IT Privacy and Security FAQ - Week Ending December 10th, 2024 1. What happened to Stoli, and how can I protect my business from the same fate? A ransomware attack crippled Stoli Group's IT systems, leading to bankruptcy for its US and Kentucky Owl subsidiaries. The attack highlighted the importance of robust cybersecurity measures. To safeguard your business, prioritize secure IT systems, keep software updated, maintain regular backups, and educate employees about phishing and malware threats. 2. Is my phone call safe? What's this about a Chinese hacking campaign? A Chinese cyber-espionage campaign, Salt Typhoon, targeted telecom networks in at least two dozen countries, including major US carriers. The attackers stole metadata to identify high-value targets and intercept communications. While classified information wasn't compromised, this emphasizes the need for vigilance. Limit sharing sensitive information over calls or texts, and consider end-to-end encryption tools for added security. 3. What is the FCC doing about telecom cybersecurity? The FCC is proposing mandatory cybersecurity risk management plans for telecom companies and will enforce them with potential fines or criminal penalties. This follows concerns over persistent security lapses and aims to prevent breaches like the recent Chinese hacking campaign. 4. I use Google Messages. Is it truly end-to-end encrypted? Google Messages' claims of "end-to-end encryption" are misleading. While RCS chats within Google Messages can be encrypted, SMS messages and those sent to non-Google users are not. Always verify encryption details and don't rely on vague claims to protect your privacy. 5. What is Sauron, and should I be concerned about its home security approach? Sauron is a startup offering high-tech home security using drones, cameras, facial recognition, and 24/7 monitoring. While appealing for its advanced features, the company's use of facial recognition and potential for aggressive countermeasures raises privacy concerns. Weigh these factors carefully when considering such systems for your home. 6. Is Solana safe? What happened with the code library attack? A supply chain attack compromised Solana's JavaScript SDK, leading to the theft of $184,000 from digital wallets. While the malicious code was quickly removed, it highlights the risks of open-source libraries. Developers and users should prioritize upgrading libraries, rotating keys, and staying informed about security updates from reliable sources like CoinDesk and The Block. 7. Can I now use my cellphone anywhere with SpaceX's Starlink? SpaceX launched new satellites enabling direct cellphone connectivity through Starlink. While initially limited to text messaging, the service will eventually support voice, data, and IoT devices. This promises global coverage even in remote areas. However, pricing details and encryption information remain unclear. Stay tuned for updates and explore how this service could benefit you. 8. What's the main takeaway from this week's IT security news? This week's news emphasizes the growing cybersecurity threats across various domains, from ransomware attacks to sophisticated state-sponsored espionage and supply chain vulnerabilities. Staying informed, adopting proactive security measures, and carefully evaluating new technologies are crucial steps in protecting yourself and your data.

Established in 1938, Stoli Vodka has long been a fixture on the liquor market, though it appears it will need more than its legacy to carry it into the next generation.Stoli Group has revealed that its U.S. subsidiaries, Stoli Group USA and Kentucky Owl, have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and while the reasons behind the decision are diverse, one stands out: Stoli USA says a ransomware attack played a role.A November filing contends that an August attack on the firm prevented the U.S. subsidiaries from complying with their lenders' reporting requirements. According to the CyberRisk Alliance, the attack was “not widely reported and has not been claimed by or attributed to any specific ransomware group.”Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.

There is nothing more romantic than the story of a revived brand, and none seems to have done it as well as Kentucky Owl. Founded in 1879, the brand created Whiskey until Prohibition shut it down. A hundred years later, the great-great-grandson of the founder revived the family business with a view to respecting the past but looking to the future. And with that, a boutique Bourbon business known for its limited releases was reborn. Its latest release, the Maighstir (which is Gaelic for master) epitomises the creativity and disruptive nature of the brand. To find out more, we talk to Master Distiller Dr. Maureen Robinson about blending, legacy and turning Bourbon into Scotch
The crew reviews a couple of ryes. We compare and contrast the Bulliett 12 yr and Kentucky Owl Batch 1 Ryes. It's always fun when you can put a recent release up to a release thats 7 years old. What is your favorite rye, new and old?

