This is Travis Jay Vernon and Welcome! to the So There I Am... Podcast. I have been spending time in the outdoors since I could walk. I started out catching frogs and insects, and then hunting with everything from a BB gun and archery gear, to chasing big game with a rifle. I have been an avid fisherman everywhere I have lived and traveled. Cooking, foraging, fishing, and hunting have been a driving force for me. The only thing I am more passionate about than these things is sharing them with others and teaching those who want to learn. Along the way I have told, heard, and lived different stories.Stories told well allow a listener to live vicariously, reminisce of past experiences, or even dream of adventures to come. I will be sharing stories with you from my own experiences as a fly-fishing guide, retail manager, outdoor enthusiast, traveler, explorer and just everyday life. There will be stories from guests and stories from friends and others in different locales and varied walks of life. Every day is an opportunity for new adventures and expanding your own story. Let’s get to the stories! So, there I am…
Show Notes:41 The BWCA – Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Locations: Boundary Waters of Northern MN This is one of those very special places to me. Show Notes:40 No Excuses, Just A Lot of New Adventures and Life Changes These Past 2 YearsLocations: These last 2 years in Evanston, Wyoming2022-PresentIt has been a crazy past 2 years. In helping my parents while they found some land in Wyoming to build on Nancy and I fell in love with the lot next door. We sold our home and greenhouse that Nancy had owned for many years, and we sold our home on the river in Utah. It has been a crazy ride selling our homes and then building a new one. I have put this podcast on the backburner and worked more as a guide than I ever have. I really can't believe it has been 2 years and I am enjoying the process of creating a new greenhouse, home, and experience in our new place. Life is crazy sometimes but I wouldn't trade where I am for anything. Love it!I would love to connect with you all at Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube! Show Notes:39 What I Have Learned and Continue to Learn from Teachers, Employers, and Co-WorkersLocations: Everywhere I have been and ongoing 1970's to PresentIt is funny the different paths that simple decisions will take us down in this life. One of the best managers I have ever had was Marc Puhl. A Navy Chief Petty Officer, Store/District Manager and still a friend. He and many others in my life have had impacts in ways they probably don't even know of. I was taught that regardless of the type of person you are around you can learn from them. Examples can be what to do or even what not to do, but one must keep their sights on goals and growth. I hope to be able to share some key points of continuing to grow in life by learning from others, the good, the bad, and the amazing. Show Notes 37:Rockhounding Adventures with NancyLocations: Wyoming and UtahThere are some amazing rocks and gems you can find in the outdoors. I grew up looking for fossils and rocks. Rockhounding has been a part of my life and I am lucky that my wife Nancy not only tolerates it but enjoys it with me. We have 2 rotary tumblers and a vibratory tumbler now and I am sure we will have more lapidary stuff to play with as we get older. It is just one more thing to look at the ground for and they make some beautiful conversation pieces. Since our trip to Scotland and Ireland was once again put on hold due to Covid and travel restrictions we decided to go on a week long rockhounding adventure. Make sure you visit your local rock shop and do your best to always get your supplies from local dealers when possible or online from small mom and pop shops when you can. Show Notes 36:Fall 2021 Big Game GuidingLocations: Wyoming and UtahI have always been fascinated by big game. Elk and mule deer are a magnificent animals and superb table fare. I love teaching others and enjoy guiding people who appreciate the wilderness and the beauty of nature. I struggle from time to time when I am guiding about the type of people that I am with. I have been doing it long enough that most of the people I fish and hunt with are repeat customers, but I also take out some new people each year. You never what you are going to get until you are out there. I have seen best friends fall apart when the going gets tough and I have seen people that are complete opposites find a bond through hunting and fishing. This year I had a couple firsts that are worth telling the stories of. There are days when nothing comes together, or you do not make good decisions and mess up your chance. Always remember that the worst hunt can become the best in just 5 seconds. Keep at it, stay positive, and sometimes everything comes together. The pursuit is exciting, the pack out and butchering is pure work, and the meals and memories are exquisite. Show Notes 35:Another Hobby: Brazilian Paper Hot Air Balloons (If you do this be careful!)Locations: Utah and WisconsinI am weird about my hobbies; they have always been cyclical with me. I would do one and dive in feet first. I tend to buy all the stuff you need and then I get excited about the next one and dive in again. It has created a lifelong love of learning and exploring new things. In the mid 90's (yup I am that old now), I was in Brazil on a church mission. We were teaching a great guy who was retired Federal Police. He taught us about making these paper balloons. It is illegal to do in Brazil because of the fire danger…so of course I jumped in. More of a belly flop at the start but they got way better as I practiced and met others who enjoy it. Show Notes 