In the final episode of this series, we hear how it all shakes out. The trials end. The messy love square between the Donnellys and Reeds implodes. Kansas City Mafia boss Johnny Lazia meets his maker. The Donnelly Garment Company thrives, then dies. Through it all, Nell Donnelly Reed rises to untold prominence, but still manages to keep her secrets. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! In this episode, I was thrilled to welcome historian—and fellow Missourian—Kimberly Harper to the show. I am especially delighted by this episode because I get many requests to feature guests who have written history books while off of the tenure track or outside of academia, and Kim is a great example of that. I find guests for the show in a lot different ways – sometimes they are people I am a longtime fan of, other times I see books getting some press, or they pitch themselves for the show or other people suggest them. But I also scan catalogs of upcoming books to make sure I'm catching things that might otherwise get overlooked, and that's how I first learned about Kimberly Harper. I spotted her new book, Men of No Reputation: Robert Boatright, the Buckfoot Gang, and the Fleecing of Middle America in the University of Arkansas Press catalog, and got to read an early copy. I was so impressed by the research and storytelling that I knew I had to reach out right away, and lucky for us, Kim agreed to come on the show. Kimberly Harper earned a master's degree in history from the University of Arkansas, and she is an editor for the Missouri Historical Review. Her first book, White Man's Heaven: The Lynching and Expulsion of Blacks in the Southern Ozarks, 1894-1909, came out in 2010, and it received the Missouri Humanities Council's Distinguished Achievement in Literature award. Kim and I spoke about how some key mentors helped her find her way as a historian and writer, how she is learning to balance her day job, writing, and family life, and how you deal with sources for a book in which everyone is lying. Enjoy my conversation with Kimberly Harper.

Skidmore Missouri has a present-day population of 250 people which is really interesting and likely wouldn't be known so infamously if not for a murder that appears to have happened with most of the townspeople knowledge. We'll talk about that in the next episode. But let's find out about this town, through the butcher, baker and candlestick maker or hotel keeper, nurses and townsfolk. It is named after a surname of person - Marteny Skidmore who settled in the area around 1864 and then in 1880 and planned the town around the Nodaway Valley Railway depot and line. It appears from what I've discovered online is that it was mostly a farming community that had a railway to ship their produce to larger areas. The University of Missouri may sit – as we like to say - in the middle of the middle of the country, but the reach of our campus and community is global. Our students, faculty and staff represent six continents. And every year, we send more than 1,000 Tigers abroad to gain vital learning and scholarly experiences that connect us even more to the world. Here and abroad, the boundless ambition of our people drives our boundless potential. On this week’s Inside Mizzou podcast, Chancellor Cartwright talks with Jay Sexton, professor of history and the Kinder Endowed Chair in Constitutional Democracy, and Faramola Shonekan, a senior McNair Scholar and history major who completed the University of Oxford Global History course last year as a 2018 Kinder Institute scholar. They discuss the many other ways Mizzou’s global reach shapes our community’s education and impact. Read the full transcript here.
Some of Lewis and Clark's relatives were just famous and interesting."George Rogers Clark in any textbook on American history in the 19th century would have come across as one of the great heroes of the revolutionary war." said Dr. Robert Archibald.Today, we still remember the famed explorer William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame. But long forgotten is his older brother whose accomplishments are arguably just as significant.George Rogers Clark was the highest ranking American military officer in the Northwestern frontier during the revolutionary war. With the help of both frontiersmen and Native Americans Clark captured the British outposts of Vincennes, now in Indiana, and Kaskaskia, in Southern Illinois."Imagine if Clark and his little ragtag army had not managed to capture Vincennes and Kaskaskia. The United States would have had little claim to all that territory that now constitutes the bulk of the American Midwest." said Dr. Robert Archibald. The Missouri History museum now houses the largest collection of George Rogers Clark papers in America. This includes fascinating items like this letter from Patrick Henry, a list of prisoners captured at Vincennes and even this list of provisions Clark ordered for Kaskasia. This includes seven barrels of wine and brandy.Unfortunately George Rogers Clark was forced to resign from the military before the age of 30. He resigned after accusations he was drunk on duty.Eventually he went broke and had to rely on help from his famous brother to get by. He spent the last years of his life living alone in a log cabin along the Ohio river.

