John talks about the growth of his palate over the past decade, the collaborative tasting and blending process at Peerless, and how the team decides which barrels become batches, single barrels, or special releases. He also shares the fun behind naming Peerless single barrels, discusses the success of the High Rye Bourbon, and explains why the distillery's sweet mash process, non-chill filtration, and focus on mouthfeel remain such important parts of the Peerless identity. The conversation also turns to a major milestone for the distillery: the release of Henry Kraver's 10-Year Bourbon. John shares what it was like tasting through roughly 200 barrels to select the final group for the release and why working with whiskey he remembers filling and rolling years ago made the experience especially meaningful. The nose is immediately striking — spearmint, pine forest, citrus zest, and dried orange. The palate is exceptionally thick and viscous, carrying the mint and zest through with clove, pine nut, and a cooling quality that gives way to a long, peppery oak finish. Available at New Riff Distillery and to whiskey club members. *(00:17:00)* - Little Book Chapter 10 "All the Wiser" 2026: Freddie Noe's tenth Little Book chapter is an homage to the beloved Chapter 3 "The Road Home," blending 11-year Knob Creek, 14-year Basil Hayden, 10-year Booker's, 9-year Baker's, and a 4-year Jim Beam finished in sherry and toasted casks — all uncut at 122.6 proof. The nose is rich and mahogany-dark with vanilla, nuttiness, and a subtle sherry influence. The palate is decadent: dark Luxardo cherry, chocolate, snicker-like nuttiness, molasses, and a long, spicy, sizzling finish that simply refuses to leave. On the palate, a perfectly cooked caramel apple pie character develops with a noticeable fruitiness that runs a bit off the typical Booker's nutty profile — finishing with warmth and spice. Rejoining Todd Ritter in the Bourbon Road bar, the duo wastes no time getting back to business. To celebrate the return of whiskey to Jim's glass, they've lined up a heavy-hitting "review show" featuring four distinct expressions that span the spectrum of rye and bourbon, followed by a chaotic science experiment at the end. The tasting kicks off with a unique offering from the Castle & Key Experimental Series Rye. This release is finished in Vino de Naranja (Orange Wine) barrels and clocks in at a stout 115.8 proof. It immediately surprises the hosts with vivid notes of chocolate orange and cupcake icing, delivering a "pop rocks" sensation on the palate that balances sweetness with a spicy finish. Next, they shift gears to a historic brand with the Old Overholt 12-Year Rye. A 117-proof Monongahela-style rye, this bottle offers a stark contrast to the first pour. Jim and Todd discuss its dignified, "elderly" profile, noting deep flavors of leather, dried cranberry, and peppery spice. Sugarlands Distilling Company is nestled in the foothills of Gatlinburg, TN. Even though they are a company that originally focused on moonshine, they have been getting noticed for their unique rye whiskey. Roaming Man is a cask-strength pot distilled rye whiskey, made from locally sourced grains and crafted in the largest copper pot still in the United States. Even though the first release of roaming man was in 2017, we had never heard of this company until our good friend Hector sent us some bottles. In this episode, we taste and review the cask strength version of this whiskey and the limited release 10 year version. With a mashbill of 51% rye, 45% white corn, and 4% malted barely, we can honestly say that this whiskey is unique. But would we pass, try, or buy? Pappy 13:When first approached by Buffalo Trace, Julian III was honored, but not immediately interested. He had ample bourbon aging, but the concern was for future reserves, since by this time, bourbon was increasing in popularity. Buffalo Trace bought the W.L. Weller label in 1999 and had been making the bourbon with nearly the same recipe as Pappy's. The transition was easy. As of May 2002, Buffalo Trace has produced the Van Winkle bourbons, using Pappy's exact recipe. This change allows Old Rip Van Winkle to maintain their strict quality standards while producing more barrels for future enjoyment.Michter's 10: The 10 Year Rye expression reflects the exceptional results of uncompromising craftsmanship and Kentucky's unrivaled climate for aging outstanding whiskey. Often much older than the age statement on the label, only a select few barrels age with the elegance required for inclusion in these highly limited releases.

Lux Row Distillers recently announced the release of Old Ezra 7 Year Straight Rye Whiskey. But what does that mean? Well, Old Ezra 7-Year Rye features two rye mashbills (51% rye whiskey and 95% rye whiskey), is aged a full seven years and is bottled at full proof (114 proof, or 57% ABV). 3,000 six pack cases were released and this is at a suggested retail price of $79.99. BUT: Paul Miller is not our typical guest. For one thing, he's a self-described conservative patriot. He's a professor of International Affairs at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He worked for George W. Bush. And he's a Christian (a Baptist to be specific). From that perspective, he mounts an unflinching case against Christian nationalism in his book The Religion of American Greatness: What's Wrong with Christian Nationalism.We don't see eye to eye on everything with Paul, but we're definitely on the same page about the seriousness and the urgency of this movement within American Christianity that has taken over an entire party and is actively threatening to overthrow American democracy, or as Paul calls it, the liberal experiment of self-governance. It's important stuff, and people on opposite sides of a lot of political and moral issues should be talking to each other about it.
