Do you ever feel like you are always changing and never get a chance to really catch your break and celebrate your progress? Well, guess what? Change is bound to happen in any organisation, whether we like it or not. This is what I talk about in the latest episode of The Positive Change Podcast, where I dive into the concept of impermanence and how it fits right into the world of organisations. I also take a closer look at the second law of thermodynamics, which states that all systems, including organisations, eventually decline in effectiveness and efficiency and trying to resist change and clinging to the same old status quo is like fighting a losing battle in the long haul. So, what should organisations do in the face of impermanence? Tune in to this eye-opening episode to find out. Have you ever wondered why, despite our best intentions, we sometimes struggle to fully embrace altruism? Isn't it an intriguing question that probes the complexities of human nature? While many of us strive to be kind and considerate, there are times when self-interest and personal concerns can overshadow our altruistic tendencies. So in this new episode of The Positive Change Podcast, I go deep into the relationship between ego and altruism and explain why developing a healthy ego benefits everyone. Ever feel like there's a tiny version of yourself, a voice inside your head, always advocating for your own wants and needs? That's your ego, your personal cheerleader. But here's the thing: this cheerleader can sometimes hog the limelight, making you hesitate, doubt, or prioritise yourself over others. It's like having a backstage struggle between self-interest and selflessness. But don't worry! We're not stuck in ego mode forever. According to psychologist C. Daniel Batson, genuine altruism involves caring for others without expecting anything in return, and he suggests that nurturing a healthy ego is the key. In his book "Altruism in Humans," Batson highlights finding the right balance between self-care and caring for others. When our ego is in check, we can break free from self-centeredness and make a positive impact for ourselves and all beings. So, join me in this podcast as I talk about how to nurture a healthy ego and altruistic spirit. Get ready to experience the joy and fulfilment that comes from selflessness. Are you in? Let's go! We've all experienced the pressure to conform to others' expectations that don't align with our True Selves—be it loved ones, the workplace, or society as a whole. And many of us recognise that choosing to fit in over standing out disconnects us from our authentic selves and often leads to dissatisfaction and frustration.
Leaders often face challenges in fostering positive change in organisations. We can feel as though we are facing a “brick wall of resistance”, unable to make progress on the things that matter most. This could be you, too.
Core to an organisation's reason for existing (and its longevity) is its Purpose — its deepest ‘why'. A strong and well-defined purpose is a cornerstone of an enduring organisation. It provides wavering the organisation and its people with clarity and focus as it navigates towards uncertain futures; it helps frame the myriad of decisions people will make along the journey; and, it supports people to align their personal wants and desires into a larger and more cohered collective drive towards “better”. But more importantly, when an organisation's purpose is focused on something greater than the organisation or any one person — towards humanity itself — then the purposeful and purpose-led organisation can significantly impact the world, far beyond the desire to earn profits. I may be stating the obvious here (or perhaps not), but in today's world, it's not enough for an organisation to simply exist to make a profit. Consumers and employees want more from the organisations they commit to … they are looking for something more meaningful. Organisations that fail to recognise this truth will not endure — especially in this transformational decade. So, if you're interested in exploring the concept of enduring life purpose and the higher calling in an organisational context, tune in to Season 3, Episode 8 of The Positive Change Podcast. We've discussed this topic before, but it's always relevant, and there's always more to uncover. Take advantage of this engaging and enlightening discussion. The Futures = Infinite Potential. As Peter Diamandis and other futurists have noted, we are living in a time of unprecedented abundance and innovation, but this comes with the challenge of adapting to a rapidly changing landscape.
Life is complex. We all experience this “truth” — seeking to stay present to, and ahead of, the countless variables that shape the thoughts and choices that define our lives. I was speaking to a friend of mine just last week about the importance of practising Embodied Grace in engaging with life – that sense of deep alignment with oneself and each moment regardless of what might be occurring for us. “How do you do this?” my friend asked. I answered honestly at that moment, “I'm not always sure.” But I do know that personal development is an essential aspect of remaining fully open to life's complexity (and is a cornerstone to embodying Embodied Grace!). Intentionally pursuing personal development is important.
