But danger was never far behind – from the Chinatown gangs he ran with in New York, to his years in Iraq dodging bullets and defusing bombs. Nguyen learnt how to survive. By all means necessary. Now he's a high-end thief in Los Angeles. One of the best, but smart enough to know he's living on borrowed time. Then a job goes sideways, leaving bodies on the Hollywood Freeway, stolen diamonds in his pocket, and a target on his back.Which gets the attention of Thomas Monroe, an LAPD lieutenant who's been hunting Nguyen for years. Captain Ahab with a gun and badge, plus his own dirty secrets closing in on him fast. The two of them are set on a collision course – a thief who won't be caught and the cop who doesn't miss. Not exactly the quiet life Nguyen is after, especially now he's met a mysterious woman who's landed in town. They fall for each other hard. A gallerist living in France who used to be with the FBI's Art Crime Team. Able to spot forgeries a mile off, but she hasn't figured him out yet.So once he wraps up this business with the diamonds, Nguyen is done with the game. We opened the episode with a continuation of our Villains Month coverage, diving into the more nuanced territory of morally gray characters. In this third week, we shifted from examining outright villains to exploring the blurred lines between villains and antiheroes. While often confusing, this distinction can help deepen our understanding of literary characters and narrative structure. We discussed how selfish motives and chaotic actions typically define villains, whereas antiheroes may lack traditional heroic qualities but are still driven by noble or relatable goals. What Is On Our NightstandsBefore diving into the main theme, we shared what's currently on our nightstands. Arthur has just finished Transmentation | Transcience by Darkly Lem, a multi-universe sci-fi thriller recently released by Blackstone Publishing. He's moving on to Rhino: The Rise of a Warrior by Nicholas Sainsbury Smith, which is being described as a Conan-meets-Mad-Max-style story set in the Hell Divers universe. A book review will be published soon.Meaghan, on the other hand, is juggling a few books. She's reading an advanced copy of When She Was Gone by Sarah Foster, a psychological thriller that explores family estrangement and disappearance through multiple POVs.She's also in the early chapters of Grady Hendrix's Witchcraft for Wayward Girls, which touches on the dark history of homes for “troubled” girls, wrapped in Hendrix's signature dark humor. Additionally, she's reading Scythe and Sparrow by Brynn Weaver on her subway commutes - the final installment in the Ruinous Love trilogy, known for its dark romance and black comedy. The first book, Butcher and Blackbird, is even getting a film adaptation.Defining Villains vs. AntiheroesOur main discussion centered around defining the differences between villains and antiheroes. We agreed that villains are typically characterized by outright selfishness, chaos, and harm with little to no regard for others. They oppose the protagonist and often revel in destruction or dominance.Antiheroes, in contrast, may lack traditional heroic qualities - like moral clarity, compassion, or honor - but are usually driven by a personal code or a higher, sometimes noble, purpose. Their actions might be questionable, but their motives often aim toward the greater good. For example, they may take morally ambiguous paths to achieve just ends.We used Patrick Bateman from American Psycho and Joe Goldberg from You to illustrate this line. While both offer internal justifications for their actions, we agree that their intentions and outcomes mark them more as villains than antiheroes. They may rationalize what they do, but ultimately their actions are self-serving and destructive.Another great example we discussed was Zayden from Fourth Wing. Though initially perceived as a villain by the protagonist, Violet, his motivations are revealed to be much more layered, shifting his status into antihero territory. Similar shifts occur in characters like Rhysand from ACOTAR, who is misunderstood early on but ultimately acts with benevolent intentions. The Complexity of Character Roles in Narrative StructureWe examined how literary structure, especially multiple POV storytelling, can alter our perceptions of characters. With multiple viewpoints, we often gain deeper insight into the inner motivations of a character who might otherwise appear villainous from another perspective.Meaghan made the point that antiheroes don't need to be the main