Three regular guys sharing their enthusiasm and knowledge of America's native spirit; bourbon! Each episode we review a bourbon or rye: shelfies, store picks, rare bottles, and the occasional flight. Every Friday we will bring you a new selection for your shelves along with our thoughts and spirited discussion on related trends and topics in the bourbon world. Hosts Michael Kinney, Anthony Limperos and Steven DeLucia open a bottle and travel down the rabbit hole...
The Mash Up podcast is an absolute gem for bourbon enthusiasts and those looking to learn more about the world of whiskey. As a long-time bourbon drinker, I have found this podcast to be both entertaining and educational. The hosts create an atmosphere that makes you feel like you're sitting around with friends, sharing a pour and engaging in lively discussions about various bottles.
One of the best aspects of The Mash Up podcast is the genuine camaraderie between the hosts. Their chemistry is evident, and they bring their unique perspectives to each episode. I particularly enjoy how they review bourbons that most people can find on the shelf, rather than focusing solely on rare or expensive bottles. This approach makes their reviews relatable and accessible to the average bourbon drinker.
Another great aspect of this podcast is its lightheartedness and sense of fun. The hosts clearly enjoy what they do, and it shines through in their conversations. They don't take themselves too seriously, which creates a relaxed and enjoyable listening experience. It's refreshing to hear knowledgeable individuals discuss whiskey without pretentiousness or snobbery.
While there aren't many flaws with The Mash Up podcast, some listeners might prefer a more structured format or additional segments beyond bottle reviews. However, personally, I appreciate the conversational style as it feels authentic and allows for spontaneous moments that add to the charm of the show.
In conclusion, if you're a fan of bourbon or simply enjoy podcasts that are informative yet fun, The Mash Up is definitely worth a listen. The hosts' passion for whiskey, combined with their dynamic camaraderie, creates an engaging and entertaining experience. Whether you're new to bourbon or a seasoned connoisseur, this podcast will leave you looking forward to each new episode and inspire your own exploration into the world of whiskey. Cheers to The Mash Up!
Star Hill Farm American Wheat Whisky is a new offering from Maker's Mark and it also represents something that is wildly different from what we've come to expect from such a storied brand. The mash bill is comprised of predominately soft red winter wheat and malted barley. While the lack of corn means that this cannot be labeled as a bourbon, it is an Estate Whiskey Certified product which means that 2/3 of all the grains used were grown on Maker's property and all production processes also took place there. This expansion of the product line is another welcomed change. But how does it taste? You'll get to hear our thoughts as we taste this whisky for the first time in a blind versus other special Maker's releases. In this episode, we also talk about Father's Day bourbon releases and Steven is quizzed about his knowledge of Maker's bottles. We want to thank our listener Scott D. for providing us with this bottle to review. We appreciate all of you for listening. Cheers. --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyTW: https://twitter.com/themashupkyPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderMedicinal Whiskey Charity Gala: visit https://www.medicinalwhiskeycharity.org/Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!
Bluegrass Distillers was founded in 2012 in Lexington, KY. Starting with a dedicated leader and a 250 gallon still, Bluegrass Distillers persevered and truly got better with age. After expanding as much as they could at their original location, they recently purchased Elkwood Farm in Midway, Kentucky, built a state of the art distillery, and curated an award winning bourbon tour experience. For this episode, we hang with co-owners of Bluegress Distillers, Sam Rock and Ben Franzini. They discuss their humble beginnings, all the exciting things going on currently, and their plans for the future. In addition, we get to chat with one of the newest members of the company, Chase Wagers. Chase is a certified bourbon steward, brand ambassador, and helps curate single barrels/new products for Bluegrass Distillers. He brought some amazing stuff for us to try from the various labels that are part of the Bluegrass Distillers brand. We already knew about Bluegrass Distillers and all of their potential, but after this conversation, we are convinced that they might be one of the best kept secrets in bourbon. You are definitely going to want to pay attention to all the amazing stuff they are doing. This was an insightful, fun, and eye opening conversation. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did and we sincerely hope you will check out Bluegrass Distillers. --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyTW: https://twitter.com/themashupkyPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!