Imagine a world where every person wakes up each day, eager to make a positive impact. Where each person brings their unique talents and abilities to all they pursue, using their 'secret sauce' to create meaningful change. That world can be a reality, starting with YOU. You see, when you understand your unique strengths and utilise them to their fullest extent, nothing can stand in your way. You become an unstoppable force. So, I invite you to tune in to this new episode of The Positive Change Podcast, where I answer a client's question of me … what's your “secret sauce”? Join me on a brief journey of self-reflection as I dive into my own unique qualities and share tips on how you can identify and apply your “x-factor” to build a future filled with hope, prosperity, and happiness. Tune in to The Positive Change Podcast and don't forget to let me know your thoughts.
The cornerstone to any successful change is CREATIVITY. In fact, all change starts with creativity — it is through the act of “creating” that the need for change is born. I believe that developing your creative thinking skills is vital to making meaningful change happen in your life. It's by thinking outside the box that you open up to a world of possibilities, get unstuck from old patterns and routines, discover new innovative ideas, and break free from the status quo. Paradoxically, creativity creates certainty. It's through the act of exploring and creating something new that the uncertainty inherent in any change becomes more known. In my latest episode of The Positive Change Podcast, I answer a listener's question about my creative approach and talk about the role of creativity in making change happen. Give it a listen and discover new ways to boost your creative thinking skills and overcome obstacles that hold you back from making change. ------- Watch this episode here: https://youtu.be/YQhexrD4wls ------- Find me on: IG: @richardharmer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/richardharmer.public Website: www.richardharmer.com Youtube: Dr. Richard Harmer --------- VIEW MORE POSITIVE CHANGE PODCAST EPISODES HERE: https://www.richardharmer.com/ThePositiveChangePodcast --------- Haven't left a review yet? For me, success is all about making meaningful progress towards what matters most to me. This episode of The Positive Change Podcast, the first for 2023, I answer a question from one of my listeners: What was your greatest success in 2022. Do I have to have only one “greatest success” for 2022? Of course not! Here's the thing, success isn't just about reaching the finish line. It's about the journey, and the small victories and progress we make along the way. By focusing on progress instead of just the end result, we can stay motivated, build momentum and ultimately feel a greater sense of accomplishment. So, join me on this podcast as we explore the concept of "achieving success by celebrating progress along the way" and how it can lead to more satisfying and enjoyable paths to success. ------- Watch this episode here: https://youtu.be/Qwi_SX51Vdw ------- Find me on: IG: @richardharmer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/richardharmer.public Website: www.richardharmer.com Youtube: Dr. Richard Harmer --------- VIEW MORE POSITIVE CHANGE PODCAST EPISODES HERE: https://www.richardharmer.com/ThePositiveChangePodcast --------- Haven't left a review yet? Ready, Set, Change — navigating the “messy middle” of change. In the last episode of The Positive Change Podcast, I explore the three phases of psychological transition through any significant change: Phase 1: Endings Phase 2: Neutral Zone Phase 3: New Beginnings In this episode (Part 2 of my Thriving Through Change masterclass recorded live with a client), I dive into Phase 2 and the “messy middle” of change. The problem is the Neutral Zone of change is often anything but neutral, which is why most change efforts take significantly longer than planned. (I could have spent a whole episode on the importance of practicing Radical Acceptance when in the Neutral zone of change as a way of making change go faster, but I'll leave that to another time). When navigating the middle phase of any change, it's important to recognise what needs to change and to ensure that both the external and observable aspects of change AND the internal and more subjective aspects of a change or considered, planned for, and implemented. But simply ensuring that all change efforts focus on what needs to change about mindsets, culture, behaviours, and structures isn't enough. You see, in the “messy middle” of change, the key thing that's changing (and often forgotten about) is the roles people play with each other—for example: “fixer,” “supporter,” “agitator,” “sounding board,” etc. When we experience “noise” or “tension” with others during change, it is often because the roles we play with others have changed, and we haven't realised. Renegotiating our role relations with others is essential to supporting a timely transition into the New Beginnings phase of the change journey. Ready. Set. Change! Constant change truly is the new norm for so many. Partnering with people and organisations as they strive to thrive through change is my “sweet spot” and I love supporting people to build the clarity and courage to navigate change successfully. There is no single approach to change (obviously!), but the Bridges Model of Change and Transition does provide a helpful mental model for how individuals and groups might journey through change and psychological transition. In the last month alone, I have delivered several short Masterclasses on how to thrive through change. For each, I have used the Bridges Model as a way of supporting people to understand where they might be “at” in their own process of change. So, in this first episode of Season 3 of The Positive Change Podcast, I decided to record myself delivering a recent Thriving Through Change Masterclass with a corporate client of mine. In this episode, I unpack: the core reason to initiate any change the difference between change and psychological transition the two foundational emotions people experience when change is announced and what to do about each, and the