The Scotchy Bourbon Boys
Reviving A Forgotten Bourbon Name with Bill McBrayer Of McBrayer Distilling

The Scotchy Bourbon Boys

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 29, 2026 89:21 Transcription Available

Send us Fan MailWe sit down with Bill McBrayer to trace how a forgotten Kentucky bourbon legacy turns into a living brand, starting with a family story, a trademark deadline, and a mash bill hidden in the historical record. We talk through the hard parts of building a whiskey company the right way, plus the joy of watching family history become something you can taste and share. • the moment a trademark requirement forces real bourbon production • digging up William Harris McBrayer's story and why it matters to bourbon history • finding the 1870 mash bill reference and recreating a high-corn legacy recipe • partnering with Wilderness Trail and using heirloom Bloody Butcher corn • navigating licensing, controlled-state hurdles, and early bottling decisions • securing the Cedar Brook trademark and rebuilding brand identity • visiting and buying land tied to the Cedar Brook distillery site near Lawrenceburg • Whiskey Trust and Prohibition context that shaped Kentucky bourbon brands • walking through the current lineup: legacy mash bill, bottled-in-bond, and weeded bourbon • single barrel releases, Legacy Club access, and expanding distribution Sign up for the legacy club, doesn't cost anything. A family name can disappear from bourbon shelves for decades, but it doesn't have to stay gone. We're joined by Bill McBrayer, president and steward of McBrayer Legacy Spirits, to unpack the true story behind bringing an old Kentucky bourbon lineage back to life and why it started with something as unromantic as a trademark deadline. We talk about the rabbit hole that begins with genealogy research and a historic blog post, then turns into a real distilling plan when Bill learns he has to “use” the brand to keep it. From there, the conversation gets wonderfully specific: an 1870 letter connected to E H Taylor, a high-corn mash bill, heirloom Bloody Butcher red corn, and working with Wilderness Trail to recreate a legacy profile that stands out in today's crowded craft whiskey market. The story also moves beyond the bottle. Bill shares what it takes to navigate licensing, distribution, and the slow economics of aging Kentucky bourbon for 8, 10, or 12 years. We dig into Lawrenceburg history, the Cedar Brook distillery site, the Whiskey Trust era, and how protecting a heritage brand becomes a responsibility, not a hustle. If you care about bourbon history, bottled-in-bond releases, single barrel picks, and building a family-owned whiskey brand with long-term purpose, you'll want this one. Subscribe, share with a bourbon friend, and leave us a review with your favorite “lost brand” comeback story. A.I says...Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Four Grain is an incredibly rare, limited-release bourbon by Buffalo Trace that features an unconventional mashbill of corn, rye, wheat, and malted barley. Bottled-in-bond at 100 proof, the sought-after whiskey balances the sweetness of wheat with the classic spice of rye. Unless you've been living under a rock, you probably saw that Buffalo Trace recently released this bottle after an almost 10 year hiatus. It was met with much fanfare and calamity at the distillery. But, was it worth the hype? Join Kenny and El Jason as they guide you through a tasting of this bourbon and compare it with other four grain bourbons. --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@themashupkyJoin our community on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheMashUpBourbonPodcastPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!

Send us a textAfter trading allocated bottles from historic brands, and a question every bourbon fan wrestles with: when does hype outpace the pour? We put E.H. Taylor Bottled-in-Bond from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection on the table after swapping out a Pappy 10 (Old Rip) and some cash to find out if the first-ever 100-proof BTAC earns its secondary price—or simply its place in history. We set the scene with why “first and only” matters here: not a one-time release, but the only bottled-in-bond in BTAC's lineage. Then we walk through the proofing journey, from 140 proof off the still, to 125 proof into barrel, to a composed 100 in glass, along with how water choice, temperature, and integration shape the final profile. With a massive 62 percent angel's share over 15 years and 4 months, the bourbon promises concentration, yet it prioritizes balance over brute force. On the nose, we pick up apple, maple sweetness, vanilla, caramel, and oak. The palate drifts from a quick black licorice flash to soft fruits and an elegant finish of brown sugar, cinnamon, and light pepper. The surprise is the mouthfeel—clean and approachable rather than the heavy oil and intensity BTAC fans expect from Stagg or WLW.That contrast leads to the big debate: is elegance at 100 proof a feature or a flaw in a lineup famed for high-octane hitters?  This is excellent at MSRP and a meaningful step up from standard E.H. Taylor bottled-in-bond, but a tough sell at eight times retail on the secondary market. If you love the Taylor profile and want a milestone bottle, it's a smart pick near retail. If you're chasing BTAC thunder, look toward Stagg or WLW. For those building value-forward shelves, we also highlight standouts like Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, Bardstown Bourbon Company releases, Ezra 7, New Riff single barrels, and reliable daily sippers when you can find them.Pour one, press play, and tell us where you land on rarity vs. flavor. If you enjoyed this breakdown, follow, share the show with a friend who loves bourbon hunts, and leave a review—your feedback helps more whiskey lovers find us.

