What if the fastest way to rebuild your career confidence isn't another resume update or headline hack, but a game you play at the holiday dinner table? In this quick, punchy episode, I share the deceptively simple activity I first tried with my own family and how it genuinely changed how I see myself and my career.Instead of diving into another round of job searching advice, I break down the power of this crowdsourced strengths game and why hearing the real, non-sarcastic things your loved ones admire about you hits differently (especially when you're feeling stuck or rejected). I'll show you exactly how to play so it's not awkward and how to use what you hear to interrupt those negative self-talk spirals. If you're feeling discouraged, wrestling with imposter syndrome, or just want to remind yourself what you actually bring to the table (career-wise, not just the mashed potatoes), this episode is your permission slip to get radically honest feedback from the people who know you best. Try this game, and you'll realize you're more resilient and capable than your circumstances would have you believe. So go ahead, hit play and let's dive in.1:49 – How to Use Crowdsourced Feedback From Loved Ones to Interrupt Negative Self-Talk02:03 – The Real Reason Career Setbacks Feel Personal and How to Break Free from That Spiral 03:06 – How to Make Sharing Strengths Fun (Even with Sarcastic Families!)05:10 – The Surprising Power of Hearing What Others Admire About You (Especially When You Can't See It Yourself) and Why Your Current Circumstances Aren't Your Identity07:06 – How to Store and Use Positivity for Your Next Spiral

Some cars have gullwing doors, like the DeLorean in Back to the Future. They look amazing — but why don't more cars have them? As you'll hear, there are several surprising (and practical) reasons why this futuristic design never became mainstream and probably never will. https://www.dacemotorgroup.co.uk/blog/the-history-of-gullwing-doors-and-why-they-were-so-rare If you've ever felt truly hopeless, you already understand the extraordinary power of hope — because when it's gone, everything changes. Hope gives us direction, energy, and purpose. It's what gets us up in the morning and helps us persevere through uncertainty. Psychologist and researcher Dr. Julia Garcia, author of The 5 Habits of Hope: Stories and Strategies to Help You Find Your Way (https://amzn.to/4hKtWNd), joins me to explore how hope works in the brain, how to build more of it in your life, and why it's one of the most powerful forces in human psychology. You have a sixth sense — and it's not psychic. It's called interoception, your ability to sense what's happening inside your body. Hunger, thirst, fatigue, and even intuition are all part of this hidden system that connects body and mind. Science journalist Caroline Williams, author of Inner Sense: How the New Science of Interoception Can Revolutionize Your Health (https://amzn.to/4oN8Boo), reveals what researchers are discovering about this remarkable sense — and how tuning into it can improve your health, focus, and emotional well-being. And finally, if you've ever had a fruit fly land in your glass of wine, you know how fast they can find you — and ruin a drink. But how do they track it down so quickly, and why does even one tiny fly spoil the whole glass? The answer is both fascinating and a little gross. https://www.livescience.com/7256-fruit-flies-find-wine.html?utm PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! Have you ever struggled with unforgiveness? If we're honest I believe we all have. But that's not how God wants us to live. Even though He commands us to forgive, it's not just to let the other person off the hook. He wants us to forgive because He knows how holding onto resentment can cause a cancer to grow in our hearts, hurting us so much more than the person who caused the hurt. In this episode I'll share several instances where God convicted me of my unforgiving heart as well as a parable where Jesus shows us how ungrateful we are when we don't forgive. What if reinvention isn't about doing more at all? What if it's about doing less? In this episode, I share the deeper truth about personal growth: that the most profound change often begins with subtraction, not striving to do more. Drawing from my own recent season of reinvention, I explore how letting go — of identities, expectations, and incompletions — creates the space for your most authentic self to emerge. When you stop forcing what no longer fits, you stop living from effort and start living from essence. What we explore: The difference between striving for change and allowing transformation Why letting go can feel radical but is actually the most natural thing How "incompletions" quietly drain energy and block your evolution Three gentle ways to begin releasing what no longer serves you Why stillness is not stagnation — it's the birthplace of reinvention