At next week's Committee of the Whole meeting, Guelph City Council will look at the fate of the Drill Hall; staff wants to put it up for sale, but there's at least one group in Guelph that wants to do something with it now. It's an idea called the Guelph Centre for Visual Art, and it could feature exhibition space, artist studios, educational and meeting space, and so much more. But does city hall share their vision? This is a tale of two long-term projects. The first is a story about creating a centralized arts building in Guelph. Nearly 20 years ago, a group called the Guelph Arts Platform tried to create to create a collaborative art space with cheap studios, exhibition areas, and networking opportunities, but for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was the Great Recession, the project fell apart. That brings us to the second part of the story, which is the Drill Hall. Constructed in 1866 so that members of the local militia could run drills (hence the name), the hall outlived its purpose by 1911 when the Armoury opened across the street. Over 100 years later, we still don't know what to do with the Drill Hall, which is why City staff will be recommending that council authorize them to put it up for sale, but there is one group that wants to put the Drill Hall to some practical use as an arts centre. Can it be done? Former city councillor Mike Salisbury and Lise Anne Janis think so, and they're leading the effort to establish the Guelph Centre for Visual Art. They join us this week to talk about the plan, why this time will be different, and why the centre should be considered key in discussions around downtown revitalization. They will also discuss government support for the arts, the stakes at Committee of the Whole next week, and why an arts centre matters in the middle of these tough economic times. So let's drill to the bottom on this Drill Hall debate on this week's Guelph Politicast! You can learn more about the Guelph Centre for Visual Art at their website, and you can also follow them on Instagram. The Drill Hall will be discussed at the Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday June 3 and you can see the report now as part of the agenda, which you can find on the council page of the City's website. You have until Friday 10 am to sign up to delegate or to send a correspondence. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. The county Volunteers were known to be excellent shots, winning competitions at Wimbledon and later Bisley. In this episode we take a deep dive into the history of the soldier's main implement, the rifle – from the 1853 pattern musket, through the Snider Enfield rifle that would have been familiar to the first Herefordshire Rifle Volunteers. Assistant Curator Danny Rees, Curator Colonel Andy Taylor and Trustee, Rev Paul Roberts go on to explore the Martini Henry, Lee Metfield and Lee Enfield rifles used in the Boer War and First World War. A number of different rifles were issued to Hereford Territorials owing to weapons shortages at the outbreak of war. Andy shares with us the unusual way the Museum obtained its 1915 Mark III Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE).Danny tells us all sorts of things about the Bren gun that we didn't know along with other Second World War weaponry, including strange items used by the Home Guard and Home Guard Auxiliaries. We come into living memory with the arrival of the Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) used during the Cold War; an example of which the museum hopes to secure for its modern display. Welcome to episode 34 of A Week in Watches, where we've got managing editor Blake Buettner jumping back in to discuss a handful of new releases, and one important survey. We're kicking things off with the biggest news of the week that's focused on something very small from Omega, and that is their new Spirate Balance, which we introduce on the site right here, and react to in real time right here. We still not sure how it's pronounced but the technology is impressive! The watch its packed in also makes quite the statement, and we'd love to hear your thoughts on this one. That Omega wasn't the only big news this week, though. Brew dropped a stunning gold Metric on us that works way better than it has any business doing. Is this the watch that gets us into gold? Likely. Next up are a couple releases from the UK, with the 36mm Three Hander collection of watches from Farer, and new C65 Dune watches from Christopher Ward. Lots of unique personality to find in these watches, from big colorful dials, to svelte shapely cases. Finally, we've got a watch and wrist size survey from Mark Cho of NYC's The Armoury. Let your voice be heard by taking the survey found right here. This week's episode was brought to you by the Windup Watch Shop. So much of the discussion in the watch space is around the acquisition of new watches. Yet the other untold side of the story is that for every watch bought, another is sold. Mark Cho (The Armoury) is balancing the scales. He's selling off the bulk of his collection to fund the expansion of his business, The Armoury, and he's doing it through Phillips. Rather than anonymously consign his watches, Mark has made a custom site – called The Beauty in Everything – showcasing the watches and some of the stories behind them. Even if you're not in the market for a new watch, it's well worth having a look at Mark's significant and very tasteful collection. None of Mark Cho's watches came on Artem straps. We could think of no better way to wrap up this season of HandCut Radio than by revisiting an old guest, Mark Cho, co-founder of The Armoury and co-owner of Drake's. We've called this episode “Mark Cho's take on 2022” because a lot of the themes we explore – the ‘casualisation' of style, the different ways men are reinventing suiting, the danger of hype and the saturation of everyone's attention – feel very relevant to the moment we find ourselves