character. In stories with multiple perspectives, an antihero can be a supporting or secondary character whose actions significantly impact the narrative, even if they're not the protagonist. We discussed characters like Captain Ahab from Moby Dick, Jay Gatsby, and Shakespearean figures like Macbeth and Hamlet. These figures blur the lines between heroism and villainy by embodying both admirable and damning traits. Captain Ahab is fueled by vengeance but is also driven by deeper human emotions, while Gatsby's immoral actions are motivated by love and longing. We touched on how world-building can influence a character's perceived morality. In tightly defined universes, a single action might shift a character from hero to villain or vice versa. The broader and more complex the setting, the easier it becomes to justify or criticize those actions.Modern Obsession with Antiheroes and Reader RelatabilityA recurring theme in our talk was the rising popularity of antiheroes, especially in BookTok communities and modern literature. Meaghan emphasized how modern readers are drawn to nuanced characters who reflect the gray morality of real life. Straightforward good-versus-evil narratives feel outdated to many readers who want complexity and inner conflict in their characters.Romance novels, particularly dark romance, often play with this dynamic. Characters like Zade Meadows from Haunting Adeline or those in Lights Out by Navetta Allen operate with morally questionable methods but are driven by well-intentioned motives, making them compelling and controversial at the same time.We also reflected on Joe Goldberg's character arc and how the show's clever use of internal narration makes viewers uncomfortably sympathetic toward someone who is clearly a villain. This blurring creates tension and complicates our engagement with the story, prompting us to question our moral compass.Characters like Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones were also mentioned. While initially self-serving, he evolves over the series into someone with more noble intentions, even if he doesn't fit the typical heroic mold. He shifts from a villain to a morally gray character and eventually a reluctant hero in some people's eyes.Genre Examples and Pop Culture InfluenceWe highlighted how genres like comic books and dark fantasy frequently feature antiheroes. Characters like Deadpool, Daredevil, The Punisher, and Batman exemplify this model. These characters challenge traditional morality, often operating outside the law but still striving to uphold a personal sense of justice. Meaghan noted that even characters like Geralt from The Witcher are often misclassified as antiheroes when they may just be grumpy or reluctant heroes.Arthur brought up the Murderbot Diaries as another upcoming example - an android that hacks its programming to gain autonomy while also occasionally killing humans. It's complex, emotionally resonant, and set to become an Apple TV series. We also briefly touched on Silo's Juliet, who represents a reluctant hero more than an antihero. Her role highlights how characters are shaped by the world around them and are often pulled into heroism unwillingly. We examined situations where antiheroes may shift into villain territory, such as Tamlin from ACOTAR, whose descent into darker behavior between books one and two sparked significant conversation among readers. While some hope for redemption, others see the character's trajectory as complete. Finally, we discussed how some stories allow villains or antiheroes to win. Meaghan noted that this feels more realistic because, in life, good doesn't always triumph. These narratives, while less conventional, often leave a more lasting impact on readers.Final Thoughts and What's NextWe wrapped up by affirming our shared preference for morally complex characters over one-dimensional heroes or villains. Antiheroes, with their flaws, motivations, and layered choices, make for more engaging narratives. Readers want characters that mirror real-life complexity, and antiheroes offer that depth in spades. In the closing segment, we teased our next episode, where we'll focus on different portrayals of a famously adapted villain character across books, films, and shows. We plan to compare portrayals, potentially do a ranking, and analyze how this character has changed across time and mediums. In the meantime, we encouraged listeners to check out our latest reviews and ARCs on our website, FullyBooked.ca, and subscribe to the Bookish newsletter to stay up to date with all our content.