This isn't about becoming someone new. It's about remembering who you are beneath the layers of doing, proving, and performing. Reinvention becomes simple when you stop chasing it and start listening to what's ready to fall away. Have you ever pointed someone to Jesus or his Word and it only made matters worse? Sometimes the first step in healing can stir up dormant evil. In Mark 9:14-29, Jesus comes from transfiguration glory and faces a demonic nightmare, failing disciples, and a desperate father crying, "I believe; help my unbelief!" This expository sermon reveals two life-changing lessons for Christians today: (1) God calls us to the valley, not the mountaintop—bring grace to "one boy" at a time; (2) Things often get worse before they get better when God's Word confronts sin and darkness. My sermons are the fruit of nearly 30 years of pastoral ministry, biblical counseling, formal seminary training, and a lifelong passion for God's Word. Professor Andrew Wilson from NYU explains why many common-sense ideas in artificial intelligence might be wrong. For decades, the rule of thumb in machine learning has been to fear complexity. The thinking goes: if your model has too many parameters (is "too complex") for the amount of data you have, it will "overfit" by essentially memorizing the data instead of learning the underlying patterns. This leads to poor performance on new, unseen data. This is known as the classic "bias-variance trade-off" i.e. a balancing act between a model that's too simple and one that's too complex.**SPONSOR MESSAGES**—Tufa AI Labs is an AI research lab based in Zurich. **They are hiring ML research engineers!** This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with one of the best labs in EuropeContact Benjamin Crouzier - https://tufalabs.ai/ —Take the Prolific human data survey - https://www.prolific.com/humandatasurvey?utm_source=mlst and be the first to see the results and benchmark their practices against the wider community!—cyber•Fund https://cyber.fund/?utm_source=mlst is a founder-led investment firm accelerating the cybernetic economyOct SF conference - https://dagihouse.com/?utm_source=mlst - Joscha Bach keynoting(!) + OAI, Anthropic, NVDA,++Hiring a SF VC Principal: https://talent.cyber.fund/companies/cyber-fund-2/jobs/57674170-ai-investment-principal#content?utm_source=mlstSubmit investment deck: https://cyber.fund/contact?utm_source=mlst— Description Continued:Professor Wilson challenges this fundamental belief (fearing complexity). He makes a few surprising points:**Bigger Can Be Better**: massive models don't just get more flexible; they also develop a stronger "simplicity bias". So, if your model is overfitting, the solution might paradoxically be to make it even bigger.**The "Bias-Variance Trade-off" is a Misnomer**: Wilson claims you don't actually have to trade one for the other. You can have a model that is incredibly expressive and flexible while also being strongly biased toward simple solutions. He points to the "double descent" phenomenon, where performance first gets worse as models get more complex, but then surprisingly starts getting better again.**Honest Beliefs and Bayesian Thinking**: His core philosophy is that we should build models that honestly represent our beliefs about the world. We believe the world is complex, so our models should be expressive. But we also believe in Occam's razor—that the simplest explanation is often the best. He champions Bayesian methods, which naturally balance these two ideas through a process called marginalization, which he describes as an automatic Occam's razor.TOC:[00:00:00] Introduction and Thesis[00:04:19] Challenging Conventional Wisdom[00:11:17] The Philosophy of a Scientist-Engineer[00:16:47] Expressiveness, Overfitting, and Bias[00:28:15] Understanding, Compression, and Kolmogorov Complexity[01:05:06] The Surprising Power of Generalization[01:13:21] The Elegance of Bayesian Inference[01:33:02] The Geometry of Learning[01:46:28] Practical Advice and The Future of AIProf. Andrew Gordon Wilson:https://x.com/andrewgwilshttps://cims.nyu.edu/~andrewgw/https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=twWX2LIAAAAJ&hl=en https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aja0kZeWRy4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEp4TOrkwV4 TRANSCRIPT:https://app.rescript.info/public/share/H4Io1Y7Rr54MM05FuZgAv4yphoukCfkqokyzSYJwCK8Hosts:Dr. Tim Scarfe / Dr. Keith Duggar (MIT Ph.D)REFS:Deep Learning is Not So Mysterious or Different [Andrew Gordon Wilson]https://arxiv.org/abs/2503.02113Bayesian Deep Learning and a Probabilistic Perspective of Generalization [Andrew Gordon Wilson, Pavel Izmailov]https://arxiv.org/abs/2002.08791Compute-Optimal LLMs Provably Generalize Better With Scale [Marc Finzi, Sanyam Kapoor, Diego Granziol, Anming Gu, Christopher De Sa, J. Imagine you're looking at a box of chocolates, knowing you've already had at least three too many. Your