Sleep was never a problem for Rupsa but after experiencing some professional challenges and moving to a new city, it became a struggle. Although Rupsa found a new job and everything was going well in her life, her struggle with sleep continued. She started to fear each night. Her heart would race. It felt like her mind was working against her. Things started to change when Rupsa realized her mind was actually trying to help her. When she stopped struggling with her thoughts and feelings, when she stopped trying to control sleep, when she practiced accepting what was out of her control, things started to improve. Rupsa now sleeps well and whenever a night of less sleep shows up from time to time, it no longer has any power or influence over her life. Watch/listen to this episode

Arcana Coelestia 7408. [2] That forms or substances are recipient of life can be seen from every single thing that appears in living creatures; and also that recipient forms or substances are arranged in the way most suitable for the influx of life. Without the reception of life in substances, which are forms, there would be no living thing in the natural world, nor in the spiritual world. Series of the purest filaments, like bundles, constitute these forms. It is the same with those things therein which are highly modified; for modifications receive their form from the forms which are the substances in which they are, and from which they flow, because the substances or forms are the determining subjects. The reason why the learned have regarded the things belonging to man's life, that is, to his thought and will, as being devoid of recipient substances or forms, has been that they believed life or the soul to be something either flamy or ethereal, thus such as after death would be dissipated; hence comes the insane notion of many, that there is no life after death. From all this it is evident how it is to be understood that the reasoning falsities were arranged in groups in the natural. Divine Love and Wisdom 41. But because this is contrary to appearance, it may seem not to merit belief unless it be proved; and since it can be proved only by such things as man can perceive from his bodily senses, it will be proved by these. Man has five external senses which are called touch, taste, smell, hearing and sight. The subject of touch is the skin by which man is enveloped. The very substance and form of the skin cause it to feel the things applied to it. The sense of touch is not in the things applied, but in the substance and form of the skin which are the subject. That sense is only an affecting of it by the things applied. It is the same with taste. This sense is only an affecting of the substance and form which belong to the tongue; the tongue is the subject. It is the same with smell. It is well known that odour affects the nostrils, and that it is in the nostrils, and smell is an affecting of them by the odoriferous things touching them. It is the same with hearing. It appears as if the hearing were in the place where the sound originates, but the hearing is in the ear, and is an affecting of its substance and form. That the hearing is at a distance from the ear is an appearance. It is the same with sight. When a man sees objects at a distance, the seeing appears to be there, but yet the seeing is in the eye which is the subject and is likewise an affecting of it. Distance is solely from the judgment inferring about space from intermediate things or from the diminution and the consequent indistinctness of the object, an image of which is produced interiorly in the eye according to the angle of incidence. From this it is evident that sight does not go out from the eye to the object, but that the image of the object enters the eye and affects its substance and form. Thus it is just the same with sight as it is with hearing. Hearing does not go out from the ear to catch the sound, but the sound enters the ear and affects it. From these considerations it can be established that the affecting of substance and form which causes the sense is not a something separate from the subject, but only causes a change in it, the subject remaining the subject as before and afterwards. Hence it follows that sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch are not a something volatile flowing out of their organs, but that they are the organs themselves, considered in their substance and form, and that when the organs are affected, sensation results. DLW 363. (i) Love and wisdom, and the will and the understanding therefrom, make the very life of man. Hardly anyone knows what life is. When one thinks about it, it seems as if it were a volatile something, of which no idea is possible. It seems so,

Between Taylor and myself, we have a wide range of both life experiences and preferences when it comes to all things “New Year, New Me.” While I'm tackling this year in the most stereotypical of New Year fashions—all the goals!—Taylor is understandably (and wisely?) more reticent to jump on the bandwagon. We explore our past histories with goal-making around this time of the year, have a hilarious realization about what appears to be a gendered understanding of the whole “word of the year,” and Taylor shares her fascinating tales of using Artificial Intelligence to help her come up with some potential resolutions (+ a word of the year) for 2025. Dulce found that the more she tried to control sleep, the more she struggled with sleep. And, the more she tried to resist the difficult thoughts and feelings that often come with insomnia, the more difficult and powerful those things became. This awareness prompted a change of approach. Dulce let go of her strategy of trying to make sleep happen through effort (even though it was an approach she had been trying to make work for over 15 years). Her new approach involved letting go. She stopped trying to control sleep. She moved away from the sleep efforts, rules, and rituals. She stopped trying to control her thoughts and feelings. She used the energy that was once consumed by an ongoing struggle to commit to actions that helped her live the life she wanted to live. This approach wasn't easy and it took ongoing practice. However, it was an approach that allowed Dulce to take her life back from insomnia. Watch/listen to this episode

