You may have seen this pattern too: Having finished a steady paced run you notice that your pace stayed reasonably constant, your perceived effort remained even throughout, but your heart rate data shows that your heart rate increased throughout the session. Something I know I lack here in Norfolk is hilly running routes, so I'm going to set myself the challenge next month to try and achieve 1,000 meters vertical gain per week with my running. To some that won't seem like much... but to me it'll be a big step-up and will build some great leg strength! Are you going to join me? On this episode of my daily running podcast, I wanted to share some of my experience of working with hypermobile runners. Many of us have to stretch regularly to keep our muscles from getting overly tight in key areas... but there are some more 'bendy' runners out there who certainly don't want for range of motion; in fact these runners have too much of a good thing, if anything. Their challenge is teaching their body to control the available movement around key joints. For hypermobile runners, strength and stability work is key! Take a listen and let me know what you think! Pacing is a work in progress for most of us runners. It's amazing how the elites are so fine-tuned in terms of being able to run a given pace on demand, whether they're doing intervals or a specific tempo workout. You know that feeling... Those runs where the first five minutes feel just horrible! It almost always gets better, once you're through those first few minutes and your body has figured out that it's running, but it can be so tough. Something I've learnt over the years is the importance of stressing your body in the warm-up before any race where you're going to start at a strong pace, like a 5-10km race.