hostess is holding out the box to you, saying, “Have just one more. It couldn't hurt.” It's hard to actually know what one more would do. That “one more” candy might be the one that pulls out your filling. That “one more” episode of your favorite Netflix show might turn into an hours-long binge watch. That “one more” task before you leave the house might be the one that makes you miss your train. But there's the other side of “one more” too. The extra rep in the gym that builds muscle and stamina. The extra pinch of spice that makes a dish delectable. That extra touch to anything handmade that makes it unique and treasured. Those are just a few examples of the beneficial power of “one more.” There are lots of opportunities for “one mores” in our harp playing, both helpful and distinctly unhelpful. When you know which of those extras you should avoid, you can stay out of some of the most problematic pitfalls for any harpist. When you know which ones have the power to move your playing ahead, that's almost like magic. But there's no magic to it, just a little information, and that's what I'm going to give you today. I'll give you the do's and dont's of the extra step, when it's worth it and when you'd be better off having stayed in bed. In fact, I'll share three things that you absolutely must avoid, and I'll tell you why. And we'll counter those with seven “one more” things that will multiply your efforts in ways you might not expect. There's a lot to talk about, so let's get started.. The Uplift app is here! Try it free for 30 days Let's start with a truth that might shake up everything you've been taught: You were never created to move your body just to take up less space. I know—it's radical in a culture that worships “smaller,” but it's time we unlearn that noise and step into something better. Today, we're flipping the script on movement. Because let's be real—too often, it's been sold to us as punishment. As a way to earn worth or chase perfection. But that's not God's heart for you. What if movement wasn't about shrinking, but about celebrating? About stepping into your God-given strength, owning your energy, and living fully present in the body He designed for you? This episode is all about reclaiming movement—not to fix yourself, but to honor who you already are. It's a fresh perspective that'll shift how you move, why you move, and how you show up in your life with boldness and joy. There's a deep irony that happens to people who chase validation and power at all costs: They're the ones who end up exhausted, paranoid, alone, burnt out, bitter, and resentful in the long-term. If it hasn't happened yet, it's only a matter of time. The trouble is, many high achievers fall into this insidious trap of self-sabotage. You may have even noticed some of the signs starting to emerge in your life. There is a solution to this. A way where you build trust with your inner system, and get peace as the result. But it won't be easy. The solution? Developing your sense of moral character and staying consistent to your values, even when (or perhaps especially when) it's hard. In today's show, you'll discover why moral character is a prerequisite to living a long and happy life, the real world cost to your body and health when you don't live in accordance to your values, and why your morality can give you a deeper meaning of success. Listen now. Show Highlights Include: How developing your moral character will help you sleep at night, free you from your anxieties, and let you set down the mask you've been wearing (3:02) The real world cost to your health when you betray your values backed by scientific research (5:57) This question will change your view of success from one that looks good on paper to one that makes life worth living (7:44) The biological and evolutionary reason for developing your moral compass (8:08) How developing good character will make you a better partner - in both the bedroom and the boardroom (9:54) The “investment in your nervous system” mindset shift to stop seeing moral virtue as a sacrifice (22:10) For more about David Tian, go here: https://www.davidtianphd.com/about/ Want more success in leadership, deeper connections, or a greater sense of fulfillment? How Fitness Actually Makes You Happier: Unlock Joy Through Self-Care and Movement Discover the transformative power of fitness in boosting your happiness levels. In this eye-opening video, "How Fitness Actually Makes You Happier," we explore the science-backed connection between physical activity, mental well-being, and true fulfillment. If you're searching for ways to improve mental health through exercise, reduce stress with workouts, or find lasting joy via self-care routines, this is your guide. Learn how prioritizing your fitness isn't selfish—it's essential for radiating positivity and supporting those around you. Today, I want to talk to you about something profoundly simple yet staggeringly