Halloween season 2024 on Tread Perilously is a celebration of witches, and the magical mischief begins with an episode of Bewitched called "To Trick-or-Treat or Not to Trick-or-Treat." When Endora discovers Sam is participating in a Trick-of-Treat For Unicef event that props up stereotypes about witches, the resulting fight with Darren leads her to transform him into the very tropes she despises. Will he be able to pitch a new presentation to an important client while looking more like Tommy Wiseau? Will Larry Tate finally learn the truth about Sam? And will Tabitha ever notice the family discord around her while getting ready to go trick-or-treating as a princess? Erik's appreciation of Endora finds a new dimension. A definitive answer to the Dick York/Dick Sargent debate is reached. An underlying theme of Bewitched is explored, even if the show cannot really dive into it. Justin deploys the best ad men at Sterling Cooper Price. He also has some notes for Tabitha actor Erin Murphy. Erik guesses Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF must've been fairly new when the episode aired. Dr. Leonard H. McCoy once again returns to The Alternative Factor. The pair try to explain the phenomenon that was Tiny Tim and the mystery of George Plimpton is solved.
The Alternative Factor (Star Trek: The Original Series, S1 E20) was recommended by Kaleb, he/him, who said: Listen….listen I'm aware this episode is definitely a strangely paced, scatterbrained mess. Though I'll say it's worst and best sin of it is Lazarus's facial hair; really Lazarus as a whole sums up my feelings about this episode: meandering, accidentally comical, and strangely poignant. The first five minutes I'm always waiting in suspense for the appearance of Lazarus's awful beard and over-the-top scream as he falls down, because I can't help but laugh every time. And while there are certain parts that are very confusing the first time watching, as well as several bits that drag on too long, there's also a lot of fun lines and good performances to keep me enjoying myself. This episode also has one of my favorite one-off crewmembers of the whole show, Lieutenant Charline Masters, who I find really charming and professional when she's on-screen. Plus I love Lazarus's sparkly little outfit. It's an episode of big swings- trying to deal with total nonexistence should the Enterprise fail, time travel, alternate universes, and pulling a bait and switch over which Lazarus poses the real threat- and I'm sure there were cleaner ways to pull it off, but I do know that in the end, after Lazarus stays to fight the other him for eternity in between universes, I really feel the heaviness behinds Kirk's, “For you and me…but what of Lazarus? What of Lazarus…”I find it a really compelling episode, though I can definitely see why it's disliked by a lot of people, especially if they only watch it the one time. That's the thought that stands out to me the most: I like and appreciate this episode more and more with each rewatch, which I think it deserves credit for, even if it'll never be my Top Episode of All Time.Greg's Charity Stream: https://tilt.fyi/cfN1BNS95SThe Alternative Factor first aired on March 30, 1967, written by Don Ingalls, and directed by Gerd OswaldThe Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

When the Enterprise intercepts a stolen space cruiser, it beams aboard a group of rebellious space hippies that are searching for the mythical planet of Eden. What starts off as merely an annoyance to Captain Kirk turns downright dangerous when the hippies – led by the insane Dr. Sevrin – attempt to take over the Enterprise at all costs in an effort to fulfill their journey. Over the decades, “The Way to Eden” has become something of a veritable punching bag for “Star Trek” fans. And for many reasons (especially Spock's jam session), it's an easy one to punch. But credit must be given to “The Way to Eden” for taking a big swing and committing to its intentions, and it's not nearly as bad as, say, “And the Children Shall Lead” or “The Alternative Factor.” Back in 1969, it was “real now,” and it still is – so don't be a Herbert, and take it for the silly fun that it is. In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode The Alternative Factor which aired on March 23, 1967, Star Date 3087.6. As the Enterprise maps a planet with iron-silicon surface and oxygen-hydrogen atmosphere and begins heading towards Starbase 200, the ship is twice subjected to massive disturbances. Spock reports that the magnetic field of the surrounding space "blinked" and the gravity of the planet momentarily reached zero. Spock then finds a human life form on the planet's surface and Spock, Kirk, and a security detail of 3 beam down to investigate. They find a spaceship and a bearded man who yells something about having time to still stop "him," then jumps or falls off a cliff. Kirk discovers that the blinking phenomenon drained the Enterprise's dilithium crystals, leaving only 10 hours before the orbit decays. Starfleet command reports that every quadrant of the galaxy has been subjected to magnetic, gravimetric, and electric disruption, and Kirk and Starfleet fear it may be a