There's something about gazing out a body of water that goes to the horizon that reminds you of the vast inhumanness of so much of the planet. I was struck by that last summer at the Indiana Dunes, on the shore of Lake Michigan. When the water rises up to the horizon like that, filling your vision, it's not hard to imagine the existential panic Captain Ahab's youngest sailor felt when he went overboard in a whale fight. The rest of the crew went off chasing the whale, and there he was, bobbing up and down with nothing but ocean around. Don't worry, he got rescued, but in the hour he was alone in the ocean, something changed in him. While he had floated there, surrounded on all sides by undulating water ready to engulf him, “The sea had jeeringly kept his body up, but drowned the infinite of his soul.” I was less likely to be engulfed by the inhuman expanse of the sea because I was on the shore, surrounded by giant umbrellas, beach balls, and plenty of sunscreened humans. Plus, out at the farthest edge of the coast, I could see the smokestacks of the steel industry. They're strangely grounding, those giant structures at the edge of my vision. The sight kept the infinite of my soul from drowning, but probably because it felt like they were jeering at me. Sometimes if you want to be acknowledged, jeering is what you settle for. The smokestacks reminded me of another way I'm engulfed – we're all engulfed: in a world run by fossil fuels. Which is not great. Not just because they're heating the planet up. Also because fossil fuel production takes land, and labor, and leaves an immense amount of pollution in the communities that surround it. Jeering might be the right word, too, for how those smokestacks relate to the region around them. The Dunes are in the Calumet Region, which also includes cities like Gary, Hammond, and Michigan city – cities dominated, according to scholar and writer Ava Tomasula y Garcia, by smokestacks and “air you can see and taste because it's so dirty.” The region was dominated for over a century by some of the dirtiest industries in the world. Not too long ago, Ava published an article about all this in Belt Magazine. She tells the story of the oil and gas industry in Indiana, and considers how its influence continues to shape the region. It was because of that article that I wanted to talk with her. Ava is a graduate student in Anthropology at Columbia University, where she's focused on medical anthropology. Specifically, she's interested in undiagnosable illness that people living in the Rust Belt and the Calumet Region link to industrial toxicity. These are not “monumental” illness like cancer and asthma but things that are much harder to diagnose, like brain fog and nausea. I hope to have her on again to talk about that research. Today's episode, though, is about how the geology of the region ended up shaping its industrial development, which also shaped its social history – who moved to the region, how race and labor struggles played out, and how regions like the Calumet, often known these days as the “Rust Belt,” are more complex than that term implies. And after that, we go back through the archives of our classified ads, to remember what used to be for sale. Music Our theme song is by Amy Oelsner and Justin Vollmar. The 2024 Record Store Day is in the books. We had a variety of RSD exclusive releases in mind when we set out this past weekend morn. One particular platter was the '77 Ennio Morricone "Orca" soundtrack. The flick is an old fave about a vengeful killer whale seeking revenge on the fisherman that slaughtered his family. We obsessed over this record, bouncing from shop to shop. Kind of a real life Captain Ahab as he obsessed over his elusive whale in classic novel "Moby Dick". Just call us Ismael. Was RSD a success for you? Do you find your booty? In our "News, Views and Tunes", we pay tribute to two legends and announce the 2024 This Is Hardcore fest. Musically, crank some Witchfinder General, Cold As Life, ACXDC, Pentagram (Chile), Seth, Castle Rat and we introduce Quebec bashers Backstabber in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns Up!

Come join our book club and listen as we read Akino Matsuri's horror stories, one that is about a mermaid. Another about a family that move into a house that has a dark history. And a woman who seems to have looks, fame and fortune, as well as mysterious past. Skip plot synopsis @3:34 Email: WeAppreciateManga@Gmail.com 133: Petshop of Horrors vol. 8 By Akino Matsuri Translation by Tomoharu Iwo and James Lucas Jones Lettering by Nunu Ngien D goes to a beach resort with Leon and Chris. Leon is there only to pick up ladies but when Chris and D help a girl find a lost ear-ring they are rewarded a boat trip by the girl's grandfather, a man who spends his years chasing a mermaid he once saw at a young age. A violent wave hits the boat causing D to fall overboard, when they find D washed up on shore, he does not seem to be his usual self. D only recognises the girl's grandfather, calling him Shido, which is odd because Shido did not