three fundamentals for helping people get focused on the future. In the next episode of The Positive Change Podcast, I'll dive into what I refer to as the “messy middle” of change and share why it can become messy and what to do about it so that change flows. The thing I love about producing The Positive Change Podcast every few weeks is that it's an opportunity for me to review my current work focus, and to reflect upon what is important about where I invest my time and energy. For the past two years, I've produced 27 episodes of this podcast across two seasons. Each season represents a change in focus for what I wanted to explore through The Positive Change Podcast—and what I thought mattered most to the change makers that listen to each episode. I've covered topics like facing your fear; naming, claiming, and exploring your purpose; finding and maintaining your life's flow; fostering positive mindsets for yourself and others; and my philosophy to running a good business (I've been running my own management consulting business for over 20 years now). And what I've noticed these past few episodes is that it's time, again, for me to ask that all-important question: Am I pursuing the right things in my life and work at this time? You see, you and I both have one important life to live. How we experience that one life is essential to what we focus on each day, week and year, and how we create a positive impact. So, in this episode, I take stock of The Positive Change Podcast, where it is at, and what might come next for the podcast in support of helping change makers deal with complex and transformational change. Establishing and building strong networks is an essential element of thriving as a change-maker and entrepreneur. As the saying goes, “a problem shared is a problem halved”. It's through our customer, client, family, and friendship networks (to name but a few networks) that we find the essential just-in-time support and guidance we need to overcome any challenge. The problem is, sometimes our relational networks are missing the x-factor … and often we don't even know it. Given how important deep relationship networks are to thriving in life and work, especially during times of change, it's essential that you regularly reflect upon the diversity and strength of your relationships. In this episode of The Positive Change Podcast, I unpack the four common mistakes that change makers, business owners and entrepreneurs make in establishing and maintaining authentic, relational networks. And in doing, I also uncover a gap compromising my own current relational network. As a collective society now is a high time to call upon more compassion towards ourselves and more so to each other. Cultivating compassion goes beyond feeling empathy, concern or pity for others. It develops the strength to cope with suffering, to take compassionate action and have the strong want to alleviate that suffering. Kindness goes a long way and is a great first step but compassion is what brings change to people's lives and makes a positive difference for everyone. There's one thing a lot of people often find hard to let go of– expectations. When our reality does not match our expectations, most of us would feel disappointed, frustrated; our minds react negatively. This disconnect makes it feel like our efforts are not enough or that ultimately we are not enough. We need to learn to understand our expectations of others, of situations, and of ourselves. We experience moments in life where we know and realize that we need to shift the course of our lives in order to be truly happy. These moments are often scary, or may make us feel uncertain BUT know that it will lead to a change that allows us to grow, evolve, and finally become who we were meant to be. I've said it before and it has been said by many, “Change starts with yourself” easy to say but of course not the easiest to do. I've been talking about positive change and how it is a wonderful thing to experience and how it's necessary for building success and happiness. BUT what I haven't discussed is how can someone tell that change is needed in their lives. More importantly, can a person tell if they are ready to undergo positive change? Change is an unavoidable constant in our lives. Some changes are not in our control but you'd be surprised to know that most changes need our active participation. But sometimes it can be hard to know when it's time to make a change. We can feel stuck, scared, or overwhelmed by the situation, and this causes us to worry over whether it really is time to make a change. So yes there is a way of knowing if we're ready for change. Regardless of whatever stage we are in our lives or any endeavor, we will be able to create positive if we know how to prepare for it and we can recognize the phases of going through change. Hesitation and doubts will come but the best way to welcome positive change in our lives is to be ready for it. Join me in this podcast episode as we go through the four fundamental experiences that we go through before undergoing a change in our lives. Learn about the indicators that let you know when you are ready for positive change. ------------ So, in relation to this episode, I am working on a FREE, simple Change Readiness Survey and Feedback Report to help people recognize when it's time for change; and how to ready themselves for that change. And that's where I need your help. Even though the assessment and report will be free for people, it also has to work. So, I invite you to fill in a short Change Readiness Survey - well, 2 actually. The FIRST is a primer asking about whether change is on your horizon. The SECOND (if a change is on your horizon) asks you about how prepared you are for that change. What changes do you want to make in any aspect of your life? Then proceed to think about whether you are able to do it or not. If you are able to do it, then start making these meaningful changes in your life. If your answer is that you're not able to make the change, I want you to think about the reason why. Because if the only thing that's stopping you is your doubt then the one thing you need to learn is SELF EFFICACY. This refers to your