Britain's largest rewilding landscape launches as new charity Vast Highlands initiative to boost nature, re-peopling, rural livelihoods and economic opportunities including sustainable timber, fishing, farming, wildlife tourism The UK's largest rewilding landscape, Affric Highlands, has launched as an independent charity with the aim of restoring nature across more than 200,000 hectares of the central Highlands over the next 30 years, to benefit nature, climate and people. New Affric Highlands initiative to boost nature The community-focused initiative brings together a broad partnership of landowners, local people and others to restore native woodland, peatland and riverside habitats, and boost wildlife across a linked network of landholdings stretching from Loch Ness to the west coast. It will rewild the landscape and allow nature to connect and thrive across large areas - creating social and economic benefits for communities, supporting re-peopling, and tackling the climate and nature emergencies. Affric Highlands will work with local landowners to strengthen land-based rural livelihoods and nature-based economic opportunities, making the region a hub for sustainable timber, fishing, farming, venison and wildlife tourism. This will include the creation of a network of businesses benefitting from rewilding. "Affric Highlands is a community focused vision of hope. It's hugely inspiring to be setting out as a new charity on this ambitious 30-year journey to take large-scale nature recovery to a new level," said Affric Highlands executive director Stephanie Kiel. "We want to create new opportunities and real benefits for local landowners, communities and rural economies, so nature, people and livelihoods can all thrive together." Restoring habitats will boost biodiversity and benefit wildlife including golden eagles, red squirrels, black grouse, mountain hares, salmon, trout, ospreys and otters. The initiative will potentially cover over 700 square miles stretching from Loch Ness to Kintail in the west, and encompassing Glens Cannich, Urquhart, Affric, Moriston and Shiel. The region is stunningly beautiful but largely ecologically damaged, with much land degraded following centuries of deforestation and overgrazing. The globally unique Caledonian forest has been reduced to isolated fragments. Damage to peatlands means they are emitting rather than absorbing carbon. Lochs and rivers are depleted of salmon. This damage to the natural world means the region now supports fewer people than it could - limiting people's opportunities for sustainable land-based jobs, and undermining sustainable agriculture which depends on functioning natural processes. Affric Highlands began work in September 2021, when it also became the ninth member of Rewilding Europe's network of large, iconic rewilding landscapes across Europe. This followed the initiative's first three years of work as Trees for Life's East-West Wild project, during which the charity carried out extensive preparation and local consultation. Affric Highlands has since operated as a joint venture led by Trees for Life with support and advice from Rewilding Europe. The initiative has grown so successfully that it has now been launched as an independent charity, to take forward and upscale its pioneering work. Affric Highlands' growing partnership already consists of a broad coalition of 19 landowners, covering an area of over 58,000 hectares within the vast landscape. These separate landholdings - which have all signed a memorandum of understanding - are making their own decisions on what nature recovery interventions are right for them, with the Affric Highlands team providing guidance and also support for seeking funding. Native woodlands and peatlands are being restored to boost biodiversity and absorb carbon. Riverwoods are being created by returning woodland to the banks of upland streams and rivers to provide vital shade, nutrients and shelter for Scotland's struggling Atl...

Doch was steckt wirklich hinter diesen Geschichten? Waarom trainen in Kenia?