Host Todd Ritter flies solo in this special episode, taking listeners on a journey through the latest bourbon news and a deep dive into whiskey history. With Jim out of town, Todd kicks off the first half by tackling a massive slate of industry updates before sampling a unique experimental whiskey. He covers the Lost Lantern "Scotch Lover's" Fall 2025 collection, the nationwide expansion of Wyoming Whiskey's "Buffalo Bill Cody," Jim Beam's new Harden's Creek trio (Mushroom, Beaver, and Owl), and Jack Daniel's Distillery Series #15, a "Sweet Mash" Tennessee Whiskey. Todd also details new releases from Chicken Cock and Town Branch, Buffalo Trace's 9 millionth barrel milestone, and the bombshell news that Kirin is exploring the sale of the Four Roses distillery. The segment features a deep dive into the 2025 Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC), highlighting the new 15-year-old Colonel E.H. Taylor Bottled in Bond and a formidable 142.8-proof George T. Stagg. The first tasting of the day is the Remus Master Distiller Experimental Series Number One from MGP. This 9-year-old, 107-proof bourbon was aged in lightly charred and heavily toasted Seguin Moreau barrels made from staves seasoned outdoors for 24 months. Todd finds a big vanilla nose with a "wine funkiness," fig, and dark baking spices. The palate proves "soft and velvety" with notes of toasted marshmallow, chocolate, a hint of red wine, and a sweet, spicy finish of candied pecan and allspice. For the second half, Todd unearths a true gem for history nerds: a complete reading of a 1909 essay by none other than Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr., titled "The Rule of the Regions." Discovered in the University of Kentucky archives, the essay provides a fascinating look into the mind of the bourbon pioneer. Taylor boldly declares Kentucky bourbon superior to Scotch and Irish whiskeys, attributing this to the "Rule of the Regions"—specifically, the paramount importance of Kentucky's unique limestone water. He discusses the industry's massive (for 1909) $180 million value, the evolution from primitive wooden stills to scientific copper distillation, and the superiority of Kentucky's dry, ascending-proof aging methods. Most notably, he champions the Bottled-in-Bond Act as the ultimate guarantee of quality and authenticity, a protection he notes that Scotland and Ireland unfortunately lack. To accompany this historic reading, Todd tastes the Oaklore Story Series Number 2, an Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish 4 Grain Bourbon. Hailing from Matthews, North Carolina, this 95-proof blend of 5-to-6-year-old bourbons (70% corn, 10% rye, 10% wheat, 10% malted barley) is finished for 12-18 months in sherry casks. The whiskey shows a ruby tinge and offers a nose of raisin, wine, caramel, and vanilla. The soft palate features notes of black cherry, cocoa, sherry-driven nuttiness, and sweet dark fruits. In a very special episode, host Todd Ritter travels back in time to sit down with a true titan of the bourbon industry: the ghost of Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. himself. Taking a brief leave from his permanent residence in the Frankfort Cemetery, the Colonel joins the show to tell his incredible life story in his own words. He recounts his early life, from being orphaned as a child and sent to live with a prominent guardian in New Orleans to being adopted by his uncle—the original Edmund Haynes Taylor—in Frankfort. Colonel Taylor explains how he learned the banking business first, giving him a unique financial insight into the successes and failures of Kentucky's early distillers. This business acumen, combined with access to the meticulous distilling notes of the legendary Dr. James C. Crow, set him on a path to revolutionize the industry. He details his trip to Europe to study Old World techniques, bringing back innovations like climate-controlled rickhouses and copper distilling equipment. He walks listeners through the founding of his iconic distilleries, from the O.F.C. and Hermitage to his ultimate masterpiece, the Old Taylor Distillery (now Castle & Key), a stunning "showcase" designed to be the birthplace of bourbon tourism. Along the way, he shares tales of his famous falling out with his one-time business partner, George T. Stagg. In the second half, the man behind the portrayal, Frankfort historian Russ Kennedy, steps out of character to join the show. Russ shares his own fascinating