Adam Hambrick joins us this week on the Stories Behind the Songs podcast! Adam has several huge artist cuts along with a successful artist career of his own. Some of my favorite cuts of his that we'll talk more about in this week's episode are “How Not To” released by Dan + Shay (which was actually almost cut by Rascal Flatts) and “Somebody Else Will” by Justin Moore (which was ALSO almost cut by Rascal Flatts). He also recently put out his debut full-length solo album, “Free Country” back in 2023 and has racked up several million streams on his 2018 single “Rockin' All Night Long.” Make sure to stay in the loop with what Adam's got going on - he has an unreleased song, “Oxford” that will be coming out soon that has been a HUGE hit and fan favorite on The Listening Room stage when he's played it here. In this episode, Adam also talks about being asked to get up on stage with Justin Moore to sing “Small Town USA,” learning to discern between a hit and just another song, the realities of record and publishing deals in Nashville, the story behind his song - “Oxford” as well as an awesome full-performance of the song, and going hard at Tin Roof after getting a song cut. If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to share it with your friends and give us a follow. Sharing all the Stories Behind the Songs is our #1 priority, and it's because of listeners like YOU that we are able to continue doing it. I had such a good time catching up with Adam and hope you enjoy the episode as much as we did! Originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Pete has been a songwriter in Nashville since 2009. When Pete was a child, his father wrote and sang country songs. Eventually, Pete started playing around with his father's recording equipment, ultimately developing a love of music that brought him to Nashville. He has written for artists such as Tim McGraw, Darius Rucker, Walker Hayes, Rascal Flatts, Alana Springsteen, Trea Landon, Jerrod Niemann and more. Most recently, Pete produced Monument recording artist Brandon Ratcliff's debut EP, due in 2019. He had the debut singles “Rockin' All Night Long” from UMG Nashville's Adam Hambrick and “Rules of Breaking Up” from Monument Records' Brandon Ratcliff, the latter of whose debut album he produced. Some of Good's recent cuts include “Truth Is” by Tim McGraw, “Quick, Fast, In A Hurry” by Rascal Flatts and Rachel Wammack, “Black Sheep” by Walker Hayes, “Last One To Leave” by Alex Hall featuring Brad Paisley, and “Girlfriend” by Alana Springsteen. We are also honored that Pete's good friend, Matt Stange, graces us with his co-host skills as Mr. Ryan Konz was busy being a husband and dad! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mandate/message

On this special bonus episode of The Fred Minnick Show, Adam Hambrick is the guest. The country singer-songwriter is a Capitol Records artist who has written songs for artists like Dan + Shay, Justin Moore, Lindsay Ell, the Eli Young Band and others. In 2019, his solo single "Rockin' All Night Long" hit No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. His latest EP, Give Her a Rose, was released in December 2020. On the show, Adam and Fred talk songwriting, Nashville, Elvis Presley, whiskey, cellphones and plenty more. Whiskeys tasted: Angel's Envy Finished in Tawny Port Casks (21:16) Old Forester Rye (22:49) Kentucky Owl 11 Year Rye (22:49) Michter's 20 Year (38:09) EPISODE SUMMARY Fred and Adam touch on a number of points, such as: Fred starts the show by noting this bonus interview with Adam Hambrick happened in person, pre-Covid. Adam talks about the writing of the Lindsay Ell hit, "I Don't Love You," which he co-wrote, and how he got into writing songs. Adam talks about singing and how he's been singing since age 3, followed by his shift into songwriting - and then back into being a recording artist. Adam says it's "the Wild West" in terms of putting out music in modern times. Adam's impression of Will Ferrell impersonating Harry Caray is a highlight at around the 17:36 mark. Hambrick says he's a slow sipper and details his relationship with whiskey. Fred then breaks down Adam's palate by asking his food and flavor preferences. The verdict: Sweet tooth - but not too Adam: "I'm sneaky old. I've got two kids at home and a mortgage." Adam explains how songwriters do what they do and tells Fred he essentially does something similar with his whiskey and bourbon writing. They talk about how modern phones have become a constant distraction and shortened our attention spans, changing how we think and how we process information. Adam admits this knowledge has given him a "healthy disdain" for his phone. Fred notes that he is in the "eyeballs" business - attracting people's eyes - while Adam is in the "earballs" business, drawing chuckle from the songwriter. Of the Michter's 20-year-old bourbon, Adam says, "Oh my goodness. Holy cow." That about sums it up. They talk "special occasion" whiskeys. Fred says, "You know what's a special occasion to me? Waking up in the morning." On the way out, Fred and Adam decide to "solve some world problems." At that point, the conversation turns back to how cell phones have taken over our world. Adam notes that positive reinforcement on social media offers a hit of dopamine, which makes it a literal addiction. But then they talk about bologna sandwiches and mayonnaise. QUOTABLES Asked if he considers himself more singer or songwriter, Adam responds, "It's kind of all one river. When I'm writing songs, I'm always writing for myself in some way. And sometimes those songs don't fit the project, they don't fit what you're going to put out, so you just leave it open-handed and, like, if this fits for somebody else, by all means please record it." Surprise! This is the first extra Write You a Song podcast that is actually a full interview. Granger Smith's image is that of a good ol' country boy- he's got songs galore about pickups and dirt roads. And, of course, he's got his comic alter-ego, Earl Dibbles Jr. But Granger is a lot more than that. He's a bright, creative, enterprising (Yee Yee Apparel) and above all honest: honest about himself, and about the music business. He's an extremely interesting guy and so, while Adam Hambrick is still the "current" December Write You a Song podcast guest (and absolutely worth the listen if you haven't yet), spend a half hour with Granger, and you'll come away with a new appreciation for his music, and even more so for the man. Growing up in Corinth, Mississippi, country singer/songwriter Adam Hambrick loved to sing, but held himself back from the spotlight because he felt that kind of modesty was more in line with the roots and values of his small-town, and the people who lived there. It wasn't until he went to college that he started to assert himself as a musician and decided fully that he should give a career in music a try. Moving to Nashville, he initially stayed in the background, albeit as a successful songwriter, with big hits for artists like Justin Moore and Dan and Shay. But with his first chart hit as a singer, Rockin All Night Long (released in 2018), Adam is stepping up to the microphone himself and good thing, because he's blessed with an uncanny vocal range that belongs on radio. Thing is, his songwriting range is just as uncanny: he compares his talent to those of small-batch bourbon makers: he sees what he does as a craft, which is probably why he can pen stone-cold country songs as Old Habits for Justin Moore and Miranda Lambert, but also be fully present in contemporary country, as his work with Dan and Shay and Lindsay Ell demonstrate. It's a combination that gives his artistry uncanny potential, and it'll be exciting to see how his career develops in the years to come. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