belief about your ability to effectively perform the tasks needed to attain a valued goal. Self-efficacy does not refer to your abilities but to how strongly you believe you can use your abilities to work toward goals. I've been involved in many significant change projects with organisations where people (including me) have talked a good game about change but haven't actually done anything to make that change happen. Yes, we've dreamed big and developed a solid plan for how that change would occur, but we haven't actually made it happen. And the #1 reason is: We failed to start creating that change. As an entrepreneur, maintaining a clear future direction is essential to thriving as an entrepreneur. But, too often entrepreneurs can feel constrained within their entrepreneurial adventure … on auto pilot without a clear sense of what the next successful step in their business involves. When you don't have a clear vision — a bold ‘why', ‘how' and ‘what' for how you make a difference to others through your business, then you can start to feel a failure. And that's the power of adopting a strength-based approach to change. Establishing a “provocative proposition” describes in VIVID DETAIL what you most want to realise through your business and it is supported by a clear and pragmatic set of ideas for how you will make that future vision real. In this episode of The Positive Change Podcast, we explore how Thriving Entrepreneurs use provocative propositions to inspire new thinking about how to turn their bold vision for their future into reality. So if you need more inspiration in your business, then this episode is for you. ------- Watch the video form here: https://youtu.be/FNYPVAkD0cA ------- Find me on: IG: @richardharmer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/richardharmer.public Website: https://www.richardharmer.com Youtube: Dr. Richard Harmer
How do you know when you've fallen out of flow in your business … and what do you do about it when you do? In this episode of The Positive Change Podcast, we talk about what to do when you think you are “off your game” in your business and when you recognise that you are working against yourself in pursuing your entrepreneurial adventure. Fundamental to realising that you've fallen out of flow in your business (and in your life) is understanding when you've placed your destiny—the creation and fulfillment of your own life's future possibilities, in other's hands. It can be easy to do even for the seasoned entrepreneur and change maker. Psychological research utilising the insights and observations of elite sportspeople, artists and musicians, and entrepreneurs, has identified eight “experience markers” that indicate when you are in-flow. And knowing these markers can help you to find your flow and stay connected with your highest potential. I'm not going to lie, starting and growing a business can be hard. As you pursue your entrepreneurial adventure you will face many unknowns and, at times, the learning curve needed to be successful is incredibly steep. But, that learning curve is also what makes entrepreneurship so much fun. In this episode of The Positive Change Podcast, we talk about what really makes a business and entrepreneur successful and it's not the illusion of “busy”. Put another way: “Busyness Success” ≠ “Business Success”. For the Overwhelmed Entrepreneur caught in the illusion of “busy” there are some pretty common reasons: being over-responsible and not asking for help; thinking you need to be across everything in your business, all of the time; failing to say “no” when you need to; and losing that all important connection to your vision, and getting caught doing the wrong work. If you are experiencing overwhelm, stressed or unable to keep up in your business then the question to ask yourself is, “why?” Oftentimes, it's because (unconsciously) we feel we have something to prove … to somebody. It doesn't need to be this way. In this episode we explore how to reconnect with your own inner confidence and follow your passions, purpose and potential. Remember: Your success leaves clues, so what clues are you noticing? --------- Register for our FREE #PositiveChange program today and learn 5 powerful ways of thinking to go beyond overwhelm and BECOME a thriving entrepreneur: https://www.richardharmer.com/PositiveChangeWaitlist ------- Find me on: IG: @richardharmer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/richardharmer.public Website: https://www.richardharmer.com Youtube: Dr. Richard Harmer

Every entrepreneur's strategy towards success is unique and that's why copying another entrepreneur's “success strategies” may not always work for you or your business. To succeed in business it's important to align your strategy to its implementation environment. And the same applies when pursuing greater positivity in your life, and business. In this episode of the Positive Change Podcast, we discuss a common mistake Overwhelmed Entrepreneurs make — looking to others and trying to emulate their success, rather than looking within oneself (and one's own business) and amplifying what is already working as the foundation to creating more success. In contrast, the Thriving Entrepreneur and Change Maker start by clearly defining the challenge they face for their business and naming what they know and don't know about that challenge. After this, the pathways forward to even greater positive momentum are clear to identify and to pursue. I believe that humanity is on the cusp of a radical and inspiring transformation. A transformation that invites all of us to become more connected with ourselves and with each other, and more caring and compassionate towards each other A transformation that inspires each one of us to discover and live our own unique life purpose - and where every person aspires to be a force for good in the world. A positive transformation grounded in hope and possibility. Now, you might think I'm unrealistic, but I believe that we change the world not by looking at, but by diving fully into it, and by the way each and every one of us chooses to live life. By choosing to pursue your passions, purpose and potential life can only become better.
