It's no exaggeration to say that sport changed Bethany Tucker's life for good. Born with cerebral palsy, she never really enjoyed PE at school – and only took it up again later in life when her chiropractor recommended it to help with her CP. That suggestion ended up changing everything for Bethany – and the T37 para-athlete has now competed far and wide. She's been to Diamond League events, the City Games in Manchester, the Anniversary Games in London – and after opening up about her own sexuality, she's also helping other athletes to feel more comfortable in sport as part of the Athletics Pride Network. So, this is a fascinating chat with a great guest about all sorts of things. From finding a sport that accepts you to finding yourself as a person, there's plenty in it that we think you're going to love - and we're grateful Bethany made the time to join us. James Ellington competed in London and Rio. But the sprinter's career came to a shuddering halt in 2017 when he was involved in a motor bike accident whilst on a training camp in Tenerife. He talks from his base in Dubai about the mindset and determination he has shown to rebuild a career after doctors questioned whether he'd walk again. He returned to the track in 2019 at the Anniversary Games in London. And even then he had to deal with an allergic reaction to a sting just before the event and a slip at home. In this special edition, Sonja McLaughlan lets you into as many Usain Bolt secrets as she can in 33 minutes, from her decade interviewing the fastest man on earth. Sonja first encountered the Jamaican after the 100m first round in Beijing, 2008. And so began a long, respectfully playful relationship between the pair, with Sonja gaining a trackside reputation as the one interview Bolt would always do. In association with Aldi UK, official supermarket partner of Team GB, Marcus Buckland is alongside Jonathan Overend to prod for stories. Jonathan reveals Bolt's comment on discovering Sonja was absent from the 2013 Anniversary Games. Marcus and Sonja go back 30 years so there's leg-pulling, gentle-jabbing, tales from Atlanta '96, their first together, plus a bizarre broken nose for an Olympic legend. Who?! How?!

Alasdair Hooper and Will Moulton are joined by British 400m runner Amy Allcock on episode 33 of SportSpiel. **Feature Interview** On our feature interview section (3:51) Alasdair speaks to British runner Amy Allcock after a breakthrough year in 2018. The 25-year-old - by her own admission - was relatively late on the scene in terms of committing to her sport at university but with a personal best at the Anniversary Games this summer everything is finally falling into place. In her chat on the podcast she discusses the crucial moments and battles on her pathway to where she is now - one of the 114 British athletes on the World Class Programme. From trying to get over a fear of running with lactic, to accepting that she will be sick after races, a lot of what Amy has had to work on is on the mental side. But alongside her coach, and with some helpful words from her dad regarding commitment to her sport, the lap times have steadily become faster and faster. **Part Two** Alasdair and Will present the review of 2018 (36:13) in the final show before the new year. In their look back over the past 12 months they pick their main contenders in the following categories: * Funniest moment * Unsung moment * Most inspirational moment * Controversial moment * Worst moment * Best moment * Favourite SportSpiel moment * Athlete to watch in 2019 **Messages** Follow us on Twitter - https://twitter.com/SportSpielPod?lang=en Like us on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/SportSpielPod/ Follow us on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/sportspielpod/ Get in touch: sportspielpod@gmail.com Visit our website: sportspielonline.com **Credits** Image credit: Melissa Gresswell / Instagram: @lissgphotography Music: Otis McDonald

For the first time in thirty episodes, all three of us were at the same meet, with nothing to do but soak up the atmosphere, interview some international stars, and discuss the world of athletics. And, if we do say so ourselves, we've delivered. Morgan Lake, KJT, Laura Muir, Sifan Hassan, Guy Learmonth, Sandra Perkovic, Maria Lasitskene (feat. interpreter), Adam Gemili, and - of course - the man who has catapulted himself into the hearts of British athletics fans, and onto more podiums than you could shake an airline-mislaid bag of pole vault sticks at: Greg Rutherford. We also look back at the Monaco Diamond League, reminisce about some of Millicent Fawcett's finest mile races, and ponder the impending European selections. There have been some lovely reviews recently: thank you ever so much. Prizes to follow in our next, Euro preview, pod. Please keep listening, rating, and tweeting (@BackstraightB & @Claire_GThomas). Enjoy!

Bolt's best friend Nugent Walker or NJ, as he’s known has been Usain Bolt’s best friend since primary school and manager since 2010. Despite being a ‘monster on the track’, NJ says Bolt is a bit of a dominos geek off it. What stands out from the interview is NJ is extremely proud watching his friend dominate the track. We could hear Usain in the background whilst we were talking to Nugent. He wasn’t able to talk; I think he has a race this week. Bolt changed my life Robyn Williams caught a pair of Bolt’s running spikes at the 2016 Anniversary Games. She says having the spikes inspired her to continue her athletics training. George Hoy was a games changer at the 2012 Olympics and managed to walk away with Bolt’s hat, after carrying his kit in the 200 metre heats. The Londoner says the conversation helped him apply and complete his university studies and gain confidence. Finally, a video of Dionne Hansey celebrating Bolt’s victory in the 200 metres went viral around the world. She says Bolt has been an important person in her life and the history of Jamaica. Athletics nationality problem Jak Ali Harvey is a Jamaican born athlete, who runs for Turkey. He says he changed nationalities because he received better support from Turkish athletics. Many African and Caribbean runners have decided to run for Middle Eastern countries in recent years. Professor Paul Michael Brannagan says athletes changing nationalities to represent Middle Eastern countries are helping improve the image of Middle Eastern governments. Record bid devastation Last week, we interviewed Sean Conway and discovered there was a three way battle for the world record for crossing Europe on a bicycle. Iain Findley was one of those cyclists, who was aiming to break the record. But the cycling coach had to abort his record attempt due to injury. Iain says the decision to quit has affected him mentally but believes Sean, who inspired him to take on the challenge, can break the record.
