Also figured that these unicorns already had to be out there and I was right, I found one. Hey Mommas I know I promised you this episode way back in February but one, life is crazy and two life is just crazy. After this conversation I took a few days to really absorb what was said and to take a look at how I was treating myself. The words spoken on this episode are words that I've said to many mommas and words that rang so true for me but I let life pull me away from just being me. Just accepting me. Just loving on me. Just taking time to be with the girls I love. This episode, this conversation was just what I needed. After listening a few times...and even crying it out...I'm ready to share with you. My tribe. Pull out your tissues because you will surely cry from laughing and just feeling. It's one of those vulernable conversations that you need to hear just so you know you are seen and you're not alone. Hey Mommas I know alot of you are "Mature Mommas" but I have a few of you who are young or have young children that are on the journey to motherhood or fatherhood. On this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Thlisha. She is a doula with a specific purpose and I can't wait for you to hear how she is answering the call. Her "lemons" were turned into lemonade just by ONE person adding sugar to her situation. Powerful word spoken to a teenager that was growing a life in her womb changed the trajectory of her life. In this episode, you get a power lesson on the power of your words and what it means to step up and step in for someone in their time of need. Teenage parenthood isn't the end of the word when you have the right resources and community supporting you. Thlisha is just that and more. Hit play NOW and hear how she is pouring into this space and how we can do a better job as supporting these young people, even if it's only by offering words of encouragement.
Hey Mommas So this episode is a quick reminder that it's okay to only choose positive people to go on your pregnancy and birthing journey. When someone starts to speak negativity over your life you can quickly and unapologetically say "Whew...you don't have to worry about me" and leave. Sometimes I'm just here to give you permission so today I'm giving you permission to silence and leave negative people. Click play NOW to get your fill of laughter and positivity for the week. Love yall.
Hey Mommas So this episode is just a quick reminder to not forget who you are just because you became somone's Momma. You are still you, just with a mini person judging every little thing you do. Don't forget to take the time to love on yourself. Get out and do things that you love without thinking about the little crotch fruit that you love and adore. Hey Mommas!! Back again for another Doula Chat. I'm going to be honest with you, I've been trying for days to come up with a title for this episode but I just couldn't. I've listened several times and each time, I found another nugget and another title. At this point I'm like "Can I call it a chat about all the things with my best girlfriend?", which really isn't that far from the truth. This episode touches on what a Doula is, what they add to the space, the relationship between Doulas and Physicians/Midwives, How to find the perfect Doula, how important "Vibe" is in that relationship...we talked about it ALL. Hey Mommas, You asked, and to be honest so I did I, so I'm going to bring more information on home birthes from the experts out there doing it. One thing I have learned in this sacred space called birth is, women are going to do what they feel they need to do. What I'm here to do is to keep them safe. So to my Mommas that want to have a home birth, this episode is for you because EVERYONE isn't a candidate. EVERYONE isn't practicing safe practices. The same way I want to keep women safe in the hospital, I have to do my part for women that choose not to use the hospital as their birthing space. On this episode, I have a chat with Bethany. She is a certified nurse midwife that received her training from a high risk institution and also practiced there before opening her own practice and choosing to provide out of hospitals birthes. Today we have a candid discussion on who should attempt these deliveries and how to stay safe. I'm open to learn and I hope you are too.
Hey Mommas! Are you ready for the next level of The Mature Momma Life. Every season my goal is to get better and to grow bigger. This season, you'll hear a new voice every Thursday. I'm so excited to introduce you all to these amazing women that I've had the priviledge to talk to over the last month. These conversations will indeed be life changing and soul saving. Open up you heart, minds, and notebook...yall are about to get all this info.
Hey Mommas!! Freebirthing, let's talk about it...respectfully of course. If you look through birthing history, there was never a time when birthing alone was celebrated or recommended. There was ALWAYS someone in the city, town, or village that was called to assist with labor and delivery. Then there was a team of support to help during the postpartum period. In every culture, there was always someone. There was always a community. This episode is just a transparent conversation on MY opinion of freebirthing and why I 1. Don't think it's safe and 2. How there has never been a time where it was even "a thing". Except now it is and it's more performative vs beneficial. If you want to hear what Dr. San has to say, click here. Hey Mommas I'm here to give you the real on the lies of social media. Snap back culture is NOT a thing. You're hearing it from someone that sees at least 50 postpartum bellies and bodies a week. Hey Mommas! For the Mommas that know me, hey girl hey! Season three is here. For the new Mommas...don't believe anything the other mommas have told you. New Year, same me. I can say that I'm doing so much better now that I've taken the time to truly take care of me. I've said many times that I needs to just lay on somebody's couch and get some healing. Well guess what? I know how to take care of yall and take care of others very well, but I don't do the same for myself. Click Play now to hear how I got myself together and why YOU need to do the same.

