Chika, Rapsody, and Shangela for brands such as Crate and Barrel, Estee Lauder, Uber, OkayAfrica, OkayPlayer, and Hyundai. B. Copyright law, at its core, is about protection and balance. It's the legal framework that safeguards authors' and creators' rights while ensuring that the public can benefit from these works. As future lawyers, understanding this balance is key to navigating legal challenges in the creative world. Definition and Purpose of Copyright Law. Let's start with the basics. What is copyright? In legal terms, copyright is a right granted by law to the creators of original works of authorship. This includes literary, dramatic, musical, artistic works, and certain other intellectual creations. This right allows creators to control and derive financial benefit from their work, typically for the duration of their lifetime plus a period of years after their death. The purpose of copyright law is twofold. Firstly, it encourages creativity and the production of original works by ensuring creators can profit from their efforts. Secondly, it contributes to the cultural and educational enrichment of society by allowing these works to be accessible to the public after the copyright term. Legal Basis of Copyright. The legal foundation of copyright law in the United States is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 empowers Congress “To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.” This clause, known as the Copyright Clause, is the bedrock of all U.S. copyright legislation. Types of Works Protected. Copyright law protects a diverse range of works. This includes literary works like novels and poems; dramatic works including plays and screenplays; musical works; artistic works such as paintings, sculptures, and photographs; and certain types of technological works. However, the key criterion is originality – the work must originate from the author and possess a minimal degree of creativity. Formalities and Registration. Historically, copyright law required formalities like registration and use of the © symbol. However, since the Berne Convention Implementation Act of 1988, these are no longer mandatory for copyright protection. Nevertheless, registering a copyright offers significant advantages, including public record of ownership and eligibility for statutory damages and attorney's fees in infringement lawsuits. Rights Conferred by Copyright. Copyright grants several exclusive rights to the owner. These include the right to reproduce the work, distribute copies, perform the work publicly, display the work publicly, and make derivative works. These rights enable creators to control how their work is used and monetized, forming the basis for copyright infringement claims. Limitations and Exceptions. Now, let's talk about the limitations to copyright. One of the most important is the doctrine of fair use, which allows for limited use of copyrighted material without permission for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research. Determining fair use involves a complex analysis, a crucial aspect for any lawyer practicing in this field. Infringement and Remedies. Copyright infringement occurs when someone violates any of the exclusive rights granted to the copyright holder. The law provides various remedies for infringement, including injunctions to prevent further violations, and monetary damages to compensate for losses. In some cases, statutory damages can be awarded, which do not require proof of actual loss. Digital Issues and Recent Developments. In our digital age, copyright faces new challenges. Issues like digital rights management, online piracy, and the impact of social media are at the forefront. Economic Development and Higher Education Background -  One of the more interesting changes in the last two decades has been the intersection of economic development and higher education.   Universities are becoming important players in 21st-century  economic development. The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (representing 238 members) and the University Economic Development Association have helped higher education define its role in economic development and engagement with their local constituencies.   A framework was created to assist institutions and their partners in identifying economic development contributions and understanding how to connect to a larger vision.    Higher education institutions are adding “economic development” leadership positions   No longer primarily focused on areas of workforce development and innovation.   Colleges and universities often have large real estate holdings.   Even communities that do not have a local institution can partner with and benefit from regional entities.  These two organizations came up with a definition of economic development for higher ed that highlights three key areas: Talent – Cradle-to-Grave Human Capital and Talent Development   Innovation – Research, Creative Works, Problem-Solving, and Entrepreneurship   Place – Community-Connected Institutions and Stewardship for Vibrant Communities

Yongsun Paik is a Professor of International Business and Management, Director of the Center for International Business Education (CIBE), and the Center for Asian Business at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) in Los Angeles, California. Before he joined LMU in 1991, he served as a country economist at the Export-Import Bank of Korea and as a researcher at the Ministry of Finance between 1979 and 1984. Yongsun has a Ph.D. in International Business from University of Washington, Seattle, and M.A. in Latin American Studies from University of Texas, Austin. His primary research interests focus on international human resource management, business ethics, and Asian Pacific business studies. He has coauthored Global Business: Connecting Theory to Reality (Routledge, 2017), Managing a Global Workforce: Challenges and Opportunities in International Human Resource Management (Routledge, 2015), and coedited “Changing Face of Korean Management” (Routledge, 2009). Rose Moses is Ojibwe, from Henvey Inlet First Nation Band. She is a self-taught artist and has drawn on the inspiration of other First Nations artists. She up-cycles a lot of her materials when working on a project. We meet at her farm and she takes me on a walking tour of her seemingly endless work. From crazy quilts to doll making, beadwork, collages, painting, furniture rescue and restoration. She walks me through building after building and room after room filled with all of her projects. We talk about her deep passion for saving furniture from landfill and her support of youth and First Nations projects through sales of her art and furniture donations. We also have a very open and honest conversation about the work she does with high-school students. She shares mixed media collage art that are filled with symbolism of the pain and process faced by residential school survivors, her first-hand experience with her loss of culture and her own connection with her mother's experiences of residential school. It's a very moving and meaningful conversation that I was honoured to experience. Both Beading and Doll making has been part of the First Nations culture for a long time and it possesses great beauty, Rose considers working on them as sacred work. She has been making dolls for over 30 years and goes to schools to teach doll-making. Soprano and librettist Jennifer Cresswell has recently been heard as Der Trommler in Der Kaiser von Atlantis, Magda Sorel in The Consul, Hannah After in As One, as a soloist with the Toledo Symphony, and in concerts featuring the music of George Gershwin and Kurt Weill with tenor George Shirley. She is dedicated to singing in her native tongue and finding the beauty and humanity in otherwise unsympathetic characters. As a librettist, she has translated and created six opera reductions for school outreach tours, and has written one original opera libretto, Respectable Woman, with composer Kristi Fullerton. Jennifer is currently a doctoral student at the University of Michigan, where she has been named a Presidential Graduate Fellow by the Rackham Graduate School and an Elsie Choy Lee Scholar by the Center for the Education of Women.

In this episode, we feature the book Returning Home: Diné Creative Works from the Intermountain Indian School.  We speak with the authors Dr. Farina King, Dr. Michael P. Taylor, and Dr. James Swensen, who share their thoughts and experiences from working on the book and with the Diné (Navajo) people. Returning Home works to recover the lived experiences of Native American boarding school students through creative works, student oral histories, and scholarly collaboration. The book reveals a longing for cultural connection and demonstrates cultural resilience. Creative Works as a Medium for Healing. The hosts for this episode are Darlene Boyd and Phyllis Blees. The guest for this episode is Noelle McAlinden. The guest shares her very personal and challenging story of family tragedy which she was able to transform into healing and flourishing through her creative work. The creative work she used is a portrait called “Little Blue” that she shared with the audience. It expressed her feelings and moved her to a new place of healing and an even greater sense of purpose than she had before the tragedy. The guest discusses the different forms of creative expression that can serve as a medium for healing and flourishing such as art, poetry, motion, work, music, acting, improv, storytelling, teaching, meditation, drama, and leadership. The guest touches on the importance of finding a creative community who share one's preferred area of creative expression to avoid the dangers of isolating oneself that can come from tragedy or calamity (such as a pandemic like COVID 19).