give out his name. The next day D predicts a volcano erupting, all islanders set out to sea but they lose D once again. The next time they find D he is with a mermaid, having had a body swap experience, D is now back into his own body. Having been saved previously by the mermaid, he was able to repay the favour by letting her reunite with her long-lost love, Shido, whom had no memory of her, since the only way he can keep his memories is if he stays with the mermaid. They leave Shido behind with her, but unfortunately for Leon this means he will forget the existence of mermaids. The second story involves an entire family who have recently moved in to a new house. The family enter the pet shop looking to buy one however they do not seem to agree on what pet they want. The Count ends up choosing a pet for them that just so happens to appear to each family member as the pet that they originally wanted, for example, to the grandmother it appears as a cat but to the youngest son it appears as a gecko, D names the pet Tenko (or Tiān hú / Ten-chan depending on whichever translation) but the rest of the family bicker about what new name to give it. One lonely girl in the family sees Ten-chan as a human, and it becomes clear that the pet favours this girl who seems down in spirit and isolated from the family. In truth the girl is a ghost, a part of the family that previously owned the house. D, having a sense of what's up checks with the police and visits the house. When he arrives, there is a house fire, the family escape except for their pet, who stays inside with the ghost. D comes to save Ten-chan who as it turns out, is a kitsune (a mythical nine-tailed fox), but not before they exorcise the ghost and let her pass on to the other side. In the story “Deja-vu” D lets Chris decide what pet to give to a woman who seems to have everything. Searching the pet shop, he sees the child like ghosts of twin sisters, Meanwhile the detective Leon discovers the woman patron to be a missing person, long thought to be dead and intends to reunite the woman with her sister. When the time comes for the woman to meet her pet, she is forced to confront her inner child. Or as D calls it, a beautiful bird. Note: The bonus chapter ‘Flowers, Detective and the Detective's Little Brother' will be spoken about on a later episode of our podcast which will cover all bonus chapters. Shido is chasing a mermaid believing it to be a portent of doom, its appearance being a bad omen. In truth the mermaid has pre-cognition and the power to change a person's memory as well as save those from the disasters she predicts. They are very similar in that Captain Ahab and Shido both own boats, have scars that remind them of a perceived injustice and an obsession that leads them to chase. For Ahab it is the white whale, for Shido it is the mermaid. · The Déjà vu story shares a certain similarity to Truman Capote's novel ‘Breakfast at Tiffany's' in that Holly Golightly is a woman who flees her family to become a wealthy socialite in New York. Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe too, who was born Norma Jean Mortensen with her natural hair being a curly red and not her iconic straight blonde, she would defy her husband Jim Dougherty to pursue a career in showbusiness, albeit (and by his own account) he was initially supportive of her ambition until it became clear that she had to be single to get a contract in Hollywood. In Herman Melville's Moby Dick, we meet Captain Ahab for the first time long after the Pequod has left Nantucket. “There was,” says Melville's Ishmael, “an infinity of firmest fortitude, a determinate, unsurrenderable wilfulness, in the fixed and fearless, forward dedication of that glance. Not a word he spoke; nor did his officers say aught to him; though by all their minutest gestures and expressions, they plainly showed the uneasy, if not painful, consciousness of being under a troubled master-eye. And not only that, but moody stricken Ahab stood before them with a crucifixion in his face; in all the nameless regal overbearing dignity of some mighty woe." Dr. Virginia Arbery has taught Moby Dick for years is, once again, reading it with our Wyoming Catholic College seniors many of whom are introduced to the book and Captain Ahab for the first time.
There may be some dated or downright silly elements of Cutter's Way, Ivan Passer's 1981 mystery—but what's great about it outweighs any of its clumsiness and stays in the viewer's memory. Not enough people know about John Heard's performance as the unhinged, unlikable, yet undeniably compelling Alex Cutter; this film without any scenes of military conflict is one of the best about Vietnam. Join Mike and Dan for a conversation about the ways in which the title character resembles Captain Ahab physically, emotionally, and psychologically; how the film uses and then abandons Hollywood conventions; and the ways in which a convoluted murder plot doesn't detract from complicated issues of heroism, friendship, and justice. So jump on that white horse and give it a listen! One of our favorite