Where Craft Meets Design: Exploring Material Understanding with Raimana Jones

Send us a textThe conversation with Raimana Jones from Atelier Jones Design delves deep into the heart of what makes good design truly exceptional—craftsmanship. Drawing inspiration from architectural legends like Alvar Aalto and Walter Gropius, we explore how the most revered designers extended their vision beyond buildings to encompass furniture, lighting, and complete environments.Raimana shares his journey through fabrication and making, revealing the powerful feedback loop between crafting with your hands and designing with your mind. We unpack how this tactile understanding shapes thoughtful design decisions that simply can't emerge from digital processes alone. The discussion turns to a concerning trend—the gradual disappearance of workshop culture from design education, as hands-on making gives way to digital tools and 3D printing. What truly elevates this conversation is our exploration of material understanding as the essence of craftsmanship. Just as Tadao Ando mastered concrete through deep connection with the material, Romana's elegant steel kitchens showcase how intimate knowledge transforms ordinary materials into extraordinary designs. While budget realities often dictate the level of craft possible in projects, we discover inventive approaches to maintaining craftsmanship even with constraints.Whether you're a practicing designer, architecture enthusiast, or someone who appreciates the beauty of well-crafted spaces, this episode offers a compelling reminder of why material engagement matters. As James Dyson wisely noted, "The visceral experience of making things by hand is a wise teacher." Join us for an inspiring discussion about rediscovering play, embracing failure, and cultivating a deeper connection with the materials that shape our world.Key Episode Links:- https://www.atelierjonesdesign.co.nz/pages/about-usChapters:0:00 - Introduction to Craft in Design5:00 - Exploring Cross-Media Design Processes11:15 - Workshop Culture and Material Play20:25 - The Design Process: Sketching to Making27:00 - Understanding Materials Deeply33:48 - Budget Constraints and Craft Quality41:47 - Craftsmanship in Architecture48:30Please Like and Subscribe it really helps :) Follow us on @designpriciplespod on Instagram and if you wish to contact us hit our DMs or our personal pages. Oliko Artek maamme ensimmäinen life style-brändi? Miten Artek vertautuu saksalaiseen Bauhausiin? Ohjelman vieraina ovat Antti Tevajärvi, Artek 2nd Cyclestä, Alvar Aalto Museon johtaja Jukka Savolainen, näyttelyintendentti Mari Murtoniemi ja Laura Larres Artekista. He's best known as a leading innovator of Nordic design for, among other things, his award-winning Block Lamp, the familiar light build inside a rectangular brick of glass, which is exhibited in New York's Museum of Modern Art. He has designed furniture, packaging, pots & pans, turntables, hotel rooms internationally & many other immersive spaces, but most importantly for us here at iMMERSE!, the Genelec 8000-series of speakers for cutting-edge sound systems. Soon being released, Genelec headphones.  I met Harri in New York City in the first years of this century.  He had designed  a traveling show of Finnish design and engineered the installations. Typical of Nordic society, Finnish designers have worked together for decades to build on their shared values of several generations. Similarly, Finnish architects and orchestra conductors generate a wave of multigenerational forces. Sweetly, the meaning of architect Alvar Aalto's family name. Mr. Wave. Later, Harri gave a home to a MorrowSound 3D showroom system in his Helsinki design company offices. We have collaborated on the show Sound Glass Space 2012 in the Akusmata Gallery in Helsinki and on a floating chair for listening to 3D sound.  Harri's design includes sound, light and physical materials. Suomalaisen muotoilun kulta-aika alkoi 1950-luvulla kun suuret nimet voittivat Milanon triennaalien palkintoja. Alvar Aalto, Kaj Franck ja Tapio Wirkkala loivat Suomi-kuvaa selkeän arkkitehtuurin, demokraattisen astiaston ja jäisten Ultima Thule- lasien kautta New Yorkin lennoilla. Myöhemmin Suomi-kuvaa rikastuttivat Timo Sarpaneva, Oiva Toikka, Björn Weckström ja Eero Aarnio. Onko maestrojen aika ohi? Olemmeko saavuttamassa taas aseman uuden muotoilun maana ulkomailla? Onko kansainvälistyminen myytti? Onko nykymuotoilu tradition muokkailua? Millaisia esineitä maailma ei enää tarvitse? Ohjelman vieraina ovat valokuvaaja Katja Hagelstam, muotoilijat Antrei Hartikainen ja Milla Vaahtera. Ohjelman juontajana on Pia-Maria Lehtola.