Man, do I love me some double oaked whiskey! It seems that most whiskey drinkers feel the same way.I am about to review another one - 2XO American Oak. And, I can't wait!Dixon Dedman, the original creator of Kentucky Owl before the brand was purchased by Stoli in 2017, is behind 2XO. His American Oak is positioned as the affordable option in the 2XO line. They are "twice-oaking" the whiskey by inserting 8-10-foot charred oak chains into the barrel, which equate to about 75% of the surface of a new barrel. How well will this process work? In today's show, we had the incredible honor of speaking with Maureen Robinson, the new master blender at Kentucky Owl. Maureen has an impressive 45-year history in the Scotch whisky industry and has recently come out of retirement to join the bourbon world. Maureen shared her journey from studying to be a pharmacist to becoming a master blender, a transition fueled by her passion for the science of whisky. She discussed the similarities and differences between blending Scotch and bourbon, emphasizing the importance of balance and the excitement of learning about bourbon's unique charring levels and mash bills. We delved into the creation of Kentucky Owl's Maester, a bourbon crafted in a Scotch style, and Maureen walked us through the flavor journey of this special blend. She also touched on the importance of maintaining consistency in core products like Kentucky Owl Confiscated and Wiseman, and the role of new distillate in the blending process. Looking ahead, Maureen hinted at the potential for Kentucky Owl to explore new innovations, global expansion, and possibly even American single malts. She also discussed the brand's approach to barrel finishing and the potential for single cask releases. Maureen's dedication to her craft is evident, and she's already thinking about training a successor to continue the legacy of quality blending at Kentucky Owl. Her story is a testament to the evolving world of whisky, where tradition meets innovation.