By the early 1930’s, Nell Donnelly had it all. Women everywhere loved Nell Donnelly’s stylish, well-made, and inexpensive dresses. But she didn’t just make great dresses. She made a great work environment, too. Unlike a lot of factory owners at the time, Nell paid well. She offered her employees medical care and a pension plan. She even paid for them to go to school. Nell’s hard work paid off. Fortune Magazine called her possibly the most successful businesswoman in America. She was rich, stylish and classy. But she was also a target. On December 16, 1931, Nell and her chauffeur, George, were kidnapped and driven to a nasty old cabin. The eventual trials of Nell’s kidnappers captured the nation’s attention and involved some of Kansas City’s most prominent citizens. Then Brandi frustrates the hell out of us with the story of Lisa Techel’s murder. When Lisa was discovered shot to death in her Iowa home, everyone knew exactly who’d done it — her neighbor. The man had a bad history with Lisa and her husband Seth. Police were sure they had their guy. But when they went to question him, he wasn’t quite the cold-blooded murderer they expected him to be. Hold on tight, folks. This one has so many twists and turns that it could be a two-hour episode of Dateline. Oh, wait. It is. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: The book, “James A. Reed: Legendary Lawyer; Marplot in the United States Senate,” by Michael Cronan The book, “Called to Courage: Four Women in Missouri History,” by Heather Roberson and Margot McMillen The book, “The Devil’s Tickets: A Vengeful Wife, a Fatal Hand, and a New American Age,” by Gary M. Pomerantz “Strange bedfellows,” KChistory.org “Nell Donnelly Reed, 102, Pioneer In Manufacture of Women’s Attire,” New York Times In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Before Dawn” Dateline ep. “Techel Trial: Opening Arguments Heard” by Stephanie Moore, whotv.com “Court upholds man’s conviction in slaying of pregnant wife” by Ryan J. In this episode, we talk about changing your path in life…At anytime, with the lovely Gretchen Stoll. Guest Bio: Gretchen Stoll was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. She was the middle child of three and the only daughter of a lawyer and Spanish teacher. From a very young age she always had an extraordinary feeling when she was on stage. The enjoyment from such activities gave her unbelievable courage and confidence. Being on stage was a completely different sensation in her life, as if her reality took place on the stage. This was the outlet that allowed her to express anything and everything of who she was as a person. It also gave her insight into humanity and feeling the humility in each character. Her dancing career started at age 4, which is what drew her to a life of performing. From here she studied tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, lyrical and contemporary. At age 8 she entertained crowds with her first musical, The Music Man. Music was always important. She knew the affect that it had on her and she watched how it affected others. Her voice lessons throughout high school and college influenced her to teach herself piano and guitar, which she continues to do. This was all taking place at the same time as the beginning of a successful modeling career. When she was 16 she modeled in New York City under Vision Models. Living in Manhattan opened her eyes to a greater future she could have. Among a few of the top clients that she modeled for include Oscar de la Renta, Harry Winston, B Michael, Bell South, Di Modolo, and Macy’s. She knew by taking the knowledge she had gained from music, dance and modeling she could have a successful acting career, her passion. The love she had for other various art forms reflected in her majors at the University of Missouri: History, Art History, and Archeology. Here she gained an appreciation for the world around her, which shows through in her performances and personal life today. Through the academia she continued to take voice lessons, theater classes, and dance classes. It was in college that she discovered her love of ballroom dancing: tango, waltz, foxtrot, Viennese waltz, east-coast swing, rumba, salsa, cha-cha, and samba. After graduating she drove to Los Angeles with no contacts and no knowledge of California. It was her first time to the Eureka state in August 2011. Since then she has been pursuing her acting and modeling