At this week's Round Table, Emily, Hannah and Skyla spoke with Sasha Simon and Rhana Hashemi about harm-reduction based drug education. As the Founder and Principal Consultant at Sasha Simon Consulting, Sasha provides training, technical assistance and consulting services to youth-serving professionals transitioning away from punitive, abstinence-based drug education and policies and towards inclusive, restorative, and health-based structures that support the whole child and their community. Rhana is a Bay Area-based drug educator, a national expert in youth overdose prevention and harm reduction, and a doctoral student in Social Psychology at Stanford. She founded an educational organization called Know Drugs, which works to advance evidence-based prevention and harm reduction drug education for youth to prevent overdoses and risky drug use.  Sasha advocates extensively on issues related to teens and drug use, sexuality and health, adultism, and BIPOC mental health, building intergenerational coalitions and collaborative networks to empower youth as advocates to challenge political issues that directly impact them and to deliver innovative, cross-sector approaches to public health and education. Sasha also co-founded the Fierce Leadership for Youth Academy, a college prep non-profit aiming to remove financial barriers to higher learning for first-gen college students of color.  Rhana translates scientific research and uplifts community youth voices in the design and development of prevention messaging. She was a key contributor to Safety First, the nation's first harm reduction-based drug education curriculum, and has piloted the program across several Bay Area schools. Her work has been featured by major news outlets such as the NY Times, TIMES Magazine, and NBC's Today Show.  After learning about their fascinating backgrounds, we dug into how they've co-designed, piloted, and evaluated Safety First programs WITH teachers and students, which is super inspiring.  We also discussed recently updated drug education laws in Illinois and Texas, honing in on the policy changes since the fentanyl overdose crisis. Sasha and Rhana put forth a call to action based on everything that they've learned and experienced on how YOU can adopt harm reduction-based approaches to drug education in your community. Psychedelic drugs are once again being trialled to treat a range of psychological conditions. The writer Mike Pollan tells Kirsty Wark about the science of LSD and magic mushrooms: from the 1940s to the 1960s they promised to shed light not only on the deep mysteries of consciousness, but also to offer relief from addiction and mental illness. Banned since the 1970s, there is now a resurgence of research into these mind-altering substances. While some psychiatrists were getting their patients to experiment with psychedelics in the 1950s, far more were administering electroconvulsive therapy - both have a controversial history. ECT involves sending an electric current through the brain to trigger an epileptic seizure. It gained a reputation as a barbaric treatment, after the film One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. But the psychiatrist Dr Tammy Burmeister believes that it's time people understood the therapeutic potential from this procedure. The poet Andrew Motion's latest book Essex Clay is an attempt to return to heartfelt memories of childhood. He looks back at his mother's riding accident, which left her 'floating herself among the nebulae and gas clouds of her vast unconsciousness' and her subsequent slow death. The book revolves around loss and memory and retrieval. The evolution of the human brain is one of the wonders of nature, but the philosopher of science Peter Godfrey-Smith asks what if intelligent life on Earth evolved not once, but twice? He wonders how the octopus - a solitary creature - became so smart. He traces the story from single-celled organism 3.8 billion years ago to the development of cephalopod consciousness, casting new light on the octopus mind. Producer: Katy Hickman.

What a show on BEHIND THE LENS this week! Last week we started probing ALTERED MINDS with actress Jaime Ray Newman. This week, her co-star Joseph Lyle Taylor joins us to dig a little deeper into character and performance (as well as talk about the directorial style of Sidney Lumet, with whom he previously worked). And ALTERED MINDS writer/director Michael Z. Wechsler himself is on hand talking about structure and construct of this psychological thriller, not to mention creating blizzard conditions and snow in Philadelphia when there is none. In the last segment of the show, writer/director/editor Nathan Williams is live talking about his feature debut, IF THERE'S A HELL BELOW, fresh off its successful Slamdance premiere on Sunday. For those Slamdance attendees, take a listen to Nathan and then go see the encore showing of IF THERE'S A HELL BELOW on Wednesday. A riveting mystery with a noirish feel, Nathan goes into detail about his conceptualization and visual grammar infusing the film. Not often that BEHIND THE LENS has two directors on the same show, having films of similar genre with each showcasing different lensing and editing styles and film construct. Fascinating discussion to hear the different approaches and concerns of each. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

It's a devil of a good time on BEHIND THE LENS this week with writer/director Joe Pepitone and actress Jaime Ray Newman talking the hilarious comedy THE JERSEY DEVIL, and the compelling psychological thriller ALTERED MINDS, respectively! Fans of Jaime Ray Newman already know her from her extensive credits in film and tv, including "Red Widow", "Drop Dead Diva", "Mind Games", and, of course, "General Hospital". Knowing Jaime's work, you'll enjoy hearing about her latest film, ALTERED MINDS from writer/director Michael Wechsler, and working with co-stars Ryan O'Nan and Judd Hirsch. And for all you "General Hospital" fans out there, Jaime answers the burning question: Who's more terrifying? Judd Hirsch as Dr. Nathaniel Shellner in ALTERED MINDS or, Constance Towers as Helena Cassadine in GH? At the half way point of the show, you'll hear one of the most fun and most engaging guests we've ever had - writer/director Joe Pepitone - who regales us with stories about "the making of" THE JERSEY DEVIL. And Joe gets his own "burning" question to answer for you as to the inspiration for the film: Why would the Devil pick New Jersey for the new home of Hell? Plus, I'll talk about some of the Oscar nominations and you'll hear my exclusive Oscar morning phone call with Phyllis Nagy, nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for "Carol", as well as a snippet of my chat with Lon Bender, Oscar nominee for Best Sound Editing for his work on "The Revenant." http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