Scottish Island Adventures - Skye - with host Coinneach Macleod, the Hebridean Baker and guest Sarah Cruickshank The Isle of Skye Skye is the largest of the Islands belonging to the Inner Hebrides at 50 miles long. The Isle's picturesque scenery attracts visitors from all over the world who can take on its many hill walks and engage in all kinds of outdoor activities from Kayaking in the beautiful Lochs to spotting protected wildlife species such as the Sea Eagle or Red Deer. Skye has a rich, vibrant history as the site of both the MacDonald and MacLeod Clan castles, as well as having played a role in the heavily romanticised Jacobite Rebellion led by Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745. Today, the island has a thriving culture scene with plenty of art to take in as well as lots of restaurants, bars, and distilleries to show off the best of Scottish cuisine. SkyeSkins SkyeSkins was originally founded by a couple, Clive and Lydia, forty years ago in response to local farmers who would leave their sheep skins to waste. In the time that has passed, SkySkins has become a tanner, maker, and supplier of quality sheepskins, home furnishings, and sustainable clothing. You can visit their tannery and showroom in Waternish as well as a variety of other attractions including a seasonal Yurt cafe, and a boutique shop in Skye's capital Portree. Cafe Cuil The story of Cafe Cuil began in Hackney, East London, in 2019 when Isle of Skye native Clare Coghill first opened her Hebridean-inspired cafe. After returning to her homeland, Coghill brought Cafe Cuil with her to Calbost, a town on the west-side of the Island. The cafe uses locally sourced, seasonal produce to create its own spin on brunch and lunch. Ellis O'Connor Ellis O'Connor is a Scottish artist specialising in contemporary landscape drawings and paintings. She produces most of her work on-site which allows her to incorporate the environment and extreme weather into the art as it is created. As well as using traditional mediums such as oil paints, O'Connor's landscape works have featured natural substances such as sand or dried seaweed to bring in elements of the natural world. The big UK trip is almost here, and we're prepping for the Edinburgh Castle Tattoo with a visit to the National Western Stock Show, and the Scottish Highland Cattle show. Those bagpipes and tartans get us every time, no matter what the event. In today's podcast, we grabbed a moment in the cattle barns with Audra Hall of Clearwater Spring Highlands in Brighton, Colorado. Audra was somewhere between the fluff and fold cycle that goes on in a mad rush before the annual show and sale. Elara was mesmerized by the flow of Highland Cattle hair in the big barn fans (Have you ever seen the winds moving over a lush grassy plain a few months after a generous rainy season? It was like that.). And then bagpipes, too. With all of that glorious color, culture and sound – well,, a more fitting preparation for next month's visit we couldn't imagine. We'll be posting all along on the trip, and we hope you join us on our adventure back to the homeland of many of our most important agricultural breeds. What do we call it? Tartan and Tweed Tour 2023. The Rose and Thistle Tour. The Borderland Bonanza. The possibilities are endless, and we hope you send in suggestions for naming our adventure!
In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we caught up with Jop Kind from Hubrecht Institute to talk about his work on single cell DamID, EpiDamID, and Lamina Associated Domains (LADs). Jop Kind started out developing single cell DamID (scDamID), based on the DamID technique. First, this technique was adapted to a microscopic readout which enabled them to follow the localisation of chromatin domains after cell division. Next, the lab expanded this technique into the NGS space and created genome-wide maps of nuclear lamina Interactions in single human cells. Since LADs are in a heterochromatic chromatin context, the lab expanded scDamID into the epigenetic space. They first combined it with a transcriptional readout. Later-on they developed EpiDamID, a method to target a diverse set of chromatin types by taking advantage of the binding specificities of single-chain variable fragment antibodies, engineered chromatin reader domains, and endogenous chromatin-binding proteins.
This week's guest is Scottish International, Ken Kennedy from Orkney. I have wanted to fish Orkney for sometime and decided to give Ken a call to find out more. He tells us how to get there, best time of the year to fish, flies to use and which Lochs are best, such as Harray and Swanney. Enjoy!
Have you heard of shapeshifters? What about carnivorous equines that drag their captives deep into the ocean never to be seen again? Join Carly and Tom for this week's episode to learn about the Kelpie. A water horse spirit of Scottish myth, they are capable of shape-shifting. They inhabit the Lochs and pools of Scotland. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A hundredth of a bit of extra entropy, published by Adam Scherlis on December 24, 2022 on LessWrong. There are two ways to calculate the amount of information in one term of a continued fraction: The entropy of the Gauss-Kuzmin distribution is about 3.4325 bits. Twice the logarithm of the Khinchin-Lévy constant is about 3.4237 bits. These differ by about 0.0088 bits. It took me a while to figure out why they were different at all, and now I'm surprised by how close they are. Continued fractions π is about 3. Actually, 3 is a bit too small, by about 1/7. Actually, 7 is a bit too small, by about 1/15. Actually, 15 is a bit a lot too small, by almost 1/1. But the 1 in the denominator is a tiny bit too small, by about 1/292. We can keep doing this forever, and get an expression like: π=3+17+115+11+1292+⋱ This is pretty useful for things like finding rational approximations. We can drop that 1/(292+...), since it's really small, and get the excellent approximation π≈355113. Or we can drop the 1/(15+...) and get the rougher approximation π≈227. In general, the continued fraction for a real number r is of the form r=a0+1a1+1a2+1a3+⋱ where the terms an are positive integers (except a0 which is an arbitrary integer). This is infinite for any irrational number; for a rational number, it stops after some number of terms, e.g. 355113=3+17+115+11 Truncating a continued fraction is the optimal way to approximate a real number with a rational: it gives a better approximation than anything with a smaller denominator. Continued fractions show up every now and then in different ways, but the approximation property is usually how I end up bumping into them. The Gauss-Kuzmin distribution Suppose we choose a random real