"So teach us to number our days, that we may get a heart of wisdom." - Psalm 90:12 If you're a few years from retirement and your savings aren't quite where you want them, you might feel like you've run out of time. But maybe you don't need a time machine to solve the problem. Today, Matt Bell joins us with some encouraging words about beefing up retirement savings.Matt Bell is the Managing Editor at Sound Mind Investing, an underwriter of Faith & Finance. The Surprising Power of Working a Little LongerIn 2018, a Stanford study called The Power of Working Longer made a compelling discovery: delaying retirement by just three to six months can have the same impact on retirement readiness as saving an additional 1% of income every year for 30 years.Yes, really. This is largely due to two factors:Higher Social Security Benefits – For every month you delay past full retirement age, your benefit increases by 2/3 of 1% (8% annually). Better Annuity Rates – The older you are when purchasing an annuity, the more monthly income you'll receive for the same investment. But there's a caveat: the study is based on specific assumptions that may not match your financial situation. What the Study Assumes—and Why It MattersThe Stanford study uses a fictional worker named “John” who:Started saving at age 36Saved 6% of income and received a 3% matchRetired at 66 and claimed Social Security immediatelyUsed all savings to buy an inflation-indexed annuityIn reality, your income, savings rate, Social Security timing, and withdrawal strategy may differ widely. Not to mention, indexed annuities like the one in the study are no longer widely available. So while the study provides encouragement, its specifics shouldn't be universally applied. If you can delay claiming Social Security, it can significantly boost your lifelong income. For example, waiting until age 70 instead of 66 could result in a monthly check that's 24% higher. You'd need to live roughly 12 more years to “break even,” but many retirees today are living well into their 80s and beyond.Social Security is essentially a government-backed, inflation-adjusted annuity, making it a powerful foundation for retirement income.More Benefits to Working LongerBeyond Social Security, staying employed offers additional financial and emotional perks:More Contributions – Additional working years allow you to save more and delay withdrawals.Shorter Retirement Span – Fewer retirement years mean your nest egg doesn't have to stretch as far.Health & Community – Work often provides routine, purpose, and social interaction—elements many retirees miss.Working longer isn't just a financial decision—it impacts your time, relationships, and expectations. If you've long looked forward to travel, family time, or volunteering, extending your career might feel like a loss. That's why it's essential to consider both the math and the meaning.Couples should prayerfully approach retirement planning together. Decisions about timing affect both spouses, especially when only one is working. Unequal expectations can lead to tension, so it's essential to:Talk openly about your hopes and concernsUnderstand your financial picture as a teamChoose unity over independence in decision-makingThis is one of the most crucial decisions you'll make as a couple. How Much Do You Really Need? You may have heard that you need 70–80% of your pre-retirement income. That's a good rule of thumb, but it's far better to run the numbers yourself. Some costs (like commuting or saving for retirement) may go down. Others (like healthcare or travel) may go up. The best approach? Create a post-retirement budget based on your unique goals and lifestyle. If you're behind on retirement savings, don't panic—and don't go it alone. Tools on the Social Security website can help you run scenarios based on your age and income. Brokerages like Fidelity or Schwab offer annuity estimators. Most importantly, seek wise counsel and pray through your decisions with your spouse. If you'd like to read the full article from Sound Mind Investing that we discussed during this episode, read Matt's article titled Retirement Preparedness—What a Difference a Little Time Can Make at SoundMindInvesting.com. Discussion Questions:Sermon Overview Align your life with the real Jesus.#1: Align your trust with the astonishing power of Jesus (vv. 37-43a)#2: Align your priorities with the perplexing priority of Jesus (vv. 43b-45)#3: Align your relationships with the unconventional people of Jesus. (vv. 46-50)Digging Deeper Read Luke 9:37-501. What circumstances make it challenging for you to trust in Jesus? (e.g., work, family, parenting, health, future, money, etc).2. What would it look like to deeply trust in Jesus' astonishing power for that circumstance? As a group, consider if there are passages that relate.3. Since exploring or following Jesus, what has surprised you about who he is?4. Jesus was compassionate with the needs in front of him without losing sight of his primary mission to save sinners through his death and resurrection. What needs are in the world around you that God may be calling you to address?5. The priority of Jesus' life was to go to the cross and die. What priority does the gospel of Jesus have in your life? How does it show up?6. Are there other things in your life that you find can, at times, replace the gospel of Jesus as your first priority? Please share.7. How can we help one another guard against this?8. The disciples were seeking greatness by comparing themselves to one another. Jesus offers greatness by means of a relationship with him. Why is the latter avenue for greatness far better?9. True greatness involves humble service to all out of obedience to Jesus. Does this characterize your life? If so, how? If not, what would it look like to grow?10. The disciples were hesitant about other people joining their tribe (see vv. 49-50). Are there ways you can feel territorial as you look at other Christians?11. Do you look at other Christians or ministries or churches with a prideful eye of skepticism? If so, don't name anyone in particular, but share how Jesus' words in verse 50 can be a help to you. Prayer