overlooked: the absolute necessity of taking care of yourself first. Not as a selfish act, but as the foundation upon which you can truly be of service to others. And woven into this, I'll delve into why fitness—both mental and physical—plays such a pivotal role in your overall happiness. This isn't just feel-good advice; it's a blueprint for living a life that's not only sustainable but radiant with purpose and joy. Let me start with a story we've all heard but perhaps not fully internalized: the airplane oxygen mask analogy. You're buckling in for takeoff, and the flight attendant drones on about safety procedures. "In the event of a loss of cabin pressure," they say, "secure your own mask before assisting others." Why? Because if you're gasping for air, fumbling in panic, how on earth are you going to help the child next to you, or the elderly passenger across the aisle? It's instinctual to want to rush to aid those we love first, but the harsh truth is that neglecting your own needs renders you useless—or worse, a liability—to everyone around you. This principle extends far beyond emergencies in the sky; it's the core of everyday life. Imagine you're a parent, juggling work, kids, and a thousand obligations. If you're running on empty—sleep-deprived, stressed, and eating junk—you snap at your children, zone out during family dinners, and bring a cloud of negativity home. But if you prioritize your well-being—carving out time for a walk, a healthy meal, or even five minutes of meditation—you show up as the patient, energetic parent who listens, plays, and teaches by example. You're not just surviving; you're thriving, and that energy spills over, lifting everyone up. The same holds in friendships, relationships, and even professional settings. Think about it: when was the last time you tried to support a friend through a crisis while battling your own burnout? Your advice comes out half-hearted, your empathy feels forced. But when you're centered, rested, and strong, your words carry weight, your presence is a balm. Self-care isn't indulgence; it's the prerequisite for genuine altruism. As the saying goes, you can't pour from an empty cup. By filling yours first, you ensure there's plenty to share. Now, let's unpack why this matters on a deeper level. In a world that's increasingly interconnected yet isolating, we're bombarded with demands—from social media's highlight reels to the relentless pace of modern work. It's easy to fall into the trap of people-pleasing, of putting everyone else's needs ahead of your own until you're depleted. But here's the irony: when you neglect yourself, you diminish your capacity to contribute meaningfully. Studies in psychology, like those on caregiver burnout, show that individuals who prioritize self-care are more resilient helpers. They experience less compassion fatigue and sustain their efforts longer. It's not about being selfish; it's about being strategic. By investing in yourself, you multiply your impact on the world. Building on this foundation, fitness emerges as a key driver of happiness. Regular exercise releases endorphins—nature's mood boosters—reducing anxiety and depression while enhancing self-esteem. Whether it's yoga for mental clarity, weightlifting for strength, or running for euphoria, physical activity rewires your brain for positivity. Research from Harvard shows that consistent workouts can be as effective as antidepressants for mild depression. Incorporate fitness into your routine: start with 30 minutes daily, blend cardio and strength training, and pair it with mindfulness. The result? Sharper focus, better sleep, and deeper connections. Fitness isn't just about aesthetics; it's your pathway to authentic joy, empowering you to live fully and inspire others. Happy July—so excited to be back with you to talk about one of my favorite books I've read lately, Dr. Michael Norton's The Ritual Effect: From Habit to Ritual, Harness the Surprising Power of Everyday Actions, which came out April 9, 2024. We have talked at length about habits on the show, but today, ritual gets its due. Dr. Norton explains what ritual is, and how, in his words, ritual can shift our lives from black and white to Technicolor. We talk about the power of ritual, what the difference is between habit and ritual, how ritual can change us and help us find the more we are seeking (again, in Dr. Norton's words), how rituals emerge in the first place, if there is such a thing as a bad ritual, and if a person can overdo rituals or have too many rituals. We talk about everything from rituals in marriage—definitely pay attention to the clinking forks story—to ritual in grief, and how he's felt about the overwhelmingly positive response to the book since it came out over a year ago. Dr. Norton is a professor of business administration at the Harvard Business School; he is a longtime expert on human behavior, and he has also co-authored with Elizabeth Dunn Happy Money: The Science of Happier Spending. His TEDx talk, “How to Buy Happiness,” has been viewed nearly 4.5 million times, and you may have seen his work in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Scientific American, and numerous other outlets from print to television, radio, and podcast. We're certainly happy to have him on this podcast. The Ritual Effect: From Habit to Ritual, Harness the Surprising Power of Everyday Actions by Dr. Michael Norton

