This week on The Fred Minnick Show presented by BAXUS, Fred's guest is country music artist Drew Holcomb. Holcomb is an artist who, with his band the Neighbors, has released multiple albums, beginning with 2005's Washed in Blue. He and his wife Ellie recently released a single titled, “Memory Bank.” During the show, they talk about music, songwriting, backstage menus, grief, the long, lost Heaven Hill 6-year and more, all while sipping Sweetens Cove 2022, New Riff 8-Year Rye, a Club Marzipan barrel pick from Woodinville, Willett 10-Year Barrel Pick, Parker's Heritage of Hope and a mystery whiskey. Pappy 13:When first approached by Buffalo Trace, Julian III was honored, but not immediately interested. He had ample bourbon aging, but the concern was for future reserves, since by this time, bourbon was increasing in popularity. Buffalo Trace bought the W.L. Weller label in 1999 and had been making the bourbon with nearly the same recipe as Pappy's. The transition was easy. As of May 2002, Buffalo Trace has produced the Van Winkle bourbons, using Pappy's exact recipe. This change allows Old Rip Van Winkle to maintain their strict quality standards while producing more barrels for future enjoyment.Michter's 10: The 10 Year Rye expression reflects the exceptional results of uncompromising craftsmanship and Kentucky's unrivaled climate for aging outstanding whiskey. Often much older than the age statement on the label, only a select few barrels age with the elegance required for inclusion in these highly limited releases.
On this episode of The Fred Minnick Show presented by BAXUS, Fred's guest is pitmaster icon Pat Martin. Martin founded Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint in Nolensville, Tennessee, in 2006, focusing on West Tennessee-style whole hog barbecue. During the episode, Fred and Pat pair whiskey with all sorts of barbecue, from wings to brisket, while talking about how Martin got into barbecuing, hogs, the art of making brisket, Marines, candy and more. Along the way, they pair the protein up with Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye, Jack Daniel's Twice Barreled Rye, Michter's 10 Year Rye, Russell's Reserve 9 Year Barrel Pick, Buffalo Trace Prohibition Collection Spiritus Frumenti and a 28-Year-Old, 162-proof Obtanium Canadian Whiskey. Many paper towels fell victim during the feast. New Riff Distillery is celebrating 10 years in the biz this summer. Located in Northern Kentucky, we've been big fans of this distillery since they opened in 2014. For this week's short, we taste and review two of their new rye whiskeys: New Riff 8 Year Rye Whiskey and the 2024 release of Silver Grove Barrel Proof Rye Whiskey. We try to pack as much whiskey goodness into each short as possible. Will these two releases from the Riff be as good as some of the other things we've tasted from them? You'll have to give us a listen to find out. Do you like New Riff products? This week, we head out toward Bardstown (and also north of the border) to bring you a review of Very Olde St. Nick Ancient Cask 8 Year Old Rye Whiskey. Though the label is pretty old, the distillery is actually quite new. Since 2018, Preservation Distillery has focused on sourcing very unique stocks of whiskey and bottling it under their brands which include: Very Olde St. Nick, Pure Antique, Rare Perfection, and Wattie Boone. Chances are you've seen these bottles in your market, but should you pull the trigger? You'll have to listen to find out. Vacation season is in full swing which means that we may or may not have all the fellas for each episode, but we will always do our best to bring you the best content possible. In this episode, we talk recipes, exploding grills, and Kenny pulls one of the most unexpected blinds in Mash Up history. -------------------------- Socials IG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupky FB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupky TW: https://twitter.com/themashupky Partnership(s) Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUP Visit https://woodworkcollective.shop and enter code MASHUP for a 15% discount on your order Music: All the Fixings by Zachariah Hickman Thank you so much for listening!