number (say, uniformly between 0 and 1). The probability that the nth term is equal to k converges to p(k)=−log2(1−1(1+k)2) as n∞. This is the Gauss-Kuzmin distribution. I think it's also true that the fraction of k's in the continued fraction converges to p(k). The entropy of this distribution is just ∑∞k=1−p(k)log2(p(k)), which is pretty quick to compute out to a few digits of accuracy in your favorite programming language. It works out to about 3.4325 bits, so that's how much information there is in the term an, for large n. Lochs's theorem Lochs's theorem: For almost all real numbers, asymptotically, the accuracy of the continued fraction improves by a factor of eπ2/6ln2≈10.731 per term. This is amusingly close to 10, which is how much the accuracy of decimals improves per digit. You get log210 bits of information from a digit of decimal, so this means that you get π26(ln2)2≈3.4237 bits of information per term of a continued fraction, asymptotically. The difference So what gives? Why aren't those the same?? Hint: It's not about how you take the limits to get these two things, as I initially thought. Eventually, the error in both numbers above will drop so far that 0.0088 bits looks enormous by comparison, so we can just think about the behavior after a bajillion terms and not worry about the fact that both theorems are asymptotic. The answer, unless I'm mistaken: The Gauss-Kuzmin distribution is a marginal distribution, so its entropy is the entropy of the nth term if you don't know anything about previous terms. The Khinchin-Lévy constant is the entropy of the conditional distribution; it measures the entropy of the nth term if you know every previous term. These are different because -- evidently -- different terms of the continued fraction are correlated, even for a generic real number, even in the limit of large n!I implicitly assumed that the correlation would tend to zero, and barely noticed I was making this assumption. It seems that if you know the first bajillion terms of a continued fraction, you actually have a tiny amount of information about the bajillion-pl...

All three and their stalwart crews were involved in the operation to save bulk carrier Portland Bay after it lost power in stormy weather last month.Pacific Encounter's time in Sydney will also be of economic benefit to the city with local marine engineering and technical services coming on board and more than half a million kilograms of locally sourced produce being loaded to begin the ship's cruising program.Special thanks to Listener Garry in Sydney who sent in some incredible images of Encounter alongside in Circular Quay.Viking celebrates 25 years of award-winning explorationOn 5 Aug 23, Viking is celebrated the company's 25th anniversary. To commemorate the anniversary, Viking has released a new video message from Chairman Torstein Hagen as he reflects on the company's key milestones since its founding on August 5, 1997. The new video can be viewed here on Viking's website, as well as here on Viking's award-winning enrichment channel, Viking.TV. All this week, Viking.TV daily programming has centred on Norwegian culture and history as a tribute to the Hagen family's Norwegian heritage.https://www.vikingrivercruises.com.au/video/why-viking/25-anniversary/play.htmlCarnival Celebrates International Beer DayTo celebrate International Beer Day, Carnival Cruise Line is serving up fleetwide a new brew, ParchedPig Beach Lager, a refreshing, crisp and golden beer that is available in cans in bar and dining venues and on tap in select locations.Developed by Carnival's brew team, ParchedPig Beach Lager pairs well with a Guy's Burger or BlueIguana soft tacos, or as a refreshing ale to enjoy on its own. Continuing its partnership with Lakeland, Fla.-based Brew Hub, Carnival was the first cruise line to can and keg its own private label beers crafted by its in-house brewery team in 2019, after introducing the onboard brewery concept on Carnival Vista in 2016.The Beach Lager joins several other Carnival Brews fan-favorites already available on the Carnival ships:ThirstyFrog Caribbean Wheat – an unfiltered wheat beer with flavors of orange and spices.ThirstyFrog Red – light, clean, frothy and a little bold, this craft beer offers balanced character and whispers of toasted malt.ParchedPig West Coast IPA – the embodiment of a traditional West Coast India Pale Ale, this hoppy, intense beer is loaded with bitterness with a bright flavor profile and distinctive aroma of citrus and pine.ParchedPig Toasted Amber Ale – highlighted by its rich amber color and notes of toasted caramel and biscuit, this beer is well balanced, smooth and highly drinkable.Carnival Birthday Beer – a refreshing golden ale with medium hops, specially made by the Carnival Brews Team, for its 50th Birthday celebration.NCL celebrates the Float Out of Norwegian Viva Norwegian Cruise Line, announced that Norwegian Viva, the second of six vessels in its ground-breaking Prima Class, floated out from her dry dock at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera (Venice), Italy, marking a major construction milestone and the first time the new vessel touches water. To celebrate the occasion, a commemorative coin was welded into Norwegian Viva in a traditional maritime ceremony, presided over by Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line and Antonio Quintano, shipyard director of Fincantieri. The float out signifies the completion of external works and painting of Norwegian Prima, including the striking hull artwork designed by Italian graffiti artist Manuel Di Rita, commonly known as “Peeta.” Construction now continues on Norwegian Viva's interior fittings and guest accommodations before she is officially delivered to the cruise line and commences sailing in 2023.NCL Takes delivery of Norwegian Prima Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel with a 55-year history of breaking boundaries, has taken delivery of its newest ship, Norwegian Prima, in Marghera, Venice at the renowned Fincantieri shipyard.Launching later this month, Norwegian Prima will be the first major cruise ship christened in Iceland, commencing her eight-day inaugural voyage in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik on 27 August 2022, sailing to Amsterdam. Global popstar Katy Perry, who serves as Norwegian Prima's Godmother, will fulfil the longstanding maritime tradition of blessing and officially naming the ship, as well as performing during the christening ceremony.AIDA Cruises: New 2023 summer itineraries in the north availableFor the 2023 summer season, AIDA Cruises is launching new itineraries for the cruise ships AIDAdiva, AIDAmar and AIDAnova. In Folge 54 feiern wir unseren 2. Geburtstag!
