This week Ashley is back on the mic sharing a story from early adulthood when an unexpected message resonated in unexpected ways.
What are the symptoms that lead to the pain? How do we practice experiencing joy as a community when there is terrible tragedy that surrounds us?
A real and deep discussion about expressing one's self as an artist, maintaining authenticity in a time of censorship, losing friends, finding joy, the necessity of feeling and dealing with pain, the absurdity of authority and a lot more. Roaman sings us the first track off of his new album - Bless This Mess. The album is due out in April, 2024.Roaman is a light source. Use the code Kerry25 at seagullbook.com to get 25% off of Kerry's books. In this episode Rabbi Joe Charnes and Kerry dive deep on the first 8 verses of James. They discuss the relationship of trials and being built up so that we can become complete, or wholehearted. They look at the meanings of the words used in these four verses and how we can become more godly through these trials. They then wrestle with the heavy questions of whether or not you can truly find joy in the worst kind of evil in your life, and whether any of this can truly help you to become perfect in this life. They ask if James is right that joy can come from experiencing evil. We are grateful for our sponsor, Lisa Spice, and for our editor, BJ Muhlestein, and for Rich Nicholls, who composed and plays the music for the podcast.

When #BlackLivesMatter emerged in 2013, it animated the most consequential Black-led mobilization since the civil rights and Black power era. Today, the hashtag turned rallying cry is but one expression of a radical reorientation toward Black politics, protest, and political thought. To Build a Black Future: The Radical Politics of Joy, Pain, and Care (Princeton UP, 2023) examines the spirit and significance of this insurgency, offering a revelatory account of a new political culture--responsive to pain, suffused with joy, and premised on care--emerging from the centuries-long arc of Black rebellion, a tradition that traces back to the Black slave. Drawing on his own experiences as an activist and organizer, Christopher Paul Harris takes readers inside the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) to chart the propulsive trajectory of Black politics and thought from the Middle Passage to the present historical moment. Carefully attending to the social forces that produce Black struggle and the contradictions that arise within it, Harris illustrates how M4BL gives voice to an abolitionist praxis that bridges the past, present, and future, outlining a political project at once directed inward to the Black community while issuing an outward challenge to the world. Essential reading for the age of #BlackLivesMatter, this visionary and provocative book reveals how the radical politics of joy, pain, and care, in sharp contrast to liberal political thought, can build a Black future that transcends ideology and pushes the boundaries of our political imagination. We're in conversation with two of my dear friends Sarika Jain and Jezebel Paulino-McFadden who are telling their journeys of motherhood. As women in business, oftentimes it's hard to choose between your career and becoming a parent. Sarika and Jezebel talk to us about their process of embracing motherhood and the literal role of birthing the next generation of human beings. Socially, there is a blatant disregard for the value of moms, especially black and brown moms who are disproportionately impacted by maternal health. All of which leads to anguish, sickness, harm and death. “When I think of motherhood, I think ‘labor of love'. And that's something we as a society have to value. We cannot expect our economic system to value that, I think that we as individuals have to start waking up to that. To make love work, requires a labor of love.” In this episode, Sarika & Jezebel share their lessons learned in: Choosing motherhood over ambition of growing your career Grappling with your identity as a mom and partner while still staying true to your own passions and interests. Challenging gender norms and social expectations of motherhood The lack of support of basic needs for mothers within this country compared to other countries Join us for this candid conversation. What if the worst case scenario happens? What if our family contracts COVID-19? What if the lump is cancer? What if I lose my job? How do we walk by faith in the midst of life’s many “what if’s”? We believe the gospel offers us freedom from living with the “what if’s” ever before us. Sometimes, tragedy does strike. Our world may experience a pandemic. But God’s people respond, not in fear, but in faith. We look back to God’s past faithfulness, and we look forward to His future faithfulness. We are not “what if” people; we are “even if” people. Life is full of disappointments and unmet expectations. Dealing with them can be incredibly difficult. Sometimes, we can feel absolutely devastated by unmet expectations. But then we read God’s Word that tells us to “be content with what you have” (Heb. 13:5). How do we reconcile the two? How can we be content when life is disappointing and not how we had hoped it would be? God gives us the secret to contentment in His Word; He gives us the grace and means! Self-care is a trendy topic. If self-care is just taking intentional steps to cultivate your physical, mental, and emotional health, what’s wrong with it? This topic isn’t so black and white. God created us as finite beings, and the limits that He has ordained are for our good. Rest is a gift! However, true rest according to God’s Word is not the same as what our culture promotes under the label of “self-care”. We’ll talk about what it means to have a healthy, biblical view of self-care, and we’ll even offer practical tips to engage in true rest that will refresh your soul in the Lord. DISCLAIMER: In this episode, we mention the term “mental health.” This term has a broad range of usage, and we are not using it to refer to mental health in any clinical sense. This podcast episode is not intended to treat or diagnose any mental health conditions. If you have a clinical mental health condition, or think you might, we encourage you to see a licensed mental health professional and connect with your local pastor. This episode is not what it was originally planned to be. I was supposed to be back on the mic with Tavaria discussing the goings on of the world and our lives, but I felt like that episode needed to go on the back-burner for something a bit more deep. Yesterday marked the 16th anniversary of my mom's passing and while I feel like I'm in a good place as far as grieving goes now, it took some time for me to get there. This episode starts out a bit heavy with the "pain" segment, but then lightens up and throws me back to my adolescent years with the "joy" segment. I went to the Millennium Tour stop in Houston this past weekend and CUT UP! I'm talking about my shenanigans and more on this episode so grab a drink, take a seat and tune in!
#preachingthegospeltomyself // what does that mean? How do we do it? Why is it an important practice in our lives? We are going to start with sharing what the gospel exactly is -- we need to know the gospel in order to be able to communicate the gospel to ourselves and others. Only then can we apply the gospel to every aspect of our lives! We even share a lot of practical tips on how to do this -- it doesn’t have to be a long, drawn-out practice! Whatever you’re experiencing right now - tragedy, grief, loneliness, infertility, toddler tantrums, or just sticky floors -- the gospel applies.
