On Episode 152 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis concludes the celebration of the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE! This film is a 1979 American science fiction drama directed by Robert Wise. It is based on and stars the cast of the 1966–1969 television series Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry, who serves as producer. In the film, set in the 2270s, a mysterious and powerful alien cloud known as V'Ger approaches Earth, destroying everything in its path. Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) assumes command of the recently refitted Starship Enterprise to lead it on a mission to determine V'Ger's origins and save the planet. Assisting Curtis in this endeavor in an exclusive interview is CRAIG HUXLEY, former child actor and inventor of the "Blaster Beam" (the musical instrument which makes the V'GER Sting sounds on the Star Trek: The Motion Picture soundtrack)! He has used this instrument in other films including Star Trek II and Star Trek III, as well as more modern films like 10 Cloverfield Lane. What's even more interesting is that Craig was also a child actor and he actually appears in the 1967 Star Trek TOS episode "Operation Annihilate!", wherein he portrayed Captain Kirk's nephew, Peter Kirk. The following year, he had a different role in the TOS episode "And the Children Shall Lead". Additionally, he appeared in television shows such as Bewitched, The Flying Nun, Kung Fu and The Brady Bunch. Craig is joined in this interview by his lovely and talented daughter FIONA HUXLEY, who is a wonderful singer, songwriter, actress, and speaker in her own right! She masterfully assists Craig in talking about his career in and out of Star Trek, and how so much of what he has done has weaved itself into so many parts of the pop culture of the 1960s all the way up to the present! Be sure and follow Craig on Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram and YouTube! You may also follow Fiona on Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram and YouTube! In this episode, Dana and Dan discuss "Operation - Annihilate." The guys talk about flying parasite aliens, meeting Kirk's brother (but not for long), and how Spock goes blind. They also ponder what constitutes a ramble and whether it is possible to get William Shatner's toupee stylist to be a guest on the show. And then there is all the talk about the annoying kid who plays Kirk's nephew... Make sure to join Dana and Dan next week for the end-of-season one special, featuring guests from Riverside, Iowa, the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk. In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode Operation Annihilate!, which aired on April 13, 1967, Star Date 3287.2. The Enterprise goes to investigate the planet Deneva. Spock consults the computer and discovers. While approaching the planet, the Enterprise encounters a Denevan ship heading straight for the sun. The pilot flies into the sun, claiming he is finally "free." On the planet, a landing party enters a building where they find hundreds of small creatures that look like plastic pancakes. The creatures do not register on the tricorder and are highly resistant to phaser fire. One of the creatures attacks Spock; despite his incredible pain, Spock escapes from the sick bay and attempts to take over the bridge before subduing and tranquilizing. However, he is subsequently able to bring himself under control. He goes to the planet to retrieve a creature for analysis. An analysis of the alien by McCoy shows it to be a one-cell creature resembling a brain cell. It also seems to be part of a larger organism composed of physically separate parts. McCoy tries to find the agent responsible for killing the creature when the Denevan ship flew into the sun. The Enterprise consequently rings the planet with satellites (at 72 miles altitude), which bathe Deneva in ultraviolet radiation and kill the aliens. Meanwhile, Spock's eyes recover, and his sight is restored because of the Vulcan inner eyelid. Compliance Takeaways: 1. Leadership can require difficult decisions. 2. Data analytics will be key for compliance professionals going forward. 3. What is your triage program for internal reporting? We're late this week on Boldly, Tho, but we are bringing you something mildly spooky with the Original Series's Operation: Annihilate! Close out the first season of TOS with us as we hit another round of huge stakes, learn about secret family members, and rush some science, to the detriment of those we love! Plus: space jellies again!
Star Trek TOS S1E29 Operation Annihilate
While tracking the progression of mass insanity across the galaxy, the Enterprise arrives at the planet Deneva, where the inhabitants have been infected by invading parasites that control their human hosts with immense pain. If Captain Kirk cannot destroy the parasites and cure the more than one million colonists, he will be forced to make the most difficult command decision of his life in an effort to stop the madness from progressing any further. The landmark first season of "Star Trek" came to a close with "Operation -- Annihilate!", a flawed episode that hardly represents the best of the series, though its depiction of agony certainly one of the most disturbing to endure. But it still has many merits, the biggest of which are the top-notch performances from William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley, who continued to strengthen the incredible dynamic between Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Operation -- Annihilate! was the twenty-ninth episode of Star Trek's debut season to air, with a colony under attack and a valued crew member in great distress. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss family, friendship and medical malpractice. After tracking a pattern of unexplained erratic behaviour across a sector of space, the Enterprise crew discover the affliction has reached a Federation colony where Kirk's brother Sam (William Shatner), his wife Aurelan (Joan Swift) and son Peter (Craig Huxley) live. Spock becomes infected by the parasitic invaders and must fight overwhelming pain and his captain's better judgment to help Kirk and McCoy figure out a way to save the colonists - and save Spock himself. Operation -- Annihilate! was directed by Herschel Daugherty, the first of his two Star Trek episodes. The writer was Steven Carabatsos, his second and final episode for the show. A kibeszélő tartalmából: • Nehezen emészthető gyermekszereplők, és egy furcsa módon felöltöztetett vendégszereplő, aki valójában ügyész: hogyan lett ’A megkísértés’ a legrosszabb Star Trek epizódok egyike? • Kirk a fekete barlangban: míg az angol változatban a kapitány szövege teljesen értelmes, ha visszafelé játsszuk, a magyar verzióban se előre, se hátra nem található létező szó. • A zöld színű Melvin Belli: a hang elváltoztatása, valamint az átlátszó, szellemszerű megjelenés az ügyész színészi hiányosságainak leplezése miatt vált szükségessé, amit maga Gene Roddenberry javasolt. • A Tommy szerepében látható Craig Huxley játszotta Kirk unokaöccsét (Peter Kirköt) a Paraziták (Operation -- Annihilate!, TOS 1x29) című epizódban, Brian Tochi pedig később a TNG-ben is látható (Lin zászlós a Night Terrors című epizódban).

