NEON COWGIRL "The Neon Cowgirl-towering over Broadway like the patron saint of heartbreak in downtown Nashville as she smiles coyly over her shoulder in red cowboy boots-watched me grow up. Basking in her glow, I walked wide-eyed into the Ryman Auditorium as a 16 year-old, clutching my ticket. Later that night, dreaming of standing on that stage, I drifted off to sleep in the bunk of our home on wheels at the KOA next to the Opry. When I was 18, she saw me flipping through Loretta Lynn CDs in Ernest Tubb Record Shop after performing the breakfast and lunch shows on the General Jackson showboat with my parents and brothers in our family band, The Neilsons. At 25, she watched me running all over town, meeting up with other songwriters-writing, writing, writing-before I had to fly back home to Canada again. At 30, I returned as a newlywed on my honeymoon, flying in from New Zealand where I'd moved for love, holding hands with my new husband in Hatch Show Print, introducing him to her like a family member. A decade passed without her as I built a life on the other side of the world and raised 2 babies. My heart raced as I returned to her once again, to showcase at Americanafest, playing to 12 people at 3rd and Lindsley. 5 years and many showcases later, I swear she smiled right at me as I stopped to point her out to my two children as we walked past her, through the doors of the Ryman to finally perform for the first time. NEON COWGIRL represents a lifelong dream of chasing Nashville and country music. I've loved her my whole life, even when she breaks my heart over and over again." This weeks guest = Tami Neilson - through much hard work, fierce determination and drive has begun to make all her dreams come true. She is blessed with a voice that's been described as "a fire breathing R&B belter" by Rolling Stone. Tami has now played the Ryman, sung a duet with her hero Willie Nelson. Travelled the highways and cities of the USA and Canada in an RV with her NZ family, so they could experience where she came from and the places on the planet she was singing about. Her latest adventure was opening for Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan as part of the Outlaw Music Festival. Dreams DO come true. She's done all this while dealing with health issues and her brother Jay's recovery from major surgery.
In recent years, Tami Neilson has been learning to carry both great joy and great sorrow simultaneously. The New Zealand-based, Canada-born powerhouse's new album, 'Neon Cowgirl,' is named after the towering electric figure on a sign that's overlooked Broadway in Nashville, watching over Tami's career since she was 16 years old. The songs were born from a five-month family road trip combined with a major musical tour that would allow Tami the once-in-a-lifetime chance to really give it her all with her career. It was the chance for her children to experience what her life was like at their age, when she toured the country with her family's band, led by her eccentric and wildly lovable dreamer-father, Ron Neilson. Before she got the chance to hit the road for that trip, Tami landed in the ICU with sepsis and nearly lost her life. She blessedly recovered, but found that all her priorities centered around trip/tour had changed. In our Basic Folk conversation, we talk about the songs on 'Neon Cowgirl,' her dear friendship and collaborations with Willie Nelson, and Tami's exciting performances at the Grand Ole Opry. One of the songs on 'Neon Cowgirl,' "Keep On," was inspired by a cosmic conversation she had with Wynonna Judd. Judd, to her surprise, quoted the same exact phrase – "Keep on, keep on, keep on” – that Tami's late father had written in one of her most cherished letters. We also talk a lot about her brother, Jay Neilson. For all of her career and life, Jay has been by her side as her guitarist, co-writer, and musical partner. Last July, Jay suffered a rare and debilitating brain injury that he is still recovering from. Tami and Jay have not been able to perform together since that injury. She shares what it's been like to be without Jay and how it's been for him to be so public about his condition.Tami Neilson and I first connected during the pandemic. She was a guest on the podcast after she released her 2020 album, 'Chickaboom!' Since then, I have loved following her career, listening to her new music, and experiencing her highs and lows. She's one of my favorite guests and I'm thrilled to welcome Tami back to talk about her wonderful new record.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? In 2024, I had the idea to produce podcasts based on interviews from MerleFest, with the theme being a focus on both first-time performers and veterans. Combining two artists who made their debuts resulted in the episode “Rural Roots That Run Deep With Nick Shoulders and Adeem The Artist”, we followed that with two of the festival's mainstays in the episode “Jim Lauderdale, Donna the Buffalo and the Many Collaborations Of MerleFest”. It was great fun to compare and contrast artist experiences at the venerated event between newcomers and returning veterans, as well as dive into their stories and music along the way. This year, I picked up on the approach once again, interviewing bluegrass heroes Woody Platt and Buddy Melton in the episode that immediately precedes this one, titled “A New Team For Two Heavy Hitters Of Bluegrass: Woody Platt and Buddy Melton”. Now, we celebrate another MerleFest newcomer, Tami Neilson. Although she just made her first stop at the festival, she is no novice in