As you all likely know, we have a special spot in our hearts for Bulleit, except the single malt (just a huge mistake). So, when we saw the 12 year Rye, we had to give it a shot. The only major change to this rye whiskey was over doubling the age. It is quite a smooth sipper with some good flavors, but does it hold up to the higher price tag than Bulleit Rye?Whiskey: Bulleit 12 Year RyePrice: $50Proof: 92Age: 12 yearsWhiskey Talk: Quite the rabbit hole of episodes, we talk about cars, politics and the bullet train from Los Angeles to VegasLinks:Email: whiskeybizpodcask@gmail.comIG/TikTok/Twitch: @whiskeybizpodcaskYoutube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs16q1Q7hF0m8N3O1YY4gMwPatreon: www.patreon.com/whiskeybizpodcaskMagic Mind: https://www.magicmind.com/whiskeybiz code: WHISKEYBIZ20Promo Codes: podcask5 @ cwspirits.com and empirejerky.comZencastr Code and Link: https://zen.ai/xi20uzdM_kVx_FHps0eaNuSMjrbmF7i5JsWt1yJ37KM

It may have been a week for you, dear listener, but for us, it's been a long time since this episode was recorded. Almost two weeks ago, I witnessed the first in-person drawing for single barrels from the Buffalo Trace Single Barrel Select program, and it got me wondering about how the single barrel programs could be changed (for the better). We talk about that before getting into the first review (as far as we know) of the Wilderness Trail 7-Year Bottled in Bond Rye Whiskey, and I think you might know where this is going! NFL All Pro Jeremy Reaves has been through much adversity, playing five years in the NFL and making the practice squad. This year, Jeremy made both the Pro Bowl and the All Pro Team as the Special Teams player for the Washington Commanders. Fred and Jeremy sip Michter's 10 year rye and Michter's Toasted, while discussing who makes the Super Bowl and what the trash talk is like in the NFL.
Eight perfectly aged barrels, hand-picked for the crisp, savory zing that distinguishes a truly superlative rye, were commingled to create this unique limited release - the first rye to bear the Nelson family name since 1909. We were lucky enough to get our hands on our bottle to review. FYI - this one is 108.4 proof and at an MSRP of $299. Cheers! We were raised in the church, and now it's our turn to parent our kids and figure out how to pass on a healthy spiritual journey to them. We don't really know how to do it, but we know we don't want to do it in ways that we were raised on in the church. Does that sound familiar? Bekah McNeel wrote Bringing Up Kids When the Church Lets You Down from exactly that perspective. In this episode, we chat with Bekah about her experiences growing up in the church, working in the church, being let down by the church, and then trying to figure out how she's going to raise her kids in the church. So many exvangelical parents have that same experience, trying to navigate faith and spirituality with our kids in a way that isn't manipulative, that offers choices, and that doesn't have to be deconstructed as they age. Our second political episode ever! Does it have anything to do with the elections occurring next week? You bet! Did we invite this guest on the show to trash nationalism some more? Sure did! BUT: Paul Miller is not our typical guest. For one thing, he's a self-described conservative patriot. He's a professor of International Affairs at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He worked for George W. Bush. And he's a Christian (a Baptist to be specific). From that perspective, he mounts an unflinching case against Christian nationalism in his book The Religion of American Greatness: What's Wrong with Christian Nationalism. We don't see eye to eye on everything with Paul, but we're definitely on the same page about the seriousness and the urgency of this movement within American Christianity that has taken over an entire party and is actively threatening to overthrow American democracy, or as Paul calls it, the liberal experiment of self-governance. It's important stuff, and people on opposite sides of a lot of political and moral issues should be talking to each other about it. So that's what we do here.A couple books mentioned in the interview are:Mere Civility by Teresa BejanThe Case for Nationalism by Rich LowryThe beverage we sample is Willett Family Estate Small Batch 4 Year Rye. The beverage tasting is at 5:11. To skip to the main segment, go to 7:00.Want to support us? Bob and Brad kick off a mini-series of three films by director Rob Reiner with a Halloween special: his 1990 thriller Misery. They discuss some killer performances by Kathy Bates and James Caan, as well as how Reiner's comic timing is a huge benefit to making an effective suspense thriller. Meanwhile, they try a rye that was exclusively released to the Ohio and Pennsylvania markets: Old Overholt 11-Year. We'd hoped that Beam Suntory would continue releasing this, albeit in a limited capacity, but it looks like this was a one-time release. given how difficult-to-find this whiskey will become, is it worth the price? It has been far too long since we last did a whiskey from the Wild Turkey Distillery and as expected, it did not disappoint. Russell's Reserve 6 Year Rye is a nice, easy sipper with enough flavor to make a rye drinker happy. It also is a great gateway from Bourbon to Rye. Cheers,Scott, Jake, & MichaelBourbon Lens About Dan McKee: Born and bred in Indiana, Michter's Master Distiller Dan McKee moved to Kentucky to pursue his dream of making whiskey. He began his career in the bourbon industry as a Distillery Operator at Jim Beam Distillery in Clermont, Kentucky. After two years of hands-on experience making some of the industry's leading bourbons and ryes, he was promoted