Check out one of our favorite episodes, Bourbon and Geology, where we discuss the link between Kentucky geology and all things bourbon. September is National Bourbon Heritage Month, and the folks at Bourbon & Banter have a unique challenge every September. They want Bourbon lovers to taste a different Bourbon each day during the month. If that sounds daunting, Bourbon & Banter founder Pops Garrett says it can be fun, too. We'll talk with Pops Garrett about the Challenge on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, Sweden's Mackmyra Distillery has filed for bankruptcy, and we'll get your views on whether this is a sign of things to come for the whisky industry.

To celebrate and continue our focus on National Bourbon Heritage Month, Bourbon expert Tom Fischer welcomes alchemist and distiller Alan Bishop to talk about and taste Indiana Bourbon. Fischer and Bishop taste the new Hindostan Falls Heirloom Bourbon Whiskey from Spirits of French Lick Distillery. Bishop also shares some history on the importance of the state of Indiana in Bourbon whiskey. Hindostan crafted in West Baden Springs, Indiana with a unique blend of 150+ open-pollinated and landrace corns, this bourbon spotlights the diverse flavor profiles from the heirloom corn's distinct coloration and amino acid breakdown. Named after Hindostan Falls in Indiana, once a bustling town but abandoned after disease outbreaks, this bourbon pays tribute to a lost legacy. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bourbonblog/support
Is September National Bourbon Heritage Month? That's actually not as straight forward as you might think, but in this episode, I break it down. In honor of the month, I review a bourbon very near and dear to me - my first ever barrel pick! For those who missed the pick, I also walk through the flavor notes of Blue Note Juke Joint in general, and compare to what I taste in my barrel pick, which is the Uncut and Unfiltered version of Juke Joint. Lastly, I discuss what to expect from my next pick, which is coming soon. Support the show on Patreon: patreon.com/whiskeynoobs
Ah, the wonders of technology. We had planned a different episode for today now that Bar Hacks podcast co-host David Klemt is back from a trip to Colorado and Oktoberfest at Vail. However, we finally experienced the dreaded unsalvageable recording for the first time since the podcast's inception. However, all is not lost! After all, it's still September and that means it's still National Bourbon Heritage Month in the US. That got us thinking: We've had the honor of speaking with some of the most dynamic and informative personalities in the bourbon and hospitality worlds. So, we've rounded up some of our favorite entertaining and educational moments from five bourbon-focused Bar Hacks episodes. In this roundup you'll hear from Megan Breier, Michael Toscano, Anthony "Terry" Bohlinger, Lynn House (the 2022 Best US Brand Ambassador Spirited Award winner!), and Theo Rutherford. Connect with Doug Radkey, KRG Hospitality, Bar Hacks, and host David Klemt on Instagram. Cheers!

It's only appropriate that a bourbon behemoth would join our podcast to kick off National Bourbon Heritage Month in celebration of America's native spirit. Few rival Bill Samuels Jr., former CEO and current Chairman Emeritus of Maker's Mark Bourbon, in life experience and industry knowledge. From growing up in Bardstown, KY next-door to other American whiskey legends, to his short-lived career as a rocket scientist, to continuing his parents' legacy at Maker's Mark, Bill is bursting with stories -- and he's not too shy to share them. After a great celebration of National Bourbon Heritage Month, The Dram State heads back over to Scotland to continue the journey through the scotch producing regions. This episode explores The Lowlands region and looks at their flavors, production and drops in on a couple of their more notable distilleries, Auchentoshan & Glenkinchie.
