Hello to you listening in North Platte, Nebraska!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit mire) for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Maybe like me you could use a bit of good news right  about now. What if you could find the “best America there ever was?” Best-selling author and award-winning journalist Bob Greene found it in a small town, North Platte, Nebraska. As the story goes: During World War II, American soldiers from every city and walk of life rolled through North Platte, Nebraska, on troop trains en route to their ultimate destinations in Europe and the Pacific. What happened next?Prompted by one woman's idea this tiny town of 12,000 people transformed its modest railroad depot into the North Platte Canteen. Every day of the year, every day of the war years the Canteen - staffed and funded entirely by local volunteers - was open from five A.M. until the last troop train pulled away a little after midnight. In a time of coupons, shortages, and doing without that comes with war this community provided welcoming words, support, baskets of produce, fresh-baked goods, homemade sandwiches, magazines, books, bottles of milk, cauldrons of coffee, and treats to more than six millions GIs by the time the war ended four years later.Think about it. At a time of national adversity, crisis and deprivation because everything was going to the troops and the war effort, ordinary people pulled together to honor their country's brave sons by giving from the heart and their kitchens, their fields and dairies. Interviews with some of the volunteers and servicemen tell a love story of small-town generosity because it was something that they could do.Question: Yes, these times are perilous; but so was World War II. We might feel like we're fighting a war on our own soil for the first time since the Civil War. But we are not lost when we choose to summon the great expanse of hope that is the human heart. If 12,000 ordinary persons could care for six million GIs, what is in our power to do? Where is the next “best America there ever was?”Click to access book: Once Upon a Town - The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen by Bob GreeneYou're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Have you ever struggled to find areas to hunt? Especially in Nebraska, where over 97% of the state is privately owned land, access to hunting can be difficult to come by. We know from previous research that a lack of access is also a top reason why people stop hunting or don't start at all. But public access programs like Open Fields and Waters and the Nebraska Community Access Partnership are tackling this issue head-on. For any hunter interested, these programs provide access to quality private lands to hunt; for landowners, it's another way to bring in a little extra income. This month we are joined by Adam Kester, Access Program Manager at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, and Addie Piernicky, NCAP Coordinating Wildlife Biologist at Pheasants Forever, to learn all about how these programs are transforming hunting access in Nebraska and beyond.   Resources: Nebraska Community Access Partnership Open Fields & Waters (website) Open Fields and Waters: Expanding Hunter Opportunity (via YouTube) Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Offices: Alliance: 308-763-2940, Bassett: 402-684-2921, Kearney: 308-865-5310, Lincoln: 402-471-5561, Norfolk: 402-370-3374, North Platte: 308-535-8025   Addie Piernicky [website] Adam Kester [website] Dr. Andrew Little [academic profile, @awesmlabdoc] Nathan Pflueger [website] AWESM Lab [website, @awesmlab] Nebraska Pheasants Forever [website, @pheasants_quailforever_of_ne]   Watch these podcasts on YouTube If you enjoy this podcast, leave a rating and review so others can find us!   Music by Humans Win Produced and edited by Iris McFarlin

Join me Jeff Tigger Erhardt, Rebecca Wanner AKA BEC and my crew as we hear how Angus, Red Angus, Smokey and Buff colored calves all can receive the same premium.  Plus news, markets and a whole lot of the cow stuff that you will only get on this all new episode of The Ranch It Up Radio Show.  Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel.   Season 5, EPISODE 231 Sustainable Beef: A Processing Plant Where Color Doesn't Matter New Beef Processing Plant With Competitive Fed Cattle Grid Premiums The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) recently showcased an innovative fed cattle grid pricing system at the NCBA Trade Show. This system, adopted by Sustainable Beef LLC, is set to transform the industry by offering competitive premiums for upper two-thirds Choice carcasses, regardless of hide color. Angus, Red Angus & Charolais Cross Cattle Receive Same Premium Tom Brink, RAAA CEO, announced that Sustainable Beef LLC, opening in April 2025 in North Platte, Nebraska, will implement a color-blind grid system, equally rewarding Red Angus, Black Angus, and smoky cattle. “This system levels the feeder calf market, allowing feedlots to confidently invest in Red Angus and black-hided cattle, knowing both will qualify for top premiums,” Brink said. Kelly Smith, RAAA Director of Commercial Marketing, emphasized RAAA's efforts to