Cassie Willnauer and Hailey Rausch
This week in fatphobia we're talking about Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos who've recently discussed how they keep the spark alive while filming in different locations. There's some fatphobic undertones that we discuss. Personally, Cassie is a big fan of Kelly Ripa, but it's important to recognize problematic patterns even when people we like are perpetuating them. Our listener question is from a woman in a relationship with a woman this week and it's about how to handle differing sexual desires regarding length of time spent and the activity menu. Then we have wins of the week where Cassie talks about her love affair with America's government teacher, Sharon McMahon (@SharonSaysSo). Sharon recently discussed banned books and used examples of porn without backing down from her stance that censorship is bad. We encourage anyone who lives in the US to pay attention to what's going on with local public libraries and school districts in your area! This week in fatphobia we're talking about Gwyneth Paltrow's terrible podcast interview with Dr. Will Cole. We also chat briefly about our childhood favorite, Gilmore Girls and the appalling amount of fatphobia in it. We're skipping a listener question this week because I'm still exhausted from last week's question. This week in fatphobia we're talking about The Blue Zone Diet. What is a “Blue Zone” and why is boiling down a way of eating as a path towards health problematic? We got on an excellent tangent about Christianity, capitalism, and other societal structures which work together to keep us from communal living. We're answering a listener question about desire discrepancy between a cis/het male partner and a cis/her female partner and breaking down the mythology around men having inherently high sex drives. This week in fatphobia we're talking about the new American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines on treating children in larger bodies. As a little pallette cleanser we're offering a review of That 90's Show. We talk about how they handle sexuality and fat characters. We're not having a listener question this week since we have so much to go through with the AAP guidelines. Then we have wins of the week! This week in fatphobia we're talking about an article from the New York Post titled Bye Bye Booty: Heroin chic is back. It's bad enough for a fashion trend to be named after a drug, but to boil bodies down to trends as though we should be treating our bodies as accessories is just.. Gross and dangerous. Our listener question this week is from a cis/het couple who's feeling disconnected after years of a intense work hours which have recently shifted and how that's impacting their sex life currently. This week in fatphobia we've gotta talk about Taylor Swift. She had some pretty blatant fatphobia in her video released for the song Anti Hero. We talk about how she's changed the video to remove the most blatant imagery, and discuss whether we think that was enough to address the mistake. Our listener question this week is from a cis-female woman about her cis-male partner. It's something we found on a Facebook page that we felt really allowed us to have a nuanced discussion around porn. We've tried to talk about porn on the pod in the past and that tends to be a hot-button issue for folks, so we're hoping this brings in more layers to the ongoing conversation. Then we have wins of the week! Hailey's win this week is that she cleaned the dust off all of the fans in her house & programmed her car to open her garage! Cassie's win this week is about cleaning too! Her house is clean and she's dedicated to keeping it clean and has been making a solid effort daily to keep clutter from piling up. This week in fatphobia we're talking about Kanye West's recent interview with Tucker Carlson. In the interview he uses Lizzo's body/weight to criticize the cultural move towards body & fat acceptance. Of course, he does this Ye style by getting really conspiracy theorist with it. We break down the phrasing he uses and the claims he makes highlighting the misogyny and fatphobia within them. Our listener question this week is from a cis-female woman about her partner shaming her for needing/wanting to use a vibrator. We discuss the cultural expectations around orgasms and who gets to have them. We give some pointers for how this conversation could be opened up for discussion. Then we have wins of the week! This week in fatphobia we're talking about Bryce Dallas Howard's role in the new Jurassic World movie and the interview she gave where she discussed being asked to lose weight for her role in this third installment of the franchise. DeWanda Wise also discussed her body being criticized for being too muscular and it just goes to show that there's no right way for a woman to be in Hollywood. We have some excellent tangents this episode! The include: why Hailey doesn't read romance novels when she clearly should and TikTok Toilet Time. Gotta listen to find out what that's about! Our question this week is about being tense about the prospect of sex and also how to enjoy the sex you're having without upsetting your partner for “doing it wrong”. We do some educating here around vulvas and clitorises and how they're all delicate little snowflakes that show up with different needs on any given day. This week we're doing a deep dive on Aries Spears' follow-up comments on the fatphobic crap he said about Lizzo. We're calling out all the -isms we see pop up in his commentary and also pointing out the way that these types of comments contribute to patriarchy and domestic violence on a macro level.Highlights:“What is wrong with holding people accountable!?”