Colonel E. H. Taylor, Jr. Barrel Proof Rye Whiskey is the 13th release to join the famed E. H. Taylor Collection from the Buffalo Trace Distillery. This rye is uncut and unfiltered. Even though little is known about the age or mashbill of this whiskey, it comes in at a whooping 126 proof. This release has been rumored for many years, but the fact that it is finally here is very exciting. However, the reviews on this one have been incredibly mixed with some expressing love and others describing it as lackluster. What do we think? You'll have to listen to find out. Once again, we are joined by our good friend Jason from Arsenic Culture. Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. is known as the father of the modern day bourbon industry. Not only is he a central figure in creation of what we now know and love as the Buffalo Trace Distillery, but he was also instrumental in the passing of the Bottled-in-Bond Act and even served as Mayor of Frankfort for 16 years. Though his beloved "EH Taylor" label has been owned by many different distilleries over the years, Sazerac purchased the label in 2009, effectively bringing Taylor home. This week, the guys uncork the once a year release of EH Taylor Barrel Proof Bourbon. This is the 12th release of its kind and clocks in at a whopping 131.1 proof. Will this bourbon be "hot to be hot" or will it delight our senses? In this episode, we reflect on a recent night out on the town in Lexington and also do our best Jerky Boys impression while calling the Sazerac customer service number. Iggy, Michael, and Ken taste the 2019 E.H. Taylor Amaranth Grain of the Gods. Will this distinctive grain change the flavor of E.H. Taylor, and will it be for the best? Music by Adam Whitehead - https://www.facebook.com/adamwhiteheadmusic Email us at - thewhiskeyfriends@gmail.com #whiskey #Buffalo Trace #amaranth #Grain of the Gods #tasting #bourbon #butterscotch #spearmint #licorice #unique E.H. Taylor Amaranth Grain of the Gods 2019 Today, we had the privilege of tasting a rare and elusive bourbon - the E.H. Taylor Amaranth Grain of the Gods 2019. This unique whiskey, part of Buffalo Trace's experimental lineup, is known for its distinctive use of amaranth grain, a plant historically used by the Aztecs. Let's delve into our impressions of this exceptional spirit. Appearance: We were immediately struck by the beautiful, deep amber hue of this bourbon. Its rich color hinted at the complexity that lay ahead. Nose: Upon nosing, the Amaranth Grain of the Gods greeted us with a captivating butterscotch aroma. It was sweet, inviting, and had an intriguing hint of spearmint. The 100-proof nature of this bourbon made the nose stand out, leaving an impression that was both bold and enticing. Palate: Taking our first sips, the initial impression was one of sweetness, with honey notes dancing on the tongue. The unique amaranth grain added an unmistakable twist, offering flavors of licorice and spearmint that set it apart from traditional bourbons. Dark berry undertones, akin to blackberries, added depth and complexity to the palate. It was a true journey of flavors. Finish: The finish was medium in length, gradually transitioning from sweetness to a delightful warmth. As it progressed, we noticed hints of bitter oak, cinnamon, and baking spices, a testament to the craftsmanship behind this whiskey. The oak tannins, in particular, made their presence known, rounding off the experience beautifully. Overall Impressions: The Buffalo Trace Amaranth Grain of the Gods 2019 is undeniably a unique bourbon that leaves a lasting impression. Its departure from the traditional rye mash bill, replaced with amaranth, resulted in a whiskey that's both familiar and distinctly different. While we couldn't help but appreciate the craftsmanship that went into this spirit, its rarity and price point make it more of a collector's item than a daily sipper. It's a whiskey to be savored on special occasions or shared among enthusiasts who can appreciate its uniqueness. Rating: We would give this bourbon a solid 9.7 out of 10 for its exceptional flavor profile, distinctive character, and the memorable experience it offers. However, its limited availability and high price tag make it an investment for true connoisseurs. In conclusion, we're grateful for the opportunity to taste E.H. Taylor's Amaranth Grain of the Gods 2019, thanks to a generous contributor. It's a whiskey that challenges expectations and rewards those who seek out rare and exceptional spirits.

