Travel First Episode 98Taronga Zoo – Sydney, AustraliaThe first public zoo in New South Wales (NSW) officially opened in Sydney in 1884 on a site known as Billy Goat Swamp in Moore Park, operated by the Zoological Society of NSW which was founded in March 1879.After a visit to Germany in 1908 the elected Secretary of the zoo, Albert Sherbourne Le Souef, returned with a vision for a new Sydney zoo, based on the bar-less exhibits of Hamburg Zoo. The site at Moore Park had become too small and was not suited to the vision. A new site for the zoo was sought. On April 24th, 1912 the NSW Government granted 43 acres of land north of the harbour which were part of Ashton Park. Another 9 acres were granted in April 1916.In 1913, Management of the zoo passed to a Trust named the New Zoological Gardens Trust which became the Taronga Zoological Park Trust. For more visit https://taronga.org.au/about/history-and-culture/sydney or https://taronga.org.au Subscribe, rate and review Travel First at any good podcatcher app, including ApplePodcasts (formerly iTunes) (featured in New & Noteworthy), Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Pocketcasts, Podbean, CastBox.fm and more.Email: travelfirst@bitesz.comFor more, follow Travel First on Facebook, twitter, and Instagram:Facebook: @travelfirstpodcasttwitter: @biteszHQtravelInstagram: www.instagram.com/biteszhqtravelIf you're enjoying Travel First, please share and tell your family and friends. Alex’s 4th Day in Norway sees him in Flam for a second day….taking in spectacular views and the fjords...oh the fjords. Plus there’s pretty spectacular food involved as well. ..and shoes. The Flåm Railway offers valley and waterfall views as it climbs to a station on the Hardangervidda plateau. Norway is a Scandinavian country encompassing mountains, glaciers and deep coastal fjords. Oslo, the capital, is a city of green spaces and museums. Preserved 9th-century Viking ships are displayed at Oslo’s Viking Ship Museum. Bergen, with colorful wooden houses, is the starting point for cruises to the dramatic Sognefjord. Norway is also known for fishing, hiking and skiing, notably at Lillehammer’s Olympic resort.