"So teach us to number our days, that we may get a heart of wisdom." - Psalm 90:12 If you're a few years from retirement and your savings aren't quite where you want them, you might feel like you've run out of time. But maybe you don't need a time machine to solve the problem. Today, Matt Bell joins us with some encouraging words about beefing up retirement savings.Matt Bell is the Managing Editor at Sound Mind Investing, an underwriter of Faith & Finance. The Surprising Power of Working a Little LongerIn 2018, a Stanford study called The Power of Working Longer made a compelling discovery: delaying retirement by just three to six months can have the same impact on retirement readiness as saving an additional 1% of income every year for 30 years.Yes, really. This is largely due to two factors:Higher Social Security Benefits – For every month you delay past full retirement age, your benefit increases by 2/3 of 1% (8% annually). Better Annuity Rates – The older you are when purchasing an annuity, the more monthly income you'll receive for the same investment. But there's a caveat: the study is based on specific assumptions that may not match your financial situation. What the Study Assumes—and Why It MattersThe Stanford study uses a fictional worker named “John” who:Started saving at age 36Saved 6% of income and received a 3% matchRetired at 66 and claimed Social Security immediatelyUsed all savings to buy an inflation-indexed annuityIn reality, your income, savings rate, Social Security timing, and withdrawal strategy may differ widely. Not to mention, indexed annuities like the one in the study are no longer widely available. So while the study provides encouragement, its specifics shouldn't be universally applied. If you can delay claiming Social Security, it can significantly boost your lifelong income. For example, waiting until age 70 instead of 66 could result in a monthly check that's 24% higher. You'd need to live roughly 12 more years to “break even,” but many retirees today are living well into their 80s and beyond.Social Security is essentially a government-backed, inflation-adjusted annuity, making it a powerful foundation for retirement income.More Benefits to Working LongerBeyond Social Security, staying employed offers additional financial and emotional perks:More Contributions – Additional working years allow you to save more and delay withdrawals.Shorter Retirement Span – Fewer retirement years mean your nest egg doesn't have to stretch as far.Health & Community – Work often provides routine, purpose, and social interaction—elements many retirees miss.Working longer isn't just a financial decision—it impacts your time, relationships, and expectations. If you've long looked forward to travel, family time, or volunteering, extending your career might feel like a loss. That's why it's essential to consider both the math and the meaning.Couples should prayerfully approach retirement planning together. Decisions about timing affect both spouses, especially when only one is working. Unequal expectations can lead to tension, so it's essential to:Talk openly about your hopes and concernsUnderstand your financial picture as a teamChoose unity over independence in decision-makingThis is one of the most crucial decisions you'll make as a couple. How Much Do You Really Need? You may have heard that you need 70–80% of your pre-retirement income. That's a good rule of thumb, but it's far better to run the numbers yourself. Some costs (like commuting or saving for retirement) may go down. Others (like healthcare or travel) may go up. The best approach? Create a post-retirement budget based on your unique goals and lifestyle. If you're behind on retirement savings, don't panic—and don't go it alone. Tools on the Social Security website can help you run scenarios based on your age and income. Brokerages like Fidelity or Schwab offer annuity estimators. Most importantly, seek wise counsel and pray through your decisions with your spouse. If you'd like to read the full article from Sound Mind Investing that we discussed during this episode, read Matt's article titled Retirement Preparedness—What a Difference a Little Time Can Make at SoundMindInvesting.com. BONUS: Software Engineers are Paid to Solve Problems, Not Write Code! With John Crickett In this BONUS episode, we explore a thought-provoking LinkedIn post by John Crickett that challenges a fundamental misconception in software engineering. John