Today's episode is with award-winning writer, scholar and activist Frank B. Wilderson III. Frank is known as the Godfather of Afropessimism: a critical theory that positions anti-blackness as the antidote for the psychic well-being of society. Did that sound heady? Well, pull out our pen and paper. Frank's curiosity and fearlessness in revealing hard truths, takes us on a scholarly journey that will surely require some unpacking. In part two of today's episode, Frank reminds us to be fearless in the pursuit of knowledge, even if that knowledge reveals unhealthy truths. Strap in, as Frank takes us on a ride exploring the foundational tenets Afropessimism along with his own thoughts about reconciliation, activism, and what it means to be a Black individual living in a state of social consciousness and racial reckoning. Today's episode is with award-winning writer, scholar and activist Frank B. Wilderson III. Frank is known as the Godfather of Afropessimism: a critical theory that anti-blackness is “necessary for world-making at every level of abstraction.” Did that sound heady? Well, get ready. Frank's curiosity, appetite for knowledge and nuance, along with his fearlessness to explore what is, in the absence of what isn't, reminds us of the importance of inquiry and the power of examining the world around us. In part one of today's episode, Frank reminds us to be fearless in the pursuit of knowledge, even if that knowledge reveals unhealthy truths. "Can I love the world and hate how it makes me feel?" is a quote from Son Little's song, "O Mother", that was written in response to hearing about the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. On this episode, I look at the musical similarities and differences between 16 different songs written by Black artists that speak about oppression, these shootings, or are a call to action, from the past six years. Here is the list of songs I mention in this episode: America – Abraham Alexander; Glory – Common and John Legend; LAND OF THE FREE – joey bada$$; Freedom – Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar; Alright – Kendrick Lamar; This is America – Childish Gambino; Black Man in a White World – Michael Kiwanuka; Rise Up – Andra Day; Don't shoot – The Game, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Diddy, Faboolous, Wale, DJ Khaled, Swizz Beats, Yo Gotti, Curren$y, Problem, King Pharoah, TGT; I Might Need Security – Chance the Rapper; What am I – Jordan Mackampa; On my own – Lecrae, Leon Bridges; Revival – Gregory Porter; O Mother – Son Little; 16 Shots – Vic Mensa; This Land – Gary Clark Jr; Nina Cried Power - Hozier, Mavis Staples, Sheep - Mt. Continue lendo "CM #03 – This Is America [Childish Gambino]"

After watching the blockbuster hit "Ocean’s 8" and BBC America’s cat-and-mouse drama "Killing Eve," we noticed some similarities in these leading women - they’re all “bad.” They’re indulgent and driven. They care about their work more than your feelings. They perform for each other more than they do for men (do they even perform for men?). They’re complicated and that’s why we like them. So we wonder: is our current cultural climate — specifically around this #MeToo moment — making space for more dynamic women characters?Discussed this week:Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins uses signs to advocate for criminal justice reformActor Ari'el Stachel delivers moving speech at the 72nd annual Tony Awards"The Man Behind the Music of 'Broad City'" (Stacey Anderson, The New York Times, March 22, 2016)"This is America” (Childish Gambino, 2018)"All Mine" (Kanye West, 2018)"Why 'You are loved' & 'please reach out' are crappy things to post after someone has died by suicide" (Deanna Zandt, Medium, June 8, 2018)The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline - 800-273-8255"Dykes to Watch Out For" (Alison Bechdel, 1983-2008)"Ocean's 8" (dir: Gary Ross, Warner Bros., 2018)"Killing Eve" (Sid Gentle Films, 2018)