When we talk about what makes a great leader, we tend to focus on confidence, decisiveness, and maybe even charisma. Less often do we talk about humility. And yet, humility, according to psychologist Dr. Simon Moss, may be the trait that unlocks the most growth, resilience, collaboration, and trust. In this episode, Dart and Simon talk about why humility isn't the opposite of confidence, how future clarity increases self-awareness, and how organizations can be structured to reward groundedness instead of ego. Dr. Simon Moss is a psychologist and Dean of Graduate Research at the University of Wollongong. His research focuses on workplace behavior, ethical leadership, and the psychological conditions that promote wellbeing, performance, and integrity at work.In this episode, Dart and Simon discuss:- The difference between humility and insecurity- Why humble leaders often drive stronger performance- How clarity about the future shapes grounded leadership- The cultural conditions that reward narcissism- The relationship between time pressure and defensiveness- How to design humility into hiring, leadership, and culture- The mission of Radical Humility- And other topics…Dr. Simon Moss is a registered psychologist and the Dean of Graduate Research at the University of Wollongong. BONUS: Software Engineers are Paid to Solve Problems, Not Write Code! With John Crickett In this BONUS episode, we explore a thought-provoking LinkedIn post by John Crickett that challenges a fundamental misconception in software engineering. John shares insights on why engineers should focus on problem-solving rather than just coding, how to develop business context understanding, and why this shift in perspective is crucial in the age of AI. Beyond Writing Code: Understanding the True Value of Software Engineering "A lot of us come to software engineering because we care about building, and missed the goal: solving a problem for a customer." John Crickett explains the fundamental disconnect many software engineers experience in their careers. While many enter the field with a passion for building and coding, they often lose sight of the ultimate purpose: solving real problems for customers. This misalignment can lead to creating technically impressive solutions that fail to address actual business needs. John emphasizes that the most valuable engineers are those who can bridge the gap between technical implementation and business value. In this section, we refer to John's Coding Challenges and Developing Skills websites. The Isolation Problem in Engineering Teams "We have insulated people from seeing and interacting with customers, perhaps because we were afraid they would create a problem with customers." One of the key issues John identifies is how engineering teams are often deliberately separated from customers and end-users. This isolation, while sometimes implemented with good intentions, prevents engineers from gaining crucial context about the problems they're trying to solve. John shares his early career experience of participating in the sales process for software projects, which gave him valuable insights into customer needs. He highlights the Extreme Programming (XP) approach, which advocates for having the customer "in the room" to provide direct and immediate feedback, creating a tighter feedback loop between problem identification and solution implementation. In this segment, we refer to the book XP Explained by Kent Beck. The AI Replacement Risk "If all you are doing is taking a ticket that is fully spec'ed out, and coding it, then an LLM could also do that. The value is in understanding the problem." In a world where Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly capable of generating code, John warns that engineers who define themselves solely as coders face a significant risk of obsolescence. The true differentiation and value come from understanding the business domain and problem space—abilities that current AI tools haven't mastered. John advises engineers to develop domain knowledge specific to their business or customers, as this expertise allows them to contribute uniquely valuable insights beyond mere code implementation. Cultivating Business Context Understanding "Be curious about what the goal is behind the code you need to write. When people tell you to build, you need to be curious about why you are being asked to build that particular solution." John offers practical advice for engineers looking to develop better business context understanding. The key is cultivating genuine curiosity about the "why" behind coding tasks and features. By questioning requirements and understanding the business goals driving technical decisions, engineers can transform their role from merely delivering code to providing valuable services and solutions. This approach allows engineers to contribute more meaningfully and become partners in business success rather than just implementers. Building the Right Engineering Culture "Code is always a liability, sometimes it's an asset. The process starts with hiring the CTO—the people at the top. You get the team that reflects your values." Creating an engineering culture that values problem-solving over code production starts at the leadership level. John emphasizes that the values demonstrated by technical leadership will cascade throughout the organization. He notes the counter-intuitive truth that code itself is inherently a liability (requiring maintenance, updates, and potential refactoring), only becoming an asset when it effectively solves business problems. Building a team that understands this distinction begins with leadership that demonstrates curiosity about the business