Die Astronomin Ruth Grützbauch berichtet u.a.

I can't help but ponder on my sunset,What happens to me on the day I die? It's not that I worry, panic, or fret,I just hope I'll have time to say goodbye.I hope I leave good memories behind,Memories that never grow diminished,I hope they say that I was true and kind,I hope I leave no poems half finished.I hope my life will have been full of love,And that I smiled and laughed ev'ry day,That I never shirked things I was scared of,I embraced fear and did them anyway. I hope I'll be ready, not scared to see, What gods will be standing, waiting for me. In the event of my final demise,Will Christ arrive in splendour and glory,Will he judge me for my wrongs, sins, and lies?Perhaps he'll admit me to paradise,And I'll climb the stairs to the pearly gates,Angels with harps sing and play and entice,And my peaceful eternity awaits.Or maybe he will send me down to burn,And the devil himself will have his fun,Maybe demons will torture me in turn,Forever in fires of perdition. Will I be judged by Christ? I have no clue, I wonder perhaps are those tales true?I wonder, perhaps, are those tales true,That I heard told upon my grandma's hearth,That fairies will come and take me back to,Bonnie Scotland the brave; land o' me birth. Thus guided through caves and roads underground,And through the fabled lands of Tír Na Nóg,I'll make me way northward, back homeward bound,To the land of mountains, heather, and fog,And roam forever 'cross the moors an' braes,Drink in the Lochs with a satisfied soul,Watch the northern lights set the sky ablaze,Dance in the heather, until time unfolds. But will fairies roam so south to find me? On islands in the Ionian sea.On islands in the Ionian sea,Old gods are somewhat remembered still now,Would they have right to lay claim upon me,If I were to die here someday, somehow. If I am buried on this land hither,Will I descend to underworld below? Will Χάρων take me across the river? Will I have a coin to pay him to row? Will I meet Κέρβερος and pat his heads?Or is he too busy guarding the door? Will I stand among souls in dank and dread,All wandering aimless forever more? Do Fates spin threads, weave the tapestry whole? I want to know what happens to my soul.I want to know what happens to my soul,Or if perhaps the soul even exists,Is death just nothingness as black as coal?In my heart hope for more always persists. If this life is truly all there is to,Existence and humanity I'll grieve,I'll fade from memory one day, it's true,But in my heart I can't help but believe.Believe in something, something more than this,Some immortal future when days run out,Be it peace eternal, torture, or bliss,There is something to come, I have no doubt. I know one day I will be glad to see, Whoever comes to take my soul from me.Whoever comes to take my soul from me,Whether they be Jesus Christ, fae, or fate,I'll tell them, all filled with smiles and glee"I'm sorry my friend, you are far too late,For I've already hidden it away,And made my own heaven here on this earth,In a place I hope forever to stay.Take my apologies, for what they're worth. You cannot take it through force, fear, or threat,My soul is bound here, and forever safe,So no more will it panic, fear, or fret,Never will it leave my favourite place; It's peaceful, content, and safe from all harms; Lying sweetly here in my lovers arms.

I'm on the beginning of a 15 month journey across the globe and it more or less starts right here, in Edinburgh. From musical pubs, to hitching across Lochs, biking through wildflower fields and landing in a cosmic, universalist, naturalist compound —the journey from Edinburgh to Glasgow to Elgin was filled with mirth, adventure, and of course, a litany of international characters. This hearty land with its resolute and stalwart people make for a memorable journey! To learn more about Danny G, please be sure to check out his Instagram @guerratravels.
