In the Lake Grace area, grower Ed Naisbitt has been growing lupins on the family farm for 40 years. It was a crop initially established by his father, and one that has remained a constant in the rotation as the years have gone by.  Ed is a part of the cohort of 'Legume Leaders' that has been established by the Grower Group Alliance, with investment from GRDC. These leaders are sharing their insights on the various legume crops over a seven-part series throughout 2024.  In this episode, Ed tells us about why he has stuck with lupins for four decades and the many benefits they bring to his farming operation.

Welcome back to part 2 of the Veggie Patch Retrospective where we compiled together three previously aired short segments on various aspects of vegetable gardening. Instead of searching for the content in previous episodes, we've put these shorter segments together in a single episode for your listening convenience. Especially as winter drags on, it's helpful to be able to dream of warmer weather when you get back into enjoying your garden. This specific episode is about three popular vegetables found in home gardens: Tomatoes, Beans, and Cucurbits (cucumbers and squashes). Tomatoes are one of the most beloved garden plants, but they can also be frustrating to grow. Learn about the best time to plant them (soil temperature is key so don't be in a hurry), space them, and water them. Unfortunately, you will learn that tomatoes are as popular with pests and pathogens, as they are with humans. Learn how to spot them and manage them so that you can have a productive and delicious crop to harvest. Legumes are another category of popular crops. They include the popular pea (garden, snap, snow and other types) and beans. Legume seeds can typically be planted directly in the ground so there is no need for seed starting or buying transplants. There are also many types of beans to experiment with. There are the traditional bush beans (perhaps one of the easiest to start with), pole beans (that require supports but produce a larger yield) and runner beans (whose plants are sized between bush and pole). Beans can be enjoyed raw, or cooked and can also be dried for future use. Legumes are very versatile crops, as well as being delicious and healthy too! Cucumbers and squashes (members of the cucurbit family) are also home garden favorites. One of the secrets to a productive crop is to harvest the fruits regularly before they get too big. There are so many options available to grow so experiment with them to determine your favorites. Listen to Teresa Golden, Master Gardener Volunteer, as she talks you through the various aspects of growing these vegetable crops and enjoy! With the New Zealand summer in full flight during early 2024, it's timely to review how hot temperatures potentially alter the dry matter yields and nutritive value of our temperate pasture species. Exploring first how hot temperatures impact dry matter yields (kilograms of dry matter grown per hectare per day), the podcast looks at effects of hot weather on New Zealand's most common pasture species combination, perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and white clover (Trifolium repens). Other species discussed include continental (summer active) tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) and cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata, otherwise known as orchard grass) and red clover (Trifolium pratense). Nutritive value of temperate pasture species, as influenced by hot temperatures is covered, looking specifically at digestibility and MJME, as well as NDF, NDFd and non-structural carbohydrates as influenced by hot temperatures. A note that we make within this podcast is that the selection of pasture species should never be made simply on the basis of heat tolerance, in isolation from other factors to consider. Multiple factors also requiring consideration include soil fertility, pH, rainfall/irrigation, and paddock aspect - to name but a few factors other than heat tolerance. Talk with your local PGG Wrightson Seeds agronomy expert for all the information you need around your regrassing requirements. Various sections within the podcast can be found below. Guests: Dr. Limin Kung, University of Delaware, and guest Bonni Kowalke, Stem Ag ConsultingOur Real Science Exchange pubcast always has leading scientists and industry professionals discussing the latest ideas and trends, and tonight, we have two distinguished guests. Dr. Limin Kung and Bonni Kowalke join us to discuss wild yeasts in silage.Dr. Kung begins by giving an overview of the impacts of wild yeast on silage, where they're either going to anaerobically ferment sugars to ethanol or aerobically; these wild yeasts can lead to spoiled silages and spoiled TMR. (8:32)Bonni and Limin then go on to detail management strategies and practices for reducing the impacts of wild yeast on silage and TMR, including harvest speed, silage moisture content, pack density, feed-out rate, and additives. (10:59)Bonni gives her perspective as a consultant about how she works with clients ahead of silage harvest to be able to prevent wild yeast infestation or any other problems. Most of her notes come right after harvest is finished with a list of things the farm wants to do differently next time, which she likens to a game plan for a team sport. (18:09)Dr. Kung describes how to determine if you have an issue with wild yeast in silage. Primarily, one would see aerobic instability via heating and perhaps molding. There will be a distinct telltale odor as well. Unfortunately, there is no on-farm test; samples must be sent to the lab for analysis. (23:10)Limin and Bonni give their top issues in regard to silage quality that they see in the field, along with ways to help producers get the very best quality silage off their fields each year. (26:40)This takes a turn into a discussion about how drone technology could be used in the future for perfecting silage moisture content predictions in the field before chopping. (32:02)Scott asks Bonni and Limin about the addition of NPN (such as urea or anhydrous ammonia) or sugar sources (such as molasses) to silage and what kind of impact that might have on silage quality. (37:24)Bonni gives an overview of silage inoculants and additives. (47:13)Limin and Bonni conclude by comparing the stability of legume silages and corn silages, an overview of inoculation best practices, and their take-home messages to ensure high-quality silage. (51:28)As mentioned in the show, Bonni Kowalke's contact information at Stem Ag Consulting is bonni@stemagconsulting.com.Please subscribe and share with your industry friends to bring more people to join us around the Real Science Exchange virtual pub table.  If you want one of our new Real Science Exchange t-shirts, screenshot your rating, review, or subscription, and email a picture to anh.marketing@balchem.com. _______

