The Artist Connection Podcast has been offering long form interviews with artists from the past, present, and future since 2011. Hear what inspires them to get out of bed each morning and practice the craft that they love. My guests include people that I truly respect from many different backgrounds…
Welcome to Episode 307 of The Artist Connection Podcast! My guest today is Courtney Moorehead Balaker! She is an award-winning filmmaker, producer, director, writer, and co-founder of Korchula Productions. Her latest project “Little Pink House” is available now for streaming, VOD, and DVD. It tells the true story of one woman’s struggle to save her home from corporate redevelopment in her area. She is up against Pfizer and the government in this emotional tale of the importance of fighting for what you love, even if the odds are against you. I watched the film and thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn’t know anything about the story going into it, but I was instantly hooked. Courtney and I talked a lot about the film, as well the impacts of Eminent Domain on small communities. We also talked about her experiences as a theatre director in New York City, life in Los Angeles, and her studies in Colorado and London. If you reach out to Courtney, please let her know that you heard her here first. Enjoy! Special Thanks: To my good friend Tim Binder from New Ocean Media. I appreciate his support, and making episodes like this possible. Looking forward to many more in the future! Hiyori from Hamburg, Germany. She is another good friend of mine, and a fantastic drummer. Her track “Funky Monkey” is the ACP theme song! At long last...The wait is over...Episode 305 of The Artist Connection Podcast is here! My guest today is musician Jason Klahr. We have been friends & brothers for 36 years and I am so excited to share his story with you. We start at the very beginning and discuss his earliest musical influences, his time in the US Navy, the places that he has called home, and his life in Hawaii. He is one of my favorite guitar players, and the first person to make music a tangible thing for me. Songs went from being something that only existed on vinyl and the radio to now coming alive through him and his Ibanez Roadstar. He has taught me so much over the years. The thumbnail pic for this episode is from one of our many jams way back in 1993. Those were great times! We talk often, and this interview gives you a glimpse into what those conversations sound like. I hope that you have as much fun with it as we did. I plan on having him back very soon to do a track by track of his latest album "God's Not Done Yet." If you reach out to Jason, please let him know that you heard his interview and music on my show. Enjoy! Special Thanks: Hiyori from Hamburg, Germany. She is a great friend of mine, and a fantastic drummer. Her track “Funky Monkey” is the ACP theme song! To all my listeners...Thank you for your continued support through the years! If you like what you hear, please tell a friend! Three of his tracks are featured throughout this episode. After you listen to the interview, be sure to pick up your own copy. I will provide links below. Eric has the distinction of being my first guest from the Star Wars universe! As a child actor, Eric was cast as Mace Towani in “Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure” & “Ewoks: The Battle for Endor.” He also appeared in “Less Than Zero” as Robert Downey Jr’s younger brother. It was cool to talk through those early roles with him. We also talked about growing up in Hollywood and his various experiences there. This conversation was a lot of fun. I hope to have him on again very soon. If you reach out to Eric, please let him know that you heard his interview and music on my show. Enjoy! Welcome to Episode 303 of The Artist Connection Podcast! My guest today is music legend Mark Slaughter! I have been a fan of his since the 80’s, so having the chance to speak with him was a real thrill for me. His new solo album “Halfway There” is available now. Three tracks from it are featured throughout this episode, along with a Van Halen cover that he recorded in 2007. After you listen to the interview, be sure to pick up your own copy of the album. I will provide links below. We also talked about his growing up in Las Vegas, the music business, and how important being a songwriter is to his life. For Mark, it all begins with the song. He shares some amazing advice during our conversation. I had so many things that I wanted to ask him about, and he was open to all of my questions. If you reach out to Mark, please let him know that you heard his interview and music on my show. Enjoy! Special Thanks: To my good friend, Tim Binder from New Ocean Media. Happy Independence Day to all of my fellow Americans celebrating on this beautiful 4th of July Weekend! I have a very special episode on deck today. The Artist Connection Podcast is back and bigger than ever! Today’s guest is musician Jim McCarty. He is best known as the drummer for The Yardbirds, but there is so much more to the story. We talked about his early double life as a London Stockbroker by day and drumming Mod by night, and his family’s reaction to his career in the music business. He shared stories about his life post-Yardbirds, and how it all came back around for him. Jim also has amazing solo albums available. I sprinkled in songs throughout the episode that fit in nicely with the conversation and really set the mood for the topics that we covered. I don’t throw around the word “legend” a lot, but Jim has certainly earned this distinction. It was an honor to speak with him. His music spans the decades, and his influence can be felt in many ways. Musicians like Jim set the tone early on, and many of us are still trying to catch up. Learn more about him at www.jamesmccarty.com and www.theyardbirds.com. If you reach out, please let Jim know that you heard him on my show. I hope that you enjoy this episode as much as I did! Today’s returning guest is a musician, podcaster, author, and world traveler. George Hrab does it all! He was