memoirs of Vietnam is Things I'll Never Forget: Memories of a Marine in Vietnam. Thom Jones's short story collection The Pugilist at Rest contains incredible fiction about the war (and would, we imagine, be admired by Alex Cutter). Follow us on X or Letterboxd. For years, the "white whale" of Medicare reimbursement has created many "Captain Ahab" impressions among policymakers and professional societies. In a movie script written in the style of George A. Romero, the Radiation Oncology Case Rate Program (ROCR) was unexpectedly published on June 28th, generating significant buzz among the RadOnc (RadMed) community. The model projects $212 million dollars in savings for CMS over a 5-year period but...how? Few things, even in literature, can really be said to be unique — but Moby Dick is truly unlike anything written before or since. The novel is nominally about the obsessive hunt by the crazed Captain Ahab of the book's eponymous white whale. But interspersed in that story are digressions, paradoxes, philosophical riffs on whaling and life, and a display of techniques so advanced for its time that some have referred to the 1851 Moby Dick as the first “modern” novel. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (03/15/2023): 3:05pm- On Tuesday, Congressman Jeff Van Drew—Republican representing New Jersey's 2nd Congressional District—held a town hall meeting to address the estimated fourteen whales that have washed up along the Atlantic coast since December 2022. Many environmental experts believe the sudden, drastic uptick in whale deaths is linked to offshore wind development's usage of sonar to map the ocean's floor. Why doesn't New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy do something to halt this disturbing trend? 3:30pm- Rich recaps Congressman Jeff Van Drew's (R-NJ) town hall. PLUS why is NPR bizarrely blaming Atlantic coast whale deaths on lobstermen? 3:50pm- Listener “Groovie Grapes” on Twitter hilariously declares, “Captain Ahab had more compassion for whales than Gov. Murphy.” 4:05pm- On Wednesday, the House Homeland Security Committee held a field hearing in McAllen, Texas to address the crisis currently unfolding at the U.S. Southern border. Amazingly, no Congressional Democrats attended the hearing. Congressman Mark Green (R-TN) vociferously condemned his Democrat colleagues for boycotting the hearing, failing to help “shine a light on the truth,” and ultimately partaking in an unproductive “political stunt." 4:15pm- Following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation announced they will guarantee all customer deposits—even those exceeding the FDIC's standard $250,000 per depositor guarantee. While speaking on the Senate floor, Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) stated: “I'm not going to bubble wrap it…It's a bailout.” 4:30pm- Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo—the Nigerian brothers hired by actor Jussie Smollet to fake a hate crime—spoke with Fox News and provided play-by-play of how the hoax unfolded in January of 2019. 4:45pm- On Tuesday, a Russian Su-27 jet collided with a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone—causing the drone to crash-land in the Black Sea. While speaking with the press, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and General Mark Milley denied that the incident amounted to a potential act of war. According to reports, Russia is now attempting to recover the $32 million U.S. drone. 5:05pm- The Drive at 5: Dr. Wilfred Reilly—Professor of Political Science at Kentucky State University & Author of “Taboo: 10 Facts You Can't Talk About”—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss Stanford Associate Dean of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Tirien Steinbach interrupting a speech being given by Judge Kyle Duncan, a Trump-appointed judge serving on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Steinbach claimed of Judge Duncan's guest lecture, “for many people at the law school…your advocacy, your opinions from the bench, land as absolute disenfranchisement of their rights.” What is happening on college campuses? 5:40pm- James O'Keefe joins The Rich Zeoli Show to announce the launch of his latest media venture—O'Keefe Media Group. The group promises to empower and equip “a movement of thousands of people…with the support of an in-house team of elite journalists to bring factual, unbiased stories to light. PLUS did Kal Penn steal Rich's Buffalo Bill bit? 6:30pm- Momma Zeoli warns Rich to be nice to people… 6:35pm- In his most recent editorial, Reason's Jacob Sullum argues that President Joe Biden “wants to redefine federally licensed gun dealers in service of an ineffective anti-crime strategy.” You can read the full article here: https://reason.com/2023/03/14/bidens-plan-to-unilaterally-expand-background-checks-for-gun-buyers-is-legally-and-logically-dubious/ 6:45pm- Was Brendan Frasier's Academy Award winning performance in “The Whale” fatphobic? Dove soap seems to think so—tweeting: “Stop giving fat suits awards!! We want better representation in Hollywood.”