Episode 115 of A is for Architecture is a conversation with Sofia Singler, Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow and College Lecturer in Architecture at St John's College, Cambridge. We discuss parts of her book, The Religious Architecture of Alvar, Aino and Elissa Aalto, which she published with Lund Humphries in 2023. Sofia says “my sense is that [Alvar Aalto] really valued religion and not just Lutheranism, and Finland, […] and specifically Christianity, as part of an unchanging European cultural tradition. And the attraction, the appeal, the value, the beauty of religion, and Christianity, in particular for him was that the message was always the same. And I suppose for that reason, the idea of renewing things and shaking things up and coming up with a new liturgy and a new building type felt a bit too radical for him, which is really interesting, given that, of course, he was quite radical himself as a designer. […] when it comes to religious projects, I think there was a degree of perhaps nervousness […] Out of a fear that perhaps these changes were too much and that they risked losing some of the cultural value of religion'. You can find Sofia on the Cambridge University website here, and the book is linked above.   Thanks for listening. +  Music credits: Bruno Gillick

To the cult British interior and furniture designer Ilse Crawford, interiors too often take a backseat to architecture. Through her humanistic, systems-thinking, “Frame for Life” approach, however, Crawford has shown how interiors and architecture should instead be viewed on the same plane and, as she puts it on this episode of Time Sensitive, “walk hand in hand.” Widely known for creating indoor spaces that are notable in their tactility, warmth, and comfort—environments that incorporate, to use her phrase, “visceral materiality”—Crawford oversees her namesake London-based design studio, Studioilse, which she launched in 2003, and whose projects include the first Soho House members' club in New York, the Ett Hem hotel in Stockholm, and the Cathay Pacific lounges in Hong Kong. Crawford is also the founder of the department of Man and Wellbeing at the Design Academy Eindhoven, in the Netherlands, which she headed for two decades. Prior to her career as a designer, she was the celebrated founding editor of Elle Decoration U.K.On this episode, Crawford discusses her approach to crafting beautiful, highly original spaces that push against today's speedy, copy-paste, Instagram-moment world; her early career in media; and her personal definition of the word “slow.”Special thanks to our Season 9 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:[5:09] StudioIlse[7:25] A Frame for Life[58:32] Design Academy Eindhoven[7:25] Svenkst Tenn[7:25] Ett Hem[16:36] Jeanette Mix[1:02:51] Cathay Pacific[47:42] Elle Decoration[29:11] The Eyes of the Skin[33:52] Alvar Aalto[33:52] Paimio Sanatorium[33:52] Christopher Alexander[31:35] Sensual Home[35:24] Leonard Koren[35:46] Frida Escobedo[47:42] Architect's Journal[47:42] The World of Interiors[47:42] Min Hogg[52:48] Donna Karan[54:04] Soho House[54:04] Babington House[1:00:08] Home Is Where the Heart Is?

In episode 6/ 3 of A is for Architecture, architect, writer, teacher and researcher, Charlotte Skene Catling talks about her practice Skene Cailtling de la Peña, which she founded in 2003 with Jaime de la Peña. The practice's work has been widely published and to considerable critical acclaim, blending as it does context, occupation/ use, earth, soil, sedimentation and historic records, in a process they term geoarchaeology. The term has academic connotations, and how this is actualized in Skene Catling de la Peña's practice is worth hearing told. It particularly fascinating where it touches on Aino and Alvar Aalto's Toppila silo in Oulu, Finland, which they are turning into a regenerative/ cultural space with the Factum Foundation. You can find Charlotte all over the internet. She wrote a column for the Architectural Review, Domus and The Burlington Magazine, teaches at the London School of Architecture, Instagrams and LinkedIns. There's a lovely article at Drawing Matter on The Dairy House, excerpted from Françoise Astorg Bollack's Material Transfers: Metaphor, Craft, and Place in Contemporary Architecture, published by  Monacelli Press in 2020. Have a look at Flint House, which was the RIBA House of the Year 2015, and is covered most stylishly in this Architectural Review vid. Deep stuff. Subterranean, even... Join us as we explore the passion, creativity, and purpose behind the most inspiring spaces and projects and dive deep with those who create them consistently. I'm your host, Nikki Klugh, and I'll be your guide as we journey through the hearts and minds of sacred space architects and designers who are driven by compassion and authenticity. _________________________________________________ Robert Charles Bio: Robert Otis Charles was born in the projects of East Orange, New Jersey. He is a descendant of Costa Rican and West-Indian parents. Robert is the second youngest of four children. Robert established his career based on his creative talents. He developed his passion for multi-disciplinary creativity around the age of five. He held on to his creativity because he was very limited in his physical ability because of his long-term battle with chronic asthma and his encounter with bone cancer at age 21. Robert drew with crayons; built with his beloved Lego and wooden blocks; built go-carts and tree houses of wood; built scale models; supported his father in providing professional photography; and initiated an ongoing livelihood with the trumpet all before his teenage years. He was introduced to architecture by his older sibling and developed a distinct love for architectural design at the age of twelve. His father, (Neil Charles, Sr.), kindled his fire for drawing with excellence. “Pop” Charles purchased Robert's first drafting table shortly after his demonstrated commitment to architecture, drawing, and building. Robert's father continually invested in his career from his youth and procured a large loan that initiated his architectural college training. Robert was educated at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University where he received both his undergraduate and professional degrees in Architecture. He has received several architectural awards including the distinguished Alpha Roe Chi Medal of Leadership, Service, and Merit, and led design on award-winning projects over his 30-year career. He is a current member of the American Institute of Architects and the lead design architect at LBA Architects. Also, in 1998, Robert established ROC STUDIOS INTERNATIONAL, INC which is his own multi-disciplinary design studio. His studio provides visual arts, creative branding, and professional photography. The following famous architects and artists influence his style of designing buildings and producing graphic works. The architects that inspire Robert are Frank Lloyd Wright, Kenzo Tange, Le Corbusier, Richard Meier, Frank Gehry, Santiago Calatrava, Eliel Saarinen, and Alvar Aalto. Artists like Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Paul Cezanne, and Georges Braque inspire Robert's style of producing abstract graphics. Photographers such as Neil Charles, Sr., Ansel Adams, David Eggleston, and a host of others influence Robert's photography. Prominent political officials, doctors, lawyers, architects, business leaders, bishops, pastors, other artists, organizations, churches, and the general public have collected his artworks and photography. His works have also been displayed in public facilities including those that he designed. Robert is a passionate man who is a joyfully exuberant nerd and enjoys staying fit, public speaking, and playing his horns. Robert readily acknowledges his many blessings including his creatively gifted wife (Shantae). __________________________________________ Thank you for being a part of our heart-centered community, and until next time, may your life be filled with sacred spaces that reflect the beauty of your soul. Remember, FIRST We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.

