The second episode of Friday is finally here! Hunter is joined by Jesse Marshall to touch on all things Pittsburgh Penguins and they first start with the GM search. Who are Jesse's top options to replace Ron Hextall? Is he high on Kyle Dubas while others are not? What kind of GM does Jesse want running the team moving forward? The two also discuss whether a woman could be joining the front office as the time is almost here for a woman to be the first full-time general manager in NHL history. After that, the two analyze what the Penguins need to do this offseason to be a playoff team again next season. What's at the top of Jesse's list? Does he think the Penguins need to start over in goal? Is buying out Mikael Granlund pretty easy? What would he do about Jeff Petry? He tries to answer all of those questions before the show ends with the two discussing the Stanley Cup Playoffs so far and which series have caught their attention. It's Day Two of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the Pittsburgh Penguins are still sadly not in it. Sad! Hunter starts the show by going over a few Penguins-centric items from Elliotte Friedman's 32 Thoughts on Monday. He discusses how the Penguins are continuing to discuss building out their analytics department and who they could get from other teams that Elliotte mentions. He also looks at a funny but sad ROn Hextall story that Elliotte wrote about and why the Penguins' front office will need to be more in sync for next season and years to come. What about those JT Miller talks? Hunter provides an update on those courtesy of Friedman and why Hextall actually got it right when it comes to not giving up what Vancouver wanted. Hunter then gives his ideal contract for Jason Zucker before analyzing what the top priorities for this team should be over the next several months. Do they need to totally restart at goalie? Does Kris Letang need a new partner for next season? Hunter also analyzes what the Penguins should do with Mikael Granlund before discussing the bottom six as a whole and why it needs to be revamped. What kinds of players should new management target for those roles? All of that, plus how awesome Monday night was is on this episode of Locked On Penguins. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Following the firings of General Manager Ron Hextall and President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke, the Penguins fandom is out in reckless speculation mode as Fenway Sports Group navigates these waters for the first time. Eric Tulsky? Sam Ventura? Who will be the Pittsburgh Penguins' next general manager? In addition to these front-office questions, we're discussing first-round draft picks the Penguins could select in June's NHL Draft, the likelihood of Jason Zucker returning to Pittsburgh, a potential buyout of Mikael Granlund's contract, and surprisingly, even a Hooks Orpik mention! Steelers insider Mark Kaboly from The Athletic joined the show. Mark does not expect the Steelers to trade up in the 1st round of the draft unless it's only a few picks ahead. Mark thinks the talks with the Bears are nothing more than the Steelers just doing due diligence on the teams ahead of them. He said it's a pretty murky pre-draft process and the Steelers can go in a lot of different directions. Mark said Bud Dupree probably has a better opportunity at playing time in Atlanta and that's why he's not coming back. Mark believes corner is definitely a top priority in the draft, up there with offensive line. He said they better have a long list of guys they are in love with at 17th overall. Mark thinks DeMarvin Leal could be another option off the edge in depth. Mark thinks the sweet spot for wide receiver in the draft is probably the second day in rounds two or three. The final few minutes with Mark were very entertaining.  Prospect(s) of the Day – A pair of Tennessee wide receivers are in town that the Steelers could have their eyes on. Tonight the Nashville Predators face Martin Necas, Sebastion Aho, and the Carolina Hurricanes in a game that will need the very best performance from Juuse Saros, Tommy Novak, and the entire Predators defense. We preview this matchup including our keys to the game. Then we check in on Mattias Ekholm, Tanner Jeannot, Nino Niederreiter, and Mikael Granlund - four players the Predators traded away at the deadline. We look at how they are performing with their new teams and what their potential postseasons may look like. With Calgary's win last night over the Winnipeg Jets, the Nashville Predators small hope to sneak into a wildcard spot stays alive. Tonight the Preds will need to steal a win over the 50-18-9 Carolina Hurricanes - no easy feat. We discuss what had to happen for Nashville to win when the teams faced off in January and tell you which players will need to bring their "A" games tonight to Bridgestone Arena. We also take a look at some of those Preds we lost at the trade deadline. While it may still be too early to say which teams won the big trades this season, we check in on Tanner Jeannot to see if the Tampa Bay Lightning may have buyer's remorse. While Nino Niederreiter's production has remained about the same with his new Jets team, we explain why his value may be higher there than with the Preds. We have a frank conversation about the "Ekholm Effect" in Edmonton and ask ourselves what in the world is happening with Mikael Granlund in Pittsburgh? Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