Oak Bowery is an unincorporated community in southern Chambers County, Alabama, United States. It lies along US Route 432 just north of Auburn. But for uz, Oak Bowery is the very first release by TJ Gamble who most of you know as Brewzle. This inaugural expression is a bold offering that is a blend of wheated and rye bourbon bottled at 123 proof. Only 1,061 bottles were produced. This whiskey reflects the early vision and craftsmanship of Oak Bowery founder TJ Gamble, who personally curated this blend to showcase complexity, balance, and Southern character. So how does it taste? You'll have to give us a listen to find out. We cover a lot of territory in this episode and even employed a professional "laugher" to help us with the review. --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@themashupkyPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!
You've heard us talk a lot about River Roots Barrel Company. In a short amount of time, this brand from Cleveland, Ohio has taken the whiskey industry by storm. For this week, we taste and review an 8 year old 132.77 proof bourbon that was recently released by River Roots. The liquid in the bottle comes from an ultra short barrel. What did we think? Laws Whiskey House is located in Denver, Colorado and it is the official whiskey of the University of Colorado. Even though this brand has been around for quite some time, most of us are not super experienced with it. In fact, we all remember seeing some their A.D. Laws Four Grain Bourbon on the shelves, but none of us tried it. Fast forward to this weeks episode. We were able to get our hands a 10.5 year hazmat single barrel rye from Laws that was picked by a local barrel group (Hooch Barrel Club). Will be impressed? Maybe? Will you be entertained? Absolutely. Join us this week as we taste and review this hazmat rye bottle and some other offerings from Laws. We are again joined by our friend JD from the Bourbon Hunters and there are many laughs that were had.--------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@themashupkyPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!
It's been a minute since we had a guest to just hang, talk about bourbon things, and share in the comradery of the spirit. If you were expecting a short this week, buckle up, because we've got a long for you. When we heard that our friend JD Fritzges was going to be in town for a barrel pick at Wild Turkey, we knew that we had to record with him. JD is a co-host of The Bourbon Hunters Podcast which was started back in 2019. In this episode, we discuss a wide range of topics with JD and taste various barrel picks that he has been involved with. It's a fun episode that contains some behind the scenes info, industry insights, and a lot of laughs. We hope you enjoy listening to this one as much as we enjoyed hanging and recording with JD. Even though it's 2025. the 2024 batches of Stagg (Jr) are still just now hitting certain markets. It's hard to believe that there are four batches of Stagg now! How the times have changed. Uncut and unfiltered, Stagg is a classic bourbon that is approximately a decade old, carries a high proof, and represents the one of the pioneers of what we now know as modern day Buffalo Trace. This whiskey needs no introduction. We've reviewed it before, but Stagg newbies and enthusiasts alike know that there is a lot of variation between batches. Thanks to a wonderful listener (Brian) who sent us samples of both batches, we are able to give you our honest and candid assessment. Some have said that Stagg 24D is one of the best batches in recent years. What do we think? You'll have to listen to find out. We also talk about a bad grilling experience that Anthony had recently as well as some local bourbon drama. We forgot to do a "pass, try, or buy," but Stagg is always a buy if you can get it for retail price.
For this weeks short, we taste and review a product that is brand new for 2025. Bomberger's PFG (Precision Fine Grain) Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a meticulously crafted spirit. It starts off as aged Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey and after it's matured, it's transferred to a second new, custom, proprietary toasted and charred French fine grain oak barrel of the most exacting specifications. After more maturation, these barrels undergo filtration and the final product is bottled at 100.2 proof (50.1% ABV). So, how does it taste? Can a 100 proof whiskey standout amongst all of the high proof offerings as of late. You'll have to listen to find out. We are again joined by a special guest host for this short and you can expect our signature honesty and humor. To celebrate 100 years of Calumet Farm, the famed racehorse breeder and (more recently) proprietor of delicious liquids, released a very special 18 year blend of their finest stocks in one of the most attractive decanters we've seen in modern whiskey. Calumet Farm has a history of Kentucky Derby, Belmont, Preakness, and Triple Crown winners, and has a staggering 11 horses in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. With all of those accolades, the bourbon has to be good, right? Well, you'll have to listen to hear what we think of this $499 bottle. In this episode, we're joined by a familiar special guest and you'll get to hear about Kenny's recent trip to Willett. For this week's short, we head deep into the rickhouses and distilleries to explore another bourbon that was nearly forgotten about. When rare whiskies or bourbons are lost, Diageo helps get them back to their intended place with their Orphan Barrel series. The newest release in the Orphan Barrel series is Fanged Pursuit Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. This bourbon is aged 17 years and has a "variable" mashbill of 68%-74% corn, 19%-22% rye, and 19% malted barley. So how does this one taste? Could this be one of the best Orphan Barrels ever? “Be good to the land and the land will be good to you.” Frey