Happy Wednesday! The Penguins were back practicing and as always, there is lots to discuss. Hunter dives into a couple of expected roster cuts that were made on Wednesday before going into a couple of other player performances from Tuesday night. He first touches on Jeff Petry and why it wasn't the best debut for him. He looks at his struggles in the defensive zone, plus his $5K fine that he got from the NHL on Wednesday morning. Was it a play that he actually should've been fined for? After that, he goes a bit more positive with Radim Zohorna and why it feels like it's now or never for him at this point. The second segment then dives into some of the practice lines and how the Penguins are starting to split up the main roster from the WBS roster. Hunter looks at Josh Archibald and if it's right for him to clearly have a place in that group, even though some younger players have looked a bit better at camp (same with Zohorna in a way). He advocates for Drew O'Connor and Drake Caggiula to join that group since he likes their upside heading into the season. Finally, he breaks down the rest of the lines and how it's clear that Ty Smith is starting to become the favorite to win that No. 6 defenseman job. Oh no, the Penguins looked bad in a preseason game! The horror...

Tuesday night wasn't a kind one to the Pittsburgh Penguins as they fell to the Detroit Red Wings, 6-2. Thankfully though, it was just a preseason game. Hunter is joined by Doug Glattke of Penguins Twitter and of ForecheckingTv as they break down the positives and negatives of the performance. They first start with Brock McGinn as he scored a gorgeous goal to open the scoring. How important is it that he has a bounce-back season this year? What plagued him down the stretch last year? They also discuss the performances of Jason Zucker and Bryan Rust as they both continued to look stellar. Following that, they get into some of the negatives, starting with the special teams. What are the biggest issues with the power play right now? What needs to change so that it's more consistent this season? They then ask the same questions about the PK before touching on the D. They both loved Ty Smith's performance but are concerned about where Brian Dumoulin is right now. Could they have to trade for his replacement during the season if his play doesn't improve? Penguins hockey is back, baby (even though it's only preseason). Hunter starts the show off by recapping the team's first preseason game and who stood out the most to him. He looks at Jason Zucker's goal and how he was able to pull that off, while also hoping that the team gets more of that during the regular season. He also assesses Drew O'Connor's performance, as well as Sam Poulin's. Has Poulin been more noticeable as of late? What does that mean for his chances of making the team? How was Ty Smith in his Penguins debut? He also assesses him and then looks at how Casey DeSmith played in his first game since he got hurt in the playoffs. Following that, he recaps the second preseason game, and yeah, it went the way everyone expected. Was Danton Heinen the best player on the ice? How was Ryan Poehling's debut? Does Josh Archibald need to do a bit more to secure his spot on the team? He then breaks some news about a couple of roster cuts before giving his thoughts on the players that will be playing on Tuesday against the Detroit Red Wings. He goes into Jason Zucker and how he looks rejuvenated out there, plus how Drake Caggiula is making the most when he's played with Evgeni Malkin & Bryan Rust. He also looks at how it's likely that Rust starts the year with Malkin and Rakell starts with Crosby. Would that be the right move? Hunter looks at the data supporting both to see, while also looking at other combinations that the Penguins have used so far. After that, he dives into Ron Hextall's comments and how the Penguins could still make a trade over the next few weeks. while also giving an interesting comment on POJ. What about that 12th-forward spot competition? Do any goaltenders need to have good camps? Does it matter if Kasperi Kapanen has a good camp after what happened last season? Those are some of the questions that Hunter potentially answers in this segment before getting to the BOLD prediction segment. He gives five bold predictions for the 2022-2023 Pittsburgh Penguins and yes, some of them may make you spit your water out or have you fall out of your chair. Finally, Hunter reacts to the Locked On NHL Coaching power rankings and whether Mike Sullivan is in the right spot. After that, he gets into Rob Rossi's story on the RoboPenguin and thanks him for confirming the scoop (only a little :-), excellent reporting Rob!) He looks at what the jersey could look like and how many games the Penguins could wear it for this season before