While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there. A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.” (All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.) Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you. “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.

PCI's Urban Mission Network seeks to support and encourage those ministering in these areas. To explore this we hear from Felix Aremo (Training Manager, London City Mission), Rev Richard McIlhatton (Christchurch, Dundonald) and Jason Sime (Community Outreach Worker, Alexandra). The Years The Locusts Have EatenReader: Miriam MontgomeryDate: 9th June 2022Passage: Joel 2:25-------------------I once heard the story of a man who had been visited over the years by a missionary from the London City Mission. Every time the missionary urged the man to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ the man refused to listen. The man reached the great age of 100 years and on that birthday he yielded his life to the Lord Jesus. He said, "Isn't it wonderful that here I am at 100 years and I have accepted Christ?" Yes it was wonderful, but think of all the years and opportunities he had wasted, living without the Lord Jesus, living only for himself. That old man's story is not unique. Too often so many people hear the Gospel, are challenged by it, maybe become convicted of their sin and their need for salvation but let these opportunities pass them by and they remain unsaved. And so often when eventually they are converted they regret bitterly all the years when they resisted Christ - "years that the locusts have eaten". But God gives wonderful encouragement to someone like that. God says to them, as he did to Israel a long time ago, "I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten" - those wasted years. God will give such a person work to do no matter how long they have rejected God's grace, even if they are 100 years old! While many people come to God while they are still young, yet some of the finest Christians I know were converted later in life and lived for Jesus in such a useful way, making up for the years they had lost. PrayerDear Lord, help me not to waste time but to use my time for you. Amen.

We can sometimes make too much of the distinction between practical ministry and spiritual ministry, emphasising one at the cost of the other. But what is it about meeting physical needs (especially in a deprived urban environment) that lends credibility to our spiritual efforts in the area of evangelism? This time on PEP Talk, Andy and Kristi hear about how both are being put into action at Edinburgh City Mission. Our guest is the CEO of Edinburgh City Mission, Duncan Cuthill. He was converted at an Edinburgh mission event as a young person, later working for the Scottish Tourist Board and UCCF. He left Scotland in the mid-00s to study theology at Cornhill in London, subsequently working with London City Mission for twelve years. Duncan returned to Edinburgh to lead Edinburgh City Mission in 2017.Sign up for the Edinburgh City Mission "Restless for Mission" conference here.Support the show (https://www.solas-cpc.org/podcast-book-offer/)

The Years The Locusts Have Eaten Reader: Miriam Montgomery Date: 9th June 2020 Time: ------------------- I once heard the story of a man who had been visited over the years by a missionary from the London City Mission. ## Prayer Dear Lord, help me not to waste time but to use my time for you. Amen.

Colin Glen Christian Fellowship

Our good friend Ricky Fawcett (from when John and Elaine lived in London), a former missionary to the homeless and travellers in and around London, shares a little about his ministry before he retired, followed by a sermon on 1 Timothy 1:12-17: “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength to do his work. He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve him, even though I used to blaspheme the name of Christ. In my insolence, I persecuted his people. But God had mercy on me because I did it in ignorance and unbelief. Oh, how generous and gracious our Lord was! He filled me with the faith and love that come from Christ Jesus. This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life. All honor and glory to God forever and ever! He is the eternal King, the unseen one who never dies; he alone is God. Amen.” (1 Timothy 1:12–17, NLT) For more information visit the London City Mission website, or the homeless centre at Waterloo.