Ranch was started by Colby & Ashley Frey. The Frey family has been farming in Northern Nevada since 1854 and they knew their grains were extremely high quality which is part of the reason they started a distillery. Despite their reputation and acclaim, none of uz had ever really tasted their product. For this weeks episode, we got a chance to taste and review a single barrel, barrel strength offering from Frey Ranch as well as some samples of other offerings (Thanks, Mike). What do you get when you mix the world's largest teaching distillery with the finest students on the planet? The answer is: "Kentucky WildCask Bourbon!" If you are an astute listener, you've heard Anthony reference the "esteemed institution" and the James B. Beam Institute. The bourbon we taste and review this week was the created by a group of students at the University of Kentucky. It might be hard to believe, but UK has a Distillation, Wine, and Brewing Certificate and students in that program took a class where they learned how to create and market a brand. How does the product taste?. You'll have to listen to find out. One thing is for sure, we are so happy to see this release and we hope for many more.
If Larrikin Bourbon Company is unfamiliar to you, then you are in good campany. Prior to this week's episode, we had never heard of this brand. Well, we thought we had never heard of them — but it turns out that we did. In 2022, Lawrenceburg Bourbon Company was founded, but after only a short about of time, the company rebranded to Larrikin. The distillery is proudly owned and operated by Greg Keeley who is a combat veteran with service in both Australian and U.S. navies. Greg's story is as unique as the whiskeys that they offer. This week, we taste and review two different Larrikin bottles: (1) Single Barrel High Wheat Rye Aged 8 years (2) Decade Cognac Finished Rye Whiskey Aged 10 years. Two very unique products with great age statements from a start up brand. You'll have to listen to hear our thoughts on these ones. Even though you are here for the whiskey talk, you'll be treated to an expose on Kenny's birthday week of bourbon! --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyTW: https://twitter.com/themashupkyMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!
For this Tuesday short, we decided to switch it up a bit and engaged with our extensive backlog of blinds. Our listener and friend (Evan) sent us a three blinds samples that were supposed to correspond with each of out palates. He also threw in an extra sample that was "just for fun." You'll have to listen to find out 1) which sample we liked the best 2) if we came anywhere close in our collectives guesses of age, proof, and distillate. These are some of our favorite episodes to record and we really appreciate how kind members of our audience like Evan put the time, thought, and effort in sending these to us. You've heard us talk about a lot of whiskey over the years, but MGP has had a special place in our hearts. Maker's Mark wood finishing series is something that we've become very fond of over the past few years. Once a brand that focused on consistency, Maker's has branched out and really pushed the limits when it comes to special releases. This expansion of the product line has been a welcomed change for most bourbon enthusiasts who have demanded more out of Maker's. This week, we taste and review the newest release in the Maker's Mark Wood Finishing Series: The Keepers Release. In January of this year, Old Forester brought back the "extra old" 117 series offering. This is the second time this style of bourbon has released since the start of the 117 series. Essentially, this bourbon is similar to Old Forester 1910 which is one of our favorites. The key differentiating factor is the time the bourbon rests in a secondary toasted oak cask. 1910 is aged for 7-9 month and "extra old" is aged in the secondary cask for up to 18 months. The result? Jack Daniel's has put out some ultra premium in recent years. Just when you thought it couldn't get any more premium, they recently released a 14-Year-Old Tennessee Whiskey clocking in at a massive 126.3 proof. You have to go all the way back to the early 1900s to find a release from Jack Daniel's that is this old. Many enthusiasts are dubbing this as an early favorite for whiskey of the year. But what do we think of it? You'll have to listen to find out. As always, there is spirited conversations, blinds, and a familiar female co-host. David Jennings aka Rare Bird 101 is back again! Talking turkey? Nope. This time around, David joins us to talk about his new whiskey company Washington Lafayette Revolutionary Spirits and the very first releases from the brand which are Caleb's Crossing Bourbon & Rye. These whiskeys will be exclusively available on Bourbonoutfitter.com on April 4th. But, what do they taste like? Perhaps more importantly, what is the story behind these bottles? Caleb's Crossing Bourbon is a blend of 6 and 7 year old straight whiskeys that is dual cask finished in Pineau des Charentes and Armagnac Casks and slow proofed to perfection. Caleb's Crossing Rye starts off as an 8 year 95/5 rye whiskey and is also finished in Pineau casks. Both of these whiskeys taste as unique as the story behind them. David takes the time to explain the painstaking process he went through to craft these whiskeys and delves further into the family story that made it all possible. While we have plenty of fun in this episode and talk a little Turkey and Raconteur, the majority of this fascinating conversation is focused on Caleb's Crossing and what David has in store for the future. We promise you will want to listen all the way to "the finish." --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyTW: https://twitter.com/themashupkyPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPVisit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your orderMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!