thinking about if the team will bring an original one back after this one is done. The Pittsburgh Penguins surprised everyone on Tuesday with an extension for Mike Sullivan! This new extension will start in a couple of years and will take him all the way until 2027 (if he's still here). Hunter goes into the extension and what it means for the present and future, plus shoots down this wild opinion that the Penguins shouldn't have made this move because "they've lost in the first round four straight years." He looks at the real reasons they've lost, and he always puts a winning formula forward, even if the team doesn't always win. He also looks at how much Sidney Crosby and the entire Penguins core respect him, which is something that hasn't always been the case in this era with other coaches. He then discusses how much confidence the front office and especially the new ownership has in him, based on their statements, and how he's one of a few coaches who probably has a "lifetime" contract with his respective team. Happy Thursday! Hunter starts the episode with another RoboPenguin update as Icetetics is reporting that the jersey is going to have a gold gradient. Is that what the Penguins should be doing? Hunter dives into that report and voices some displeasure over it since it would kinda ruin the logo in a way. He looks at how there have been too many plain gold jerseys as of late for the Penguins and how they need to change it up a little bit (just don't go for a blue jersey). After that update, he looks at the race for the 12th forward spot and who has the inside edge heading into training camp and the preseason. Is it Drew O'Connor? Is it Ryan Poehling? What about Drake Caggiula or Josh Archibald? He looks at who the best option is for the team in that spot and how the player can potentially contribute in more than one way. Also: Is it a given that DOC makes the team? Hunter goes into that as well before ending the show with some Jeff Carter talk. Yes, Hunter is back with a fresh new episode of Locked On Penguins. After a few days of taking care of some personal things, Hunter starts the show by addressing the Mike Vellucci extension and what it means for the team going forward. He looks at his work with the forwards over the last couple of years, while also looking at what needs to change with the PK going into next season. Hunter makes a case for a few select forwards to take some reps with the unit (one of them was really good at it when he was in Toronto) while also wanting Vellucci to not change the entire strategy in a playoff series. After that, he goes into Teddy Blueger's crazy night in Da Beauty League as he had four goals and seven points, while also getting into a...fight? What?! Yep, you read that right. He's had a great summer and there are some higher expectations for him this season. He then goes into the Paul Stastny signing and why it would've made a lot of sense for the Penguins if they had the money for it. Finally, he discusses the big elephant in the room...THE ROBOPENGUIN! He looks at what he could do with Petry even though he's a bit older, plus how the entire organization respects him as he's continued to grow since he got fired from Washington. He finishes the segment up with the power play discussion and why there are numerous reasons that it'll get back to where it normally is next season. After that, Hunter analyzes the Sean Monahan salary dump trade and shows the fans how prices are sky-high to move out bad contracts. What does this mean for the Penguins? He looks at Filip Forsberg as a comp since they're right around the same age (though Forsberg came into the league a bit quicker than Guentzel did. He gives his rough estimate of what the Penguins would likely pay him, and he tries to give a number that the Penguins could refuse (it would be very hard for them to do that). He also does point out the risk in those sorts of deals before pivoting to Johan Larsson leaving for Sweden. Hunter then moves into JFresh's Fan Survey and where Jake Guentzel landed in the top left wingers in the league. Was he a bit too low? If so, who would Hunter put him above? He then looks at the same list for the right-wingers and analyzes where Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell landed. How far up could they be next year if they have good years? The Pittsburgh Penguins made a great move on Wednesday when they decided to bring back Danton Heinen on a very cheap deal. Hunter gives his immediate reaction to the move and yes, it's all positive. He goes into how great Heinen was at 5v5 last year and how the Penguins are getting him on a bargain, plus looks at what line he'll likely start with to begin the season. He also again reminds the listeners that Hextall's work likely isn't done, considering that the team still