The Squire of Gothos (Trek: TOS) vs. The Tree of Light (Wars: Ewoks) We start off with bread talk (specifically, The Force Awakens). Aspen fights her nap brain and debates on if the word "foppish" is offensive. We also ponder on if Star Wars is more omnipresent in culture, debate the merits of movies vs. TV, and Aspen stans for deserts.Aspen also talks about the connecting themes of strength and power without purpose, along with how those who exert power over others pointlessly are viewed as children.————Support us on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/trekwarspodSocial Media:https://www.twitter.com/trekwarspodhttps://www.instagram.com/trekwarspodWant to ask us questions? In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode The Squire of Gothos, aired on January 12, 1967, Star Date 2124.5. The Enterprise encounters a rogue planet previously hidden from their sensors. As Sulu attempts to enter a course around the planet, he suddenly vanishes from the bridge, and Kirk vanishes a moment later. The Enterprise then receives a strange message on a viewscreen in blackletter writing: "Greetings and Felicitations!" followed by "Hip hip hoorah. Tallyho!" Spock orders Chief Medical Officer Dr. McCoy, along with Lt. DeSalle and geophysicist Karl Jaeger, to form a landing party and conduct a search. The landing party beams down and unexpectedly finds itself in a lush and breathable environment, a medieval castle. They find Captain Kirk and Lt. Sulu immobilized and a humanoid who identifies as "General Trelane, retired. Trelane suggests that Kirk be prey for a royal hunt, and Kirk agrees in return for the release of his ship. Two beings appear and call out to Trelane, ordering him to "come along" and lecturing him for his misbehavior. He then disappears, and the two beings follow after apologizing to Kirk, who returns to the ship. Compliance Takeaways: What to make when basic science is so wrong (Alternative facts?) But this episode is not about mutually assured destruction, per se. If I'm missing any other Star Trek episodes that tackle the subject, let me know! It's "The Man in the High Castle," not "Man in the High Tower," and it is indeed based on the novel of the same name, written by Philip K. Dick.Slaid is entirely correct about Star Trek's Nielson ratings in the 60's. When Star Trek aired on NBC, its ratings were low, and the network cancelled it in its third season. It's useful to keep in mind, however, that at the time the vast majority of TV viewers were watching only three broadcast networks: ABC, CBS, or NBC. So even a show with "low ratings" in the 60's would have commanded a much larger audience than a show with "low ratings" today. So it's kind of hard to make comparisons today. But its true that Star Trek didn't really become the hit show that it is today with its cult following and influence on popular culture until the 70's, when it was in syndication. Is Q, and the coinciding Q Continuum, immortal? The much loved character Q, from Star Trek: Next Generation is an omnipotent being with the ability to control time and space at will. Q is part of a collective, the Q Continuum, which exists in another dimension not accessible or understandable to humans. Q is not a benevolent being. He is better described as bored than benevolent. Although he has a fascination with Picard and with humanity and its historical outcomes, he is at times antagonistic and arbitrarily cruel. Trelane, the antagonist of this episode, "The Squire of Gothos," is a precursor to Q. The question of whether or not Q can decline or die has been recently raised as a possible plot line in the newest season of Star Trek: Picard, currently airing on Paramount Plus.

We're kicking off our Q series with a bit of a controversial choice- an Original Series episode that in retrospect may be the first appearance of the Continuum. That's right, we're covering "The Squire of Gothos".
While speeding through a star desert roughly 900 light years from Earth, the Enterprise encounters a rogue planet whose sole inhabitant -- an extremely powerful and rather jovial alien being named Trelane -- holds Captain Kirk and his crew captive while treating them as playthings for his amusement. When Kirk engages Trelane in a battle of wits in an effort to free the Enterprise, they play a high-stakes version of the most dangerous game -- the outcome of which will reveal the true identity of their mysterious captor. "The Squire of Gothos" is a fun, lighthearted and very entertaining episode, but it's also a subtle anti-war statement that holds a mirror up to the more violent and aggressive side of human behavior. But when it comes down to it, there's one reason why "The Squire of Gothos" works as well as it does, and that reason is William Campbell. He was clearly having a ball with his playful performance as the mischievous Trelane, and his chemistry with William Shatner was fantastic -- both of which make Campbell one of the finest guest stars to ever grace the soundstages of "Star Trek." (The Squire of Gothos, TOS, S01 E18) As the Enterprise crew is held hostage by a child-god Francophile, Clint and Emily discuss the meritts of murder. Meanwhile, Cory is frustrated by the lack of trivia questions in this episode.
The Squire of Gothos was the seventeenth episode of Star Trek's debut season to air, with an impetuous adversary testing Kirk's skills to the limit. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss planets that chase you, however hard you try to escape. On their way to deliver vital supplies to a colony, the Enterprise and her crew are waylaid by an impossible planet, previously uncharted. When Kirk and Sulu are kidnapped by Trelane (William Campbell), the enigmatic Squire of Gothos, Spock must lead a rescue mission. Spock's landing party includes crew members Jaeger (Richard Carlyle) and Lasalle (Michael Barrier), whose European ancestry is of particular interest to their temporary host until his 'parents' (Barbara Babcock and Bart La Rue) appear. The Squire of Gothos was directed by Don McDougall, his only Star Trek episode. The writer was Paul Schneider, who also penned Balance of Terror. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered the consequences of getting entangled with more powerful life forms, however irritating they may be. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. The Squire of Gothos was released in 1967. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on CBS All Access in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.

It's always the bad episodes of the series that give us the best episode of the podcast! This week we pick apart Catspaw. This week we try and figure out what Colob and Sylvia are doing here. and spend too much time on it. We reference Squire of Gothos numerous times, Matt launches into his theory on mists, again, and we discuss ow strange it is that the command team of the Enterprise are always the one beaming down to the planet. We ask why they are even there, why is Sylvia at first nice as a cat and then crappy as a human and why'd we start with all of this Halloween stuff in the first place? All this plus our usual recap and review and fun theme song.
This week, The Squire of Gothos. This week Ken and Matt riff about what product placement on Star Trek would look like, we debate the question as to whether this Squire is a Q, we discuss the use of the prefix Space in front of something as opposed to Star (As in Space Fleet or Star Fleet,) who is charge of this away team, and does Q even know what temperture is? This and so much more!