journey from being the "world's worst history student" to becoming one of Frankfort's most passionate historical storytellers. After a career with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, a post-retirement gig as a tour guide at the State Capitol ignited a love for local history. He discusses how he developed his craft, first portraying Frankfort's founder, Stephen Frank, before taking on the iconic role of Colonel Taylor. Russ talks about his work today, leading historical walking tours by appointment, making special appearances as the Colonel at distilleries and events, and his involvement in projects like the Frankfort bourbon history documentary. This unique episode is a departure from the usual tasting format, offering a rich, story-driven deep dive into the life and legacy of one of bourbon's most influential figures. Though his beloved "EH Taylor" label has been owned by many different distilleries over the years, Sazerac purchased the label in 2009, effectively bringing Taylor home. This unique whiskey, part of Buffalo Trace's experimental lineup, is known for its distinctive use of amaranth grain, a plant historically used by the Aztecs. Let's delve into our impressions of this exceptional spirit. Appearance: We were immediately struck by the beautiful, deep amber hue of this bourbon. Its rich color hinted at the complexity that lay ahead. Nose: Upon nosing, the Amaranth Grain of the Gods greeted us with a captivating butterscotch aroma. It was sweet, inviting, and had an intriguing hint of spearmint. The 100-proof nature of this bourbon made the nose stand out, leaving an impression that was both bold and enticing. Palate: Taking our first sips, the initial impression was one of sweetness, with honey notes dancing on the tongue. The unique amaranth grain added an unmistakable twist, offering flavors of licorice and spearmint that set it apart from traditional bourbons. Dark berry undertones, akin to blackberries, added depth and complexity to the palate. It was a true journey of flavors. Finish: The finish was medium in length, gradually transitioning from sweetness to a delightful warmth. As it progressed, we noticed hints of bitter oak, cinnamon, and baking spices, a testament to the craftsmanship behind this whiskey. The oak tannins, in particular, made their presence known, rounding off the experience beautifully. Overall Impressions: The Buffalo Trace Amaranth Grain of the Gods 2019 is undeniably a unique bourbon that leaves a lasting impression. Its departure from the traditional rye mash bill, replaced with amaranth, resulted in a whiskey that's both familiar and distinctly different. While we couldn't help but appreciate the craftsmanship that went into this spirit, its rarity and price point make it more of a collector's item than a daily sipper. It's a whiskey to be savored on special occasions or shared among enthusiasts who can appreciate its uniqueness. Rating: We would give this bourbon a solid 9.7 out of 10 for its exceptional flavor profile, distinctive character, and the memorable experience it offers. However, its limited availability and high price tag make it an investment for true connoisseurs. In conclusion, we're grateful for the opportunity to taste E.H. Taylor's Amaranth Grain of the Gods 2019, thanks to a generous contributor. It's a whiskey that challenges expectations and rewards those who seek out rare and exceptional spirits.

Buffalo Trace has acquired a who's who of the bourbon industry, and E. H. Taylor is a giant among them. Considered one of the fathers of Bottled-In-Bond, who championed legislation that set a standard for purity in the bourbon industry. Iggy brought in one of the latest bottles from E.H. Taylor that happened to also be bottled-in-bond. From Buffalo Trace who now owns the E.H. Taylor brand, "Many of the barrels selected for the E.H. Taylor, Jr. Single Barrel are aged in Warehouse C, which was built by Taylor in 1881 and proven to be an excellent aging warehouse. Each barrel is hand-picked and Bottled in Bond at 100 proof to honor its namesake." Learn more about E.H. Whiskey From Home had over 15k people stream it live during the height of COVID and, to be honest, it was a true sense of accomplishment. It was the first large scale virtual whiskey event and it was a true collaboration effort from everyone involved. Here we are a few years later and everyone wants to get back to being in person so that's why WFH was sort of a one and done.