one of my first guests back in 2011 and his podcast was a major inspiration behind my desire to start this show. He gave me advice in those early days that has stayed with me through the years. I was so happy that he took time out of his busy schedule to stop over and catch up. George shared some highlights of 2016, why he chose to plant roots in Bethlehem PA, and his thoughts on social media. You will find some fantastic music sprinkled throughout our chat. He gave me complete access to his catalog and allowed me to pick some favorites to share with you today. I selected songs from each of his six studio recordings, and you will get the added bonus of hearing the story behind the tracks. He may be influenced by Frank Zappa, Yes, King Crimson, and Talking Heads…but what comes through his work is a style that is unique and all his own. Learn more at www.georgehrab.com and be sure to pick up your copies of his solo work at www.cdbaby.com/Artist/GeorgeHrab. I am very excited to share this episode with you! Today’s guest is musician Chris Butler. Even though this is his first appearance, he plays a big part in the history of the show. As I planned out the podcast back in 2011, Chris was on my original list of people that I wanted to speak with. I am thrilled that I now have the opportunity to feature this talented artist and share his story and music with you. I first learned about Chris back in 1982. He was the founder/guitarist/songwriter of The Waitresses. I have been a fan ever since, and it is where I start the interview. Chris told me about his early days in Ohio, what the music scene was like, his early bands, moving to NYC, and how The Waitresses got their start. The second part of our conversation focuses on the historic recording techniques that Chris has experimented with, and tasting success in Europe with Kilopop! Music from various eras of his career are mixed in throughout the conversation. We wrap things up in the final segment by talking about his childhood and the vibrant music scene that he was a part of during his college life in Kent, Ohio. Chris was in the crowd of students at Kent State University on May 4th 1970 when the National Guard opened fire on them, killing four of his friends and peers. Chris gave me the details of the events leading up to that fateful day, and how it felt to be there as it was happening. Needless to say, it had a profound impact on the rest of his life. This was a dramatic and emotional part of our conversation, and I am honored that he shared it with me. This lead into a conversation about the current state of affairs in American politics. We spoke for close to three hours that night, but there is so much more that I would like to discuss with him. Hopefully I can have him on again to continue the story. Learn more at www.futurefossilmusic.com and be sure to pick up your copies of his solo work at https://chrisbutler1.bandcamp.com/. Today’s guest is Joie Calio! This episode explores the many sides of this cool musician through music and conversation. I am a huge fan of his band “7Horse”, and meeting him to talk through his life and musical career was a great experience for me. He shared stories about growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, when music first took hold of him, and his many adventures in the 90's and beyond. Joie has been a working musician his whole life, and you can still hear the excitement in his voice when he talks about getting signed for the first time with his band Dada and what life on the road is like. He lives for this stuff. The new 7Horse album “Livin in a Bitch of a World” is out now. After you listen to this episode, be sure to pick up a copy and check out his other albums. He allowed me to play some of my favorite tracks from Dada, his solo work, and 7Horse to compliment the interview and give some added perspective to our chat. Learn more at www.7horsemusic.com. If you reach out to Joie, please let him know that you heard him on The Artist Connection Podcast. Enjoy! We do not own any copyrights to the songs played on this episode. Today’s guest is Actor/Rocker/Renaissance Man Michael Des Barres! This episode gave me the opportunity to explore the many sides of this legendary performer through music and conversation. I have been a fan of his for as long as I can remember, and meeting him was an absolute thrill! He doesn’t normally talk about the past in great detail, but he gave me a glimpse during our hour together because he knew how much it meant to me. He has contributed so much to the pop culture landscape and I wanted to hear about the experiences that got him to where he is today. He opened up his musical vaults and allowed me to play some of my favorite tracks to compliment the interview and give some added perspective to the topics that we were discussing. Be sure to check out “The Michael Des Barres Program” on SiriusXM Radio as part of “Little Steven’s Underground Garage.” He is also very active on social media, so please look for him at his website (http://michaeldesbarres.com/) Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MDesBarres/), Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/mdesbarres/), Twitter (https://twitter.com/MDesbarres?