Parenting coach May Flam joins the show to discuss the realities of burnout, division of labor at home, and how couples can stop keeping score. May shares her personal experience growing up in a home daycare, how that shaped her approach to parenting, and why she and her husband strategically divide household responsibilities—including his unexpected role as the family event planner. She explains the invisible workload many women carry, why "letting things go" isn't the solution, and how the Fair Play system can help create a more balanced household. The conversation dives into common parenting struggles, from dealing with the never-ending dinner dilemma to handling a partner who just doesn't see the mess. Plus, May introduces the ultimate relationship hack: giving your spouse the light when they've gone on one tangent too many. ✨ Subscribe, rate, and review! What are the problems facing academic journals today? What changes to the system could be made to address them? How could being more open about studies that aren't successful actually be a success strategy overall?Faye Flam is a science and medical journalist, a columnist for Bloomberg, host of the podcast Follow the Science, and the author of The Score: The Science of the Male Sex Drive.Greg and Faye discuss the importance and challenges of science journalism. Their conversation touches on the role of science journalists in translating and evaluating scientific data, the replication crisis, the influence of fraudulent research, the dynamics of public trust in science, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on public health communication. They also examine the issue with the growing proliferation of deepfakes, ‘fake news,' and the importance of maintaining journalistic integrity in an increasingly digital age.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Show Links:Recommended Resources:Replication CrisisScience JournalAmerican Institute of PhysicsAmerican Chemical SocietyGary TaubesRobert F. So even something as fraught as whether sex is binary, I think at least in the past, that's something you could tackle as a journalist without taking sides, but just adding clarity and adding context and saying, you know, these people disagree because they have different values and they want to use different language. They're interpreting things differently. But there are certain aspects of biology that everybody agrees on.Rethinking failure in science10:08: People have to rethink the meaning of failure. If you have a hypothesis that's kind of a long shot, and you test it, and you do a really good experiment, and you find out the hypothesis didn't hold up, well, you've tested that. Maybe that's something you can rule out. That should be an acceptable, perfectly normal part of science. It's not a failure per se. It's just that sometimes you have to rule something out that's a long shot.On the confidence trap of AI49:01: One of the hazards of AI is that people—it's so confident—it answers questions with so much confidence, and it sounds so smart that people just assume it's right. And it's often not right. People call them hallucinations, but it can just be, with some subtle thing in your prompt, right? I think there is going to be a period where people are seduced into believing AI because it can be so incredibly smart, and it makes these statements with so much confidence. But a lot of it—there is this kind of chaos to it. Little changes in the prompt will completely change the answer.
In this raunchy and daring BONUS episode of Film Flam, the men (boys) break down from the stress of constantly generating new, groundbreaking insights on films. Oh, and they drink. How much they drank exactly is up to debate, and probably lost to the cruel churning tides of history, but one thing is certain: you should drink too.A lot.And only then will you be able to appreciate the masterpiece of a bonus episode that is blessing your shitty feed.Come in, listen to some “fake” movie synopses, and get away from those pesky life responsibilities. What we have for you here is more important. With love,realfilmflampod@gmail.com

This week, we Flam Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull. This upsetting movie is loved by so many critics. Roger Ebert liked it, the Academy Awards folks threw two trophies at it, and Spielberg described it as “a masterpiece.” But is it even worth watching? Listen to the real heroes to find out. Outstanding questions (locally sourced): * Is this episode about Taxi Driver or about Raging Bull? * Why can't Lamotta's wife stop cheating? * “‘The black and white of Raging Bull isn't just black and white - it's silver and midnight and smoke and sweat.' - David Thomson. Check out our episode with iconoclastic guitar legend Dave Fiuczynski. He wields a double neck fretless guitar, and plays a bunch of cool microtonal riffage for us! We talked about two tracks from “Flam! Bam! Pan-Asian Microjam!” and two from “Mikrojazz.” In “Flam,” there are a variety of compositional methods used, and the vocabulary is almost entirely derived from motivic bird calls. The uirapuru call in particular has an extremely distinctive contour. Many of these works express a desire for exploring continuums and representing sophisticated Eastern articulations. We also discuss microtonal diminished scales, the joy of smashing genres together, blue notes and sliding, pitch inflection as a player signature, quarter tones as a teaching concept, and much more! The music from Flam! could be described as being from a 72edo framework. FilmFlam Is Back. and this time we're scared. This week we take another (skinny) dip into the murky waters of Kubrick's mind. Listen to our two intrepid and foolish hosts put all rumors about Room 237 to rest in the most expansive and astute Shining analysis ever done. Make sure to listen for such atrociously bad takes like: Colin granting Quentin Tarantino an N-word Pass, pining for Wendy Torrence to step on him, and (quite audaciously) what would he would fix about one of the greatest films in it's genre. Outstanding questions: * Why can't the contractor remodel my bathroom to look like that? * Why doesn't Jack ever get to play? * Are they hiring at the Overlook Hotel? Welcome back, dear listeners. It was so fun to record this chat with someone who's both a good friend and a colleague. May Flam is a leadership coach with nearly 10 years of experience helping busy professionals who are parents to curb their resentment and burnout at work and at home. She is based in Hoboken, New Jersey. During our conversation, we talked about May's chronic pain recovery story and how that journey relates to the work she does as a coach, specifically in helping people learn the principals of a method called Fair Play, which shows parents and couples how to co-create a more equitable distribution of household work, so that they can free up space in their brain to let go, un-scrunch their shoulders and cut their nervous systems some much needed slack. I have personally benefited from May's wisdom in this area, and we talked about that too! So if you wanna pick up some truly useful tips and get a peek into both of our personal home lives, take a load off and join us! This episode was originally released September 27, 2023.Laura Flam is one of the authors of the book "But Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?"The book serves as an oral history of the girl groups that made up the 1960's music scene. The girl group sound, made famous by acts like The Ronettes, The Shirelles, The Supremes, and The Vandellas, took over the airwaves by capturing the mixture of innocence and rebellion emblematic of America in the Sixties. While many girl group songs rose to the top of the charts and shaped the trajectory of pop music in the process, many of the artists remain all but anonymous to most listeners. In this episode of the podcast, Frank discusses the young women behind some of the country's most popular songs. Flam reveals the challenges many of the artists faced while navigating the music industry at such a young age, and at a time when America was just beginning to reconcile a history fraught with racism. Flam also shares what became of many of the members of girl groups after music tastes changed. Flammiferous is an adjective that means bright with a flame. The Latin word flamma (FLAM uh) means ‘flame.' A flammiferous object is one that contains flames. Here's an example: Whatever the source of that flammigerous object in the distance, we could tell it was seriously on fire. When something that big is ablaze, it's hard to miss.
