Full disclosure: This episode was recorded at 5 AM in my bed and on my phone so please excuse any audio issues that you don't normally hear. What started off as just a run of show notes turned into a full-blown episode so excuse my morning voice. Now to the meat and potatoes of this episode! The 'Sex and the City' reboot debuted on HBOMax recently and I binged the first two episodes. I have so many thoughts and feelings about the new cast, the Big changes, and the way they're helping destigmatize the conversation around mental health already! I'll be sharing my thoughts on those first two episodes as well as some Insecure episodes that helped make me comfortable enough to not only share my recent struggles with depression with loved ones but with y'all. But don't worry, we'll be ending the episode on a high note with some info for an upcoming trip I have planned to DC for Issa Rae's #HooraeTakesKC event! I'm sharing some history about the city I claim and love, talking about some of the Black-owned businesses I've been patronizing, discussing some shows I've been binging, and more! And to be 100% transparent, I end the episode talking about something else that's life-giving for me, my IUD! So much has happened these past few weeks and it seems like the phrase 'Black Lives Matter' is no longer seen as taboo. Companies and corporations everywhere are saying in and donating to the cause and Tavaria and I have so many thoughts and feelings about the sudden surge in participation in the movement. We also dive into the history of the upcoming holiday, Juneteenth and why it's so important to Black people in the South. I've also been binging documentaries and noticed a keen difference between the R. Kelly and Jeff Epstein one that I had to share with y'all this week. Finally, we wanted to end things on a lighter note because one of the ways we can keep sane during times of crisis is to laugh so we talked about the scam goddess that is B. Simone and we finished off the episode talking about 'Insecure'. I want to preface this and say that we recorded this episode on Sunday prior to the season finale of 'Insecure'. I watched it in shock with the rest of y'all and then had a full hour-long Facetime chat with 3 of my girls about not only the episode, but the entire season so please believe that a mini AAtJ episode about the show is coming soon! This week was heavy, like really heavy. Working from home made it easier because I was able to cry when I needed to and I didn't have to deal with people directly. Between the tears and the physical manifestation of dealing with all of this I'm tired. I'm tired of my brothers and sisters being MURDERED and their MURDERERS not being held accountable. I'm tired of the "allies" who channel Helen Keller when it's time to speak up and march along with us. I'm tired of the respectability politics and the "not all people" folks. I'm tired of breaking our backs doing the work we shouldn't be doing alone. WE CANNOT FIX A SYSTEM THAT WASN'T MADE FOR US. In case you couldn't tell I'll be speaking about Christian Cooper and George Floyd on today's episode. I'll be talking about the language of the unheard and how folks need to stop slicing and dicing MLK Jr and the bible to fit whatever BS docile narrative they want to shove down the throat of BIPOC today. So take a listen, get uncomfortable, do the research, and do your part by putting your money and actions where your mouth is and having that uncomfortable conversation with others in your life.

Bri and Jordan are no strangers to the show (or my life), and when Bri pitched this crossover/guest podcast of sorts Jordan and I immediately said hell yeah! (Five points if you know the video I'm referencing there). You guys know I'm all about trying to live my authentic best life, so it's always nice when I meet other people especially women who are doing the same thing. Both Jordan and Bri are lifestyle/motivational bloggers who I believe are killing it on their platforms. Jordan's blog is one that I check on a regular basis and she's now launched a podcast that I absolutely loved and even shared with y'all last week! Bri recently celebrated the one year anniversary of her blog and did so in a big way! We mentioned this on the show, but all three of us have had similar experiences in women not helping other women even though we are in very different industries. I know a lot of bloggers do quarterly and monthly recaps of things that they're loving, and I haven't done that in a while so this short episode is all about that. Feel free to hum the tune if you know it. Michael B(ae) Jordan and his Netflix series, iOS 13 and all the new goodies, Blue Snowball mics and the upcoming vote, THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS! Yeah, I know that doesn't rhyme by I never said that I was a poet. You know the drill, grab a mug of coffee or tea and tuck in for this short episode. Feel free to DM me (@lehautepaire or @andallthatjazie) or send me an email if you have any comments or want me to talk about any specific topics!

Episode 041 - Haute Takes, Pt. 4 - Taking up Space

Look who got a makeover! I was hit with the creative bug on Friday and decided to rebrand the podcast…ish. I still have the same logo, but I was long overdue for a new podcast graphic. I'd had the same simple one since 2017, and while that was great at the time I felt like it was time for you guys to see the face behind the voice. Especially for those of you who don't follow my blog. What do you think? You might have also noticed that the show's info has changed and I've removed Tavaria as the main host. There was no fallout or anything like that, she's still my favorite cousin, but between her incredibly busy schedule and the fact that I'm now more comfortable hopping on the mic by myself or with other guest hosts I figured it was time to make it official. She's still going to be a regular host on the show, she just won't be a main host anymore. Now! Back to this week's episode. SO MUCH happened last week that I wanted to talk about. Tracee Ellis Ross dropped a new hair product line for curly girls like her (specifically for the 3b to 4c hair types). H&M did a photoshoot centered around how kids look after-school and featured a darker-skinned model with 4c hair and while some folks were pissed, I loved it! She literally looked how so many of us have looked after school when we were younger. Then there was the anti-vaxxer protest in New York after children were removed from school once the grace period passed of a recent law prohibiting the students to be enrolled in a public school if they hadn't been vaccinated. I actually agree with the law, and respect the parents' right to protest, but where they had me messed up was when they started comparing this situation to the Civil Rights Movement of the '60s and even the Holocaust. This is another short episode, but it's full of tea so grab a mug and enjoy it! Oh! The podcast that I mentioned early in the episode is 'If I'm Being Honest' by Katie Crenshaw, and I HIGHLY recommend y'all check it out. Many people say that they're allies (of all disenfranchised groups), but Katie backs up her words. I love it and I think you will too!

I can sum up this episode in 4 words. Power, Hustlers, Privilege, and Trolls. It's another 'Haute Takes' episode so it's a short one, you might only need one mug of tea or coffee to get through it but you don’t want to miss it. Take a listen below, and if you or anyone you know is interested in taking me up on my offer and sharing the mic with me on a candid discussion about women's health please let me know! You can reach via email or slide in my DMs.

Episode 039 - This one time at bandcamp…

If you've followed me for a while then you know I'm a huge music buff, and not just a music buff but a band nerd. I've played the flute since I was about 11, marched for 6 years, was all-city and all-state, played in jazz bands as well as concert bands, and I was even the head drum major my senior year in high school! The one thing I didn’t do that I really wanted to do was join a core band, but they only march brass instruments and I played a woodwind. Band was always a big part of my life, so when I got the opportunity to cover this year's National Battle of the Band competition in Houston I pounced on it. I have a full blog post coming later this week on that, but I wanted to share some band memories with y'all and have two very special guests come on and share their band memories as well. My parents! They were truly by my side throughout all of those years, so I figured they'd be the perfect guests for this episode. Take a listen below and stroll down memory lane with me, and when you're finished with this episode do yourself a favor and check out The Score Podcast, especially if you're into music education and band stuff like this. One of the hosts is actually one of my former drum majors in high school and he's since directed a few bands, turned one high school's band program around and is just doing great things in his field. You can check them out on Instagram (@podthescore) or on their podcast's page.