The cats are taking the court this evening to take on Tennessee in the Sweet 16. As excited as we are about the prospects of the Cats making the Elite 8, we are equally as excited about the new bottle we have to review this week. Thirteenth Colony Distilleries recently released their 113 Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished With Maple Wood Spirals to much acclaim. Although Thirteenth Colony has been around for quite a long time, they've skyrocketed in popularity over the past few years due to their double oaked bourbon releases. So how does this new Maple Finished bourbon taste? You''ll have to listen to find out and we guarantee you will be surprised with our take. This was a brand new offering of their own distillate from a brand who built their reputation on MGP. Fast forward two years and that distillate has now turned 8 years old! For this weeks short, we revisit another batch of this bourbon which is now a little older and has a bit more proof. On the first go around, we game this a try, try, buy. What will the verdict be this time around...you'll have to listen to find out.
Penelope Bourbon started in 2018 and quickly ascended to a place only few brands could dream of. They built a cult following and had great distribution. After only a few years as a start up whiskey company, they sold to MGP for over 200 million. We've reviewed Penelope products before on the podcast, but we've never had the pleasure of reviewing anything from their coveted Estate Collection. Thanks to a dedicated listener, we had the opportunity. We taste and review this 9 year old private select Bourbon from Penelope and talk about betting apps as well as where our podcast has been and where it's going. A whisky voted "worlds best rye" 3 years in a row was virtually unknown to us until Kenny's son started a new business venture. In a strange coincidence, the founding of his company lead to the discovery of this rye. Each batch of Millstone Dutch Single Rye Whisky is meticulously handcrafted using 100% rye mash and aged for a minimum of 100 months in new American oak casks. The distiller claims that the lengthy 11-day fermentation process provides a complexity of flavor that sets this whisky apart. Well, we'll be the judge of that. Join us for this short and we explore a rye whisky that takes us well outside of our comfort zones.
Mississippi bourbon and rye? Really? The answer is yes. For this week, a listener (Walker) was kind enough to send us two single barrel selections from the Crittenden Distillery in Kiln, Mississippi. With roots of the distillery dating all the back to 2016, you could imagine our surprise when we saw two 7 year cask strength products (bourbon and rye) that were distilled, aged, and bottled by this up and coming whiskey producer. in the midst of tasting. and reviewing this whiskey, Steven and Kenny got in a argument about friend chicken and much hilarity ensued. So join us this week if you want to laugh and find out about a small distillery in Mississippi that is putting out some great products. Cheers!
Woodford Reserve is one of the most iconic distilleries in the world. Despite the fact that they have an incredibly consistent set of products that are very popular, we've lamented that most of their whiskeys are 90.4 proof. Well...the newest release in the limited distillery series offerings is the highest proof whiskey that they've ever releaased! Clocking in at 139.4 proof, Woodford Reserve's Chocolate Whisper Redux comes in a 375ml bottle and costs $99.99. But how does it taste? And is it worth the hefty price tag that it carries? Often critical of Woodford products, our short review for this week might surprise you.
