Famed Kiwi singer, songwriter and broadcaster Anika Moa has broken away from the spotlight to focus on smaller projects. She's recently released her first children's book, The Witch of Maketu - and she's set to star in Auckland Theatre company's retelling of Peter Pan this October. She says acting on stage is a different experience off the back of the long-running radio career. "When they offered me the part, I was like - I can't act, I can't do this, I can't learn lines. And then I'm like - try. Try and do it, because you love the thrill of live audiences, you love entertaining people." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Multitalented wahine Anika Moa joins us for this year's final Playing Favourites.
Anika Moa is a ubiquitous presence in the New Zealand media and entertainment industry. A singer-songwriter, former radio host, and television presenter, she's been involved in the industry for over two decades. Moa began working as a radio host for NZME in August of 2019, starting at the Hits and later moving over to Flava's Breakfast show which she hosted alongside Stacey Morrison and Mike Puru, before leaving in late 2022. She told Newstalk ZB's Francesca Rudkin that while she does miss the industry, leaving has made a difference to her health. “I was so relieved,” Moa revealed. “I've had nearly a year off, apart from filming TV shows, which is pretty easy, and I feel so much better.” Being so involved in the industry and trying to raise her children at the same time was taking its toll on her. “I feel happier as well,” she told Rudkin. “I'm not juggling fifteen balls in the air and I'm just focusing on being a mum.” Moa revealed that people were actually surprised she lasted as long as she did on radio, as she's been known to flutter from project to project as a result of her ADHD. “I get bored really easily,” she said frankly. “There's pros and cons to having ADHD.” Having a neurodiversity like ADHD is something of a battle between your brain constantly seeking new and interesting experiences and the limitations of your mental and physical wellbeing. “On the one hand I want to rest, but on the other, I just want to meet people.” Moa said that her ADHD diagnosis wasn't a surprise for her, and personally, there wasn't much change, but she has realised the impact her ADHD has on her relationships, both good and bad. “When you're so close to someone and you can be up and down in moods, or bored or not bored, or wanting this or wanting that, you realise how that affects the other person.” “All those kind of things are quite conflicting.” ADHD is not the only diagnosis Moa has received in the past few years, as she learned in 2022 that her Type 2 diabetes had become Type 1. “It's been the best thing that's ever happened to me because it's really kicked my ass, but it's been the worst thing that's happened to me. But it's happened.” On top of raising her children, Moa has been taking on a few other projects as well. A big one has been the filming another season of her light-hearted interview show Anika Moa Unleashed, featuring iconic kiwis such as Sir Ashley Bloomfield and Angus Ta. “I love interviewing people,” Moa told Rudkin. “And it's not me interviewing them, it's my other person, it's one of my many people.” Each interview is packed full of activities, painting, rugby training, Moa getting to the core of each notable kiwi. Season three of Anika Moa Unleashed is out on TVNZ+ now. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kia ora. Petra Bagust here, and I have been thinking a bit about what makes up the ‘grey areas' of our lives, because I think that's a huge part of why this podcast works. To me, a ‘grey area' is a tricky space. A delicate space. A space that can bring, maybe discomfort or discouragement, or cause isolation. Maybe a 'grey area' is something that has been talked about using ‘you should' or ‘you ought' - you know, obligation language. Or it's an area that has simply not been talked about at all. And the thing is, so much of our life takes place in those ‘grey areas'... Stuff isn't clearcut and straightforward. Life is messy and fragmented and there's something kind of magical that happens when those long-held unhelpful norms and narratives are re-examined in the light of a spacious, gracious vulnerability. When we get to hear our stories - when we have the courage to say ‘this is me'... it may not be polished and presentable and perfect, but it's what I've got. And it's enough. So… with all that said, I am very happy to announce that we're about to kick off Season 4, and as always I'm joined by some wonderful human beings. This season includes Anika Moa, Dame Susan Devoy, Charlotte Cook, Kiri Nathan, Stacey Morrison, Irene van Dyk. We even chat with a specialist about skin irritations that can happen 'down there' - you know where; our vulvas. Let's talk about it. We're gonna dig deep into menopause, diabetes, heartbreak, friendship, cultural changes, body hair, and stacks of other societal ‘Grey Areas'. So join me for the joy ride that is Season 4 of Grey Areas! New episodes drop weekly from September 7th on rova, or wherever you get your favourite podcasts. Honestly, we should've expected this when we put Instagram/Comedian extraordinaire, Celeste Barber, on the show with Anika (a.k.a Celeste's biggest fan). Not to spoil it, but there is talk of tatas, there is talk of pretend lesbians and Clarke Gayford gets thrown in the mix somehow. In other chaotic news, we asked if people had ever lived with their ex. Turns out it is VERY common, and all very juicy!

There’s no doubt that, for a tiny island nation at the bottom of the world, New Zealand does incredibly well on the world music stage. And a lot of our most successful artists are women - Lorde, of course, but also Benee, Kimbra, Ladyhawke, Bic Runga, Anika Moa, Gin Wigmore, Aldous Harding, Nadia Reid, Hollie Smith, Shona Laing, Jenny Morris - and Brooke Fraser In part 3 of Resonate, we'll head into the studio during the recording sessions of Flags, speak to to the personnel who helped capture the songs, and also explore what empowers so many incredible female musicians here in Aotearoa Join Brooke alongside the people that brought Flags to life: Boh Runga (Vocal Producer), Eric Robinson (Engineer), Joe Zook (Mixing) & Godfrey de Grut (Keyboard & String arrangements) - alongside Kim Boshier (Head of Sony Music New Zealand) & local artist Paige

Mike Puru grew up in Gore, he has practically no experience with speaking Te Reo Māori or knowing about his culture but is striving for that connection. We have Anika Moa, who grew up in Christchurch and has a strong connection with her culture. She's covered in Tā Moko (tattoos) and makes a huge effort to use the language in her normal vocabulary. And then we have Stacey Morrison, who grew up in Christchurch, and had no experience with the language until she reached her 20's and realised she wanted to strengthen her connection with her culture. Since then she has become a Te Reo Māori ambassador in Aotearoa and constantly acts as a guide for anyone wanting to learn about and experience the culture.