to Distillery Supervisor at Booker Noe Distillery, where he worked for seven years. At that distillery, Dan reported to Pam Heilmann and gained valuable experience in all aspects of whiskey distilling. After being brought to Michter's Distillery by Ms. Heilmann, he played an integral role in assisting with the construction of the company's new Shively Distillery, and along with Ms. Heilmann and Andrea Wilson he built the company's current production team. Dan has continued to expand the company's operations with his work to bring Michter's Fort Nelson distillery online with its legendary pot stills and cypress wood fermenters from the original Michter's Pennsylvania operation. With his expertise in grain, Dan has played a key role in working with our local farmers to coordinate the planting schedules on Michter's 205-acre parcel in Springfield, Kentucky. Having graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University, Dan serves as Michter's technical representative on the Kentucky Distillers' Association. About Andrea Wilson: Andrea is Michter's Master of Maturation as well as its Executive Vice President - General Manager. As Michter's Master of Maturation, Andrea manages barrel specifications, barrel procurement, heat cycling and temperature monitoring during aging, tracking maturation of barrels, whiskey filtration in preparation for bottling, and innovation to continue to improve the aging process. Becoming the first woman to ever serve as Chair of the Kentucky Distillers' Association is among the many honors achieved by Andrea during her illustrious career. Andrea is admired for her accomplishments in the whiskey industry and has been involved in all aspects of making Michter's whiskeys. Before joining Michter's, Andrea spent over ten years with Diageo in various whiskey related positions including Director of Distillation and Maturation, North America - overseeing both the U.S. and Canadian distillation and maturation programs. Prior to her departure from Diageo she was the company's Director of Whiskey Strategy for North American operations. She holds a Master of Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Louisville, and she has been highlighted in the KET television documentary, Kentucky Bourbon Tales: Distilling the Family Business. About Michter's Process: CooperageWe Pay Careful Attention to the Wood Used in the Construction of Our Barrels. We are specifying wood that has been thoroughly and properly dried, sometimes for as long as 18-48 months, in order to enhance the natural properties of the wood which allow for better flavor and to reduce the levels of tannin imparted to the whiskey. Toasting & CharringThe Barrels Made to Our Specifications Are Toasted Before Charring. Toasting a barrel before charring helps to make the wood's sugars more accessible. These sugars caramelize and concentrate to form the "red line" in the barrel stave cross-sections due to the heat, ultimately adding more flavor and color to the whiskey as it seeps through the char to the caramel red line. Low Entry ProofWe Enter Our Rye and Bourbon Into Barrels at 103 Proof (51.5% ABV). Although the typical industry entry proof is 125 proof, we believe that the lower 103 proof (51.5% ABV) level – which was historically regarded as the gold standard in Kentucky – allows for the concentrated sugars in the toasted and charred wood to dissolve more readily into the distillate as it cycles in and out of the barrel. Even though the lower entry proof yields fewer bottles per barrel, we believe that the smooth flavor and richer mouthfeel makes it worth it. Heat CyclingWe Heat Cycle Our Barrels During Their Aging. The more often whiskey expands and contracts ("cycles") soaking in and then out of the wood of the barrel, the more flavor it absorbs from the sugars in the caramelized red line of the wood. Heat cycling is an uncommon practice used to raise and lower the temperatures in the barrel warehouses to induce extra cycles within a given year. This practice is extremely costly because heat cycling significantly increases the "Angel Share" evaporation during aging, but in most cases enhances the flavor of the whiskey. Chill FilterAt our distillery, we chill filter all of our whiskeys instead of using carbon filtration that can strip out flavor and aroma. Moreover, rather than use the one size fits all approach of many distillers, we use the different filtration mediums and techniques best suited to each of our individual whiskey offerings – despite it being time consuming and costly – to highlight each expression's best qualities. By now everyone knows we belong to the Local Lounge in Mt. Holly, NJ, which is managed by frequent guest host Anders the Master Mixologist. But not everyone knows that he got a chance to pick a barrel of WhistlePig of his very own, bottles of which are available to members and patrons alike! So, we decided to sit down with Anders to find out how it all went down, and then taste it to see how good a barrel strength single barrel can actually be. And if you think you know who really owns the whiskey in this bottle, prepare to have your mind blown. Faith No More's Billy Gould joins the show and shares his passion for Serbian Brandy. Billy starts his own brand, Yebiga, a Serbian brandy called Rakija made in Croatia. In turn, Fred offers up some rare rye whiskeys, including WhistlePig Boss Hog and Michter's 10 year. All the while, the two become instant friends over good drink and solve the problems. Bill sheds light on something Fred knows little about—Serbian Drinking Customs. Little did he know, grandmas in Croatia drink two shots a day to help them live long and healthy lives. Could that be applied in the United States?