the roots music scene, having grown up in a family band and having made records since 2008; I was all smiles when I saw her on the MerleFest lineup for 2025. Fun fact: when I sent in the request to feature Tami on this podcast, her publicist replied, “So just to be clear here — Tami is for Southern Songs & Stories? She is originally Canadian and lives in New Zealand so just checking!” I chuckled and replied, “Yes, that's correct. I break my own rules every so often. I've featured Ruen Brothers, Colin Hay and others over the years. New Zealand is south too right? ;-)”I spoke with Tami Neilson late at night, after her rousing Dance Tent performance, where she talked about her love of wide ranging musical journeys, her own journey to her adopted country of New Zealand, growing up in a family band and now bringing her sons on stage from time to time, playing the Grand Ole Opry and making music with greats like Willie Nelson, and a whole lot more. Tami Neilson playing her first of two sets at MerleFest on April 25, 2025. You can find us on Apple here, Spotify here and YouTube here — hundreds more episodes await, filled with artists you may know by name, or musicians and bands that are ready to become your next favorites. This series is a part of the lineup of both public radio WNCW and Osiris Media, with all of the Osiris shows available here. You can also hear new episodes on Bluegrass Planet Radio here. WNCW intern Elena Dickson deserves a big thanks for jumping in on production work for this episode in her very first week! Thanks as well to Jaclyn Anthony for producing the radio adaptations of this series on WNCW, where we worked with Joshua Meng, who wrote and performed our theme songs. One of the most significant country music figures to emerge from New Zealand, Tami Neilson continues to grow on the world stage. Later this year she'll be touring around the US with Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan, as well as a string of European dates – but unlike some other stars, she's not leaving New Zealand out. Neilson is returning to our stages this October for her ‘Neon Cowgirl' tour – performing five shows across the country. She'll be performing songs from her new album of the same name, which releases in July. Although it's common for artists to labour over their work, often taking years to complete and release albums, Neilson told Mike Hosking that comparatively, she works quite quickly. “From the time I'm kind of laying down the music to when it comes out, it's usually a year,” she said. “I usually write my albums and then track them within a week, so most of my albums are live off the floor.” The recordings listeners hear are full takes performed live by Neilson and her band, which she says adds a realness to the songs. “I think in this age of, you know, impending AI, the more we can lean into our humanity, you hope that comes through in the music and connects with other human hearts.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Classic female country artists like Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, and Faith Hill, along with modern-day musicians like Kasey Musgraves, Carrie Underwood, and Shania Twain are pioneers of the genre. Despite their influence and hand in elevating country music to the heights it's reached in the modern era, only 10% of country music airplay and awards are granted to women. This is one of the astonishing facts in Tami Neilson's latest show ‘The F Word', which combines music with the research of musicology professor Dr Jada Watson. The two first met on Twitter, both very vocal about challenging inequality in the country music industry. “I followed her because she wrote, you know, these incredible articles," Neilson told Francesca Rudkin. “What I loved about her work was that for an artist, she was kind of giving us the tools to feel validated I guess, you know, vindicated.” Neilson says she wanted to tell the story of women in country music through song, backing it with the black and white statistics of Watson's research. Despite country being one of the largest genres of music in the United States, women are disproportionally represented, an issue Watson says has historic roots. “We have to remember where country came from and the time in which it was developed, and this was 1920's United States, racially segregated country.” “Most cultural institutions were racially segregated and then sort of built into that framework was also different forms of discrimination or oppression,” she said. One of the stories they tell in ‘The F Word' is that of the Carter Family – one of the founding families of the country music genre. Watson says that in the recording sessions including people like Jimmie Rodgers, the Carters said that a woman in the lead would never sell. “We think of them as the founding family of country music,” Watson told Rudkin. “And so that idea of women not selling, or not being possible to sell has really been baked into the fabric of the institution that is country music.” The ‘F Word' will be performed on Saturday, March 8th at Auckland Town Hall. Tickets are available at aaf.co.nz/ LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One of New Zealand's country music faves is making her return to New Zealand. Tami Neilson, a multi-award winner and friend of the great Willie Nelson, has announced a new mini tour of the country: Neilson Sings Nelson. She'll be performing all of her favourites from the Willie Nelson songbook, with the endorsement of Nelson himself: “Tami's the real deal and does my songs a great honour.” The tour coincides with the release of her new album of the same title, recorded at Nelson's Pedernales Studio in Texas, featuring her brothers Jay and Todd on the backing vocals, guitar, bass, and drums. Neilson told Mike Hosking that meeting and performing with Nelson is still something of a ‘pinch me' moment. “I still check my phone every once in a while to see if it still exists in the world, and kind of expect to wake I from this dream that I did a duet with him.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