Creating The Standard Orbit Canon: Season One. There’s a lot of Star Trek out there that doesn’t really fit into the wider continuity. What if you could focus on only the episodes that just help tell the story of Star Trek? In this episode of Standard Orbit, Mike and Drew conduct an editing exercise in which we go through Season One of The Original Series and figure out what we think really needs to be there in order to create the “Standard Orbit Canon.” No episode is automatically safe, each one must stand our test of continuity, play an important role in the future of Star Trek, and eventually lead to the finale of The Original Series, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Countdown to Darkness #1 and Star Trek Ongoing. As with the 2009 film, J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot—together with IDW—are utilizing the comics to deliver the background to what will take place on the big screen. After months of speculation, the first issue of Countdown to Darkness brings us a well-written story that starts to make a small bit of sense out of what we've seen in the trailers. And then it throws a wicked curveball at us. In this episode of Literary Treks we discuss Countdown to Darkness #1 and what it could mean for the movie. We also discuss the first six issues of Star Trek Ongoing—"Where No Man Has Gone Before," "The Galileo Seven," and "Operation: Annihilate"—and speculate on what clues about the movie may be hidden there. In our news segment we look at the surprising reveal of Klingons on the cover of Countdown to Darkness #4, the special limited edition Enterprise cover for Countdown to Darkness #1, and the Countdown to Darkness Collection that will bring together all four issues in one volume in April. We also talk about the rest of IDW's 2013 comic lineup, which includes the John Byrne collection, back stories for Sulu and Chekov, and the Space-Spanning Treasury.
A look at the TOS episode, "Operation: Annihilate!" this week on the podcast. I discuss the "Into Darkness" teaser trailer, talk "The Walking Dead" and even more geeky goodness. Enjoy the show!
Operation: Annihilate, IDW Comics, and Star Trek 2013. The 2009 J.J. Abrams film set Star Trek on a new course, but did so with familiar characters. As Spock said in the film, “Whatever our lives might have been….our destinies have changed.” Under the guidance of Roberto Orci, IDW is exploring these new destinies in the Star Trek Ongoing comic series. What's more, these comics have direct tie-ins to the next movie—called Star Trek 2 by many—scheduled for release in 2013. Clues to the plot and subplot are being placed in these new takes on classic episodes. But what are those clues? In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by John Tenuto and Sean Tourangeau as we discuss the TOS episode “Operation:Annihilate!” and its re-imaged storyline in the comics, along with what clues we are finding that give hints to what we'll see in the next film. In news we cover Muckle Mannequins' life-sized Spock figure, a visual take on TNG Season 8 by Bad Machinery's John Allison, the new animated parody “Stalled Trek: Amutt Time,” the Vanguard finale, and the musical collection “TNG: The Ron Jones Project.”
Blood Fever. The Original Series episode “Amok Time” established the Vulcan mating ritual known as pon farr, the effects it has on male Vulcans, and the rituals surrounding it. When Voyager launched in 1995 it was the first series since TOS to feature a Vulcan as part of the main cast, and so it was inevitable that the writers would revisit this biological trial. When the time came, however, they threw in an unexpected twist. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by our Voyager series editor Charlynn Schmiedt as we discuss the third-season episode “Blood Fever” and how Voyager handled the touchy subject of the pon farr. In news we cover Priceline killing off Shatner, the ThinkGeek Electronic Door Chime, real-life transparent aluminum, Star Trek Who Wants to be A Millionaire?, updates on the TNG Remastered project, and IDW's Star Trek Ongoing #5 “Operation: Annihilate!” Plus we take another dip into our bag of rejected Star Trek IV plots and Greg auditions for the role of “Sound Effects Guy” on Star Trek: The Original Series.