In this week's episode, we researched more about the Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey lineup, which holds roughly 12 products in their portfolio. Many are familiar with the beloved Willett Straight Rye Whiskey or Old Bardstown. On this special bonus episode of The Fred Minnick Show, Adam Hambrick is the guest. The country singer-songwriter is a Capitol Records artist who has written songs for artists like Dan + Shay, Justin Moore, Lindsay Ell, the Eli Young Band and others. In 2019, his solo single "Rockin' All Night Long" hit No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. His latest EP, Give Her a Rose, was released in December 2020. On the show, Adam and Fred talk songwriting, Nashville, Elvis Presley, whiskey, cellphones and plenty more. Whiskeys tasted: Angel's Envy Finished in Tawny Port Casks (21:16) Old Forester Rye (22:49) Kentucky Owl 11 Year Rye (22:49) Michter's 20 Year (38:09) EPISODE SUMMARY Fred and Adam touch on a number of points, such as: Fred starts the show by noting this bonus interview with Adam Hambrick happened in person, pre-Covid. Adam talks about the writing of the Lindsay Ell hit, "I Don't Love You," which he co-wrote, and how he got into writing songs. Adam talks about singing and how he's been singing since age 3, followed by his shift into songwriting - and then back into being a recording artist. Adam says it's "the Wild West" in terms of putting out music in modern times. Adam's impression of Will Ferrell impersonating Harry Caray is a highlight at around the 17:36 mark. Hambrick says he's a slow sipper and details his relationship with whiskey. Fred then breaks down Adam's palate by asking his food and flavor preferences. The verdict: Sweet tooth - but not too Adam: "I'm sneaky old. I've got two kids at home and a mortgage." Adam explains how songwriters do what they do and tells Fred he essentially does something similar with his whiskey and bourbon writing. They talk about how modern phones have become a constant distraction and shortened our attention spans, changing how we think and how we process information. Adam admits this knowledge has given him a "healthy disdain" for his phone. Fred notes that he is in the "eyeballs" business - attracting people's eyes - while Adam is in the "earballs" business, drawing chuckle from the songwriter. Of the Michter's 20-year-old bourbon, Adam says, "Oh my goodness. Holy cow." That about sums it up. They talk "special occasion" whiskeys. Fred says, "You know what's a special occasion to me? Waking up in the morning." On the way out, Fred and Adam decide to "solve some world problems." At that point, the conversation turns back to how cell phones have taken over our world. Adam notes that positive reinforcement on social media offers a hit of dopamine, which makes it a literal addiction. But then they talk about bologna sandwiches and mayonnaise. QUOTABLES Asked if he considers himself more singer or songwriter, Adam responds, "It's kind of all one river. When I'm writing songs, I'm always writing for myself in some way. And sometimes those songs don't fit the project, they don't fit what you're going to put out, so you just leave it open-handed and, like, if this fits for somebody else, by all means please record it." Bob and Brad revisit three films celebrating their tenth anniversary, and kick things off with Martin Scorsese's 2010 effort Shutter Island. This genre exercise received positive reviews, but has become much more appreciated by the general public in the decade since its release. Bob and Brad break down the ethical implications of the movie, as well as where this "tortured guy with a dead wife" performance from Leonardo DiCaprio ranks among his catalog. Meanwhile, they try Willett Family Estate 4-Year Rye, a hard-to-find favorite among collectors. Film & Whiskey Podcast. Michter's Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey 10 