David Remnick: How The Two State Solution Ended in Disaster

For decades, the United States backed efforts to achieve a two-state solution—in which Israel would exist side by side with the Palestinian state, with both states recognizing each other's claim to contested territory. The veteran negotiators Hussein Agha, representing Palestine, and Robert Malley, an American diplomat, played instrumental roles in that long effort, including the critical Camp David summit of 2000. But, in their new book, “Tomorrow Is Yesterday,” they conclude that they were part of a charade. There was never any way that a two-state solution could satisfy either of the parties, Agha and Malley tell The New Yorker Radio Hour's David Remnick in an interview. “A waste of time is almost a charitable way to look at it,” Malley notes bitterly. “At the end of that thirty-year-or-so period, the Israelis and Palestinians are in a worse situation than before the U.S. got so heavily invested.” The process, appealing to Western leaders and liberals in Israel, was geared to “find the kind of solutions that have a technical outcome, that are measurable, and that can be portrayed by lines on maps,” Agha says. “It completely discarded the issue of emotions and history. You can't be emotional. You have to be rational. You have to be cool. But rational and cool has nothing to do with the conflict.” On the Media is supported by listeners like you. Nearly two years into the Israel-Hamas war, the two-state solution is back in the news with the United Nations General Assembly voting in support. Unlike in years past, October 7 and the drawn-out conflict in Gaza has led to a wider and much more polarized conversation.  European nations, Arab states, and much of the international community are advocating for Palestinian statehood, while the Trump administration and Israel continue to push back.  Was the two-state solution ever a serious possibility? What roles did the United States, Palestinian Liberation Organization, Israel, and key Arab states play? And if not two states, what solution if any, is possible?  Join Aaron David Miller as he sits down with Robert Malley, former Middle East adviser in three presidential administrations and co-author of the new book Tomorrow Is Yesterday: Life, Death, and the Pursuit of Peace in Israel/Palestine, to discuss these and other issues.

Two new books dive into the details of diplomacy. First, in the 1960s U Thant became the first non-Western secretary-general of the United Nations. Now his grandson, historian Thant Myint-U, has written Peacemaker, a new biography of the diplomat. In today's episode, Thant speaks with NPR's Michele Keleman about his grandfather's journey. Then, Hussein Agha and Robert Malley have been a part of negotiations to end the conflict between Israel and Palestine. On September 9, 2025, Israel Defense Forces struck inside Doha targeting members of the Hamas negotiating team. With the Israeli government appearing to reject any ceasefire despite the remaining hostages in Gaza, urgent questions emerge about the future of millions of Palestinians. Amid the crisis, a new book offers some clarity and context: "Tomorrow Is Yesterday: Life, Death, and the Pursuit of Peace in Israel/Palestine" by Rob Malley and Hussein Agha. Drawing on decades of negotiations between the US, the Israeli government, and the representatives of the Palestinian people, the authors explore how we got here and what it could portend for the future. This conversation was recorded on September 10, 2025. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode Tomorrow is Yesterday which aired on January 26, 1967, Star Date 3113.2.   The USS Enterprise is thrown back in time to Earth during the 1960s by the effects of a high gravity "black star". Enterprise ends up in Earth's upper atmosphere and is picked up as a UFO on military radar and is photographed by a USAF jet. Fearing the pilot could disrupt the timeline if returned to Earth, Kirk at first decides that the pilot must stay with the Enterprise. After learning of the existence of film taken of the Enterprise by Christopher's wing cameras, Kirk and Sulu beam down to the airbase to recover the film and any other evidence of their visit. After they return to the ship, Spock and Chief Engineer Scott inform Kirk of a possible escape method by slingshotting around the Sun to break away and return to their time. Kirk okays the maneuver, and time on board the Enterprise moves backwards. The Enterprise then successfully returns to the 23rd century.  Compliance Takeaways: Sometimes unexpected developments can cause higher risk. What is your investigation protocol? A freak accident sends the Enterprise hurtling through space and back in time to Earth in the late 1960s, where it is detected and classified by the U.S. military as an Unidentified Flying Object. Complicating matters further, Captain Kirk is forced to beam aboard an Air Force pilot named John Christopher, whose duty it will be to report everything he is now seeing about this vast starship from the future. Kirk and Spock must figure out a way to return the Enterprise to its own time, but not before they must return Captain Christopher to Earth without jeopardizing the history of the future. With the stakes so very high, it's remarkable how much levity is featured in "Tomorrow is Yesterday," the second Original Series teleplay written by Dorothy "D.C." Fontana. The result is "Star Trek's" first full-on comedy, and it's a delightful episode, but the humor never comes at the expense of the quality, the high drama and the superb performances that had come to represent the series at its finest. Tomorrow is Yesterday was the nineteenth episode of Star Trek's debut season to air, with the Enterprise trapped in the past and some unfortunate airmen getting more than a glimpse of the future. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss time paradoxes and before that they discuss the outcome of that conversation. Escaping a black hole, the Enterprise is thrown back in time to the 20th century where they inadvertently pick up Captain Christopher (Roger Perry) and later an Air Police Sergeant (Hal Lynch). Attempting to extricate themselves from the situation, Kirk and Sulu visit the air base, where the captain is captured by Col. Fellini (Ed Peck). A rescue follows before Spock devises a plan to restore the timeline and return the two visitors to their former lives without any damage caused. Tomorrow is Yesterday was directed by Michael O'Herlihy, the his only Star Trek episode. The writer was DC Fontana, a Star Trek legend. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered what the point of staging a daring ground mission was when you intended to reset time all along. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. Tomorrow is Yesterday was released in 1967. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on CBS All Access in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.