The last week of Breastfeeding Month is “Black breastfeeding week”. And why does it deserve it's own week? Because for so long we have been excluded from the “everybody” months, days, and weeks. So it's okay that we, yes we because I'm a Black woman, have a week to get correct information out there and celebrate in a space for us. Also because we have our own issues that prevent us from initiating and continuing to breastfeed past 6 months. In this episode I bring to light the barriers we have and how to help remove them.
On this episode, we are going to talk about all the ridiculous lies…well let me say fibs or stories because I'm from the South and lie is a bigger cuss word that shit and damn…you've been told about breastfeeding. Trust me, I've heard them ALL. Now I must warn, some of the language may be triggering so make sure you're in a safe place. I don't want to minimize any words that may trigger memories or events that were traumatizing. Get comfy and click play NOW
Today we are going to talk the numbers and percentages. What can breastfeeding do not only for your little cherub, but also you? This is the episode to get you the information you need to decide why breastfeeding is for you. Why you should start and continue your journey. What you should do to support others in the journey. You're stuck in a break...and place of stillness and you think that something is wrong. Or you're being punished. It's the opposite Sis, God or whomever you see as your high being, is preparing you for something greater. Something so big, that they know you need a break to prepare for it.
Well May 22nd is World Pre-Eclampsia Day. I'm going to be honest; I'm always tickled at the celebrated days that pop up. Like there is a day to recognize and celebrate everything. I love it in one way but in another I am like “Dang, do I need a gift for that?!??” LOL But if giving it a day makes it more recognized and saves lives, then I'm for it. So in comes “World Pre Eclampsia Day”. So I've done an entire episode on hypertensive disorders that can effect and present themselves in pregnancy. If you having listened, jump back to episode Day 21. Today we will do a quick talk on Pre-Eclampsia. Now I say quick but you know these conversations are just that, live conversations of me talking to myself while talking to you. So it could be really quick or a bunch of rambling with important information mixed in LOL.
It's National Infertility Awareness Week and boy do I have a treat for you. Yesterday I had the honor of chatting with a Momma that has devoted her life to helping yall become Mommas when you need a little extra help. I learned so much from this Queen and I'm still massaging my hands because I couldn't keep up with the knowledge she was dropping. Dr. Torie Comeaux Plowden is an Obstetrician Gynecologist like me but she also decided to do an extra 4 years to learn all the things dealing with fertility. She's one of the gurus I send my patients to when my tricks to get pregnant just aren't working. In this hour plus, yes…we were yapping that long…we tackle normal fertility physiology, how to recognize when something isn't normal, we dive into the questions you should be asking yourself concerning child bearing…we talk about the myths of fertility especially in Black culture, we talk about the different options out there to achieve motherhood…and even after an hour and a half, we only scratched the surface so you know she's coming back. LOL So grab your notebooks, pens, girlfriends, significant others, and let's talk fertility with Dr. Torie.

Let me first say that I'm #TeamVaccinations. I believe in the science behind them and I've been able to live freely in the world because of them. There are diseases that I only know about because I had to study them in school. This is 100% because of science and vaccinations. As yall know, I always tell you to read the facts and make your own decisions. The only thing I can provide is facts and you make your decisions from there. This episode hopefully will answer some of your questions about the Covid vaccination and help you make a decision that is best for you and your unborn babe.
Your girl has been out here doing the most but I'm back. I've missed you and promise not to leave again. This is just a little snippet into what I've been up to. Also some rambling as you know I'm good for that.
Dr. Fatu Forna is one of my favorite humans in the entire world. She's an OB/GYN that has a passion for helping Mommas navigate the world of puberty and sex with our babies. Many of us probably never even had the conversation with our parents and now we are responsible for having this conversation with our kiddies. As an OB, I can tell you that ignoring the topic doesn't make the curiosity go away. I babies will find a way to get information and many times it's the wrong information that lands them in my office for OB appointments way too early. And lets not talk about the misinformation that keeps them from coming to my office for abnormal menses and vaginal issues. Let's be honest Mommas, we might not want to have this conversation, but we have to have this conversation. Our babies are depending on us. Dr. Fatu is here to help give us the words and wisdom to make this conversation as painless as possible. I learned so much talking to her and I hope you learn the same.
