Once again, Prime Minister Mark Carney has convinced a Conservative to cross the floor and join his Liberal Party — the third MP to do so in just a few months. And it comes as Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre tries to manage the fallout from a caucus member's trip to Washington. The National Post's Stuart Thomson and the Globe and Mail's Shannon Proudfoot take a look at Poilievre's mounting challenges and how close the Liberals may be to a majority.Plus, the U.S Supreme Court ruled this week that Donald Trump exceeded his authority by imposing sweeping emergency tariffs on trading partners, but the president says he won't back down. Brian Clow, former deputy chief of staff to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, joins Catherine Cullen to discuss whether the ruling will help — or hurt — Canada.Next, the government announced its long-awaited defence industrial strategy this week, with ambitious goals to boost exports, create 125,000 jobs and award 70 per cent of defence contracts to Canadian companies. But will it mean Canadian troops get the equipment they need? The House visits a local Ottawa defence tech company for their take; CBC's senior defence writer Murray Brewster breaks down the government's plans; and Secretary of State for Defence Procurement Stephen Fuhr discusses the road ahead. And New Democrats are entering the final stretch of their federal leadership race as five contenders took the stage in B.C. Thursday for one last candidates' debate. Former NDP MPs Nathan Cullen and Matthew Green join The House to weigh in on their pitches, the tensions and the contrasting visions for a party hoping to build back after winning just seven seats in the last election. This episode features the voices of:Brian Clow, former deputy chief of staff to Prime Minister Justin TrudeauStuart Thomson, parliamentary bureau chief for the National PostShannon Proudfoot, feature writer for The Globe and MailMicah Grinstead, senior director of operations at CalianChris Pogue, president of defence and space at CalianMurray Brewster, CBC News' senior defence correspondentStephen Fuhr, secretary of state for defence procurementNathan Cullen, former NDP MPMatthew Green, former NDP MP

This week, Thomas sits down with one of our favorite frequent guests; journalist and co-host of the “What is Collective Healing?” podcast, Matthew Green, to explore the profound synergy between spiritual awakening, ethical living, and trauma healing, and how these pursuits converge on the journey of life. They discuss how the "social mirror" of community helps us integrate spiritual insights, why it's so important to meet pain with love, and why moral development requires us to get to the root causes of social issues instead of coming at problems from the top down. It's a fascinating conversation if you're interested in what it looks like to integrate our personal and collective shadows, and what paths are available for us to move toward collective awakening and healing.✨ Watch the video version of this episode on YouTube:

Why haven't journalists fully integrated the UAP story—despite years of sworn testimony before the U.S. Senate? In this episode, we explore the legitimacy of the UAP phenomenon, the possibility of government suppression, and what it would actually require for us to integrate this reality on an ontological level.Layman, Matthew and Jacob examine the evolution of journalism in the face of “high weirdness,” asking whether a new, para-institutional 'council' approach is needed to engage extra-dimensional phenomena. From Christianity's inherent strangeness to AI, disclosure, and the limits of traditional reporting, this conversation traces what may be a sea change in how we understand reality and information itself. If disclosure isn't enough, what is being asked of us? And what kind of journalism—or consciousness—must emerge for these phenomena to truly “land” in our awareness?Matthew Green is a journalist, collective healing facilitator, and author with over a decade reporting globally for major news outlets before moving into integrative cultural work. We know checks and balances between the branches of federal government is a hallmark of our republic.  But have you considered the checks and balances the Founders crafted into the design of Congress itself, with the House and Senate splitting legislative power?  Why did the founders build in checks to prevent too much power residing within one chamber of our bi-cameral legislature and how did they accomplish this objective?  To answer these questions and so many more, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Matthew Green as our special guest this week.  Dr. Green is a prolific author on American politics and has been a professor of politics at Catholic University since 2005.

Two of the country's largest wholesale markets are on the brink of closure. The City of London Corporation has decided to shut the historic meat market at Smithfield and the fish market at Billingsgate, bringing to an end centuries of food history. Sheila Dillon is given a tour of Smithfield market by the historian Matthew Green who describes how Smithfield features in the work of Charles Dickens and was once described as the "kitchen of the universe" by the writer Ned Ward in 1702.The programme hears from the Smithfield traders who work through the night butchering and selling meat to restaurants and shops across London, the South East of England and beyond. There has been considerable opposition to the closure of the markets. More than 37,000 people have signed a petition asking the City of London Corporation to keep the markets where they are including Alicia Weston who we meet at Ridley Road street market in East London. Here fishmongers are concerned about where they will source their supplies if Billingsgate closes. The City of London Corporation chairman Chris Hayward responds. Finally, the author of Hungry City Carolyn Steel and Professor Tim Lang from City University reflect on the importance of wholesale markets in strengthening food supply chains as well as their contribution to the social and cultural fabric of a place.Presented by Sheila Dillon Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Robin Markwell

And as I read Matthew Green's Aftershock: the Untold Story of Surviving Peace, I thought a lot about him and his family, as well as more widely about other military veterans affected by PTSD. I've really enjoyed my conversation with Manchester Portfolio GP Zalan Alam  today. It is such an important book. I'm not going to lie and say I really enjoyed it. I didn't. I found it an incredibly difficult read. But it is a very, very important book about a subject which we really are not talking enough about. And I really do think this is a book that everybody and anybody who's working anywhere in the health service should be picking upAftershock is a book about PTSD, it's a book about military veterans, about what we are doing and sadly not doing to support them. I recognise that a lot has happened in the 10 years since the book was published so perhaps things are better than they were then. I'm not sure and I don't think we can be complacent and I don't think we can think enough about this incredibly vulnerable group of patients. It's a deservedly emotional and tough read, but we do really need to be thinking about this a lot more and we really need to be doing better. If you want your practice to become a RCGP Veteran Friendly Practice find out more here https://elearning.rcgp.org.uk/course/view.php?id=803It may help to signpost patients to Veteran's Gateway https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/find-support-for-veterans-and-their-familiesZalan also recommends http://www.overcoming.co.uk

When the founder of the messaging and social media app Telegram, Pavel Durov, was arrested in France, it exposed something: many of Telegram's millions of users believe the app is much more secure than it actually is. Some of those people use the app for crime; others to communicate about sensitive political topics in war zones. Media outlets (including, we must admit, Endless Thread) have often described Telegram as an encrypted app, but that's not quite right. Telegram, and who knows who else, can access most of what's said and shared on the platform. There are crucial differences between apps like Telegram, and other services known for encryption, including WhatsApp and Signal, and many people using the apps don't understand the differences. Do we need to? Wired's Andy Greenberg, Natalia Krapiva at Access Now, and  Matthew Green, a professor at Johns Hopkins, say absolutely. This week, we look at the anarchist, googler, and billionaire moguls behind the tech that millions of people around the world use for basic communication. And we imagine what it looks like when an app actually protects your conversations from prying eyes? We also ask: why should you care, even if you think you have nothing to hide? Show notes: "What is Telegram and why was its CEO arrested in Paris?" (The Associated Press) "Is Telegram really an encrypted messaging app?" (A Few Thoughts on Cryptography Engineering) "Signal is more than encrypted messaging. Under Meredith Whittaker, it's out to prove surveillance capitalism wrong." (Wired) "Eugene from Ukraine."