34:Looking for Treasure and Lost Spanish Gold with my Grandma BettyLocations: UtahTreasure hunting has been something I have pursued my entire life. The hunt for lost gold and mines from the Spanish that were in Utah has been intriguing to me and I enjoy any reason to get into the woods and mountains. This is mainly a teaser. While I do discuss some topics and talk about spending time looking for gold with my Grandma Betty, I do not go into too much detail. If you would like more information, feel free to contact me. When panning or looking for gold please follow all laws and respect others claims. DO NOT TRESPASS! You can recreationally pan for gold in many National Forests and BLM land. Many of the treasure stories you hear and read about are not true. They are embellished by the authors to get you to part with your own treasure for the story. Keep that in mind while you look for treasure but also keep in mind…some of it is true.Get out there and live your stories!!If you are enjoying the stories and the podcast, I would really appreciate a 5 star review and please subscribe so you don't miss an episode. Show Notes 33:Hobbies and How I Got Started Carving Duck DecoysLocations: Utah and IdahoHobbies have always been a money drain and a release for me. I have a lot of hobbies and a few of them I am passionate about. When I was in college, my friend Jason Randolph introduced me to duck hunting over decoys with dogs and I have been forever thankful. I love ducks, dogs, and decoys. I soon began a collection of decoys for my own decoy spread and then began trying to make my own birds. Thanks to the DecoyCarvingForum (now a group on Facebook) and personal instruction from Tom Matus, I was able to get my birds into much better shape than my first cork goldeneye decoy. They are a magnificent animal and superb table fare. Nancy was skeptical when I went archery hunting for elk the first year and came home with a cow elk later that evening. She was shocked. She started shooting archery and soon was chasing elk with her bow. Following breast cancer, she struggled to get her draw weight back up to the needed poundage so has been pursuing elk with a crossbow these last few years. Many missed opportunities and frustrations later, Nancy tagged her very first elk. The following year we put in for a limited entry unit in Wyoming and drew out. 2020 was a crazy year all around but Nancy her biggest bull elk to date and it was an experience neither of us will ever forget! Show Notes 30:Road Trip to Oregon for Clamming, Crabbing, and FishingLocations: Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and WyomingWOW! Our world is crazy, but you do not have to be. Nancy and I decided after our trip to the UK was cancelled due to COVID-19, to travel to Oregon and go crabbing and clamming. We stayed at a crazy fun hotel in Crescent, Oregon called the Crescent Moon Motel. We got the glitter room, and the owner was super fun. We had a great Air BNB in Coos Bay, OR (Hollywood by the Bay). Great hosts and a super fun little spot. It is a bed, shower, and living space. Think kitchenette without the kitchen. There is a kitchen sink, microwave, and stuff but no stove. We took our Camp Chef and cooked outside. It was a great trip! We fished, clammed, and went crabbing in Coos Bay. For great gear and bait and local knowledge hit up the folks at The Bite's On Bait and Tackle. Below is a link to their Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/thebiteson/ Nancy caught a great silver salmon, and we came home with a bunch of crab. Since coming home we have had some great meals with our families. JJ is an amazing guide and friend and a mediocre golfer lol, but if you get the chance you should float the North Platte river with him for some great fishing or hunt waterfowl with WYOBRASKA Waterfowl. It is hard to get JJ because he is booked most days, but I promise if you do you will have a great day even when the fish or birds do not cooperate. I spent the first few years focused on all of the things that I hadn't been able to do in the western states, whitetail deer and turkey hunting, fishing for musky, walleye, and sturgeon, and finding all sorts of new mushrooms and wild edibles. This podcast is a story about a work friend named Chuck and my first experience with poison ivy. We fish for brook trout near the Kinnikinnick River and have a great time. I had some great times fishing a certain bend on the Weber river in Utah and had a client name one of my favorite runs. Show Notes:How I Started Guiding Locations: Northern UtahBeing a fly fishing guide was something that I didn't try to do, it just sort of happened. I talked with the right person at the right time and had put in my time on the water to become proficient. When it came to teaching, well, I just love teaching. The hardest part of guiding for me was learning how to read people and providing them with the type of trip that they were after. In the beginning I would try to divine what that was. Now that I am older I just ask people. This saves time and works well. Shopping with Mom, Being Sick, and Talking Squirt into Helping Me Gut a Mule Deer with My Little Sister Ashli Telling Her Side of the StoryLocation: Mostly Utah, USAFall 1991ishOne of the things that I really do not like is shopping. As a child I would do everything I could to avoid going to the city and shopping. In this podcast I talk about some of the ways I would make it so people wouldn't take me. I also talk about how I would fake sick to stay home but on one occasion I was actually sick and had a dilemma when a nice mule deer buck was grazing next to my rifle target at 100 yards when the muzzleloader season was on. I then had the problem of getting it back to the house and