March Madness is upon us! A few episodes ago, we tasted and reviewed a bottle of the Club Blue small batch bourbon (Team White). Since that time, we visited Bespoken Spirits to learn more about the process and what goes into these NIL fundraising bourbons. In this episode, we taste and review a bottle of the Club Blue Team Blue Bourbon which is a high rye bourbon whiskey finished with ex-tequila and cherry wood staves. In order to eliminate all preconceived notions, we decided to fresh crack this bottle and blind it against an array of other different bourbons in order to give it the fairest shake possible. None of us had tasted this before blinding it. So what did we blind it against and what did we ultimately think about this more premium Club Blue bottle? You'll have to listen to find out. Hartfield & Co. is the only bourbon distillery to exist in Bourbon County since prohibition. Even though they've been in business for a little over 11 years, Hartfield and Co. recently made a lot of waves in the bourbon community when they released their 9 Year Old Family Reserve Bourbon. With most of the barrels clocking in at over 140 proof, this bourbon sold out instantly and only a handful of groups/store were able to select single barrels of it. Justin's House of Bourbon was one of the stores that selected a single barrel and they recently had a release event for this bottle. After the event concluded, we got to hang with Jeremy Buchanan (CEO/Master Distiller) and Mike Leek (VP of sales) from Hartfield & Co. for an interesting and engaging conversation. If you've ever wondered about Hartfield and Co., then you won't want to miss this episode. You'll get to hear about how this distillery came to be as well as how they approach crafting each of their bourbons. Not only did we taste and comment on the 9 year old family reserve bourbon, but we also tried their pre-prohibition style bourbon as well as their Old Bourbon County brand. As always, we had an excellent time recording with Jeremy and Mike. If you haven't been paying attention to Hartfield and Co., you are definitely going to want to check them out in the future as they are doing some incredible and amazing stuff. This is a wonderful conversation and we hope you enjoy listening about all things Hartfield and Co!
For the fifth time in the history of the podcast, we have a listener sponsored double blind. For this week, our listener and friend (Sanch D from right here in Kentucky) opened up his liquor cabinet and pulled out a double blind that would make Kenny blush. We love blinding on this show and Sanch gave us distillate that ALL came from the same distillery. In addition to the three blind samples that we taste and review, we also talk about March Madness and a bunch of other things going on in our lives. So join us this week as we test our palates with another fan sponsored double blind. Even though we were unable to guess the age of these blinds, the astute listener will notice that we picked up the fact that these all came from the same distillery very early on. Which distillery? You'll have to listen to find out. We had so much fund with this episode and we are thankful for our good buddy, Sanch! We have seen other companies blend bourbon and rye on purpose and some have done it on accident. Knob Creek is one of the latest brands to try their hand at blending a straight bourbon whiskey with a straight rye whiskey. Coming in at 113 proof, we taste and review this blend and provide our thoughts on it. For short a episode, the laughter is palpable. In this short, but action packed effort, Anthony revisits his love for Total Wine and the fellas get the giggles over a specific tasting note associated with the whiskey in our glass. EverNorth Spirits Co. was founded by Dan Shook and Sean Paisley about a year ago. While Dan and Sean are best known for their YouTube channel the "Bourbon Junkies," their new venture into sourcing and blending their own whiskey has been very positively received. Back in episode 184, we had a chance to hear a bit about EverNorth straight from Dan and Sean. Definitely give that one a listen if you missed it. Despite the fact that we knew about the brand, we don't have a ton of experience with their products. Thanks to an awesome listener (Adam L.), we got to taste and give our thoughts on three different EverNorth whiskeys. In addition to the standard whiskey related banter, we also give our thoughts on the slowing of the bourbon boom and other things happening in our lives. Should you be paying attention to what the Junkies are doing with EverNorth Spirits up in Michigan? We've tasted and reviewed a handful of Bulleit products in the past, but for this short, we taste and review their newest whiskey to hit the market. Bulleit Bottled in Bond is a new "very special bottling from the company" which boasted that the liquid comes from the 2017 distilling season. While the bottle does not carry an age statement, we surmise that it is at least 7 years old. But how does it taste and should you be hunting for this bottle? Despite being affiliated with Heaven Hill branding, John E. Fitzgerald was not an OG whiskey man. Instead, he was a Treasury agent. Legend has it that he would thieve whiskey from all the best barrels in the warehouse. This is the short story of how the Fitzgerald brand was born. Throughout history, Fitzgerald whiskeys have been a symbol