has nine defensemen and because the team probably still wants another forward added. He gives an updated look at what the depth chart looks like and sings some praise as the forward group looks a bit better. Following that, Hunter gives his top 10 prospects in the system, starting with the top 5 in the second segment, and then the bottom five in the last segment. Congrats, you have made it to the offseason! Hunter is back with the first three episodes that will hit your airwaves this week. He starts the show off by going into Alex Nylander and how some fans have been asking him if he can potentially make the leap back to the NHL this season. Hunter goes into Nylander's numbers from this past season in the AHL but warns people as he also rode a pretty high shooting percentage. He then looks at what Nylander did the last time he was in the NHL and if that can be done in the Penguins' bottom six. After looking at the depth chart, he gives a percentage chance of Nylander making it or not before getting into a fun topic: Franchise Records! Hunter goes into some of the most significant records in franchise history and whether or not anyone can break them in the future. Can Sid pass Mario in goals and points? Who will hold the all-time record for most game-winning goals when it's all said and done? Will anyone match Kris Letang's records? He looks at how Kapanen has declined as a player since coming to Pittsburgh and how it's too much money for someone who basically can't play above the third line. What does he have to do to make this deal worth it? He also tries to answer that question the best he can, while also looking at how Nino Nierrdeiter only got $800K more than him in free agency. He looks at the numbers he put up this season and why he'd be a perfect fit with Malkin, plus it would end the #RussianWingerForGeno campaign that started so many years back. He also goes into his power play impact and how it would give the Penguins an unfair man-advantage. He looks at what he would likely cost from the Blues, especially if they're getting Matthew Tkachuk from the Flames. After that, Hunter looks at the pros and cons (mostly cons) of bringing back Phil Kessel after he was mentioned in Josh Yohe's mailbag on Wednesday morning. What do the underlyings look like? Could this be a true change of scenery? Hunter dives into all of those questions, especially the last one since he wasn't panning out in Montreal. He also looks at which players he would best with and how getting him carries very little risk for this season. Following that, Hunter dives into grading Ron Hextall's offseason so far and eats some of his words after criticizing him a few weeks ago. He gives his grade and the reasoning for it, while also again saying that more work needs to be done. He then gives what his final grade could be if he's able to fix the elephant in the room with two months to go. He looks at why the Penguins made the right call in that circumstance and wonders what a new deal would look like if the team does circle back. He also looks at why Brian Dumoulin may not be moved (according to Danny Shirey) and how management makes a pretty good point in the opposite direction. He looks at his defensive ability and how he clogs up the defensive zone, plus looks at what he's produced at throughout his career. He then looks at what line he'd fit best on before moving on to some updates on a potential defenseman trade. Hunter brings up that the Penguins HAVE TO get an impact forward in return, preferably a finisher since this team hasn't done much to replace some of the goals that were scored last year. Which defenseman would bring the most back in a trade? He looks at a few different trade scenarios and then makes a bold prediction about how many defensemen will be moved out. He also takes a shot at the people who will be miserable about this if they don't win before going into the Jan Rutta signing. Hunter looks at the data and analyzes his game to see what he's going to bring to the lineup next year. Which defenseman would he be best with? Which defenseman is going to be traded? After that, Hunter reviews Radim Zohorna's season and looks at how he put up some of the best underlying numbers that he's ever seen in such a short sample size. Is there a chance he keeps that up for a full season? Hunter looks at that, plus touches on how he's on a one-way deal this season. Is the team expecting him to make the jump for the entire season? What attributes would he bring to the bottom six? Finally, he ends the show with some long-awaited draft talk and gives the top two players on his board that could be available for the Penguins to take. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Can Ron Hextall get out of his passive ways and get stuff done for the Pittsburgh Penguins?