gutted but was extremely ill. My little sister Ashli was home with me that day. I talked her into helping me to her never-ending regret. I tell my version of the story and then invited her over to tell her version. The only real discrepancy is in Ashli's version my mother comes home. My mother would like it to be known she was not a terrible mother. She worries people will think she wasn't a good mother. Nothing could be farther from the truth! My mother was amazing and raised my siblings and I when my father was on cruise. I can't imagine the difficulties military wives face raising kids, let alone a child such as myself. I am very thankful for the love and patience of my mother. Black Hills, Turkeys, Oreos, and Hunting with NancyLocation: Black Hills, South Dakota, USASpring 2016Nancy worked very hard for her first turkey. We had some amazing meals with our friends Nick and Seth from MN and SD respectively. We hunted hard and did what we needed to in order to put Nancy on her first turkey. Following her bird, we chase mine and finish 4 for 4 in our group for SD Black Hills turkeys. I love this area and look forward to hunting here every chance I get. Nancy did everything she could to mess up my hunt lol but my perseverance paid off. As always it was fun and I hope that you can enjoy the adventure along with me. For those who are interested, you can get your turkey tags through the Game & Fish in most states. Some have over-the-counter (OTC) options but many are by lottery draw only. Visit your local Game and Fish web site for opportunities near you. If you have never been hunting and would like to, first step is to get your Hunter Safety Course finished up. Some states offer a Mentorship as a possibility. Another great option is to contact the First Hunt Foundation. It is a great organization that is to help those interested in learning to hunt. I also highly recommend Volume 1 & 2 of The Complete Guide to Hunting, Butchering, and Cooking Wild Game books by Steven Rinella. Another outstanding resource is Hank Shaw and his books as well as Hunt Angler Gardener Cook group on Facebook. Show Notes:Bucket Lists: Places, Activities, and Experiences Locations: EverywhereWhen I talk about my bucket list it includes so much that I was once told, “You can't call it a bucket list because buckets have bottoms.” Well that is the truth. Once I accomplish checking off an item on the list I am off to do the next thing. Often, I am planning the next trip and experience while on an adventure. From checking off all the cutthroat species in the Western United States, to catching as many state fish as possible, to visiting a new country, or seeing something new, I love having new experiences. My wife learned quickly that regardless of where we go, I am going to try and fish and explore. I have done it my whole life and don't plan on slowing down. I hope this podcast inspires you to go try something new or start planning to check something off of your own bucket list. Life is short and we don't have time to do it all, so go get started and Live Your Stories!!If you are enjoying the stories and the podcast, I would really appreciate a 5 star review and please subscribe so you don't miss an episode. Show Notes:Old Wives' Tales Locations: Utah, Wyoming, Brazil, Florida, and Everywhere ElseOld Wives' Tales, you have all heard them. Some you may even believe and some you pass on. In today's podcast we discuss some of the most common I have dealt with while fishing and just spending time in the out of doors. They include eating whitefish, suckers, and pike to antelope or mixing choke cherries or mangos with milk. Some have a rich history while others are just personal bias passed onto others without any facts behind it. Show Notes:My Father's Hands and My Little Girl CassiLocations: Utah You only get a few amazing dogs in this life and Cassi was one of mine. She taught me a lot and was a great retriever and friend. I miss her still. I have a hard time talking about Cassi and how I lost her so I hope you forgive me for reading the story I wrote called, My Father's Hands. I would not have been able to talk coherently if I didn't force myself to read this story. There isn't much more to tell you than that. This is a good story, but it is sad and discusses the death of a dog. It is also reassuring and tells of the love of a Father. Show Notes:Fishing, Floating Logs, and Pterodactyls with KidsLocations: Utah and SW Wyoming1997 to the PresentFishing with children are some of the best days on the water. They may lose interest quickly if the fishing slows down but there are always a lot of activities you can do. The youth see the world in such a different way that adults do. Their insights of nature are amazing and so are some of the fun stories I have had while guiding. I have a full-time job now days, so I only guide on my days off. My days off book up quickly during peak season, but there is always a chance we can get out on the water to chase trout. If you are looking to book a trip hit up Jans in Park City, UT. I always recommend full day trips because they give us more options of places to go and see. If something truly bizarre happens maybe you will make it on the next podcast! Hope you enjoy these stories from being on the water. There are more to come and as always I hope that you can envision the stories along with me. He shares how he feels about Grover and we discuss toaster oven tips for epic action figure battles as well as fireworks and fires that we have experienced/caused… Much of what we did wasn't thought out very well, but we didn't die, so we have that going for us. As always it was fun, and I hope that you can enjoy the adventure along with us. I would love to connect with you all at Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube! Show Notes:Rope Swings, Parachutes, Sumo Wrestling, and Grover Locations: Japan, Utah, CaliforniaEarly 1980'sMy brother Jared stops by to chat about some stories when we were growing up. We talk about playing on the rope swing at my grandparents' house and playing a game of strength with a surplus parachute in the wind. I am reminded of our Sumo Wrestling matches in Japan as well as the toy Grover doll that we are both pretty sure is possessed of evil and talking my mother into helping shoot water balloons from the garage. Much of what we did wasn't thought out very well, but we didn't die, so we have that going for us. As always it was fun, and I hope that you can enjoy the adventure along with us. Show Notes:Fly Fishing Guide StoriesLocations: Utah and SW Wyoming1997 to the PresentI have had some amazing days guiding for trout with a fly rod. There have been ups and downs and everything in between. Most days we hit the water, learn a lot, have opportunities to catch trout, and the entire time we are outside experiencing nature. Now from time to time, something happens that is new or bizarre. Often these experiences start with a question…sometimes as a guide we pretend to not hear the foolish ones as to not embarrass people. And then sometimes, it is too good to pass up. I have a full-time job now days, so I only guide on my days off. My days off book up pretty quickly during peak season, but there is always a chance we can get out on the water to chase trout. If you are looking to book a trip hit up Jans in Park City, UT. Show Notes:Suzi, Snow Camos, and the BeastLocations: Utah1980'sHere are a couple stories about Suzi the Suzuki Moped, getting the Beast stuck, getting so cold and wet I almost didn't make it home, and one of the best Christmas gifts I have ever received. Looking ahead to the next season has always been a passion and a curse for me. I enjoy the anticipation and the planning of the next adventure almost as much as the adventure itself. Today's podcast talks about some of the grouse hunts I took the family moped on (Suzi), about a time when my little brother and I almost destroyed the Beast, and a time when I was careless and almost lost my shotgun in the river. I learned a lot of lessons because of these stories. Some were scary at the time, some scary when I looked back but as always it was fun, and I hope that you can enjoy the adventure along with me. Stories From My Youth: Part 1Locations: Japan, Utah, CaliforniaEarly 1980'sThere are so many crazy and fun stories from my youth that it will take many episodes to get them all recorded. Part 1 includes bike riding after school to fishing spots, dodging traffic for crayfish, fishing off the pier in Yokosuka Japan, my first pheasant hunt, learning how to hunt and stalk mice with a BB gun, and catching my first trout with my father. Many of the small things I did as a youth have helped me to become a better fisher and hunter now that I am aging into the “Old Salt” I look forward to being. As always it was fun, and I hope that you can enjoy the adventure along with me. I would love to connect with you all at Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube! My First Turkey HuntLocation: Polk County, Wisconsin, USAApril 2011My first turkey was easier than it should have been. I had some great teachers and I discuss some things that a turkey hunter should consider when using calls, decoys, and setting up. I would love to connect with you all at Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube! Foraging for MushroomsLocation: Uinta Mountains, Summit County, UtahFall 2002Foraging for mushrooms is an outstanding hobby and a great way to add tasty treats to the dinner table. This podcast discusses some cautions and it is highly recommended you look up local experts in your area to get started. Doing this will help you to avoid making mistakes in identification and you will meet fun people. For those who are interested, you can find good resource books on Amazon.Mushrooms Demystified is a bit overwhelming to the novice but is something you will grow into. Another book I like is The Complete Mushroom HunterLook up local clubs too. My First SteelheadLocation: Bulkley River, British Columbia, CanadaFall 2002A discussion of the beauty and grandeur of the British Columbia landscape and the amazing steelhead that make the migration to their spawning grounds. I was very unprepared for my first steelhead trip when it came to equipment and especially rain gear. While fighting the fish of a lifetime almost everything that could go wrong did go wrong. It was a great experience and I hope that you can enjoy the adventure along with me. For those who are interested, I stayed at the Bulkely River Lodge. The people, food, and experience were second to none. I go as often as I am able now. If you can't make it all the way to Canada to chase these amazing fish there may be some closer to you. When it comes to tying flies for steelhead one of my favorite books is Steelhead Fly Tying Art & Design by Dec Hogan and Marty Howard.I would love to connect with you all at Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube! Stories are my favorite form of communication, and my favorite stories are those that get me to think, cry, laugh, or even change and adapt. A good story stays with you. My father would say, “You only remember the best and the worst, mediocrity is forgotten.” Stories told well allow a listener to live vicariously, reminisce of past experiences, or even dream of adventures to come. Let's get to the stories! So, there I am…Music Courtesy of Plum Stickie and used with Permission:Audley Crazy; Written by Plum Stickie; Performed by Plum Stickie
