This week Kate discusses the extreme emphasis that is put on diabetics to have complete control and manage blood sugar effectively. When there is a loss of control for a person with diabetes, the stakes can be high (hospitalization, coma, complications, death) or at least appear that way. Does this lead to becoming a control freak in diabetes and in life? For Kate, it seemed to have that effect and in this episode, she talks about how art helped find a balance between controlling what she could and letting go of what she couldn't. This week we have a solo episode! Kate discusses in depth how diabetes may have played a huge role in her excessive overthinking, need for control, and being a perfectionist. She breaks down some important things she's learned from therapy and other psychologists (@the.holistic.psychologist @the.ferrapist) such as the way overthinking gives us an illusion of control, the way guilt/shame/blame can be a defense against feeling helpless, and ways to calm the nervous system and return to the body. A diabetes diagnosis can be incredibly complex and can affect people in very different ways. Unhealed wounds continue to cause us pain until we become aware of them and work to release and heal. Everyone's journey with this is different and whatever you are feeling/have felt is completely valid. Seek counseling to get a better understanding of your own pain related to diabetes. Please remember that this is not medical advice or therapy. Kate is not a psychologist or therapist, she is simply speaking of her personal experience and how she's come to understand the way diabetes has affected her.