And Moses answered, and said, And behold they will not believe me, and will not hear my voice; for they will say, Jehovah hath not been seen of thee. And Jehovah said unto him, What is that in thy hand? And he said, A rod. And He said, Cast it to the earth. And he cast it to the earth, and it became a serpent, and Moses fled from before it. And Jehovah said unto Moses, Put forth thy hand, and take hold of its tail; and he put forth his hand, and took hold of it, and it became a rod in his hand. (Exodus 4:1-4) Arcana Coelestia 6953. And he put forth his hand, and took hold of it. That this signifies an uplifting toward the interiors, is evident from the signification of “putting forth the hand and taking hold,” when said of what lies beneath, as being to be uplifted toward higher things, or what is the same, toward the interiors (see above, n. 6952); from the signification of “hand,” as being interior power (see also n. 6952); and from the signification of a “serpent,” which is what he took hold of, as being the sensuous and reasoning thence (of which above, n. 6949); that when the sensuous is uplifted toward the interiors, power is communicated from the Divine, AC 6954... From himself man looks downward only, that is, into the world, and to the earth, because from himself he is in evil and falsity; and when he looks thither, then the sensuous has dominion, and interior things makes no opposition, because they follow the force of the stream, and yield to it. Nevertheless not from himself but from the Lord, man looks upward, that is, to heaven and to the Lord, which is effected by means of an uplifting and when the interiors are uplifted, the sensuous also is uplifted, but its light is then obscured, because the light of heaven has dominion. When this takes place, good and truth from the Lord flow in, and are also received; and this is meant by power communicated from the Divine. Yet no others can be uplifted in this way than those who have lived in the good of faith and of charity. That the upliftings are toward the interiors, has been given me to know from living experience, for they have been observed a thousand times. AC 6948(5) ....when man is in the sensuous and in its light, he is in thick darkness in respect to the things of the spiritual world, that is, in respect to those which are in light from the Divine; and that the sensuous light is turned into mere thick darkness when the light from heaven falls into it. The reason is, that the truths which are of the Divine light cannot be together with fallacies and the falsities thence derived; but [the falsities] extinguish [the truths] and thereby induce thick darkness. What do you do when you can't find the words? Sometimes you just don't know what to say or write. It's never just the words you use. Even the written word can convey a degree of tone, intent, and attitude. Communication is a complex mechanism of expression employed to convey ideas. It's how you and I can share notions, agree and disagree, and expand (or, frankly, shrink) our overall knowledge base. Communication can be both internal and external. Communication within and without Whole people are made up of 4 specific elements. One is tangible, the physical. The other three are intangible, the mental, emotional, and spiritual. Everyone has these four elements to themselves, yet how developed each is varies wildly. The intangible elements have a rather intense impact on how communication works. This is why it's more than words. Words are physical. That means there is still a mental, emotional, and spiritual element to all communications. Most of these are incredibly subtle. That's because of the intangible nature of the mental, emotional, and spiritual. This is also where miscommunication is frequently born. Words and body language go hand-in-hand when it comes to in-person conversations. Looks, how you stand, sighs, what you do with your hands, coupled with the words you speak convey an almost surreal amount of information. Communication is never just words You can be with a person, in the same space, and still misspeak, misinterpret information, and misunderstand. You think you're expressing yourself, you think you're reading another's cues, and then learn you utterly failed to communicate with one another properly, and now there's hurt. Even the unintentional hurt caused by miscommunication feels bad both given and received. What do you do when you can't find the words? For me, the answer is to keep searching. Maybe they're not here now, but they always come when called. Become more consciously aware and mindful of your own nonverbal, wordless communication styles. I've had a real eye-opener into how what I do and don't do, without words, can create an incredible degree of misunderstanding, which in turn leads to hurt feelings. That sucks. I can choose to learn a lesson from it, and by recognizing, acknowledging, and being accountable for my failed communication beyond words, I can grow and learn. You can do this, too. This week's Applied Guidance for Mindfulness Tool: Before you say anything to anyone, or send a DM or email, no matter what the topic is, pause. Consider your words, what they are, and what they will convey. Think about nonverbal elements that might go into it. Then act from there. It might not seem like much, but sometimes pausing and considering before acting can avoid confusion, miscommunication, misunderstanding, and other issues before they might even occur. Be mindful of what words and nonverbal communication you put out into the world. Meditation has long been recognized as a powerful tool for enhancing mental and emotional well-being. The practice has gained mainstream acceptance, partly due to a growing body of scientific research that underscores its benefits. Among these, the ability of meditation to help us manage and remove negative thoughts and feelings. Meditation aids in the cultivation of a more positive and resilient mindset, enhancing our overall quality of life. Negative thoughts and feelings, such as anxiety, stress and depression, can significantly impact our quality of life. They can distort our perception of reality, interfere with our ability to focus, and impair our decision-making abilities. Over time, chronic negativity can lead to more severe mental health issues and adversely affect physical health. Meditation