Tuesday is an action-packed episode of the Locked On Penguins podcast. Hunter goes all into Josh Yohe's story on what he's hearing about the Penguins heading into free agency and the draft and it's safe to say a lot of it is bad. He starts with the Evgeni Malkin rumors as more smoke is growing about how he won't be back with the team. Are Malkin's contract demands too high? Why is Hextall being stingy with him? That discussion then goes into another one about how Hextall may not be cut out for this job, considering how passive he was in Philadelphia. That won't fly here, especially if one or both of the core members of the team walk. He looks at how Hextall isn't too keen on spending money to replace either Malkin or Letang and why that would quickly backfire on him. Hunter also discusses the latest on Kris Letang and while it's more of a positive update, it's still not where it needs to be yet. Hunter also gets into the Pettersson vs Dumoulin debate and why the Penguins look to be taking the wrong side of it, plus gets to the latest on JT Miller and Vincent Trocheck. The NHL season is over and that means every team is in offseason mode. Hunter starts the show off by getting to a couple of listener silly season trade proposals and if he'd entertain these offers. One of them involves Kirby Dach, while another involves Brian Dumoulin. Hunter analyzes both of them and looks at who would be getting the better end of each deal. Do these hypothetical trades make sense for the Penguins? Do they also address other needs, or do they open up more? After that, Hunter reviews Drew O'Connor's season and how he saw a big growth in him from last year to this year. Is there a spot for him on this team next year? Can he provide even more offense than he did this past season? Hunter also looks at the main things that changed in Drew's game and how he has the ability to change them even more heading into next season. Finally, Hunter ends the show by congratulating the Colorado Avalanche on winning the Stanley Cup, while also giving his thoughts on Jack Johnson and the Crosby/MacKinnon bromance. It's somehow almost the final week of June and that means the NHL Draft and free agency are just around the corner. Before Hunter gets to some free agency stuff, he starts the show off by touching on a couple of promotions that the Penguins announced on Monday. One is a long-time player in the organization getting a pretty prominent role, while the other is taking Andy Saucier's role from the last few years. He gives his thoughts on those moves and how much could change over the next few seasons (especially in Saucier's old job) before getting to Mark Friedman's season review? How was his first real season of action? Could he provide the team with more value next season? Is he able to play higher up in the lineup if he's not the No. 7? After that, Hunter touches on an option that fans aren't thinking about enough when it comes to the second-line center spot if Malkin doesn't come back. Hint: Part of it involves signing a premier winger. Finally, Hunter ends the show with a little Jeff Prety rumor and whether it's worth it for the Penguins to trade for him if Kris Letang walks. Happy Thursday! We move closer to the start of July and that means free agency is upon us. Before Hunter gets into a potential free-agent target, he reviews Mike Matheson's season as he's now about done with all of the starters' season reviews. He goes into the numbers and how Matheson set career-highs in basically everyone, while also pointing out some career-highs with his counting stats too. Hunter then looks at how getting deployed right has played a big role in Matheson's turnaround for his career and how he also plays with the perfect partner in Chad Ruhwedel. What would the overall grade be? Can he get even better next season? After he answers those questions, he gets into a potential Penguins UFA target if Evan Rodrigues doesn't come back. He lists the pros and cons of getting Max Domi and what a new contract will look like before discussing the Stanley Cup FInal. All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins. After a small vacation, Hunter is back with a fresh episode on the Pittsburgh Penguins and as always, there's something to talk about. He starts the show with the latest Penguins rumors after Elliotte Friedman went on the Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday and touched on the latest with Letang, Malkin, and even Fleury. Is there a chance that Fleury makes a return? Hunter looks at that and brings up the only way in which that would work. He then gets to the latest with Malkin, which doesn't sound good. If a deal can't be reached, who will replace him? How much money will the team have? Is it worth it to do 3 X $7.5-$8M per for? Is it looking more likely for Letang? After that, Hunter gives his NHL Awards Ballot and how more writers need to watch the league as a whole and then evaluates Chad Ruhwedel's special season. Happy Friday! Hunter continues the season grades/reviews for this episode by touching on Marcus Pettersson's season. Was this one of his best seasons to date? How did his numbers stack up to some of the other defensemen? Hunter also looks at if his offense can break through next season, especially after seeing a tease of what he could do during the late stages of this past season. Finally, could he be used as trade bait? Is his contract a problem? Hunter dives into those questions before getting to Teena Murray being named the VP of Integrated Performance. What does this mean going forward? Could she help figure out why the Penguins are always one of the league's most injured teams? He also gets into a couple of other topics surrounding that hire, plus ends the show with John Tortorella going to Philly. He looks at how the Pens-Flyers rivalry can get back on track and why it's gone down a lot in recent years. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Looking at John Marino's season, plus could the Penguins go after a familiar face in free agency?