Get ready for a wild ride. If you need a laugh, this is it. I'm not even going to summarize the crazy. You just have to listen.

This is an episode straight from the heart. No script. Just a Black Momma pleading for someone to hear me and my sisters to help us get healthy enough to birth our next generation. Weathering as a phenomenon that has been found in Black women and is one of the reasons we see an increase in fetal and neonatal mortality and morbidity It has been found that in Black women, the younger we are the healthier our children are born and the older we are, the more complications our unborn children deal with. In comparison to other races, it's the opposite. Why? Because the older we get, the more stress we build in our bodies. This stress causes chronic disease and complications in future pregnancies. By the time we get to late 20s, our mind, body, and spirit are broken. No matter that we are more financially stable, our wombs are stressed. This episode is a talk from my heart on how others can help decrease the stress Black women face everyday which will help us birth healthier babies to help lead the next generation.
In this episode I give five reasons on why work peace as a mother is important and how to achieve it. Work doesn't have to stress you out or make you feel guilty for being a mother. The secret is out. Not only is the Maternal Mortality rate in the US is at an all time height, it effects Black Women 4-5 times more than other races. Yes you heard me, Black women are dying at a rate of 4-5 time more than other women. And no, lets not be quick to blame educational barriers or socio-economical barriers. Nope. White women with a high school education still have a higher chance of surviving pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum (1 year after delivery) than Black women that have a college degree. And no, these studies aren't saying that White women with less education deserve less education, it's say that ALL WOMEN deserve the same level of care. There ARE guidelines in place but because of implicit bias, racism, and access to care, we as Black women are receiving different levels of care.
So the biggest issue now is Mommas having to labor and deliver alone. Never did I think we would be in a time where Mommas would have to labor alone. Like I know back in the day it was the norm but today in 2020 it is not and should not. So many people are asking me how I feel about it and I'll tell you that I'm not happy. It makes me so sad that women are now delivering their children without a familiar support system. Yall know how big I am on advocates and it's no doubt in my mind that advocates keep mother's safe and heard. On this episode, I give some tips to deal with this huge curve ball that has been thrown your way. I know this is not what you expected but we have to make the best out of it and keep everyone safe. You know I had to pop in with some knowledge that you could implement because as you know, knowledge has no power without implementation. So hit play and absorb information will keep you safe if you are one of the Mommas that will have to labor alone. Obesity is a touchy subject that many physicians don't like to bring up. Especially with pregnant women. It's a fine line of trying to educate and offending. I know some patients view even addressing obesity as body shaming so it's really trying to make sure the patient understands that we are coming from a place of love (Because yall know I love yall) and help. Obesity in pregnancy automatically puts you at a high risk for complications in pregnancy. Because of these higher risks, I make sure to educate my patients on how to decrease their BMI before pregnancy and how to safely navigate a healthy diet and activity routine while pregnant. I want you to not be embarrassed by the number or diagnoses of obesity. I want you to be aware of the diagnoses and how you should be monitored during your pregnancy. It's not something you should run away from and it shouldn't be ignored by you or your obstetrical provider. You should both be on the same page so you and your child will make it through safely and alive. I want you to be well versed on this so when you recognize something it's right, you can speak up. It's been a crazy few weeks with information changing by the minute. A few weeks ago we first heard about the coronavirus but it wasn't that big of a deal, right? It was just something China was dealing with while we blissfully living in our uninfected bubble. Blissfully ignorant to horrors that were going on in China and then Italy. Now look at us. Every social media post is about covid-19. Every news story is about covid-19. On this episode, I will share with you what it means for you if you're pregnant and how you an stay safe. This episode is dedicated to the Momma that inspired this entire Podcast, Kira Johnson. Maternal Mortality is at an all time high and women are dying at alarming rates. Pregnancy-related deaths have increased from 7.2 per 100,000 live births in 1987 to 18 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2014. The United States is ranked 50th globally for its maternal mortality rate and is one of eight countries in which the mortality rate has increased. What's scarier? Women that look like me were dying at an even higher rate. Did you know that Black women have a 4-5 times chance of dying during pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum? The CDC reported "considerably