Have you ever looked back on a project and said: “What took so long?” That is this episode. The boys bring two of their favorite bottles—the bottles that all other bottles are judged against. Matt shares The Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch and Drew brings Fortaleza Blanco. And they both agree: It's about damn time! Matt tells us all about the colorful character and innovator that was The Colonel E.H. Taylor, and especially the first piece of food legislation in the US: The Bottled in Bond Act of 1897. (We had whiskey legislation before we had the USDA or FDA!) Drew tells a few stories about Fortaleza, suggests everyone checks out The Agave Social Club podcast for more history, and we review the Taste Tequila / Tequila Matchmaker Confirmed Additive Free program. The QuickSips™ are magical. Vanilla and Brine? Yep. Olives and Caramel? Yep. And they're delicious? YEP! Buffalo Trace has acquired a who's who of the bourbon industry, and E. H. Taylor is a giant among them. Considered one of the fathers of Bottled-In-Bond, who championed legislation that set a standard for purity in the bourbon industry. Iggy brought in one of the latest bottles from E.H. Taylor that happened to also be bottled-in-bond. From Buffalo Trace who now owns the E.H. Taylor brand, "Many of the barrels selected for the E.H. Taylor, Jr. Single Barrel are aged in Warehouse C, which was built by Taylor in 1881 and proven to be an excellent aging warehouse. Each barrel is hand-picked and Bottled in Bond at 100 proof to honor its namesake." Learn more about E.H. I'm diving into our archives and presenting one of the amazing sessions that we held back in May of 2020 at the first and only Whiskey From Home event. Many people asked if another Whiskey From Home event would ever happen... and I thought long and hard about what it took to make this happen. Whiskey From Home had over 15k people stream it live during the height of COVID and, to be honest, it was a true sense of accomplishment. It was the first large scale virtual whiskey event and it was a true collaboration effort from everyone involved. Here we are a few years later and everyone wants to get back to being in person so that's why WFH was sort of a one and done. However, I want to share with you a session by Brian Haara, you know him as Sipp'n Corn on the roundtable and our resident law expert, as he dives into why E.H. Taylor Despised George T Stagg and more bourbon stories from his book, Bourbon Justice. If you're a bourbon geek like me, you will love this session. Fannie & Freddie w/ Colonel E.H. Taylor | EP60 A unique bourbon whisky our host Bill Yates found. Maybe one of the older bourbons we have had. But we got serious for a moment to talk about changes in Freddie and Fannie Mac that affect our real estate business. We would love to hear your thoughts on the changes coming down the financial lending side of our industry and how you think it will affect your real estate business.
People are always asking me what my favorite bourbon is. This is a difficult question because there are so many that I love, but I have narrowed it down to my top 5 favorite bourbons of all time. I have had some amazing bourbons, but I purposefully made the list exclusively from bourbons that are still in production. This eliminated dusties and any one time releases. I also kept it strictly bourbon so no ryes were considered for the list. I didn't plan it this way, but all of my favorites are cask strength aka barrel proof whiskey. They are also highly allocated, so not exactly what would be considered beginner whiskey since they would be very difficult to obtain and maybe too high in proof. 4 of my 5 are from the Buffalo Trace Distillery and 2 of the 5 were from the BTAC line. Also, back by popular demand is my lovely wife who helps me with tasting notes and makes it entertaining with her awkward charm. Please Subscribe, Review, Like, and Comment!

Holy Moly is this one smooth Rye Ladies and Gentlemen. Having put the word out that I was looking for a bottle on a whim, a fellow Whiskey enthusiast let me know they had one and an exchange was born. Thank you Anthony! This is one of my favorite rye's and it is just as good as I remember after having it at 302 Wheaton over the Summer. These are traditionally hard to find and only come out every so often. So if you should stumble on one, and are a fan of E.H. Taylor and haven't tried it yet, do so. It is worth it (at retail of course). Cheers!

We’re celebrating Bourbon heritage month with an all Bourbon episode. It’s three pours of a classic brand that has been revitalized and its predecessor. We’re drinking again with Old Taylor and Pinhook bourbons.
As I expose myself to more offerings from the Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. line, I become more impressed. Having a bottle of Small Batch, today's Single Barrel, and sampling Straight Rye and the Barrel Proof, I can tell you that those 4 alone are worth pursuing. Yet there are 7 additional expressions out there to be tried. I admit I like this brand better than Weller, it has more to it, more complexity, yet more familiar and desired notes. The Single Barrel will depend on the release typically. Each barrel can be different, but they can be oh so good. Store picks or just off the shelf, this one is worth the money if you can find them.
In this week's episode, Nik & Chalonda dive into the back story of Colonel E.H. Taylor and break down the bottles of the Single Barrel vs. the Small Batch.
After Dr. Crow and Oscar Pepper passed away, the history of Old Crow would take a dramatic turn. James E. Pepper would be the new generation taking over the old distillery, but Old Crow would move on, with a little help from Colonel E.H. Taylor. In this episode, I'll take a look at 130 legendary years that followed this tumultuous period. And I'll talk with David Meier of Glenn's Creek Distilling, the current owner of the Old Crow Distillery ruins, about what he is doing to preserve the legacy of Dr. James C. Crow.

Cohiba Nicaragua. A spicy and peppery stick. Smoke this slowly. It’s bold and smooths out a bit as you smoke it. It’s stronger in the 1st third than the middle and end. E.H. Taylor Small Batch. The aroma carries lightly toasted oak, with dried figs and butterscotch. Sweetness balanced with tobacco and dark spices. The finish is just long enough to prepare the palette for another sip. We don’t get all of that. It’s a pretty smooth drink and is generally a sweet and fruity drink. The Cohiba does knock out some of the fruity flavor, but we still like the combo. The warmer the Taylor is, the fruiter it got. The More: They talk about how a boonie hat is used. They talk drive times and compare the strength of the Cohiba Nicaragua to other strong cigars. They talk branding issues when Cuban brands re-enter the US market with those brands already being used in the US. They somehow trail off on famous people’s heights.

Its time to head back to the speakeasy as we enjoy a short pour of some of the "best juice that Buffalo Trace makes." Named after one of the founding fathers of the industry, Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr, this single barrel offering is handpicked from Buffalo Trace’s Warehouse C, and bottled in bond to honor the great man. He is perhaps more famously known as being one of the more active pursuers of pushing for the Bottled-In-Bond Act of 1897. This act would guarantee that American made whiskey would be at least 4 years old, aged in a bonded warehouse under US Government supervision, be the product of one distillation season from one distillery and bottled at a minimum proof of 100% (50% ABV). Join us for a short pour as we toast the man who saved whiskey. “If you came here to learn, drink what you have learned. If you came here to share, share what you drink. If you came here a stranger, may you exit as a friend; and if you came here for and adventure, drink up!” Facebook Group