The season reviews continue in this episode as Hunter gets to John Marino. There's already been a lot of John Marino talk during the offseason, but Hunter now fully fives into the numbers from him this year and also gives his take on what his eye test tells him about Marino. Will he ever get better offensively? Is there more than one way to unlock that part of his game? Hunter then looks at his defensive impacts from this season and why they were actually up from a season ago. Is it due to playing with Pettersson more than Matheson? Just how good is that pairing together? Finally, Hunter looks at what the Penguins should do with Marino during the offseason. What could they get back in a trade for him? Should he be used as trade bait? Would it be the right call to bring him back? After that, Hunter does a small segment on Jack Johnson after Josh Yohe wrote an article about him for The Athletic on Thursday. He dives into the article and looks at new info that came out about his signing and why it makes GMJR look even worse. He also complains about how so many people in the fanbase were wrongly accused of not being fair to the player after he was signed while also knowing that he's likely a great human. Finally, Hunter ends the show with a potential bottom 6 UFA target that could be a real possibility this summer. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Oh yes, we are talking about the Penguins core on this episode of Locked On Penguins. Hunter starts the show out by blasting the people who just want to make change for the sake of it (and there are a lot of those people out there). He defends the core and asks these people why they're using them as the scapegoats when they're not even close to the reason why the team hasn't won a playoff series in four years. He reviews those series and gives his input on why the team really lost while debunking some fan theories. He also begs that portion f the fanbase to come up with actual solutions to them leaving without just going onto NHL 22. After that, Hunter reviews Brian Dumoulin's season. Was it as bad as people made it out to be? What does he need to work on heading into next year? He then looks at what the Penguins could get in a trade for him and whether it's the right call to move on from him given his age and his cap hit. We finally have some traction on the Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin contracts! Hunter starts the show by getting into the update on Letang and why it's GREAT to see that the organization sees him as their top priority right now. He goes into why the very loud but vocal minority of fans who dislike him are wrong and vows for those people to reach out about an actual plan of action if Letang isn't brought back. Before getting to the latest on Evgeni Malkin, he dives into the numbers again and why there's basically nobody on the market that can do what he does. What is that one looking like? Is he the second-biggest priority for the team? Is it right of the team to see him as the 2nd priority behind Letang? He then gets into the rest of the updates in Rob Rossi's story, including one on a potential assistant general manager joining the front office. He looks at why the team needs to go outside the organization for this one to bring in some potential fresh ideas, especially as a new ownership group took over. Hunter also shares an update on Andy Saucier (a positive one) going into next season before ending the show previewing the Stanley Cup Final. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Everybody's working for the weekend, right? Hunter starts the show with some Penguins front office news as Kevin Acklin is promoted to David Morehouse's former position. He discusses what that means for the short and long-term of the franchise, plus how he and Brian Burke look to be running the show for the Fenway Sports Group moving forward. After that, Hunter continues the season reviews with Casey DeSmith. Was it a tale of two seasons for him? Hunter looks at how he started and then how he finished as his season came to a close in the worst possible way. He then discusses the pros and cons of bringing him back next season and if the team should look to find someone who's more reliable and more steady. IF the Penguins do bring him back though, what would the AAV look like? Hunter gives his best guess before looking at another potential trade target that would make the Penguins: A) Younger and B) faster. He's a player that's had some struggles with the Blackhawks, but also someone who hasn't entered his peak years yet and is an RFA, similar to Kasperi Kapanen.