career. She signed with her first agent in September 2011. From there she began her acting classes at Clay Banks International Studio. Her life has changed and progressed in many different fields in the past 4 years. Her recent return from Europe where she modeled for Stella Models between September and December 2013 was a great accomplishment she had always dreamed of and turned into a reality. She is currently working with Wunder Models and Bold Artist Management, taking acting classes at Jocelyn Jones Studio, and writing a series of comedic shorts. Humor is what she loves most. Naturally very comedic, making people laugh is such a gift and it inspires her to live a happy life. Gretchen’s hard-work, drive, positive attitude, and talent are sure to get noticed. This lovely and talented artist is sure to turn heads in the entertainment industry in no time. And she gives us a cool behind the scenes look at Jason and Grant’s visit with T.A.P.S. 10:26 Is there any truth to the legend? 13:40 So what about the reports of hauntings? Is it haunted? And who is haunting it? And what about the evidence from the Ghost Hunters episode? 14:53 Riverbend Paranormal Being a respectful landlord to the presence of both the physical and spiritual. (Not getting the answer I apparently was looking for, I kept pestering Meredith about activity in the building.) 15:56 I missed the cooler story. What’s the latest news from the Milton? 16:37 Templar Brewing Co is moving into the Milton. What does Ginger think? As an intuitive medium, does she sense a paranormal presence in the building? 17:28 Ginger is also the owner of Missouri History and Hauntings. Does she think there’s any truth to the Milton legend? 21:02 Schools hold lots of energy from decades of students coming and going, memories, experiences, and history. Is it that residual energy that people claim to feel and experience here? 22:51 Getting a brief tour of the building, meeting Buford, and stumbling into THE boiler room! 25:06 Leaving Maeva’s and feeling silly about focusing on the legend and the paranormal, when there is so much more to the Milton. And why is it that I sleep like a baby in “the most haunted” places? 26:44 If you have stories or have had paranormal experiences from the Milton Schoolhouse, please contact me! I’d love to hear about your experiences. 28:36 Another audio issue of Tim Prasil’s Spectral Edition! (Possessed Girl - Club House Ghost) 28:53 Catching up with Ginger Collins-Justus and talking about some upcoming events she’s planning. Be sure to listen to Ginger’s previous appearance on episode 23 of the podcast. 32:50 The Milton is SO much more than a place for paranerds to fantasize about! It’s a super cool community and a place for inspiration. Please visit the website for the Milton Schoolhouse! Visit the “news” link in the menu for a beautiful blog written by Meredith. It's Idea Festival time in Louisville, and that means cool people who do cool things descend on our city to talk about the things they're doing! We chatted with one of those folks, Juan Williams Chàvez, this week about his work, and what it means to do social activist through art. One of Chàvez's big projects, the Pruitt-Igoe Bee Sanctuary, takes place on land that was once home to one of the country's most notoriously awful housing developments. Built in the mid-1950s, the 33-building, high-rise complex fell into almost immediate disrepair, and was described in a Missouri History book as "something out of a Charles Dickens novel." It was eventually demolished in the mid 1970s. Today, thanks to Chàvez, it is home to a bee sanctuary, where members of the community learn about urban agriculture. The decision on how to use the land wasn't incidental. "Bees function as a community," Chàvez explains. "Pruitt-Igoe was designed for community. I wanted it to kind of go back to community." In our Juicy Fruit segment this week, we talk about the "angry black woman" stereotype that reared its head in a New York Times feature this week, pointed at television producer Shonda Rhimes. The backlash was righteous and overwhelming, and the Times ended up issuing an apology. We break down the stereotype and how it does and doesn't play out in pop culture. "And speaking of things that are hard for a lot of folks to understand," Jaison says, "it's Bisexual Awareness Week." We go dispell some of the most common misconceptions about our bi brothers and sisters.
