Stott etablerte Langham Partnership for å fremme forkynnelse. I denne episoden snakker Mark Meynell, som jobber i denne organisasjonen, om Stott og arven etter ham.
Mark Meynell chats to Corey Widmer, from Virginia USA, who was John Stott's study assistant for three years in the late 90s. For many years, John had a study assistant, usually a young university graduate, and often they were from the states. Corey is now the lead pastor of a church and recently completed a PhD. He sees Stott as having a great impact on not just his preaching but also his engagement with current social issues. Listen to the episode for many stories and reflections from someone who worked extremely closely with John Stott and saw different aspects of his life and ministry. We're pleased to share a session led by Malcolm Guite and Mark Meynell called “Poetry: Imagination's Wake-Up Call” from 2020's Hutchmoot: Homebound, in both video and audio form. Despite its detractors, poetry couldn't be more vital in our present age, since it is one of the most powerful means of reconciling our enlightenment-divorced reason and imagination. In conversation with Mark Meynell, the poet, priest, and scholar Malcolm Guite draws from Samuel Taylor Coleridge, C. S. Lewis, and others to make his case. Join Ed, Amy and Mark as they discuss life going back to school after the time we have had...The "back to school" week can be difficult for a number of reasons - there can be big emotions around starting a new school, or even just returning after a good Summer holiday. Perhaps this is even more pronounced with all the disruption around COVID. Sometimes we can feel like a spiritual failure if we experience these difficult emotions, but actually, they can be a helpful warning light to help us see that something is not right. Emotions are not a good barometer for our spiritual health. What would be a distinctively Christian approach to things like anxiety, depression and panic? We often need to preach to ourselves, reminding ourselves of what we know to be true about God; going back to the cross, where the many wonderful aspects of God's character come together. How can we communicate this in a simple way for children to understand? "Know the Lord" - remembering what his track record is, and therefore what he will do in the future. Do not be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God. We don't know what school is going to be like, but what do we know? We know that God is trustworthy. How does God treat people through the Bible? That shows us what God is like, and how we will care for us through our fears. The job of a parent is to work out what can I say about God that speaks into my child's fears so that they can say "I'm ok because He has me".Psalm 46 speaks powerfully into situations of anxiety and helps us get to the point of trusting God amid storms, rooting our response in the truth of verse 1: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."What does it look like for a child to say "God is our fortress?" Knowing that God is with us through all the storms; he is our safe place.People: Ed Drew - Director of FIKAmy - Faith in KidsMark Meynell - born in London and works as a freelance writer, a chaplain in Whitehall, and Director (Europe & Caribbean) for Langham Preaching (part of Langham Partnership). One of the biggest reasons for people to reject Christianity is because of their experience of the Church or other Christians behaving badly. How can we deal with abuse of power, hypocrisy and loss of trust? In an age of scandal, misinformation and conspiracy theories how can we point people to the love, truth and safety of Jesus Himself? Andy and Kristi speak with author and pastor Mark Meynell about these incredibly important questions.Mark Meynell is Director (Europe and Caribbean) for Langham Preaching (one of the 3 programmes of Langham Partnership). An ordained Anglican minister, he has served in churches in the UK (in Oxford, Sheffield and London) and taught (and for a year was Acting Principal) at a small seminary in Kampala, Uganda. 27th April 2021 is the centenary of Uncle John's birth in central London, as well as being roughly 10 years since his death. As a special podcast treat, we have dug out an old conversation Mark Meynell had back in 2013 with the one person that John's ministry could never have done without: Frances Whitehead. Having worked for the BBC next door to All Souls Langham Place, and converted at All Souls in a process that began with her attending a lunchtime concert in the building, the church of All Souls became her life. She was recruited by Stott to be ‘Parish Secretary' and would spend the next two decades working with him in that role (only addressing him as ‘Rector'). When his ministry began to expand, affirmed by his appointment as Rector Emeritus in 1975, not only was Frances allowed to start addressing him by his first name, but she formally became his secretary and organiser. She typed up every single one of his books from his manuscripts, fielded every phone call and managed all his correspondence, in a working partnership that lasted over 50 years. She was a force to be reckoned with and a dear friend to many around the world. This is inevitably an edited version of the conversation - if you would like to hear the whole thing, which includes more about her own upbringing and experiences, go to Mark's blog. To get hold of the 2nd edition of Julia Cameron's book, John Stott's Right Hand: The untold story of Frances Whitehead, go directly to the publisher page. Mark says: We had a lovely surprise a while back when a mutual friend who used to visit Frances weekly after she had moved out of London said that she wanted us to have a plant from her garden. So, just a couple of weeks ago, we planted this Peony in one of our beds - we don't have great green-fingered credentials but so far so good! It still looks alive!

All of us who dare to stand up and teach the Bible are teachers in progress. We all have ways we can get better.Recently I got to sit down with Mark Meynell who, in his role as director of Europe and the Caribbean for Langham Preaching, spends most of his time traveling to different parts of the world to help teachers and preachers get better at handing the Bible. According to Meynell, Bible teachers all over the world lament the same thing—a lack of time to do the kind of study they want to do on the text. His word to teachers is: "You make time for what you think is important.” Meynell says that the marks of really good Bible teaching include faithfulness to the set, relevance to the audience, and clarity in delivery. Our discussion included tips on how to discover the tics we all have as teachers that make it hard for our audience to listen to us, how to and how not to bring in passages outside of our main text into our talks, and the way in which John Stott modeled for him what it looks like to be a life-long learner.Meynell is the author of numerous books including What Angels Long to Read (Langham Preaching Resources, 2017), When Darkness Seems My Closest Friend (IVP, 2018) and his most recent, Colossians and Philemon for You (Good Book, 2018). He blogs at markmeynell.net.

Message preached at Grace Family Church, Caymanas Estate, Jamaica, by Mark Meynell, the Director of Langham Preaching for Europe and the Caribbean, on March 1, 2020.
In most nativity plays, Joseph is nothing more than a bit part player; the donkey often has the same number of lines. But this man changed the world. Listen as Lewis opens up Matthew one and shows us the shame Joseph bore for Mary, and the shame Jesus bore for us. In the message, Lewis refers to Mark Meynell’s outstanding book on the subject of depression, When Darkness seems my closest friend. You can by the book here.
Dmitri Shostakovich is arguably the greatest composer of the 20th century. There is not a musical form he couldn’t write for. But his brilliance made him an easy target in Stalin’s Soviet Union, especially when ruled by a dictator who fancied himself an aesthete. His lifelong battle was to preserve his artistic integrity at the same time as avoiding the gulag and execution. Amid intolerable suffering, he somehow composed some of the most powerful and sublime comforts for others who suffer.
Mark Meynell has done a lot of thinking about civility and cynicism and the writer's responsibility not just to win arguments, but to tell the truth. In this episode, Jonathan and Mark discuss the practice of generosity involved in both writing and reading, the virtues and vices of rhetoric, and how fiction and nonfiction persuade us in different ways. The Revd Mark Meynell is Europe and Caribbean Director for Langham Preaching, part of the Langham Partnership. For nine years, he was on the senior ministry team at All Souls Langham Place, in London. His latest book, published by IVP, is called When Darkness Seems My Closest Friend. It explores the shame, confusion, exhaustion, isolation and despair of living with depression, especially as a Christian minister. It seeks wisdom from the Bible – especially the Psalms, which he describes as his “oxygen tank” in darkest times – although it does not pretend to offer easy answers. Ed Thornton spoke to Mark Meynell about the book.