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor), and all points in between. The Artist Connection Podcast is back! My good friend Jade Starling returns to the show to break my summer long hiatus, and it was great to speak with her again. She has a brand new single out now on Tazmania Records. Jade joined Mike Ferullo on "Party 2 Life." Two versions of this high energy track are featured here. I love it, and I know you will, too. Jade and I covered some heavy topics in this interview. We talked through some recent events that are happening in the world which haven't been so bright. I appreciate her for being so open with her opinions, and for always being so positive with her music. It's artists like Jade that give you hope when things seem darkest. Today's guest is my good friend LAW! He's been featured here many times and we always have a lot to talk about. It's been about six months since we last spoke, and we lost many musical greats in that time. We paid tribute to many of them during our conversation, but our primary focus was on Prince. His music meant so much to both of us and it was nice to share our memories and favorite musical moments. LAW has such respect for the people that came before him and influenced what he is doing today. We also talked about David Bowie, LAW's upcoming shows in NYC, and setting the record straight on the cultural impact of "Uptown Funk." Follow LAW on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Introducing UK singer/songwriter Emily Capell! This episode mixes music and my conversation with this dynamic performer. Her songs are catchy but also make you think. These are the same qualities that attracted me to The Clash in the early 80's. Through Emily, I learned about Winston Silcott and Smiley Culture. These may not be household names in the States, but they are very significant in England. Five of Emily's songs are featured with this episode, as well as the story behind each. We also covered Northern Soul, Frank Sinatra, the East Coast/West Coast Rap feuds of the 90's, and all points in between. Her knowledge of music and music history blew me away. I have many more topics to cover with her, so hopefully this episode will serve as an introduction with many more appearances in the future. We covered topics as varied as social media, life in the Big Apple, technology, and various social issues. The thing that linked everything together is music. Even though we just met, it was if I'd known Angela for years. Her single is called "Be Okay" and it is featured with this episode. After you hear it, I know you will want your own copy. His musical mission is to “Spread the Aloha lifestyle, the positive vibes that heal” and he more than accomplishes that goal! Three of his songs are featured here to give you an idea of what this means. It was so cool to speak with him about his life, experiences, influences, and the importance of having the confidence to get on stage and perform. Since that time, he has been through some life changing experiences and has grown as a man and an artist. The good news is he is back with a brand new single and a new outlook on his future. J's music has always been positive but he went through some things that put his attitude to the test. He came out on the other side and is ready to impress us all over again. NYC based singer/songwriter Brian Mackey joined me on the show for a fantastic conversation about his life and music. His various influences come through in his songs, and his writing style is very autobiographical. You can tell that he has lived every note. He is a classically trained pianist and was inspired by Bob Dylan & Jim Croce as much as Mozart & Beethoven. Brian brings it all together and has an amazing story to tell. His latest record is called "Broken Heartstrings." Two songs from that album are featured here, as well as one from his "Honest Love" EP. Be sure to check out the other songs that he has available. Today's guest is Michael Wechsler! He is the Writer/Director/Producer of "Altered Minds" which is out now on VOD. It is a psychological thriller about a tormented son who makes a desperate bid to save his sanity by unearthing family secrets before his father dies. It stars Judd Hirsch, Ryan O'Nan, Jaime Ray Newman, C.S. Lee, Joseph Lyle Taylor, and Caroline Lagerfelt. We talked about how this amazing cast came together and the locations that were used during filming. I love movies like this. Today's guest is UK musician Russell Sinclair! I recently called over to Plymouth to speak with him about his brand new debut album "Bought & Sold." My guest today is Judy Chaikin! She is the Writer/Producer/Director of "The Girls in the Band." It is out now on DVD and VOD. I LOVED this movie. It was so exciting to have been given the opportunity to speak with Judy about it and feature her story of how the project came together. It is a documentary that details the journey of female jazz musicians from the 1930's through today. I am a huge fan of music, and thought I knew most of the highlights of 20th century musical history. I was wrong. This was an entire branch of the musical family tree that I was not aware of. The ladies featured here had to endure a career full of racism, sexism, and segregation...all while being world class musicians and entertainers. Their story may have been completely forgotten if not for the efforts of Judy and other likeminded film makers. We learn more about the past through interviews with the musicians, and a something about ourselves when we see the effect that prejudices and certain laws can have on people. To call it "compelling" isn't enough. It held me from start to finish and left me with the desire to learn more. One of the bands that Judy featured was "The International Sweethearts of Rhythm." I tracked down a few of their recordings and have included them with this episode. Learn more and buy your own copy of the movie at www.thegirlsintheband.com, and learn more about Judy at www.onestepproductions.com. My guest today is musician Luke Wade! Many of you know him from Season 7 of "The Voice." One of his performances caused Adam Levine to stand on his chair! He currently has a PledgeMusic Campaign which allows you to contribute towards the creation of the album. Learn more at http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/lukewade and visit him at his website www.lukewademusic.com. I recently called over to the UK to speak with singer Lydia Chase! Her debut single is called "Ultimate Drive", and it's available now. I found it online a few weeks ago and loved it immediately. Lydia told me the story and motivation behind it, and gave me a sneak peek at the title of her next single. She has been paying her dues by singing cover songs for the last 11 years, and recently decided to share her original music with the world. Lydia is off to a strong start with "Ultimate Drive." It is the kind of track that has something for everyone. I have it featured here along with her