Celiac Disease is a long-term autoimmune disorder, primarily affecting the small intestine, where individuals develop intolerance to gluten. Gluten is present in foods such as wheat, rye and barley.[1] The impact of this damage is impaired absorption of nutrients from food and drink and can lead to a wide range of collateral symptoms and long-term health complications. Classic symptoms include gastrointestinal problems such as chronic diarrhea, abdominal distention, malabsorption, loss of appetite, and among children failure to grow normally. Non-classic symptoms are more common, especially in people older than two years. There may be mild or absent gastrointestinal symptoms, a wide number of symptoms involving any part of the body or no obvious symptoms. Celiac disease was first described in childhood; however, it may develop at any age. It is associated with other autoimmune diseases, such as Type 1 diabetes mellitus and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, among others. [2] As with Diabetes, the lifelong presence of Celiac is an emotional, mental, and physical stress. If you have Celiac disorder, you may suffer Celiac Distress and Burnout with similar symptoms and manifestation as Diabetes Distress and Diabetes Burnout. Much of the stress comes from the need to continuously monitor what is consumed to avoid Gluten. Bread made with wheat flour clearly contains Gluten. Condiments such as Soy Sauce and Teriyaki Sauce historically are made with wheat and also contain Gluten and will create an allergic reaction. They are referred to as Hidden Gluten. The challenges and stresses are similar to Diabetes Distress and Diabetes Burnout and may have similar effects on caregivers. Journaling is a conversation with myself through what I write in my journal. I write at the start and end of every day. It is a very therapeutic exercise that started at the beginning of July and has become an integral part of my daily routine. Most recently this dialogue has helped me through the emotional ups and downs of the longest episode of Diabetes Burnout I have encountered so far. Diabetes Distress and Diabetes Burnout represent ongoing emotional and mental challenges in the face of a condition that requires continuous monitoring of blood sugars, foodand drink, exercise, and other life stye challenges. Caregivers interact with the Diabetic daily and are impacted by the Diabetic's needs, mood, and emotions. In most cases, the caregiver is a family member or partner who almost invariably has no medical or professional caregiver background. Diabetic Distress is unfortunately a part of the care giver's experience when they are closely involved with a Diabetic. A professional caregiver can detach from a patient after the appointment.Diabetes Distress is the negative emotional experience of living with and managing diabetes. 1Diabetes Distress isn't the same as depression. Diabetes Distress is when a person feels frustrated, defeated or overwhelmed by diabetes. These feelings can come and go.It doesn't mean that you have these feelings about other parts of your life. Diabetes Distress can turn into depression if you have these feelings for a while and they aren't going away. If you think you might be depressed, we have more information and support about depression to help you. You're not alone in this. 2Diabetes Burnout is the feeling of physical and emotional exhaustion due to the demands of living with, and managing diabetes. Diabetes is a condition requiring a person to engage in strict self-management, and an extensive medicinal regime. Please remember, Diabetes Distress and Diabetes Burnout manifest differently for everyone. Once you are diagnosed as a diabetic your life changes and you need to understandyour condition and how you are reacting to it.Photography: Mark A. The CDC estimates there are 40-Million Americans diagnosed with diabetes, but another 100-Million that may have pre-diabetes. These are staggering numbers, especially considering the cost of treating it. Betsy Richter-Gifford, RN, Diabetes Care and Education Specialist at Texas Health Resources joins us to talk about this, and encourage patients and their families dealing with it. In the second half of our show, we salute Texas Health Resources, recently awarded the coveted Foster G. McGaw Prize, recognizing hospitals that have distinguished themselves through efforts to improve the health and well-being of everyone in their communities. David Tesmer, Chief Community and Public Policy Officer for Texas Health Resources joins us to discuss some of the programs and metrics that led to this recognition. Then we wrap up with one of the most valued non-medical contributions in our hospitals, especially these last 2 1/2 years. Reverend Elizabeth Watson-Martin, MDiv, Vice President, Faith & Spirituality Integration at Texas Health Resources stops by to talk about the chaplaincy programs and how so many North Texas families have benefitted from these unsung heroes who may welcome a newborn into one family, and an hour later help another family say farewell to a loved one. Diabetes.

This is Episode 1 of a 6-part series talking about how to overcome the biggest mental health challenges of living with T1D. In this episode, we talk about diabetes burnout with David Mina. David is the digital creator behind TYPE1LIVABETIC on Instagram and has been living with T1D for over 11 years. Diabetes burnout is a state in which someone with T1D grows tired of managing their condition, and then simply ignores it for some time, or worse, forever. Although we don't like to admit it, diabetes burnout is a normal part of living with T1D. Managing T1D is a 24/7 job, with no breaks, so experiencing burnout is to be expected sometimes. David gives us some great strategies you can use to take care of yourself when burnout hits. You may not be able to avoid diabetes burnout, but you can find ways to minimize the impact of burnout on your life. You can find David on Instagram @type1livabetic. Dawn Phenomenon is described as the body's way of secreting glucose into the bloodstream from hormones like cortisol in the process of sleeping and or wakefulness. Why does this happen? Well, it is the body's way of supplying energy to us when we wake up, but as people living with diabetes, we do not make the insulin that converts that extra glucose into energy!Splitting Basal Insulins by Doctor Bernstein:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lrbx...My name is Ali ABDUL-Kareem, I am 21 years old, I do daily vlogs on my journey towards achieving great health with diabetes. In 2011 Erin Spineto completed a five-day solo sail around the Florida Keys. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 19, she's since completed other adventures such as a relay swim around the Keys and a stand-up paddle along North Carolina's intra-coastal waterway. Her new book, Adventure On, offers advice to keep people with diabetes motivated to pursue their dreams and manage T1D day by day. Spineto is married with two children; she and Stacey talk about juggling family and work (and T1D) responsibilities, getting away from it all and whether Spineto's job as a middle school teacher is tougher than a solo sail! Stacey also shares her family's recent adventures in the Galapagos Islands and how they managed her son's type 1 diabetes while snorkeling, hiking, eating new foods and spending a week at sea.

Dealing with Diabetes Burnout: How to Recharge and Get Back on Track When You Feel Frustrated and Overwhelmed Living with Diabetes (Ginger Vieira) is an inspiring and empowering guide to managing the daily work and pressure of diabetes management - counting carbohydrates at every meal, constantly adjusting medication doses, taking daily injections, pricking fingers multiple times a day, and struggling with the unavoidable challenges of fancy, yet imperfect, technology - that can lead to burnout. Vieira provides the tools and encouragement needed to help readers get back on track and make diabetes management a rewarding priority. Chapters directly address burnout in relation to: food, exercise, insulin dosing, blood sugar checking, fear of low blood sugar, being a caregiver/spouse of a person with diabetes, communicating more effectively with your doctor, taking a healthy "vacation" from diabetes, and creating realistic expectations and goals.