of quality and highly sought after. Today, we taste and discuss the Fitzgerald inspired Larceny Barrel Proof bourbon (C924) and ponder how it stacks up against the batch we tried three years ago and others. The banter for this week includes special Valentine's Day plans, our collective response to a critical listener review, and a whole bunch of other fun stuff. Is Larceny Barrel Proof one of your favorites? If so, let us know what you like about it. Also, let us know if you agree with our thoughts after you listen. For this weeks short, we have the third batch of Raconteur Rye which is a blended rye whiskey collaboration brought to us by none other than David Jennings (Rare Bird 101) and the good folks over at the WoodWork Collective. You can go back and listen to our reviews of Batch # 1 (E157) and Batch # 2 (E180). The big change for the current batch is that it uses a Kentucky rye as the base whiskey instead of MGP. Coming in at 118 proof and still carrying a 7 year age statement, this bottle released this past Friday (Feb. 7th) and is already sold out. We thought we would be ahead of the curve, but it turns out we were just a little behind. So, what do we think of this batch? You won't want to miss our take on this one. As always, we appreciate James and DJ for providing us with a sample of this whiskey. For the fourth time in the history of the podcast, we have a listener sponsored double blind. For this week, our listener and friend (Ryan from North Carolina) was kind enough to send us some things to try. We love blinds -- especially when they come from our listeners. In addition to the five blind samples that Ryan sent us, he also sent individual presents for each of us. So join us this week as we test our palates with this fan sponsored double blind compliments of our friend from the great state of North Carolina. Will we be able to guess what's in our glasses? This weeks episode takes us back into time when we reviewed one of the most sought after releases from Woodford Reserve which is Woodford Double Double Oaked Bourbon (aka DDO). All the way back in episode 93, we reviewed DDO. Even though this used to be a distillery only release with limited distribution in Kentucky, it now is a nationwide release and it comes in a bigger bottle than what we are used to. We were lucky enough to secure a bottle and decided to crack it for this short. Is it worth the hype? The Castle & Key Distillery opened its doors in 2018 after years of careful planning and restoration. The castle like distillery was originally called the Old Taylor Distillery and was built in 1887 by none other than Colonel EH Taylor. The distillery grounds are amongst the most picturesque in the bluegrass which is why this has become on of the most popular places to tour. After initially releasing Vodka, Gin, and other spirits, the first bourbon was bottled in 2022 to much fanfare. Even though we never did an episode on it, we were in agreement that wasn't our favorite. Fast forward to this episode where we crack and review Castle & Key's Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon. Coming in at just 105 proof and being a true small batch whiskey (only 100 barrels in the blend), we were eager to see if this offering was better than the initial bourbon that was released. You'll have to listen to hear what we think. In this episode, Anthony talks about a barrel pick, Kenny treats us to some beatboxing, and Steven breaks out a special voice from the old west. Did you think we were going to take some time off from blinding after the best of 2024? Not a chance. One night about a month ago, Steven sent a message to our group text and asked if any of us have ever had the newer age stated 7 year Beam. After a skeptical response from Kenny, an idea was born. We decided to do a blind of 7 year old bourbons. The bottles in this blind are: Old Louisville 7 year bourbon/Premier Drams 7 year bourbon/Jim Beam 7 Year bourbon/Heaven Hill Bib 7 year/Nashville Barrel Co. 7 year bourbon/Old Ezra 7 Year. It's hard to believe that Chattanooga Whiskey has been around for almost 13 years. Each year, they release a "Founder's Anniversary Blend" which celebrates whiskey from their past, present, and future. Prideful Goat is a whiskey brand that was founded in 2020 by a popular podcast host and the head of the Houston Bourbon Society. Since then, the brand has grown exponentially and gained a pretty solid following. Thanks to one of our listeners (Ryan), we were able to try batch # 4 of Prideful Goat's 15 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Colonel E. H. Taylor, Jr. Barrel Proof Rye Whiskey is the 13th release to join the famed E. H. Taylor Collection from the Buffalo Trace Distillery. This rye is uncut and unfiltered. Even though little is known about the age or mashbill of this whiskey, it comes in at a whooping 126 proof. This release has been rumored for many years, but the fact that it is finally here is very exciting. However, the reviews on this one have been incredibly mixed with some expressing love and others describing it as lackluster. What do we think? You'll have to listen to find out. Redwood Empire gained notoriety early on by sourcing and bottling some excellent whiskey. Nestled in the heart of wine country on the Russian River in California, these distillers recently released 8 year cask strength single barrels of their own distillate.