This is just a week after Episode 062 - Room 206, so we are feeling loose. There's a very thin thread of a storyline in this episode, but we do cover Kentucky Owl from Kentucky of course, Monk's Road also from Kentucky and David E. from Hershey PA. Alton and Kratt did their homework, while Kurton and DEW just interrupted the entire time. We sample a great range of flavors mixed together with plenty of sharp banter between Kurt and Kratt. Shocker. Grab a bottle and a glass, sit back, enjoy the episode and ask yourself, whoooooo would you want to share a bourbon with at a concert of a lifetime. #DavidE, #KentuckyOwl, #MonksRoad
Every once in a while you run across a brand that has captured lightening in a bottle. For me, I see that as Old Carter. Mark and Sherri Carter join the show to talk about their extensive background in the wine industry, but how bourbon eventually captured his interest and became a new passion. Though he knew how to build a highly-rated wine brand, entering the bourbon world brought fresh challenges. Mark and Sherri connected with Dixon Dedman and launched Kentucky Owl until it sold. After the sale, they stayed focused on super premium bourbons to target whiskey aficionados. If a barrel didn't suit their ideal flavor profile, they would put it back in the rick rather than compromise quality. But it's not a complete story without a bit of legal trouble and the Carter name has been no stranger to lawsuits so stick around to hear that one. Show Notes: Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about infinity blends You had a big background in wine but when did bourbon come into your life? I said we needed answers, but now I have more questions. Fever Tree announced for the US a Bloody Mary Mixer, Classic Margarita Mixer, and Light Margarita Mixer. Get the details on the new US mixers at the link https://tinyurl.com/224v6mgy Never Lacking Lagers, with this list of the delectable and crushable beers. Löwenbräu is probably one of the most classic beers on here. Jack's Abbey House Lager is a classic new brew, the same goes for Firestone Walker's Pivo Pils. Old Aggie, Moonlight Brewing Co's Death and Taxes, and a Schwarzbier called Yellowhammer Midnight Special are here too. The list doesn't end there though and why should it? Get them all at the link https://tinyurl.com/2con58es The Boozebuddy Update is brought to you by Green Mountain Payments - helping local business owners save thousands of dollars by providing complimentary credit card processing equipment and zero cost credit card processing. Visit greenmountainpayments.com or posandzero.com today! Underdog Upstart Whiskey competes. That's the word on Dixon Dedman's new 2XO whiskey brand, that's said to stand up against much higher-priced bottles of bourbon. Dedman was the master blender and cofounder of Kentucky Owl & left a few years after Stoli acquired the brand. As the story goes “The name 2XO means “two times oak.” Admittedly, the palate punch that results isn't for everyone. In this episode, we are joined by Dixon Dedman of 2XO Whiskey. Dixon has become a prominent figure in the whiskey community. He revived Kentucky Owl, learned how to blend whiskey, became very successful doing it, sold the brand, consulted for many brands, and started his new blending adventure - 2XO Whiskey. All by the time he was 40!! I sat down with Dixon to discuss it all. We hit on all parts of his journey through the business. We also chat a lot about 2XO and what he has in store for the brand. This is one you don't want to miss! Feel free to reach out to me in the comments with any questions you might have! The stock market and the bourbon market share one thing in common. They are both impossible to time. If you get in at the right time, maybe you don't have to wait tens of years to make a return on your investment, but if you're too late then you could see a decline. However, in bourbon, there seems to be one person that has time working in his favor, and that's Dixon Dedman. We invite Dixon to come on the show for a third appearance to talk about a few things because it seems like his timing is always perfect. He sold Kentucky Owl to Stoli after being on the market a short period of time, but now that he is officially done with Kentucky Owl we ask him about how he feels and what he learned through the process. After leaving Stoli, he worked with The Brindiamo Group, who we also had on the podcast back on episode 182, and he worked for them for a short period of time where he got an inside glimpse into brand and investment consulting. And now, he's launching his own brand called 2XO which is perfect in this current climate when bourbon is hot and double barreling might be even hotter. Show Notes: Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about rubbing whiskey on your hands to nose. Are you still making fried chicken on the weekends? Do you have any regrets after selling Kentucky Owl to Stoli? What did you take away and learn from working with Stoli? How did your relationship with Brindiamo begin? How many barrels are there on the open market where people are flipping them? What profiles or types of bourbon do you like to work with? Is 2XO and Kentucky Owl going to be similar or different? Is there a healthy pipeline of barrels to continue building the brand? @dixon_dedman Support this podcast on Patreon

I am finally sitting down with a bottle of Dixon Dedman's 2XO “The Phoenix Blend”. This blend takes some sourced whiskey that Dixon blended and finishes it in a secondary barrel. Two times oaked - hence “2XO”.I really enjoyed some of Dixon's Kentucky Owl batches, but this is a new venture. I didn't know what to expect when opening this one up. In this episode, Matt tastes the Kentucky Owl Takumi Edition.
Mark and Sherri Carter have, in short order, build a reputation of incredible whiskies. On top of their already legendary winery, they now have a Kentucky-based empire of barrel proof whiskies. When they got (back) to Kentucky and kicked off Kentucky Owl, I don't think even they thought they'd be here, with ryes, bourbons, American whiskies all sought after by collectors and snatched up as soon as they come out. The horse - drawn by Sherri - is out of the barn. There's always a new batch to come, and a new excellence to be reached. Count on the Carters to find it. _________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so! It's Bourbon Community Roundtable #67 and this time it's all about limited editions. New records are being set for bottles at auction and many of us are thinking twice about opening up bottles. Red Hook went for $47k. The 5L bottle of OFC 1982 went for $60k. With so many LTEs, how do you determine what will make a bottle valuable in the future? Our friends over at Breaking Bourbon had a good email last week that talked about holiday bottles. Kentucky Owl recently released their St. Patrick's Day expression, Barrell Bourbon has New Year, Smokewagon has done a halloween, and Maker's Mark has one for almost everything. Are these gimmicks or are holiday bottles here to stay? Show Notes: Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about glassware and books. How do you determine what will make a bottle valuable in the future? Are holiday bottles a gimmick or are they here to stay? @bourbonr @breakingbourbon @sippn_corn Support this podcast on Patreon