prelude to an invasion. Kirk interviews the fallen man, who claims he is chasing a murderer who destroyed his entire civilization. He himself was saved because he was inspecting magnetic communication satellites. He attempts to enlist Kirk in his fanatic pursuit. It turns out that the strange phenomena are caused as the man, whose name is Lazarus. Compliance Takeaways: 1. This week, we go behind the scenes of an episode many consider to be one of the worst in all of Star Trek: It's The Alternative Factor. But could it be there were real reasons why this episode ended up…well…the way it did? Author Marc Cushman wrote a series of books called “These Are The Voyages.” They are an in-depth look at the production of each of the 79 original episodes. So when we thought we would do a show about one of the worst episodes of Star Trek ever, we broke out March Cushman's books. But what Cushman describes shocked us. The Alternative Factor IS a bad episode, but there are several contributing factors that happened behind the scenes that contributed to this particular show turning out the way it did. The first is that the original script included a love interest for the guest character, Lazarus. The love story made Lazarus a much more believable and relatable character. The only problem here was that the love interest was to be played by a black actress. When NBC caught wind of this, they put a stop to it. This lead to the love scenes being deleted from the script at the last minute. It left a hole in the character of Lazarus, and also a hole in the content of the script. It didn't fill the needed 51 minutes of time. The result is a character that seems superficial and unrelatable and the episode ends up filling time with shots that don't really move the story forward. In the end, the late changes effectively made this story into one that was no longer worth producing. As March Cushman suggests, they should have scrapped it all together. *** In The Unofficial Trek Podcast, hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto give their "Unofficial" take on the Star Trek universe. From 2019 through 2019, Bob and Kelly hosted the show 70s Trek. It was a look at the events that brought a cancelled, 1960s TV show back from the dead to become a blockbuster movie in 1979. It was a decade that created a multi-million dollar franchise. Now Bob and Kelly will look at the minutia, the concepts, the people and the news pertaining to the Star Trek Universe. It's a fascinating time for Star Trek, with a flood of content about it on the internet. Bob and Kelly will give their "Unofficial" take. Why unofficial? Because their views are just that, they are theirs and are, therefore, "unofficial." It's a fresh look at Star Trek from two lifelong fans who have been talking Trek for over 35 years! Tread Perilously's Total Request Live 5 concludes with an episode of Farscape called "Throne for a Loss." When Rygel negotiates to haul cargo for the Tavleks, he ends up kidnapped by them. Crichton and the rest of the Moya crew are expected to pay up his ransom. Instead, Aeryn embarks on a rescue plan which evolves once Crichton wakes up from his Aeryn-induced stupor. Additional support also comes from D'Argo. Meanwhile, Zhaan tries to convince one of the Tavlek conscripts that he doesn't need the narcotic delivered via his standard issue gauntlet and Rigel almost makes a friend of Jotheb, next in line to lead the Consortium of Trao. Will the techno-squid save the day? Erik can't help but draw lines between Farscape and Guardians of the Galaxy. But the lines go into the past and the future. Justin remembers a lot about Farscape for only watching it once all the way through. The series gets praise for good character hooks and a couple of really swell ideas. Justin enumerates the three classic intergalactic blunders. Gerd Shockley teases upcoming Alternative Factor guests. Spacing Guild Navigator Edric turns out to be popular. Erik learns the Peacekeepers are bad and The Book of Boba Fett chat continues.
Tread Perilously launches into a vampire-infused Horror Month called "Creatures of the Night" with its first ever episode of What We Do in the Shadows -- the low-rated "Ghosts." When Lazlo discovers symmetrical book-stacking of his sacred writings, Nadja declares a ghost is present. She organizes a seance only to discover the ghost is the latest incarnation of her often-reincarnated lover. The discovery of a true ghost leads the others to question if they themselves have ghosts since they are technically dead. A second seance provides the answer and a launchpad for comedy as the housemates discover their own disembodied souls. Erik braves the first of four vampire weeks despite his well-known dislike of the character type (Aro notwithstanding). A new theory about Parks and Recreation emerges. Justin comes through with all the key factoids about What We Do In The Shadows and vampire fiction. Erik reveals some of his controversial opinions. An Alternative Factor moment conjures up memories of Bane and a reason for his disappearance. The new Babylon 5 gets briefly discussed. Erik does find things to like, though, and the vampire roots of Tommy Wiseau come back into play.