“Oh so, we're supposed to fuck you for your money, but we're also gold-diggers and leaches..”These interviews do get progressively worse as they go on, so while we do keep things light where possible, take care if you need to not hear this kind of thing. In This Week in Pop-Culture we're talking about Lizzo and.. whatever the hell his name is? Aries Spears? He did an interview where he said some heinous crap about her appearance and was wildly fatphobic. We break down the different ways that even the interviewer participates in this. We talk about the unique ways that fatphobia impacts women vs men and especially women of color. Our listener question this week is from a woman who's annoyed with her partner for making sex jokes and innuendo as a way to initiate sex. In This Week in Pop-Culture we're talking about modern body positivity on the social internet from straight sized influencers. Victoria Garrick is a body positive influencer who posted a video recently showing how videos can be photoshopped as easily as photos can be. While this is wildly valuable information, we're not convinced it doesn't also hit the same parts of your psyche that are impacted by before and after photos which we've ranted about before. Our listener question this week is from a cis woman who's asking about how to handle a partner who is fully engulfed in diet culture and is feeling some negative effects on her relationship because of it. CW: There are a couple mentions of SA in this episode. In This Week in Pop-Culture we're talking about that jackass Matt Gaetz. Matt Gaetz is a US House Rep from Florida who responded to the backlash following the repeal of Roe v Wade by saying that the people who are fighting for abortion rights are mostly fat and unfuckable. He called out a woman on Twitter who then raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in his name to donate to various abortion funds. In This Week in Pop-Culture we're breaking down a story about a water park ride that turned down a young girl due to weight limitations and her father going to the media about it. We use the segment to discuss how we can use personal harms like this to advocate for larger systemic changes towards weight inclusion. Our listener question this week is about sexual compatibility within a long-term partnership. We talk about how its unreasonable to expect yourself to have spontaneous desire before every sexual encounter and what you can do to make peace with responsive desire instead. Then we have wins of the week! Hailey had a staff appreciation party and had a blast with a bunch of other adults throwing water balloons at each other. Then Cassie found out that Icing is still a store and they have all the nostalgic accessories there! In This Week in Pop-Culture we're breaking down how two different celebrities handle being asked to do better. Both Lizzo and Bette Midler have had a misstep recently and we talk about how each of these were handled differently and who did it well. Our listener question this week is about how to navigate living in “the lifestyle” with adult children who may or may not cross paths with you and also tiptoes into a discussion on various kinds of consent. Then we have wins of the week! We're still feeling a little bit heavy about the Supreme Court being supremely shitty, so Cassie takes this segment as an opportunity to further discuss “cancel culture” vs “call-out culture” and how we can make change as society without getting stuck in this constant battle to shame one another for advocating for that change in different ways.Patreon is now live! This week we're talking about an episode of the new season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and refuting the tired old trope that fat women aren't sexually attractive. Then we answer a listener question about fetishes and break down how to work on incorporating aspects of a fetish into your partnered sex life. If fetishes aren't your thing, you might want to stick around anyway because we talk about a lot of things that can be applied more generally to improving your sexual experiences! We also talk about the role of “movement” in our own lives and how we're working to break free of the demands of our smart watches.. Instead of a listener question, we're talking about an article about sex education where we break down the ways that good sex education can be made into an inflammatory article. Around 27 minutes it sounded like transgender people and people who do drag were being conflated with one another. We want to be really clear that these are two different things. People who do drag are not transgender and transgender people are not doing drag. Those are two different things that may overlap, but do NOT always.Episode highlights:“Depressed people aren't choosing to be depressed just like no one chooses to be fat. If we could all win the genetic lottery we would all absolutely choose that.”“We need to feel safe and not angry all the time”“It's hard enough to just live life and try not to be angry all the time.”“An all-you-can-eat buffet can still nourish and sustain you.”“It says good shit.”“I just can't wait until we're not doing that anymore.”“For the record, I'm the OG Gossip Girl fan because I read the books.”“So, basically, I've always been interested in sex.”“Tell me more, is there more sexy things in this..?”“It was appropriate…” “--apparently it's not”“But you're gonna keep doing it because it feels good.”“We can go down that road, but it's going to be a really long episode.”