May is New Zealand Music Month, the theme for this year ‘Amplifying Aotearoa', aiming to shine a light on those who are the heartbeat of the nation's music scene. One of the artists being highlighted is Tami Neilson, a country and soul singer-songwriter. She's fresh off a plane from Nashville where she paid tribute to Patsy Cline on the sacred stage of the Rhyman, rewarded with a standing ovation from the audience. Neilson told Kerre Woodham that it was so overwhelming and unexpected. “I still haven't really processed it.” Despite the accolades, making a living as a musician is no easy feat, most artists waiting by the phone until they can snatch up a gig. “This business is, is not for the faint of heart.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's show looks back at the year 2022 with a focus on the umbrella genre known as Americana. We'll be digging deep into the releases that mattered last year, sharing some of the fresh new releases that made an impression. There are the singer/songwriters, the old hands with fresh perspectives, as well as those who have taken tradition and dressed it up fresh for the party. We'll hear tracks from some of the very best albums of the year, including a few off the beaten one. Some great sounds coming your way from Aoife O'Donovan, The Black Keys, Tami Neilson, and Hurray for the Riff Raff. Pour yourself a cup of your favorite fresh brew, put on the headphones, and find yourself some new favorites from under that big tent they call ‘Americana' on KOWS Community Radio.
Episode 227: This week dwells on origins and growth with two artists who've had very different journeys but who had to get resourceful in their own way. Amy Ray put the Indigo Girls on the map with her partner Emily Saliers in part through a relentless focus on activism and support of causes they cherished. They were given the Americana Lifetime Award for Free Speech in September. Tami Neilson grew up in a family band playing gospel and country in and around Canada, but she had to start over from square one when she moved to New Zealand to get married 20 years ago. She found multiple ways to stand out and make her own scene, driven by her outstanding voice and her provocative feminist anthems.

“Could the King of Country Music be the daughter, not the son” The 5th Tami Neilson Album is called Kingmaker. The song Kingmaker “addresses the gatekeepers and kingmakers who hold tightly to the keys of equity and minorities in the music industry and, more largely, society as a whole.” It's an amazing breakthrough album for this Canadian/New Zealand singer and songwriter. The song Beyond the Stars is about loss and grief. Tami lost her Father. As Tami wrote the song, she kept hearing a duet with her father's voice. She thought the best voice on the planet should sing her Father Ron's lyric – Willie Nelson. Willie was fully in, as he had just lost his sister. Tami moves through, blues, country, rock, and roots, with an ease that comes from years of street busking. As we talked via Zoom I was thrilled to tell her that she had the number 1 album on the CKUA Top 30. For a total treat, check out the Zoom video on our TDM - YouTube Channel. (TerydavidMulligan)
It's no longer compulsory indoors, but if you're heading to a gig, should you be masking up? Some artists and promoters are encouraging their audiences to wear face coverings to help keep them safe. That's because a Covid-19 outbreak during a tour can destroy years worth of planning and wreck musicians' livelihoods, not to mention the potentially devastating health consequences. First Up reporter Leonard Powell has been speaking to musicians, like Tami Neilson, who are asking their fans to do their bit.

We go track by track on Canadian-born New Zealand feminist trouble maker and country music superstar, Tami Neilson's 5th album, Kingmaker. Recorded at Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios, the songs of Kingmaker expose industry systems, exploding patriarchal structures of the industry, society, and family. It's definitely not new territory for Tami, her previous two albums called attention to misogyny and patriarchal structures. Tami digs into these themes with sophistication, grace, emotion and humor. The way she brings these important messages to life hits you hard, but you can also dance to it.This is Tami's second appearance on the podcast (she was first on episode 79). Definitely check out our first conversation as we talk about her life in her family band, move to New Zealand and her relationship to fashion and appearance. She also talked about experiencing the death of her father, the musician Ron Neilson. He appears on Kingmaker in several forms. For instance, on the song “Beyond the Stars,” written with Delaney Davidson, she sings about the loss of her father and the longing to be with him again, with the legendary Willie Nelson singing the part of Tami's dad. Tami's one in a million! Enjoy this conversation and her brilliant new album, Kingmaker.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