EPISODE 155: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:42) SPECIAL COMMENT: "A Democratic president," writes Will Saletan (whose brother and I co-wrote a book of poems in 4th grade, "is standing up to Putin. And he's facing a Republican who would rather attack Mickey Mouse." But Ron DeSantis's ignorant, naive, isolationism is much worse. It opens the door for a full-on Republican campaign pledge (under him or Trump) to betray Ukraine as of 1/20/25. Just last night a retired American military officer went on Fox and told Carlson "The truth is coming out that this war was not started by Russia." What happens on 1/20/25, if one of them is inaugurated as president, and moments later Putin bombs...Poland? Because that just went from farfetched scenario to tangible possibility as the Polish Security Agency discovered Russian agents installing hidden cameras along the Polish railroad lines on which Western ammunition and weapons are transported to Kiev. If Putin has already game-planned an attack on NATO, we have to wonder: Would Trump or DeSantis be so committed to the anti-Ukraine, pro-Putin stance that THEIR United States would wind up permitting or even supporting a Russian war against NATO? It is a long, interwoven saga of DeSantis and Fox and Trump and Georgia 2020 and Marjorie Taylor Greene disclosing classified information at the Mexican border and how you won't hear this on Fox - or on CNN for that matter, where David Zaslav publicly recommitted to Chris Licht (who when we were at MSNBC together we all thought used to eat paste) in a meeting with 600 CNN Managers (CNN? 600 Managers? There's your problem right there). The New CNN's recommitment to useless, pointless, banal stenography was brilliantly characterized by Dylan Byers of Puck: "Nearly one year in, it's clear that Zaslav still believes in his vision for CNN as a nonpartisan, broadcast-style news digest, and still believes that Licht is his Captain Ahab." Captain...AHAB? Wait, doesn't Moby-Dick (or is it Moby-Licht) end with mass death? CALL ME ISHMAEL. MY BOAT SANK. THE END. B-Block (19:18) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Shenanigan and Banshee, 14-week old shep/husky puppies in Devore, CA. (20:15) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: My career at the RKO Radio Network, where my boss was Charley Steiner, and where he once tasked me with finding out when and where a secret meeting between Yankees' owner George Steinbrenner and Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn would be held. And after I gave up and went to get some pizza, I literally RAN INTO STEINBRENNER ON THE STREET YELLING OUT THE DETAILS OF THE MEETING. C-Block (43:40) MORE THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: A little under the weather today so let me re-tell the adventures of another '80s job, which I waited 10 months to be able to start, and which lasted only half that long. Why almost nobody remembers me as "Keith Olbermann, SportsCenter 5, Boston."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Host Dennis Leap and special guest Mr. Grant Turgeon discuss Chapter 71 of Herman Melville's American classic Moby Dick. Captain Ahab signals another Nantucket whale ship named the Jeroboam to have a meeting to gain information on Moby Dick. The Jeroboam's Captain Mayhew was fearful to join up with the Pequod because there was a malignant epidemic on board. Onboard the Jeroboam was an insane sailor who believed he was the archangel Gabriel. From a distance between the ships, Gabriel warns Ahab not to pursue Moby Dick because it would lead to his death. Ahab, like the ancient Israelite King Jeroboam, ignores the warning of a prophet.

The universe has a sense of humor. I know this because right now, in theaters, I have the opportunity to find a marquee where the phrases COCAINE BEAR and JESUS REVOLUTION can sit side by side. What a time to be alive. And for a title so brashly blatant (here I go with the alliteration again, Lord) as COCAINE BEAR, I'd expect for the movie to be as simple as humanly possible. It's a bear. It does coke. It goes on a woodland rampage. Simple. I don't need a story about a single mom (Keri Russell) clashing with her preteen (Brooklynn Prince in a role that never ceases to make me feel old, because wasn't she just playing a precocious first-grader in THE FLORIDA PROJECT like...yesterday?) only for said girl to be kidnapped by the Cocaine Bear. I don't really need a story about a sad sack drunkard son of a mob boss (Alden Ehrenreich) whining about his ex to his best friend (O'Shea Jackson Jr.) while they track down the missing coke. I really don't need to know the escapades of a trigger-happy park ranger (Margo Martindale). Hell, if we can just let mob boss Ray Liotta spend 90 min as aviator-wielding Captain Ahab facing off against a drugged-up psycho black bear, I'd be set. But sometimes, we just don't get what we want. We get far, far less. And sometimes, people bring infants to the 10:45pm screening. --------------------------- Closing Song: "Sleep When Dead" - A Giant Dog --------------------------- Review THE MOVIES on Apple Podcasts & I'll read it on the next episode! --------------------------- Follow Daniel on: Twitter - @TheMovies_Pod Instagram - @themoviespod Letterboxd - https://letterboxd.com/Daniel_Berrios/