Fundamentally, what I care about is realizing potential and supporting others to explore, create and liberate the potential for themselves and those around them. But, sometimes creating the changes needed to liberate new potential is not easy. What I have learnt over the years is that during periods of change and transformation, "where your attention goes your energy flows". Choosing to pay attention to the inherent positivity in a challenging situation can be very helpful in fostering the positivity and enthusiasm to overcome any barrier. he following six acts for fostering greater personal positivity can support you in bringing more positivity into your life, work and relationships: Act #1: Engage in random acts of positivity Act #2: Pay positivity forwards Act #3: Pause for positively Act #4: Prepare for positivity Act#5: Invite positivity (to your life's party) Act#6: Pursue positivity Until next week ...
Last week's revelation was a game change for me. In speaking to my experience I realised that I was failing to lean into a core mantra for my own life, work and leadership: Action Precedes Clarity. Well, this revelation opened up second, supporting life mantra: Proceed Until Apprehended. Underpinning this mantra is a realisation that no one is ever going to give you (or me) permission to pursue transformation, rather you need to give yourself permission to make things better fr yourself and for others. Further, there is an appreciation that when seeking to make things better you always have more clout than realise; that is, simply by pursuing something beyond yourself you have the power to influence. And finally, the recognition that willing situations or times of uncertainly it is important to communicate a clear vision for what is possible, one that you can aspire to and can invite others to join you in the pursuit of making that vision a closer reality. Have a good week everyone, and thanks for listening.
This week we're talking about making progress about the things you care about and the one mantra that has held me in good stead for much my adult working life. I've had a successful career as an organisational consultant working across corporate, government and not-for-profit organisations, both large and small, for more than a decade now. As I launch my next project, youschool.co, I have been thinking about the next step in my own life and my career. I really wanted to focus more of my intention, attention and efforts to giving back to social causes and support those people who are the future change-makers of our society and new world-creators for the future of humanity. So, this week's podcast talks about what I am facing in pursuing this vision.
Why do some people fail to pursue their full potential - because emotions are the fuel for our momentum we need to make sure our emotions are positive and flaming our fire within. We need to realise that each one of us is an emotional being living in a rational world and now, more than ever, it is important to fully experience emotions all the world has to offer.
I want to talk about the true intention of youschool.co. The tagline of youschool is:"Realise Your Potential" and our tagline speaks to ourΩ promise, which is to support to explore, create and liberate their potential. But, what is the true intention of youschool sits beneath this tagline. All of the programs we offer at youschool are deeply informed by developmental psychology and how individuals and groups learn, grow, develop and evolve. Development By Design is the true intention of all of our work.
Where things start to feel overly complex, it may be time to pause and consider: What is the most important element to pursue at this time? In this week's episode of revelations@youschool, Dr Richard Harmer reflects upon a current project that is beginning to feel too complex. And, in seeking to identify the essential essence of the project, discovers that the most important aspect of the program is the opportunity for those involved to get face-to-face with their own human frailty - that aspect of who they are that is a the heart of what holds them back from realising their fullest potential.
Have you ever stopped to wonder if the choices you make in life, work and relationships are truly your own? In this episode of revelations@youschool, Dr Richard Harmer draws upon ideas taken from Adaptive Leadership theory and practice. Each one of us has a predetermined (gifted at birth) socialised status that we then leverage through life to optimise our earned (social) rank. And if you are born with life's golden ticket, you simply need to live into these gifted opportunities. But each one of us can become significantly more than our privilege. It is through the exploration and liberation of our personal power that we overcome life's phantom life choices - the choices we make that are, in fact, born from privilege. In contrast, personalised choices are the choices we make that are seeded by a deep understanding of our personal purpose, morals and ethics, and values.
What if the thing we are most afraid of in life is realising our potential? In this episode of revelations@youschool we explore this possibility.
I have wanted to make a podcast for years. I am really fascinated by how people create the time and have the courage to put themselves out there and speak about what is true for them. With the launch of youschool.co, the time is right to speak to my revelations and my potential.