In continuation of National Bourbon Heritage Month - and the last episode in our Bourbon series - this week's guests are Peggy Noe Stevens and Susan Reigler, authors of Which Fork Do I Use With My Bourbon? Setting the Table for Tastings, Food Pairings, Dinners, and Cocktail Parties. This week's featured cocktail is Susan's recipe for a Manhattan: Manhattan 3 ounces bourbon 1 ounce sweet vermouth 2 dashes Angostura bitters 1 stemmed cherry for garnish Combine the bourbon, vermouth, and bitters in a mixing beaker with ice and stir until well chilled. Strain into a chilled, stemmed cocktail glass or coupe glass. Garnish with the cherry. Links: Book Peggy Noe Stevens Susan Reigler Bit by a Fox Links: Blog Instagram Facebook Twitter Podcast Music
To finish up National Bourbon Heritage Month, we went with the hard to find but thrilled to drink Blanton's. Does the juice live up to the hype? Tony Katz (http://facebook.com/tonykatz) hosts Eat! Drink! Smoke (http://facebook.com/eatdrinksmoke)! now heard on radio stations across America! It's a review of Blanton's bourbon, and the Casa Cuba Doble Seis cigar from Arturo Fuente. America's Favorite Amatuer Drinker Fingers Malloy (http://facebook.com/fingersmalloy) has the News of the Week, including new rules from the Trump administration that limit the ability for Americans to get Cuban-origin rum and cigars. Is this all about the election? Rolling Stone has a list of the top 500 albums of all time, and Fingers has opinions. A woman in the UK wrecked a liquor store because she didn't want to follow the arrows on the floor. And McDonald's might do away with all-day breakfast, which breaks Tony's heart. Subscribe Now! In continuation of National Bourbon Heritage Month, this week's guest is Trey Zoeller, founder of Jefferson’s Bourbon, a collection of small batch bourbons founded in 1997, before there was a 'craft' spirits industry. Trey and I discussed his family's deep connection to Kentucky bourbon, Jefferson’s early days before the bourbon boom when he could barely give the stuff away, and his experimental approach to aging whiskey on a shark tagging vessel. This week's featured "cocktail" is how Trey prefers to drink Jefferson's Small Batch, Trey's Favorite - poured over a large rock, with a few dashes of spiced bitters, and a twist. Just in time for National Bourbon Heritage Month, we are exploring a first for us, bourbon barrel aged wine. We may be familiar with wine barrel-finished bourbons, but what about the other way around? Josh Cellars recently introduced their Reserve Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon which was matured in Redemption Bourbon barrels for two months. We shared some whiskey and wine with the Founder of Josh Cellars. We’re joined by Joseph Carr, Founder of Josh Cellars, to talk whiskey and wine. The son of a lumberjack (Josh; the brand's namesake), Joe started out serving beers and shots of Jack Daniels at the local bar. But, in chasing his American Dream, Joe advanced his career by working in New York City and eventually began traveling the world as a Wine Sommelier and whiskey lover. Michael and Scott picked Joe’s brain and we explored similarities between the two worlds of wine and whiskey. This is especially true in the cooperage (barrels) used for each, unique woods, and perfectly tuned and crafted barrels are critical to unique whiskies and wines. The next time your wine-loving friends are looking for a bottle, but sure to point them toward this unique Cabernet Sauvignon, the best of both worlds. The bourbon barrel contributes subtle notes of vanilla, brown sugar, and rich caramel, which blend with traditional Cabernet flavors of red fruits. Thank you to the Deutsch Family of Spirits for connecting us with Josh Cellars and sending us the new Bourbon Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon and Redemption Bourbon to enjoy on the show. MGP is well known in the bourbon and whiskey world, though there is a bit of mystery behind the historic Lawrenceburg Indiana distillery. We're joined by MGP Master Blender, David Whitmer, to explore the history of MGP, King of The Bootleggers George Remus, and MGP's core lineup of whiskies. We taste through two offerings of Rossville Union Rye, George Remus Bourbon, and a very special limited release of Remus Repeal Reserve Bourbon. Are these MGP's best kept secrets? August is National Rye Month, followed by National Bourbon Heritage Month in September. MGP, as the "Masters of Rye", are doing their part to celebrate all things rye this month. They'll also be spending September celebrating Bourbon with the launch of Remus Repeal Reserve Series IV Bourbon. David Whitmer, Master Blender, has a background spanning nearly 30 years in the food and beverage industries. As you'll quickly learn, David Whitmer is a walking encyclopedia of the science, history and craft behind spirits and product innovation.