Year Old | Whisky Review | Whiskey Tasting Welcome back to the Speakeasy Bourbon Club. What a find, thanks to My Friends Bottle Shop. Cracking open this Michter's Single Barrel 10 Year Rye is a treat. I know this is not going to be a one drink review but at MSRP I don’t feel guilty. In the glass I see a molasses tint and cant wait to bring it to the nose. Immediately I noticed a lack of ethanol but the presence of herbal spice, butterscotch and dried banana. On the palate, I get hit with more butterscotch, spice and dried fruit but this time a bit of orange or orange peel. On the finish I see what I was missing and its spearmint. I’m getting all the other flavors but this one will open up and allow the flavors to play together very well. A decanter or cube of ice will make this bottle a favorite. Cheers Thank you for taking the time to listen to the Birdies & Bourbon Podcast for all things PGA Tour, golf, gear, bourbon and mixology. The Speakeasy Bourbon Club Special Episode: Basil Hayden's 10 Year Rye Tasting Notes and Review. The Speakeasy Bourbon Club Special Episode: Basil Hayden's 10 Year Rye Tasting Notes and Review. Basil Hayden's 10 Year Rye is an easy invitation into the Rye whiskies. Its bottled at 80 proof and fairly underwhelming to the nose. I’m not getting that ethanol punch so you can really nose this one pretty deep. What you will get is a corny sweetness and rye bread notes. Theres a touch of oak and little char to round out the nose. You can tell this is going to be an easy drinker at first smell. The taste gives a watery mouth feel but a buttery sweetness does come through at the end. At $60 theres not much value here for me but as previously mentioned this is an easy introduction to Rye family. Cheers

Steve sits down with Tanya Priest and Nate Hale to try a fairly newer whiskey from an unlikely state of the U.S. We are sampling the Whistle Pig 12 Year Rye thanks to Tanya and it's an interesting bottle that the table is a bit torn about as they dive into the rye. We enjoy the Sublimes Oscuro that is being made by AJ Fernandez, while it may or not go well with the whiskey. Sit down, pour a drink, light up, and join us in the garage. Master Distiller Dave Pickerell joins Ben and Steve to drop some serious whiskey science at our WhistlePig Old World Barrel Premiere. This episode is a true treat for whiskey lovers and whiskey nerds alike. Dave Pickerell, the man who made our private cask of WhistlePig Old World 12 Year Rye, came in to talk to the club about his history in distilling, the Old World project and all things WhistlePig. Dave has been described as the Johnny Appleseed of American whiskey and has been a key figure in reviving brown spirits and craft distilling. Specifically, Dave is one of a few folks responsible for bringing rye back to the forefront of the whiskey world. As huge rye lovers, we were super excited to have Dave sit down with us to taste through the entire WhistlePig lineup and share his stories and vast distilling knowledge. Dave gets into topics ranging from reviving George Washington's distillery at Mount Vernon to predictions on the future of the whiskey industry and why, "Rye ought to be like a good first date." Dave also brought along some of WhistlePig's brand new, "Bottled in Barn," FarmStock whiskey -- their first to contain juice distilled at the WhistlePig farm in Vermont. Grab a bottle of our WhistlePig Old World 12 Year from our Shop and sip along with us as we go deep with Dave Pickerell.
Steve and Ben sit down to pop open the latest Beast Masters Club Barrel - A WhistlePig Old World 12 Year Rye. This 12 year American Rye was finished in a custom blend of Old World wine casks. We created a blend of finishes that we felt best complimented the smooth spiciness of this gorgeous rye: 80% Madeira, 10% Port, 10% Sauternes. We think you're going to love it. Pick up a bottle in our web shop and play along at home!