Good design is usually very simple. Its flipside is kitsch, which is usually overly fussy.  And yet maybe kitsch has its place in the design world. The best of kitsch makes us smile, the worst makes us shudder. Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but a plastic chair shaped like a throne has as much right to a room as an Alvar Aalto plywood recliner. Perhaps we need to know about one to appreciate the other. So kitsch in fact helps us understand, in its silly, devious way, exactly what good design is.

Imagine you rent your home. Now imagine your landlord gave you a straight choice: (1) pay rent for forty years, renewing the lease biennially for the rest of your life, or (2) pay the same rent for thirty years at the end of which your landlord gives you the house.Pick your answer, but don't tell me yet, because I have one more pair of choices for you, this one from the funding side of things. This time I want you to imagine yourself as an investment manager at a pension fund with £1 billion to invest, would you rather place it in (1) a 40-year gilt to earn an inflation-adjusted return of zero or (2) buy the right to receive monthly rent from a club of motivated renters that give you an inflation-adjusted yield of two or three per cent for forty years? OK, now let me guess... hmmm, you picked two and two, right? Yeah, I'm not a genius for knowing that. It's simple. And yet... also quite complicated. My first degree was in structured finance, so I really should have a handle on this bond pricing stuff, and how to split income streams from asset growth, but when I went from university into lending instead, I promptly forgot it all.My guest today, Ike Udechuku, has no such blind spot. With a, frankly astonishing, track record in the bond markets and a passion for property and property management, he looks perfectly positioned to shake up these two huge industries with Pathway Points - which will give both investors and renters a way to answer 'two' to those simple questions. You can learn more about Pathway at https://thepathway.club/ (which includes some great little video clips explaining the process), but you should also follow them on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/company/pathway-points/) where they publish regular insightsIf you're an investor, you can reach out to Ike on LinkedIn to start a conversation: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ikeudechuku/We mentioned Ampersand House, and if you'd like to see more of that, check out this great article from 2017: https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/ampersand-house-everything-is-for-saleIke mentions Sharia mortgages in our conversation.

Inspired by Goethe's quote, “music is liquid architecture, and architecture is frozen music,” the Portland new music ensemble Third Angle will team up with the choir group Cappella Romana to transform one of Oregon's most famous buildings — one you might not even know exists — into an interactive soundscape. The Mount Angel Abbey library in St. Benedict, Oregon, is one of only two buildings in the U.S. designed by noted Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. From its facade, it looks like an unassuming, one-story structure on the edge of a hill. But as you enter, the building opens up like a giant fan, two floors spreading out in a big arc with each aisle radiating from the circulation desk. And despite the “Quiet” signs, it's no stranger to music: Duke Ellington and his orchestra played its opening in 1970.“We love context and we love telling stories,” said Ron Blessinger, the artistic director of Third Angle. “ We love the way that music can function at the center of all these disciplines and enrich the experience of a visual space.” Read the full story: http://www.opb.org/news/article/third-angle-and-cappella-romana-collaborate-to-merge-sound-with-architecture