How...how is that the kind of performance that the Pittsburgh Penguins put out with everything on the line? Hunter starts the show trying his best to answer that question as the Penguins no-showed one of their most important games of the season on Tuesday night. They were done for at the drop of the puck as they looked a step slow. Right out of the gate, that was all it took. He discusses how the Devils' speed was giving them fits and why they made poor decisions with the puck whenever they got it. You simply cannot play like that when you're in a playoff race, especially when you have a game in hand on a team in front of you in the standings. After that, Hunter looks at how Hextall's fingerprints continue to be all over this roster with how Mikael Granlund and especially Jeff Petry looked. He analyzes how Petry played some atrocious defense throughout the game and why he made a terrible pinch that led to Dawson Mercer's first goal of the game. He then still wonders what Hextall saw in Granlund as he struggled at both ends of the ice and po0nders at how good this team could be if it actually had depth since the Penguins now have SIX different 20-goal scorers this season. Finally, Hunter looks ahead to the final four games for the Penguins, Islanders, and Panthers, and argues that every game now is a must-win, especially with their schedules. It was a mixed weekend for the Pittsburgh Penguins but in the end, they ended it still in a playoff spot. Hunter starts the show by discussing Kris Letang's legacy and how it was never certain that he would get to 1,000 games. He also discusses his favorite moments that Letang has been a part of in franchise history and why he will go down as the best defenseman in franchise history. He even makes an easy case of why Letang belongs in the Hockey Hall of Fame when it's all said and done due to how underrated he's been throughout his career. After that, Hunter analyzes how the Penguins took down the Flyers and why that was a must-win with everything at stake. He praises Rickard Rakell and Bryan Rust for getting the team going after a slow start, plus how Casey DeSmith turned in one of his finest starts of the season when they needed it most. He even praises Mikael Granlund for making a neat play when the game got close late in the third period, which sprung Ryan Poehling for the putaway goal. After that, he quickly discusses the fallout of the Bruins loss and why the Penguins would be in even better shape had they just gotten a point out of that game. He looks at where it all went wrong and ponders the thought of some changes to the assistant coaches if the special teams continue to be this bad. The Pittsburgh Penguins have another big one on tap on Thursday against the Nashville Predators and Hunter starts the show by previewing that matchup. He discusses how the Predators are severely banged up going into this game and why the Penguins can't afford to leave points off the table against a team that doesn't have any of their top forwards playing. He gives a few keys for the Penguins to bounce back before discussing Mikael Granlund and why he's kinda just...been there through his first 13 games as a Penguin. He analyzes why he isn't a good fit for the Penguins after passing on numerous prime scoring chances on Tuesday night and why he needs to be shooting a lot more. He also looks at why the criticism shouldn't be directed at him but should be at the GM for adding a pass-first player to a team that has very few finishers. Finally, Hunter discusses what the Penguins should do in goal for the game against the Predators, plus why their top priority should be trying to get a very good goaltender at the end of this season, especially if they don't trust Jarry. The Nashville Predators travel to PPG Paints Arena to take on Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight. Both the Pens and the Preds need to finish strong to secure a wildcard spot into the playoffs. We preview tonight's game and take a long look at former Predator Mikael Granlund's time with the Pens since being traded by David Poile at the deadline. It seemed unlikely that Predators fans would be having conversations about a wildcard race to the playoffs, but somehow young players like Tommy Novak, Luke Evangelista, and Cody Glass and the few remaining healthy veterans Juuse Saros, Colton Sissons, and Ryan McDonagh have carried a revamped Predators roster into the conversation once more. Tonight this ragtag group faces a Penguins team that currently holds a wildcard spot but is still looking over their shoulder as the season winds down. Nick and Ann share their keys to a possible Predators win and what seems vaguely familiar about where the Penguins team is in the big picture. Another one bites the bust. Hunter is here to recap Monday's terrible 2-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators and yes, the Pittsburgh Penguins let another one slip away. Hunter discusses why this one was very similar to last week's loss against the Montreal Canadiens (minus Jarry's struggles) and why these types of losses keep happening. He credits Dylan Ferguson for the win but also goes after the Penguins for not generating enough good looks from the slot/high-danger area. In other words, the Penguins didn't make him work nearly enough as they should have. After that, Hunter brings up the repeated topic of Brian Dumoulin and why Mike Sullivan's job might be tied to this. He breaks down Dumoulin's role for another goal against as he was puck-watching the entire time and didn't come close to making a play on Batherson. Why does he continually get on the ice in these situations? Hunter tries his best to answer it before moving on to Tristan Jarry's performance and why he stepped up when he needed to for this team to have a chance. He then analyzes Mikael Granlund's game and why he hasn't been a good fit since he was acquired at the deadline, plus ponders whether or not this loss is the dagger because of the upcoming schedule. It's a HUGE game day on Thursday as the Pittsburgh Penguins will play host to the New York Islanders. Hunter