“Having that tiny piece of information could reduce so much shame.”Links for Resources:How to Rearrange Your Post-Pandemic ‘Friendscape'https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/01/well/family/curate-friends.htmlDalton Parents Enraged Over Masturbation Videos for 1st Gradershttps://nypost.com/2021/05/29/dalton-parents-enraged-over-masturbation-videos-for-1st-graders/Amaze Parentshttps://amaze.org/parents/IG: @sexateverysizeEmail: sexateverysize@gmail.comCassie:IG & TikTok: @CassieWillnauerLPCAbout the hosts:Cassie Willnauer, MA, LPCCassie Willnauer is a licensed therapist serving the Kansas City area. We're breaking down the differences between body positivity & and fat-activism this week. We ask the all important question: are we obligated to speak out about injustices when they happen in order to be a good steward of the social internet? We also tackle a listener question about growing up in purity culture and how it has impacted their sexuality into adulthood and marriage. We discuss how religion doesn't have to be all or nothing and how we get to decide which values align for us.Episode highlights:“Please don't promote diet culture, that's the bare minimum of body positivity and fat-activism.”“It's sort of like ‘I'm sad because people think I'm unf*ckable' and that's not oppression.”“First of all--people will f*ck you.”“I'm not saying that a thin person with stretchmarks doesn't deserve to have good self-esteem”“It's hard for me to imagine someone making their livelihood off of [fighting] diet culture and not making a space for fat activism in that.”“I don't think she's an asshole, I just think she can do better.”“I would love to be an activist for everything, but I have a day job. Capitalism doesn't allow us to do that.”“When you think about talking to your kids, think about what messages would have been really good for you to hear.”“There's research shows that the best way to make kids safer with sex is by telling them about sex.”“I just want people to not be in religions that are harming them and I just want people to choose their beliefs for themselves.”Links for Resources:Caroline DoonerInstagram: @thefuckitdiethttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-f-ck-it-diet-basics/id1084208738?i=1000372607404Tina Schermer SellersSex, God, and the Conservative Churchhttps://www.tinaschermersellers.com/booksKristin B. We honestly cannot believe that we got this far into the pod before highlighting Hank & John Green in a whole segment, but fear not, this episode is the one! Hank posted some great videos on TikTok highlighting the strange way we look at “health” with regards to food and we break that down this week. Then on their podcast, Dear Hank and John, John talked about how focusing on the nutritional value of food has never been helpful for his mental health and we fell in love all over again. We briefly touch on Cassie's time working in child welfare and the intersection between that work and the moralism of food and health. We answer a question about a long term relationship where the partners disagree about the root cause of their disconnection and explore themes of gaslighting, communication, and codependency. We also give out some advice on how to find the right therapist for you!Episode highlights:“He's such a good human--he's like the best white guy I know.”“We're not numbers people, so much.”“We do not need that level of specificity, if this is about health.”“Anytime someone announces they're pregnant, my first thought is ‘oh god, please don't f*ck up this kid.'”Links for Resources:Hank & John Greenhttps://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeGDyfEr/https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeGDAfvW/https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-hank-john/id1002937870Juice Box Ithttps://www.juiceboxit.com/IG: @sexateverysizeEmail: sexateverysize@gmail.comCassie:IG & TikTok: @CassieWillnauerLPCAbout the hosts:Cassie Willnauer, MA, LPCCassie Willnauer is a licensed therapist serving the Kansas City area. This week we talk about Will Smith's new “health & fitness” journey *eyeroll*. We dig into the idea of “discipline” and how we tie that to the morality of body size and healthism. Then we break down the phrase “out of shape” and try to decide how we feel about the message it conveys. Special tangents featuring Jonah Hill and Lizzo. In our listener question segment has us tackling some questions from folks about pornography and why “sex addiction” is not a phrase you'll hear us using much. And you a little bit.”“So you're like a normal human, cool.”“Bro eat the fuckin' muffin any time of the day that you want to.”“The way your body looks does not equal how disciplined you are.”“We don't really do solutions here, we just have ideas, okay?”“And this is something we're going to do every week--talk about how old Cassie feels because of the age of celebrities.”“Of course you want to be thin--it's winning the social lottery!”“Take that fat body and do all the things you want to do anyway, because if you're waiting for our culture to say it's okay, they're never going to, so do it anyway.”“It's complicated--not an addiction though.”“If you're not prepared to have conversations with your kids about BDSM porn, then don't have kids.”“Parents can not want their kids watching porn and still talk to them about it.”“There's a difference between choosing [porn and masturbation] instead of partnered sex & having that in addition to [partnered sex].”Links for Resources:Will Smithhttps://www.menshealth.com/fitness/a36371768/will-smith-day-one-gym-photo-instagram/https://www.menshealth.com/entertainment/a36320539/will-smith-shirtless-photo-weight-gain/IG: @sexateverysizeEmail: sexateverysize@gmail.comCassie:IG & TikTok: @CassieWillnauerLPCAbout the hosts:Cassie Willnauer, MA, LPCCassie Willnauer is a licensed therapist serving the Kansas City area.