offers a proactive approach to managing these challenges, helping to break the cycle of negative thought patterns and emotional responses. Meditation involves practices that encourage heightened awareness and focused attention. Although there are various forms of meditation, most share common elements, such as deep breathing, mindfulness, and the cultivation of a non-judgmental attitude towards our own thoughts and feelings. By engaging in these practices, we can learn to observe our thoughts and emotions without becoming entangled in them, gaining greater clarity and perspective. Meditation builds an enhanced state of self-awareness, allowing us to recognize negative thought patterns as they arise. This awareness is the first step toward interrupting and ultimately changing these patterns. Numerous studies have shown that meditation can significantly reduce stress. By promoting relaxation and decreasing the body's production of stress hormones, meditation can help mitigate the physiological effects of negative emotions. Regular meditation practice has been linked to improved emotional regulation. This means that people who meditate regularly are better equipped to manage their emotional responses to challenging situations, reducing the likelihood of being overwhelmed by negative feelings. Meditation enhances the brain's ability to concentrate and maintain attention. This improved focus can help us redirect our mind away from negative thoughts, offering a sense of mental clarity and calm. Over time, meditation can contribute to a more positive outlook on life. By reducing the prevalence of negative thoughts and feelings, we may experience an increase in positive emotions, leading to greater overall well-being. Incorporating meditation into our daily routine does not require extensive time commitments or special equipment. Even just a few minutes of meditation each day can yield significant benefits. Short guided meditations like the many we provide here can help both immediately and over time. Meditation is a powerful and accessible tool for combating negative thoughts and feelings. Through increased self-awareness, stress reduction, enhanced emotional regulation, improved concentration, and a boost in positivity, meditation can significantly enhance mental and emotional well-being as we learn to navigate and transform our internal landscape.

Today host Heather Creekmore is joined by author Ed Welch for a thought-provoking conversation about biblical counseling, body image issues, and the challenges of Christian teachings in the face of human emotions. The discussion touches on the impact of Welch's book "When People Are Big and God Is Small" on Creekmore's own work in biblical counseling, the importance of finding words to express struggles in biblical counseling and the tension between seeking God's comfort in anxiety and the reality of human emotions. They explore the significance of supportive friendships, prayer, and seeking help from trusted individuals amidst personal struggles. Welch also introduces a new counseling Bible and discusses the diverse applications of scripture in addressing modern struggles. Here are some key quote takeaways from today's show: "Sometimes we don't speak about the difficult things we experience because we don't think we should have those. Christian the Christian emotional life should be just a little bit better than the majority of people because we have Jesus, So we should be a little bit happier than everybody else, and that'd be anything less than that is to somehow dishonor god and say he's less Powerful." - Ed Welch How the Psalms can teach us about our emotions: Ed says they teach us to ask, "What is important on your soul right now? How you feel is the same thing. What is especially important to you right now? What are your joys? What are your delights? What are your hopes? What are your ambitions? What are your fears?" Ep #241 - Picture yourself as your spirit animal, deep in a dense, shadowy forest, embodying the emotional turmoil many face in addiction. This journey delves into the thickets of past mistakes and the fear-laden shadows of an uncertain future. But it also offers a guiding light – forgiveness. Let's explore how your spirit discovers the power of forgiveness, using it as a lantern to illuminate the path out of the emotional darkness. You'll witness your spirit's struggles with overthinking and pacing in circles, and I'll illustrate actionable steps to break free from this cycle. In this parable, your spirit animal faces mythical creatures and judgmental figures, symbolizing figments of your imagination, false visions, and external judgment. I'll discuss the importance of building self-esteem from within and focusing on personal growth. As your spirit journeys through the forest, overcoming challenges, you'll reveal your valley of self-discovery. This is a place of transformation where you will find your true self. Finally, as your spirit ascends the mountain, representing personal achievements and aspirations, you'll feel the conquering of your emotional forest. From that place, you'll see yourself for who you have always been - a human worthy of empathy, acceptance, and love. Hit play and dive in with an open mind and heart. You're exactly where you need to be right now. It's time to shine. Step into the SUN. Our thoughts, emotions, and experiences can reshape the very structure of our brains, allowing it to adapt and change over time. This is known as neuroplasticity, and while it's present throughout our lives the younger we are the more powerful it is. On today's episode, Dr. Caroline Leaf joins Rick and Forrest to explore how we can harness the power of neuroplasticity to clean up our mental mess…and teach our children to do the same. They detail Dr. Leaf's five-step Neurocycle process, walk through a practical example, and explain how we can use mind-management tools to reshape our relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings. Dr. Leaf then shares how we can introduce these tools to young people, the importance of nurturing a child's sense of agency, and the power of teaching through modeling. About our Guest: Dr. Caroline Leaf is a clinical and cognitive neuroscientist who has been researching the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory for over 40 years.