Tread Perilously's month of Star Trek continues with the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode called "Man of the People." The Enterprise gets involved in a diplomatic mission when the ship carrying Ambassador Alkar gets attacked. Now aboard the Federation flagship, he immediately attracts the attention of Counselor Troi. But Alkar's mother warns her off, saying she'll regret any association with him. Soon, the mother turns up dead and Alkar bonds with Troi during a supposed funerary right. But is it more than he says? Does it have anything to do with Troi's rapid aging and unusual behavior? And once Picard gets involved, will he be swayed to Alkar's grim calculus? The Alternative Factor gets a new host despite a very similar voice to the previous one. Geography Corner takes on a surprising form as Erik and Justin discuss the places where 1980s TV directors could have bought houses. The presence of Ensign Janeway leads to an understandable tangent. The pair also diagnose a worthy Star Trek question buried in the failings of "Man of the People." Justin questions the value of freelance diplomats. Erik creates a post-realization to explain why the Enterprise isn't a purely exploratory vessel. Riker turns out to be the episode MVP and Justin inadvertently creates the Mansplaining Ghost.
TOS called "The Alternative Factor." During a routine patrol, the Enterprise encounters a "blink" in space localized to the planet it currently orbits. Unimpressed with Spock's assessment of the situation, Kirk beams down to the planet. There, he encounters Lazarus, a self-professed time traveler locked in battle with an invisible enemy. But when that foe turns out to be Lazarus from another universe, Kirk must way the alternatives and chose which Lazarus to believe. Erik and Justin fail to hide their disappointment in what may be the most mediocre episode of TOS. But they use the episode title and the name of its director to create the Federation's #1 subspace chat show -- "The Alternative Factor." Captain Kirk turns out to support chicken independence. Lt. Charlene Masters and guest actor Janet MacLachlan easily earn episode MVP. The distinction between He Who Remains and Kang is emphasized. DeForest Kelley gets praise even as Dr. McCoy gets worse. The bad wrestling and psychedelic imagery get called out. The look of dilithium crystals gets described and Erik suggests Lee Majors as Kirk.

After a cataclysmic disturbance threatens the foundation of civilization, Captain Kirk comes face-to-face with the culprit -- a maniacal lunatic named Lazarus, who will stop at nothing to destroy a duplicate version of himself who exists in a parallel universe. With the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance, Kirk and Spock must figure out a way to stop the matter and anti-matter versions of Lazarus from coming together, or they will wipe out everything in existence. After producing 20 prior episodes of groundbreaking television, it was only a matter of time until "Star Trek" came up short with a colossal failure. It was an ambitious and promising concept, but the resulting episode was convoluted, confusing and boring -- and it made absolutely no sense whatsoever. It was a troubled production for sure, no doubt hampered by the casting of Robert Brown, who was called in at the 11th hour to replace the episode's original guest star. But true to form for "Star Trek," "The Alternative Factor" does have its merits, and our fascinating and revealing deep dive conversation sure makes for an amazing episode of "Enterprise Incidents!" The Alternative Factor Hello and welcome to our latest episode. This time is actually an old one. You might remember waaaaay, back in 2019, the beforetimes, Rick did a couple of episodes as a test bed for an idea. Basically he'd have one guest and they'd try to find the good in an episode generally considered not so great. One of these he recorded with the lovely Johnny Staggs where they talked about The Alternative Factor. But... then he lost it! Yeah... the idiot! However, it's turned up from the electronic wilderness and here it is, a bit under 2 years late! Hope you enjoy!

Deemed one of the worst episodes of star trek ever. Come join us in our stuggle to review this episode. May it be a deciding factor for you in weather or not you dare to watch this episode.
The Alternative Factor was the twenty-seventh episode of Star Trek's debut season to air, with a mysterious stranger locked in a struggle against his inverse self. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss a quite magnificent beard. After a massive and unprecedented phenomenon puts the rest of Starfleet into retreat, the Enterprise is left to investigate what is feared to be an invasion. At the focal point they discover a man named Lazarus (Robert Brown) on a mission to destroy his sworn enemy. When the ship's dilithium crystals are stolen, Kirk pursues Lazarus to the planet below, looking to find answers to both the crystal theft and the apparent tear in the fabric of their universe. The Alternative Factor was directed by Gerd Oswald, the second of his two Star Trek episodes. The writer was Don Ingalls, the first of two stories he contributed to the show. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered whether they could get their alternate universe selves to sit through this episode for them. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. This week's episode is The Alternative Factor and Matt doesn't like this one at all. We discuss how a love story might not only have led to TV's first interracial kiss (this WOULD come later) but how this episode would have been better with any B Story. We discuss how this episode almost had Drew Barrymore's father, John, who later would be fined for not appearing. We discuss Lt. Leslie and how he must be the most cross trained guy on the ship. Plus pardon us as we laugh a little too much about this episodes use of dilithium crystals.Plus, lots of things are pinned to the writer's wall to never to be discussed by the again. This and much much more!