acoustic cover of "Locked Out of Heaven." You are going to love her voice! Today's featured guest is music legend Bernie Worrell! The interview is not new, as I featured it in Episode 023. That was four years ago in October of 2011. My show was very new, and it was pretty basic. There was no music, no intros & outros, and no editing at all. The format was strictly the conversation that I recorded with my guest. I have been a fan of Bernie Worrell since I was young. The fact that he agreed to be on my show so early in its run blew me away. We spent an afternoon together at a very busy diner in New Jersey. Needless to say, there was a ton of background noise on that recording. I posted it as is, and have always regretted that. The recording that I shared that day did not match the magic that I felt while I was there with Bernie. I am here today to make it right. I cleaned up the original audio, boosted the levels, and added some classic songs to complement the interview. Think of this as an "Episode 023 Remix." I couldn't knock out all of the background noise, but I believe it is worlds apart from the original. Learn more about Bernie at www.bernieworrell.com, and look for his albums at Amazon. Please reach out and let me know what you think of the interview. Enjoy! My guest today is singer/songwriter Donica Knight! She recently called me from her home in Alabama to talk about her life, influences, and brand new single called "Love ain't a Prize". It is a great song and is featured with this episode! You can buy it now at www.donicaknight.com. Look for it on Amazon, iTunes, and several other outlets around the world on November 1st, 2015. Donica spends time between Alabama and Los Angeles and had some great things to say about the differences between the two places. This interview was a lot of fun. She had me laughing through most of it! She spends a lot of time on the road and has opened for some of the biggest names in music. Her EP "Can't Buy a Southern Girl" is scheduled to be released in January of 2016. I hope to have her back on soon after so she can tell me all about it. His latest album is "Sugar & Cream", and three tracks are featured with this episode. Billy grew up in Australia and moved to Canada as a teenager. We talked about how he dealt with that transition and the differences between the two places. He also told me about his musical roots in the church choir. It is a tradition that he still practices today. Learn more about Billy at www.billygrima.com. I hope to have him on again very soon. My guest today is musician Pete Thompson! He is the singer & guitarist for the UK band "The Magic Es". They just released a brand new single called "Melody Jane". It is the first of many great tracks of theirs that are coming our way over the next few months, and it is featured here today! This band delivers guitar driven pop and their influences are based on The Who, The Undertones, and The Jam to name just a few. I love this first track and can't wait to hear what's next. In addition to the band, Pete also runs "Oh Mercy! Records". He has some great artists on the label. We also talked about life in the UK and the state of the music business. Learn more at www.wearemagic.uk and their Facebook page. You can also follow the band on Twitter, and download your own copy of Melody Jane at Bandcamp. This is definitely a band to watch, and I am honored to be among the first to share them with you. If you reach out to Pete, please let him know that you heard him here. Enjoy! My guest today is Steve Butler! He is the guitarist/vocalist for the band Smash Palace. They just released their 11th album called "Some Kind of Magic". It was released by Zip Records and includes four fantastic tracks. The first single, "Haddontown", is featured here. It was great to speak with Steve about his influences, the history of the band, working with his brother Brian, and some upcoming dates. He has been in the music business for over 35 years and has had his shares of ups and downs. Not one to dwell on the past, Steve shares those highs and lows with me with one eye on the future. He was in the studio the day we spoke, and I can't wait to hear what he has in store for us. I have been a fan of Smash Palace since the mid 80's and it was cool to meet with Steve and learn so much about his musical history. Learn more at www.smashpalacemusic.com, Twitter, and Facebook. My guest today is Christine Weatherup! She was born and raised in Los Angeles and has been acting professionally since she was a teenager. She joined me to talk about her starring role in the indie anti-romantic comedy "Bread and Butter". Christine's character is Amelia Karinksy. She's a 30 year old obsessed with her virginity and is struggling to navigate relationships with two men that fell for her at the same time. Christine brings equal measures of sweet, awkward, and laugh out loud funny to this part. I love this movie. The writing is smart and you can tell that the cast really clicked. It was written and directed by Liz Manashil. She did an amazing job with it! Experience it for yourself at Amazon, iTunes, and VOD. Learn more at www.breadandbuttermovie.com. My guest today is Madellaine Paxson! She is making her directorial debut with the movie Blood Punch. It is available now on VOD, DVD, and iTunes. It has won several awards on the festival circuit, and I highly recommend it. The story grabbed me in the first two minutes, and did not let go until the end credits. Madellaine told me how she and the cast worked together on the 17th season of Power Rangers RPM, and her work as a writer at Walt Disney TV Animation. Blood Punch is quite the departure from that side of her career, and it was very interesting to learn about what inspired her to create it. Learn more at www.bloodpunchmovie.com. Van Wild is the name of her Southern Blues-Pop solo project, and she was nice enough to allow me to include three tracks with this episode. I love her voice and the way she brings the songs to life with her delivery. Yasmine is very passionate about many things that impact the environment and society.
