In this episode, from an evening seminar hosted by the Priscilla & Aquila Centre, a Centre of Moore College, on Monday 29 April 2024, Charlie Skrine, Rector of All Souls Langham Place in London, speaks about complementarianism—the view that God created men and women equal but different—and what complementarianism looks like in a range of contexts.Charlie begins with Ephesians 5 verses 22 to 33 and moves outward to examine where the idea is found in the rest of the Bible. Then he discusses why complementarianism is so controversial, how it plays out in various contexts—in church, in ministry teams, in families and in the wider culture—and what happens when pastors neglect to impart the good teaching of the Bible about men and women to the people they're ministering to.To view the video of this talk, visit the Priscilla & Aquila Centre website. For more audio resources, visit the Moore College website. A lot of paid youth and children's work in our churches is short-term. We see youth workers and children's workers as a stepping stone to 'bigger and better things'! How can we reclaim the value of this ministry in its own right and invest to train and deploy life-long workers in this area? In this episode of In:Dependence, Adrian Reynolds (FIEC Head of National Ministries) is joined by Trev Pearce (Senior Minister (Children and Youth), All Souls Langham Place, London) to talk about youth and children's ministry and how church leaders can value those who serve young people in the church. As it happens, she was a member of All Souls Langham Place as an older teenager, because her parents sent her to London to study for A levels. So she had several encounters with John Stott as a young woman. Little did she know then that she would end up working on the manuscript of a major work undertaken by Prof Sam Berry and left unfinished when he died. This was a compilation of everything his long-standing friend John Stott had written or taught about the environment and natural world, from a surprisingly extensive archive of material. John RW Stott Pioneer Outreach Worker Today on Partakers Podcasts, we are looking back on the life of one of the most influential leaders of the Christian Church in the 20th Century. 27th April 2021 was the centenary of his birth. That leader, was John Stott. Come on in! Introduction G'day and welcome to Partake!  Tonight I want to give a reflection somebody who is indeed a servant of the Lord and took great delight in all of Scripture.  That person, is John RW Stott. By necessity, this is just a very brief introduction of the life of Reverend John Stott, and I concentrate mainly on his role as an evangelist. John Stott holds that he is more "an activist than a thinker", which is certainly evident in his ministry as a pioneer outreach worker.  From the evidence of his life, we can see that has indeed fulfilled this thought. Together we look briefly at: His life and ministry Being a pioneering outreach worker His outreach theology Outreach locally Outreach globally Influence A lesson to be heeded   Conclusion John Stott's life exemplifies radical outreach and innovation, blended with a desire to serve Jesus Christ as Lord.  He is truly one of the twentieth centuries master servants of Jesus Christ.  To the staff and many members of the congregation of All Souls Langham Place down through the years, he is simply known as "Uncle John".  He is unique in the Anglican church in that he has always been associated with the one church throughout his life and ministry. As we have seen here briefly, he was certainly one of them, and it is all to the glory of God that He raised up his servant, Uncle John. 27th April 2021 is the centenary of Uncle John's birth in central London, as well as being roughly 10 years since his death. As a special podcast treat, we have dug out an old conversation Mark Meynell had back in 2013 with the one person that John's ministry could never have done without: Frances Whitehead. Having worked for the BBC next door to All Souls Langham Place, and converted at All Souls in a process that began with her attending a lunchtime concert in the building, the church of All Souls became her life. She was recruited by Stott to be ‘Parish Secretary' and would spend the next two decades working with him in that role (only addressing him as ‘Rector'). When his ministry began to expand, affirmed by his appointment as Rector Emeritus in 1975, not only was Frances allowed to start addressing him by his first name, but she formally became his secretary and organiser. She typed up every single one of his books from his manuscripts, fielded every phone call and managed all his correspondence, in a working partnership that lasted over 50 years. She was a force to be reckoned with and a dear friend to many around the world. This is inevitably an edited version of the conversation - if you would like to hear the whole thing, which includes more about her own upbringing and experiences, go to Mark's blog. To get hold of the 2nd edition of Julia Cameron's book, John Stott's Right Hand: The untold story of Frances Whitehead, go directly to the publisher page. Mark says: We had a lovely surprise a while back when a mutual friend who used to visit Frances weekly after she had moved out of London said that she wanted us to have a plant from her garden. So, just a couple of weeks ago, we planted this Peony in one of our beds - we don't have great green-fingered credentials but so far so good! It still looks alive!

When many people think of those who are religious, it seems to me they go to one of two extremes. Either  they think of someone who is arrogant and opinionated in their beliefs (especially to those who believe or think differently) or someone who is so nebulous and abstract in their thinking about God that they appear to accept anything and everything. On this podcast interview my co-host Andrew Horton and I attempt to go beyond these stereotypes to something we call spiritual maturity. We discuss what does a spiritually mature person look like in the most positive sense? Whether you are of no faith or any faith tradition, do join us in this fascinating discussion. Here is a taster of our discussion (but to really benefit you will have to listen to the full 33 minute conversation): We define spiritual maturity in terms of: Who am I becoming as a person? How do I look at my weaknesses and failings? What kind of person am I like to be around others? We also unpack the following characteristics of spiritual maturity, or as Gordon Macdonald describes them, 'deep people': Demonstrating a consistent loyalty to Jesus: His life, His teachings, His challenges. Have a hunger to keep on growing in every aspect of their lives regardless of age. Love to inspire and lead others to grow in their personal faith. Are people you love to be with because they love life and seem to know the best ways to live it. Gordon Macdonald describes much more than this, but we summarise with an observation from the theologian Chris Wright in his observation of the late John Stott (1921-2011), former minister of the church my family and I attend at All Souls Langham Place in London: "There are (three) characteristics I have observed (in John Stott) that I will emulate for the rest of my life. The three are rigorous self-discipline, absolute humility, and a prayerful spirit. Perhaps the most important thing I've learned is that faithfulness to God is a combination of these three things." A helpful practical understanding of this from Chris Goswami is how prayer concerns how I relate to God; self-discipline is about how I relate to myself and humility is about how I should relate to others. What questions and thoughts does this discussion raise for you? You may also find of interest the following posts: What Does A Spiritually Mature Person Look Like?