Marshall is a motivational speaker, life coach, entrepreneur, and author, offering personal and corporate training to gain emotional power, build wealth and achieve true happiness. He’s written 7 books in 2 years – on personal growth, entrepreneurship, young professionals, sales, leadership, millennials, and breaking fear in relationships. Before that, he built a company that was recognized by Inc. Magazine for 4 years in a row as one of the fastest growing companies in America by using the tactics he later included in his books, and most importantly, by bridging the gap of generational thinking and acting to stay ahead of the market crash trends way in advance in order to combine all into one business plan for immediate success. Tim has taught, trained, and developed some of the most influential business professionals and athletes in the world. He created his company using only a desk and a telephone. Although Tim had $80,000 dollars in his business account when he founded his company, he didn’t spend a single penny of it and built his company 100% organically from the ground up. Tim is also the host of the Power of Breaking Fear podcast. Alfalfa is an important crop for us: grown on an extimated 74 million acres world-wide.  North America is the highest producer, representing 41% of the world-wide total.  Among US crops, alfalfa is the 3rd in value after corn and soybeans with over $8 billion annually.  However, this doesn't include the value of dairy and other animal products. One of the unique properties of alfala and other legume crops, is that they can fix nitrogen from the atmosphere via nodules on the roots that contain bacteria.  This process is called nitrogen fixation. So why would we want to add suplimental nitrogen and other nutrients to the crop?  Yara agronomists, Jimmy Ridgeway and Markus Bratten,CCA help us understand why. Check out the article Jimmy wrote on alfalfa nutrition.

During our very first season, we spent the whole time talking about food and cooking. I mean, we were just getting started and hadn't really figured this whole podcast thing out. Still working on that, by the way. In an effort to make things more fun and interesting, I had Natalia play a game with me. I also think games are a really good way of teaching people about boring subjects, like vegetables and beans. So here comes our next throwback episode. It's all about, you guessed it, veggies and how to cook them with some bean games thrown in. Hope you have as much fun as we did. From Season 1 – It's Bean, Legume or Vegetable. Let's face it, the world of vegetables is daunting. I mean, there is just so.much.produce in the groceries, farmers markets, wholesale clubs. Where do you even start? This vegetable mountain of choice was never a problem for our grandparents or even parents. There were carrots, green beans, peas, iceberg lettuce (also known as just lettuce back then), spinach and that was about it. Now, carrots come in a rainbow, lettuce can be bitter, leafy, Romaine, butter, and more. Then, there are all the beans out there and we're not talking just pinto and navy, those are so yesterday. The new beans are heirloom as are tomatoes. And, we can't forget the whole legume issue. What are they or it and how does it/they fit into this whole balanced diet thing. We have so many questions. Lucky for you, we have A LOT of answers, too! We'll be sorting through this confusing topic of bean or legume or vegetable, we'll share everything we know (or found out) about this super important part of your diet and even play a game! It's all coming up!So, play along, learn a few new things (and in such a fun way, right?) and join us over here in Episode 14 where you get the ins and outs of beans, legumes and, oh yeah, vegetables. And don't forget, there are even more Rants and Raves (or Tips and Tricks) as we go crazy talking about what we love or DON'T. If you have a question, leave it in the comments below and we will be happy to address it in our next episode (and in the comments section). It's time for you to get involved in this whole thing, too! We love to give our peeps a SHOUT OUT! Be sure to listen, subscribe and review our podcast wherever you prefer to listen.. We want to keep doing this! And, one more thing…we are heavily in to our online cooking classes. We've been taping for six months now so that means we're up to almost 30 recipe videos. You should go take a look. And, if you're really, really interested in our online classes, you can click right here to be whisked away to our other website and check out the whole program.