David Rothenberg is a writer, philosopher, ecologist, and musician, speaking out for nature in all aspects of his diverse work. He investigates the musicality of animals and the role of nature in philosophy, with a particular interest in understanding other species by making music with them. As a professor of philosophy and music at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, he “teaches engineers nonquantifiable things.” He is also an acclaimed composer and jazz clarinetist known for his integration of world music with improvisation and electronics. Originally intending to be a scientist, music pulled Rothenberg away during his high school years – ultimately becoming the modality through which he would explore nature and deep ecology. Looking back at those high school years of the 1970s, Rothenberg told The New York Times, "I was influenced by saxophonist Paul Winter's Common Ground album, which had his own compositions with whale and bird sounds mixed in. That got me interested in using music to learn more about the natural world." As an undergraduate at Harvard, Rothenberg created his own major to combine music with communication. He traveled in Europe after graduation, playing jazz clarinet. Listening to the recorded song of a hermit thrush, he heard structure that reminded him of a Miles Davis solo. Because of Rothenberg's study of animal song and his experimental interactions with animal music, he is often called an "interspecies musician." He is said to "explore the sounds of all manner of living things as both an environmental philosopher and jazz musician." Rothenberg's book Why Birds Sing: A Journey into the Mystery of Bird Song (Basic Books 2005) was inspired by an impromptu duet in March 2000 with a laughingthrush at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. A CD accompanying the book also featured Rothenberg's duet with an Australian lyrebird. The book served as the basis for a 2006 feature-length BBC documentary of the same name. His next book, Thousand Mile Song (Basic Books 2008), reflects similar curiosity about whale sounds considered as music, from which both scientific and artistic insights emerge. It was turned into a film for French television. Philip Hoare of The London Telegraph said of the book, "while Rothenberg's madcap mission to play jazz to the whales seems as crazy as Captain Ahab's demented hunt for the great White Whale, it is sometimes such obsessions that reveal inner truths...I find myself more than a little sympathetic to the author's faintly bonkers but undoubtedly stimulating intent: to push at the barriers between human history and natural history." His book Survival of the Beautiful: Art, Science and Evolution (Bloomsbury Press 2011) was described by the journal Nature as exploring the theme that beauty is not random but is intrinsic to life—and that evolution proceeds by sumptuousness, not by utility alone. His remarkable output in books is matched by his creative output in other areas. As a composer and jazz clarinetist, Rothenberg has sixteen CDs out under his own name over the past 30 years. His 2020 releases include In the Wake of Memories and They Say Humans Exist, named best jazz album of the year by Stereo+ Magazine in Norway. He has performed or recorded with Peter Gabriel, Pauline Oliveros, Ray Phiri and Suzanne Vega. As a musician, Rothenberg tries to blend the indigenous energy of the world's primal music with the exploratory spirit of improvisation. He has studied jazz clarinet professionally, as well as Tibetan ritual wind music in Nepal and folk music in Norway. Since 2014, Rothenberg has been an Ambassador of the international non-governmental humanitarian mission, the Dolphin Embassy, participating in non-invasive research of the possibilities of free dolphins and whales – playing music for them. Today I talked to Hester Blum, editor of a new edition of Moby-Dick (Oxford UP, 2022). "It will be a strange sort of a book, tho', I fear; blubber is blubber you know; tho' you may get oil out of it, the poetry runs as hard as sap from a frozen maple tree;--& to cook the thing up, one must needs throw in a little fancy.... Yet I mean to give the truth of the thing, spite of this." Moby-Dick has a monumental reputation. Less well known are the novel's unexpectedly weird, funny, tantalizing, messy, and wondrous moments. Narrator Ishmael, along with the whaleship Pequod's other meanest mariners, and renegades and castaways, is beguiled into joining Captain Ahab in his vengeful pursuit of the white whale that dismasted him. But along the way, Ishmael takes the reader along many a detour into variegated ways of knowing. In a tone strangely compounded of fun and fury, Moby-Dick brings outlandish curiosity to bear on the multitudinous, oceanic scale of our diverse world. William Domnarski is a longtime lawyer who before and during has been a literary guy, with a Ph.D. in English. He's written five books on judges, lawyers, and courts, two with Oxford, one with Illinois, one with Michigan, and one with the American Bar Association. Learn more about your ad choices.