connect Red Angus producers with feedlots through its feeder cattle network. He highlighted that FCCP-tagged cattle will meet the Angus label's genetic verification standards, ensuring seamless access to premium marketing opportunities. Mark Nelson, Sustainable Beef's Director of Cattle Procurement, reinforced the company's commitment to sustainability and producer profitability. Sustainable Beef will provide an exceptional work environment and favor moderate carcass sizes, which naturally benefits Red Angus genetics. The RAAA-Sustainable Beef collaboration represents a significant step forward in ensuring equitable market opportunities for all quality cattle. This initiative will drive profitability for producers while delivering high-quality beef to consumers. For more details, visit RedAngus.org. Cattle Industry News JBS Sees Strong Demand Despite Challenges In The U.S. Cattle Cycle According to JBS executives, JBS expects a more challenging US cattle supply scenario in 2025 compared to last year, when strong beef consumption and initiatives to improve commercial and operational efficiencies contributed to the performance of the US beef business unit. Executives commented saying that the U.S. cattle cycle will likely be more challenging this year, regardless of the speed of herd replacement, specifically saying that JBS Beef North America's margins still have room to improve by 1% to 1.5% in 2025 due to the company's initiatives to improve commercial and operational efficiencies. Robust demand continues to support the company's investments in expanding its US meat processing and prepared food facilities. In February, JBS announced $200 million in investments to expand its beef production facilities in Cactus, Texas, and Greeley, Colo. In the other regions where JBS operates, demand for all animal proteins also remains strong. While avian influenza had already been detected in cattle and other mammals, including in the United States, the infection of a sheep will increase concern over the potential impact of the disease's spread. There have been cases among humans which have ranged in severity from no symptoms to, in rare cases, death. But there has not yet been any confirmed transmission between humans. The virus is spread through contact with infected birds or other species, including through touching their droppings and bedding, although people can also catch the virus by killing or preparing infected poultry for cooking. Avian flu has been detected in cattle in the United States, with the Centers for Disease Control reporting 41 cases and 989 dairy herds affected as of last Friday. Experts say the risk of avian flu to the general public is very low. Mexico Pushing For More Domestic Pork Facing Trade War Mexico has become a huge importer of U.S. pork, but the government in Mexico City is now talking about self-sufficiency as trade tensions with Washington are about to intensify. In a recent meeting with domestic producers, the Mexican Agriculture Minister pointed out that the country's own pork sector only meets 53% of demand. Imports last year reached 1.4 million metric tons, a large majority from the neighboring United States. President Donald Trump, in early February, threatened 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, imposed taxes on large numbers of imports from both countries in early March and has vowed to tariff most other products on April 2. Canada has already retaliated against some U.S. products including chicken, while Mexico is poised to impose tariffs on exports including meats if the United States carries out its threat next week.  Pork demand has soared as Mexico has become more affluent. Last year, 38% of U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports went to Mexico. By value, exports to Mexico jumped 10% in 2024 to nearly $2.6 billion, more than the next two markets, China/Hong Kong and Japan combined. The value of U.S. pork exports to Mexico has more than doubled from $1.15 billion in 2020, and the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service projected further growth this year before trade policy disruptions. Sustainable Beef Plant Comes To Nebraska A crowd estimated at more than 1,200 people witnessed a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a $400-million cattle processing plant this week in North Platte, Neb., a project that Sustainable Beef LLC originally announced in 2021. The new facility is expected to provide about 850 jobs and expand beef processing capacity in the area in addition to establishing more long-term sustainable growth for local cattle producers and family farms. The facility is expected to process an estimated 1,500 head per day, according to Sustainable Beef officials.  We will have more on Sustainable Beef LLC and its new fed cattle grid pricing system with Red Angus Cattle on next week's program.   RanchChannel.Com Now Has The Futures Markets & New Listings Futures Markets RanchChannel.com now has futures markets at your fingertips!  Feeder Cattle, Live Cattle, Corn, Wheat, Soybeans, Soybean Oil, Milk Class IV, and Ethanol.  Information is provided by DTN and market information may be delayed by as much as 10 minutes.  Click Here for more information!