shares insights on why engineers should focus on problem-solving rather than just coding, how to develop business context understanding, and why this shift in perspective is crucial in the age of AI. Beyond Writing Code: Understanding the True Value of Software Engineering "A lot of us come to software engineering because we care about building, and missed the goal: solving a problem for a customer." John Crickett explains the fundamental disconnect many software engineers experience in their careers. While many enter the field with a passion for building and coding, they often lose sight of the ultimate purpose: solving real problems for customers. This misalignment can lead to creating technically impressive solutions that fail to address actual business needs. John emphasizes that the most valuable engineers are those who can bridge the gap between technical implementation and business value. In this section, we refer to John's Coding Challenges and Developing Skills websites. The Isolation Problem in Engineering Teams "We have insulated people from seeing and interacting with customers, perhaps because we were afraid they would create a problem with customers." One of the key issues John identifies is how engineering teams are often deliberately separated from customers and end-users. This isolation, while sometimes implemented with good intentions, prevents engineers from gaining crucial context about the problems they're trying to solve. John shares his early career experience of participating in the sales process for software projects, which gave him valuable insights into customer needs. He highlights the Extreme Programming (XP) approach, which advocates for having the customer "in the room" to provide direct and immediate feedback, creating a tighter feedback loop between problem identification and solution implementation. In this segment, we refer to the book XP Explained by Kent Beck. The AI Replacement Risk "If all you are doing is taking a ticket that is fully spec'ed out, and coding it, then an LLM could also do that. The value is in understanding the problem." In a world where Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly capable of generating code, John warns that engineers who define themselves solely as coders face a significant risk of obsolescence. The true differentiation and value come from understanding the business domain and problem space—abilities that current AI tools haven't mastered. John advises engineers to develop domain knowledge specific to their business or customers, as this expertise allows them to contribute uniquely valuable insights beyond mere code implementation. Cultivating Business Context Understanding "Be curious about what the goal is behind the code you need to write. When people tell you to build, you need to be curious about why you are being asked to build that particular solution." John offers practical advice for engineers looking to develop better business context understanding. The key is cultivating genuine curiosity about the "why" behind coding tasks and features. By questioning requirements and understanding the business goals driving technical decisions, engineers can transform their role from merely delivering code to providing valuable services and solutions. This approach allows engineers to contribute more meaningfully and become partners in business success rather than just implementers. Building the Right Engineering Culture "Code is always a liability, sometimes it's an asset. The process starts with hiring the CTO—the people at the top. You get the team that reflects your values." Creating an engineering culture that values problem-solving over code production starts at the leadership level. John emphasizes that the values demonstrated by technical leadership will cascade throughout the organization. He notes the counter-intuitive truth that code itself is inherently a liability (requiring maintenance, updates, and potential refactoring), only becoming an asset when it effectively solves business problems. Building a team that understands this distinction begins with leadership that demonstrates curiosity about the business domain and encourages engineers to do the same. The Power of Asking Questions "Be curious, ask more questions." For engineers looking to make the shift from coder to problem-solver, John recommends developing the skill of asking good questions. He points to Harvard Business Review's article on "The Surprising Power of Questions" as a valuable resource. The ability to ask insightful questions about business needs, user requirements, and problem definitions allows engineers to uncover the true challenges beneath surface-level requirements. This curiosity-driven approach not only leads to better solutions but also positions engineers as valuable contributors to business strategy. In this segment, we refer to the article in HBR titled The Surprising Power of Questions.