domain and encourages engineers to do the same. The Power of Asking Questions "Be curious, ask more questions." For engineers looking to make the shift from coder to problem-solver, John recommends developing the skill of asking good questions. He points to Harvard Business Review's article on "The Surprising Power of Questions" as a valuable resource. The ability to ask insightful questions about business needs, user requirements, and problem definitions allows engineers to uncover the true challenges beneath surface-level requirements. This curiosity-driven approach not only leads to better solutions but also positions engineers as valuable contributors to business strategy. In this segment, we refer to the article in HBR titled The Surprising Power of Questions. About John Crickett John is a passionate software engineer and leader on a mission to empower one million engineers and managers. With extensive expertise in distributed systems, full-stack development, and evolving tech stacks from C++ to Rust, John creates innovative coding challenges, insightful articles, and newsletters to help teams level up their skills. Andrew explores a powerful key to authentic human freedom: the cardinal virtue of prudence. He unpacks what might sound like a dry topic—just about making good decisions—but it's so much more than that. Prudence is a human habit that empowers us to live in harmony with reality as it truly is. Far from abstract theory, Andrew shows how this virtue can be lived out in deeply practical ways—especially in our journey toward becoming chaste, self-giving persons in our sexual identity. Andrew goes deeper into how prudence brings balance to how we remember our past. Rather than staying in denial or getting stuck in despair, he invites us to see our story with clear, faithful eyes. Here's a sobering idea: It is impossible to know and understand 100% of a situation. Now, I know that may sound a bit jarring for some of us. Personally, I like to believe I always have a handle on exactly what's going on. I'm a master mind-reader, and an excellent future-predictor—or at least I'd like to think so! Of course, I'm speaking tongue-in-cheek here. In truth, I don't know the future and no one has complete knowledge of any situation. Once I settle into that reality, something beautiful begins to happen: curiosity emerges. And curiosity leads me to ask better questions, which broadens my perspective and deepens my understanding. The small phrase "I Wonder..." is the core of what we're talking about today. _________________________________________________________________Connect with Gem on Instagram and learn more on the Unhurried Living website and her new book, Hold That Thought: Sorting Through the Voices in Our Heads

Do you think hiding your struggles will make you a better leader? Hiding your struggles might actually hurt more than you think. In this episode of Influence By Design, Samantha sits down with Serena Mastin, owner of Pulse Marketing, to discuss a topic that's rarely explored with such raw honesty — visibility through vulnerability. Serena's story is anything but ordinary, from surviving a traumatic childhood to leading a thriving marketing agency. What happens when issues you thought you had successfully concealed suddenly surface and threaten everything you've built? This isn't just a story of struggle — it's one of incredible resilience. It's a profound reminder that strength isn't always about holding it all together. Rather, it's knowing when to let go and allow yourself to be vulnerable. As Serena powerfully demonstrates, you can't heal when you hide, and it's in that healing that true success and connection are found. This episode is a must-listen for anyone grappling with the pressures of maintaining a facade of strength when everything seems to be falling apart. For full show notes and links, please visit: https://samanthariley.global/podcast/594/ Samantha Riley xxGet your free copy of The Human Design Advantage - https://samanthariley.global/advantage/Join the Coaches, Thought Leaders & Changemakers FB Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/172041823301121I'd love to connect with you - please reach out and say hi: Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/thesamriley/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/samriley/

When we think of rituals, we tend to think of big, inherited, more occasional religious or cultural ceremonies like church services, holidays, weddings, and funerals. But as my guest observes, we also engage in small, self-made, everyday rituals that help us turn life's more mundane moments into more meaningful ones.In the The Ritual Effect: From Habit to Ritual, Harness the Surprising Power of Everyday Actions, psychologist and Harvard Business School professor Michael Norton explores the way our DIY rituals shape, and enhance, our lives. We take up that survey on today's show. Michael explains the difference between a habit and a ritual and how individuals and families create unique "ritual signatures" even within more standard rituals like holidays. We discuss the different areas of life in which rituals show up and what they do for us, including how they help us cope with uncertainty, savor life, and connect to the past. We get into the function DIY rituals perform in romantic relationships, from deepening intimacy to facilitating a break-up, the role that "kinkeepers" play in keeping a family together, the tricky business of combining family traditions when people get married, how to know when a family tradition should be retired, and much more.Resources Related to the PodcastAoM series on the power of ritualAoM Article: How to Turn an Ordinary Routine Into a Spirit-Renewing RitualAoM Podcast #505: A Man's Need for RitualAoM Podcast #835: The Power of Ritual"Deja Vu" by Olivia RodrigoConnect With Michael NortonMichael's website — including the "Habit or Ritual?" quiz