first touches on the practice lines from Wednesday and why Alex Nylander should continue getting a run in the lineup to see what he has. It certainly beats trotting out Jeff Carter every game even though all he does is take faceoffs. Where should Nylander slot in? Is he good enough to be in the top six? Hunter ponders those questions before he shouts out Mike Sullivan for changing up the defensive pairings...at least a little bit. He likes seeing Dumoulin off the top pair and predicts whether he will work with Jeff Petry. He also likes what he's seen from Pettersson and Letang before he gets a bit more nervous thinking about Kulikov and Rutta. Are both of them weak links on defense? Should the third pair be Joseph-Ruhwedel? Hunter analyzes that before previewing the game against the Islanders. How can the Penguins finally beat this team? What do they need to improve on? How have the Islanders changed their identity in recent weeks? Hunter answers all of those questions before ending the show with some news about PPG Paints Arena and a fascinating comment from Brian Burke on Mikael Granlund. Plus, are the Nashville Predators actually in a rebuild? We put David Poile's response to that question, and his reason behind the timing of the deadline moves, under the microscope. Poni gave Ron Hextall a D for his work ahead of the trade deadline and said the Nick Bonino trade and luckily dumping the Kasperi Kapanen contract is the only reason it wasn't a failing grade. And an NFL team put the franchise on a running back that had a big season. If the Steelers had to make the same decision in a few years with Najee Harris, would you do it? Poni referenced everything that happened with Le'Veon Bell.  Penguins insider and historian Bob Grove joined the show. Bob believes the Penguins improved because they got rid of some dead weight and added guys that could work. Bob was all in for JT Miller, but wasn't sure how the Penguins would've worked that out. Bob highlighted the year Jason Zucker has had and that the Penguins will need to find a way to re-sign him. Bob said Jeff Carter is still getting too much ice time and he would toss him out on the wing with Nick Bonino back in the fold. He said Ron Hextall made mistakes with the Carter and Kasperi Kapanen contracts that “ruined the whole season.” Bob isn't sure if Mikael Granlund will be the player they are looking for, especially on the defensive side, but he loves what Bonino can offer there. Bob commented on the Dmitry Kulikov acquisition and described it simply as a way to dump the Brock McGinn salary as he went back to Anaheim in the deal. Bob expects the Pens to make the playoffs, but doesn't like their chances against anyone ahead of them, besides the Lightning. He said to still keep your eyes on the Sabres who could make a late push to the Pens' playoff hopes.  Joey Porter Jr. ran an unofficial 4.47 40-yard dash at the combine. Will he make the Steelers believe he is the perfect package? Poni is praying the Steelers don't trade up to take Porter. And Poni wants the Steelers to draft Jack Campbell in the 2nd round after he put together a phenomenal combine.

What a win for the black and gold! Hunter is in awe of how this team played given everything that has gone on recently and he starts the show off by going into Drew O'Connor's overall game. He looks at why he should be here to stay for the rest of the year as he is the perfect fourth-liner for this team. He also compares his goal tonight to one of the most important goals in franchise history that happened during the 2009 one since they looked very, very similar. He also looks at how Jason Zucker continues to have one of the best seasons of his career as he's been their most consistent winger. Should he get re-signed? Hunter has some trouble with that question but that's also kinda for another time. After that, Hunter goes into how the leadership group and Mike Sullivan have done a great job with this team this week based on so many changes. He looks at how hard they've played for each other and why the bond this team has looked to be insanely special. Finally, he ends the show by complimenting Mikael Granlund for his debut and how he made Jeff Carter turn back into his old self...for at least a night. He analyzes his work on the PK, plus how he looked dangerous on offense at times before analyzing Jeff Petry's performance. He then ends the show with a quick trade deadline primer as he makes his prediction for Friday. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Nashville Predators defeated the San Jose Sharks (sans Timo Meier) as Nino Niederreiter and Mikael Granlund recorded two goals a piece. With Filip Forsberg and Ryan Johansen out with injuries, the Predators saw players like Tommy Novak, Matt Duchene, and Phil Tomasino step up in the 6-2 win. But was this an overall performance the Nashville Predators could win a playoff game with? Head coach John Hynes put together fresh line combinations last night and the creativity seemed to play off. On today's Locked On Predators, Nick and Ann break down the win over the Sharks including our "one word" to describe the game. We'll tell you why we think a fresh forward look helped Nashville and how this game could be a confidence boost for the Predators as they chase a wildcard spot. It wasn't all good news - last night Juuso Pärssinen left the game with an injury. We debate what might happen in the lineup if Pärssinen isn't able to play Sunday against the Arizona Coyotes. Finally, we end the week with our latest thoughts on David Poile's potential moves before next week's trade deadline. We'll tell you which of this week's happenings have us changing our minds a bit on what may come next for the Predators before March 3. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…