racial disparities in pregnancy-related mortality exist" in its findings of 12.4 deaths per 100,000 live births for white women compared to the 40 deaths per 100,000 live births for black women. A study conducted showed the most prevalent racial disparities within America's middle class and determined that black mothers with advanced professional degrees, such as a master's degree or higher, have a higher chance of infant mortality compared to white women whose highest education level is the 8th grade. The causes of the gap remains unclear, but a study done states that it may be due to the way healthcare systems are organized and operated. Healthcare providers' biases, prejudices and uncertainty when treating minorities could also contribute to healthcare disparities. The study also claims patients' attitudes and behaviors play a role. A small percentage of minority patients do not trust health care professionals due to pass encounter or stories passed down by family member. How in the world do we make friends with other Mommas this late in life? We come to a place where we KNOW we need new friends but we have no idea on how to find them? We are all “old ladies” with toddlers. It's scary and funny because none of us really know what we are doing. The reason I feel that you have to have people in the struggle with you is because you need other people to let you know everything that's happening right now is normal. We need to find ANYTHING to do just to relax and get our minds off of parenting for a few hours. This could be happy hour, dinner at a nice restaurant, spa day, walking around the neighborhood, trying something new like candle making/cooking/etc, or just sitting in each other's house and gossiping…or watching reality TV. Those few hours are so refreshing. The energy you get from people that are going through the same things you are is just so invigorating. You get to bounce ideas, concerns, questions, and situations off people that can give you clear answers in a way they know you can receive them. I love my Momma Dates. Now like I said, I know it's hard finding friends this late in life. People are pretty protective of their intimate spaces and really don't want to take the time and energy to learn new people. I get that. But if you don't have a circle of Momma friends or what I like to call a Momma tribe, you need one, ASAP. They can be life changing. Now that I've given you enough reasons on why you should have a Momma Tribe, I'm going to give you a few tips on how to find people for yours. It's easier than you think. Plus this week start's Women's History Month. Get out there and meet some new women to make history with.
I want to say that this is no means and episode to bash or degrade women that choose freebirthing or homebirthing. What this episode and all episode is here to do is to empower women with information so they can make the best decision for them and their unborn child. What I don't want to do is create a hostile environment for any woman. I don't want anyone to leave this podcast and feel beat up on or bullied. What I do want is for women to leave this podcast and feel that they have a little more education so they can make sound decisions. I may not agree with the decision but at the end of the day, you get a little more information to keep you and the baby safe. That's what this podcast is about. Well that and old ladies having babies LOL.
Birth plans, one of the most popular topics in my office. I know many of you have probably seen the memes, or heard jokes about them, or maybe you've never really heard of them at all. Today I am going to help y'all make the ultimate birth plan that will make your obstetrician, family medicine physician, or midwife proud. First off, it doesn't have to be color coded. It does not have to be laminated. It doesn't have to be notarized either. Yes Mommas, there have been notarized birth plans. LOL. It just has to useful. Let this piece of paper speak for you when you can't. It's not about what essential oil you want to have in the diffuser or what music you want playing while you labor. You want the people taking care of you to look at this paper and say, “We know you and we know how to keep you safe”. Yes Mommas, you can have a birth plan that help the physicians and the nurses take better care of you. If you need help on making the perfect birth plan, then this episode is all for you! Your first prenatal visit is the most important visit. I mean they ALL are, so don't try to skip out after the first one. I know how some of us are so don't try to say Dr. San told me I only had to show up for day one and delivery. I want you to come to all your appointments. I say that your first appointment is your most important because it's when I can gather the most information that can determine the path of your pregnancy. Is this a 25-year-old with no high-risk medical history or is this a Mature Momma that's healthy at 40 year old or is this a 35 year old woman who has heart issues and a history of pulmonary embolism? Your past and current medical history determines a lot when it comes to how you will be monitoring during pregnancy. It also determines where you need to safely be delivered or even if I'm appropriate in caring for you. So yes, the first visit is a big deal. It is probably longest visit so be prepared to talk about all the things. On today's episode, I am going to give you a few tips to make the best of your first prenatal visit.