in. We hope you'll agree that this is a fitting end to our sixth season. As always, thank you very much indeed for your support and for tuning in. Maintaining relevance in the entertainment industry is not easy, but this year as Hulisani Ravele celebrates 25 years of her career in the limelight, she speaks about her recipe for success. “It boils down to one thing and that's authenticity. When you are truly yourself from beginning to end it's very hard to get caught up in things that are not for you, things that don't have your name on them, and really having that deeper knowledge of self. It takes a lot of self-work to keep standing in this game. “For me, it's taken therapy, it's taken really being grounded in my spirituality so that I am grounded in myself and I know what it is that I am going for,” she tells TshisaLIVE. His older friends know him as DQ, but Dan Quigley has deeply evolved from his tagging days of two-letter graffiti. I met him 3 years ago where he was working at the Duane street location of The Armoury, however, you will now find him managing the newest location uptown on Madison Avenue. We talk about Dan's youth in what was a crime-ridden Brooklyn, creating art while his father was trying to stop it - though not Dan's - he was actually proud of Dan's. We get into some music chat by way of his experience playing bass and the bands he'll always love. And of course we talk about what brought us together as friends, which is our mutual appreciation for the retail industry. We dip a toe into Dan's relationship with depression and how he's manifested a grateful life full of optimism, love and compassion (my words not his because this is how I see & know Dan) and also the wonderful second coming of his art career…because it's far outstretched the characterization of “Hobby.” I absolutely love what he's doing. In fact I recently purchased my first pieces from him and I can't wait to receive it. This one was an absolute pleasure. The local film industry is shaken up after the fatal shooting involving Alec Baldwin. Industry guilds say New Zealand safety standards are strong but fatigue, low budgets, and long hours can still present risks to cast and crew members. Thursday's shooting of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins highlighted multiple suspected errors, and the intricate work of professionals such as armourers on movie sets. "Everybody is gobsmacked this could even have possibly happened," actor and Equity New Zealand president Jennifer Ward-Lealand said. "It's a tragedy. It's an absolute tragedy. I don't know how the film can go on. To have lost your director of photography, I just don't know how you could get over it." Ward-Lealand and her husband Michael Hurst have both worked with firearms and armourers on local productions. Ward-Lealand said armourers in her experience always carefully instructed actors and followed multiple safety procedures and checks. "That's probably why I know never to put my finger on the trigger." Hurst said he couldn't understand how the shooting of Hutchins happened. "The gun never leaves the sight of the armourer." Stage and screen actor Michael Hurst says knowing the strict guidelines around using weapons, it's hard to comprehend how the Santa Fe fatal shooting could have happened. Photo / Doug Sherring. Hurst said in his experience, actors waited for verbal and visual reassurances from armourers. "It's too problematic if anything goes wrong. All the armourers have to be qualified." Hurst said when firearms were used in theatre, police were told, and multiple safety plans were supposed to be closely followed. New Zealand stunt professional Stuart Thorp said armourers frequently were ex-military professionals and the use of guns on local sets involved detailed planning. "Armoury itself is a specialist position and they know all about the different types of ammunition. Effectively the first assistant director is in control of the set." Rust director Joel Souza reportedly told investigators three people were handling firearms, which the armourer and first assistant director checked before giving to actors. A violinist plays behind a photograph of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during a vigil in her honour in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Photo / Andres Leighton, AP Thorp said it seemed some crew were out firing live rounds for target practice near the New Mexico set. "It's an assistant director that picked the hot weapon off of the cart and gave it to Mr Baldwin." But Baldwin believed it was a cold or unloaded weapon. "The live weapon should never be anywhere near the prop ammunition." Thorp, a Stunt Guild of New Zealand member, said the use of weapons on productions involved safety briefings and often co-operation between different departments. "Say if you have a sci-fi show, a company like Weta or the art department might add moulding to weapons," Thorp said. "Generally the rubber guns are under the art department." Different stunts could require different weapons and techniques. Thorp said sometimes a computer-generated muzzle flash was used on scenes. "Even if it's a rubber weapon, treat every weapon as if it's loaded." Thorp said after more ad-hoc approaches a few decades ago, New Zealand laws now made producers and department heads responsible for ensuring safety was taken seriously. "Definitely in New Zealand, the standards around this sort of thing in my experience are super-rigorous." Alec Baldwin in Santa Fe with Halyna Hutchins' husband Matt and Matt's son after the shooting incident. Photo / Backgrid Other hazards could include rigging, but Thorp said the film industry adopted the best practices from arborists, scaffolders or other industries where rigging was used. He said the fact crew raised safety concerns on Rust before the shooting made the tragedy even more alarming. "Usually it's not just one thing that's gone wrong. There are multiple layers of mistakes that...