I know we are told that the biggest decision as a woman is who we choose, if we do, to spend the rest of our lives with. And that's very true when you think of life goals, financial goal, career goals, etc. but next to that, if you choose to have a family, the biggest decision is who will take care of you before pregnancy, during pregnancy, during labor and delivery and then postpartum. Oh my goodness. I didn't realize how big of a deal this was until I was deep into my training. Yall, I have seen the good, the great, the amazing, the bad, the ugly, and the WTF. 99% of my colleagues are amazing women and men that have devoted their life (Yes their LIFE) to women and the life of their unborn. 99% of us take you into our hearts and treat you like family. Obstetrical providers that aren't the same but for different reasons. It could be training, or bias, race, cultural, upbringing, or whatever. It is your duty as a Momma to make sure you are putting the life of yourself and your child in the best trained person you have in your area. You want a physician or midwife that views your life and the life of your child as a priority. On this episode, I'm going to give tips on how to find the perfect and safest Obstetrical team and birthing facility for you. From the moment women pee on that stick and see a positive indicator, they are instantly in love with the ball of cell growing in their belly or someone else's belly. I mean surrogacy is a thing. But how many of us really prepare ourselves before we start trying? How many of us as the hard questions with truthful answers? Do you even know what questions you should be asking yourself or those that take care of you? If you're trying for a pregnancy or not doing anything to prevent one you really need to ask yourself these questions. “Are you healthy enough to take on pregnancy” or “Is your hypertension under control” or “Are you on medications that could be harmful to you or the baby during pregnancy” or “Is your diabetes well controlled”. Another biggy that many of my patients don't want to talk about is “will my weight play a significant role in my pregnancy, labor, and delivery”? And I'm not only talking about obesity. These are all questions that should be asked and answered before pregnancy. Yes, for most women, it's exciting to get pregnant but Mommas, I want you to see it to the end. I want you to enjoy the Mature Momma life with your kids. As beautiful as pregnancy is, it can kill you if you're not optimized to your best health. As one of my good friends recently said, “Pregnancy is like having one foot inside a grave”. Scary, but so true. Your body is so vulnerable. So many systems are stretched and challenged during those 40 weeks. Things can change so quickly and if you're not optimized before pregnancy and monitored appropriately during pregnancy, you could lose your life. Today we will discuss the “Why”. Why is this space needed. Why do we need this tribe? Aren't all Mommas built the same? Shouldn't we just all figure it out as we go? Isn't this life easy? Doesn't everyone just breeze through pregnancy and childbirth. Super easy right?!?! Wrong. So I won't get to far into the numbers because we have forever together right? So I can dive into those another day. So if you've been living under a rock, you might not know that the Maternal Morbidity and Mortality rate in the United States is embarrassingly high. In a land where we have cars that run by electricity and Instapots that can cook frozen food in 15 minutes, we have thousands of women die during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. Some of these deaths and injuries were preventable. The prevention is in the education. The prevention is recognizing bias. The prevention is in better access. The prevention is in having a strong advocate. The prevention is also in…dare I say it, calling out racism. All of these things combined will help to significantly decrease the mortality rates. My why is simple, it's because I want to save lives. I want to help keep you safe. I want us to all be safe. So if this why speaks to you, hit the subscribe button and join the best Mature Momma Tribe Ever. By subscribing, you won't miss any episodes. Also make sure to share with all of your friends. What is “The Mature Momma Life” podcast. Is a space where we talk about pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the after but from the voices of Momma's that are in their thirties. I would say Mommas that fit the true definition of “Elderly Momma” which is over the age of 35 but once you hit 30, it's pretty much the same to me. Now why isn't this just a podcast for all Mommas? I'm not saying all Mommas aren't welcome as there aren't too many Mommas I meet and don't love but, I've had the pleasure of treating women in their teens and twenties compared to women in their thirties and trust me, it's completely different. Our conversations are different. The risks are different. Just completely different worlds. All ages are welcomed. We still need to know information to keep us Mature Mommas hip. Nothing worst than your kid saying a new phrase or talking about a new singer and you have no idea who or what they are talking about. We are going to be discussing topics before you are pregnant. Meaning, making sure your body is ready to undertake pregnancy. Yes, this is something that we should be doing at all ages but it's critical after the age of 35. We will discuss fertility at this age. Options on getting pregnant or having a child. We are going to talk about diseases that plague our bodies and how that effects pregnancy after 30, especially after 35. We are going to talk about ALL THE THINGS MATERTITY. We will also have topics after the little cherub is born. So that's discussions on parenting, being a great friend/tribe member and partner. So if this is what you need in your life, hit the play button and join in on today's episode. If you love what we are talking about, hit the subscribe button so you don't miss an episode.
